SPECIAL | Suffering in silence with high-functioning depression

Many people have some experience with depression. Often the condition goes away, but what if it doesn't? What if it's something you just learn to live with? With a term like ‘high-functioning’ attached to it, it may, by its very nature, be difficult to diagnose. So what is high-functioning depression and what can be done for the people who are suffering with it? Vale Wright, the senior director of Health Care Innovation at the American Psychological Association, joins The Excerpt to help answer these questions.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

SPECIAL | Left behind: a volunteer army rescues the animals of Ukraine

It has now been over two years since Russia invaded Ukraine. As the people of Ukraine fled their homes, many were forced to leave their belongings behind and, for some, that included beloved pets. At animal shelters, volunteers who’d dedicated their lives to saving animals had to choose between abandoning those animals in what became active war zones or staying behind to face bombs and Russian soldiers. Luckily for the animals, as one rescuer put it, fear was often overcome by compassion. Popular Ukranian YouTuber and wartime storyteller Anton Ptushkin's new documentary "Saving the Animals of Ukraine," premieres Wednesday, May 15th, on PBS Nature. He joins The Excerpt to discuss humanity’s responsibility to animals during wartime.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What’s driving the anti-vax movement?

Whether someone has or hasn’t been vaccinated for COVID-19, the measles, or even for polio, has become a controversial topic. That's not new. Resistance to vaccines is well over a century old. What is new, and what’s grabbing headlines right now, are the outbreaks of measles and other vaccine-preventable illnesses that are spreading globally. The CDC recently reported that nearly a third of all U.S. measles cases since 2020 happened in the past three months. Hesitancy around vaccines has even spilled over to pet owners, with some not vaccinating their animals against rabies. Both medical professionals and governments agree that vaccines are good for us, so why do some people remain unconvinced? Ina Pinkney, a passionate speaker who travels around the country advocating for vaccines, joins The Excerpt to discuss the anti-vax movement.CORRECTION: This episode has been updated to remove an incorrect reference to the HPV vaccine.Episode Transcript available hereAlso available at art19.com/shows/5-ThingsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

SPECIAL | Will the pro-Palestinian college protests lead to lasting change?

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations that began at Columbia University have ignited a wave of similar protests at colleges and universities across the country. Weeks into it, those protests seem to be only intensifying. Thousands have now been arrested. The students’ demands vary by campus, but the majority are asking for an end to the Israel-Hamas war and divestment from companies that are financially benefitting from the conflict. In decades past, student activism regarding the Vietnam War, civil rights and South Africa’s apartheid successfully sparked broad social and political change. As the Israel-Hamas war unfolds, Muslim Americans struggle for understanding

It's now been nearly seven months since Hamas attacked Israel, killing nearly 1200 Israelis and taking over 200 hostage. Since then, the Israeli Defense Forces, or IDF, have executed a devastating bombing campaign and sent in ground forces to "eradicate" Hamas. The death toll in the Palestinian enclave is staggering, with more than 34,000 killed, according to the Gaza health ministry. The majority of those killed are women and children. The health ministry says the sheer scale of the tragedy unfolding in Gaza is unprecedented. The UN estimates that more than 70% of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been displaced. Food and medical supplies aren't nearly enough to meet the needs. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Islamophobia and anti-Muslim incidents have surged. Nihad Awad, co-founder and national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights and advocacy nonprofit joins The Excerpt to share his thoughts. Antisemitism is rampant. Campus protests aren't helping things.

It’s now been over six months since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th, when more than 1100 Israelis were killed and over 200 taken hostage. These were mostly civilians. While the Israel-Hamas War has been ongoing since that day, the repercussions of that attack have also been keenly felt here in America in the form of a surge in antisemitism. On college campuses, and in communities across the country, Jews have felt targeted, threatened, and frightened. Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League or ADL, a Jewish civil rights organization, joins The Excerpt to talk about the issues. SPECIAL | Can a new dream city solve California’s affordable housing problem?

For the past five years, a small group of Silicon Valley investors has spent nearly a billion dollars quietly buying up over 50,000 acres of farmland in northern California. The goal? To create an ambitious new California dream city, something that hasn’t been done in America for over a century. The California Forever project aims to create a livable, workable, walkable city that puts working families at the heart of its design, creating new housing for up to 400,000 people. If a person is convicted of a crime, they may be sentenced to prison. Upon release, technically, they're free again. The catch is that now they have a criminal record that will likely follow them everywhere they go. So, when does the sentence end? Earth Day 2024: Some scientists are calling for "urgent optimism"

Earth Day falls on April 22nd this year. And as with every Earth Day, it’s a chance to slow down and take stock of where we are with climate change and the state of the planet. While the drumbeat of alarming climate change news continues unabated - it's been the hottest year, we have the warmest oceans, and most severe weather on record - some scientists argue that humanity is actually on the cusp of broad, positive change. Even though the years ahead may be rough, as climate warms beyond what had been hoped for, these scientists are feeling “urgent optimism” for what could be the first generation to achieve a sustainable world. In the age of Ozempic, body image has morphed. How do we learn to love our bodies?

The mass media has pushed skinny on us for decades. And while doctors encourage healthy eating and lower body mass indexes, the body positivity movement supports the inclusion of all shapes and sizes, emphasizing loving the skin you’re in. But there are even more fractures in this conversation when it comes to the newest weight loss fad and object of desire: the drug Ozempic and its competitors like Wegovy and Mounjaro. There is also a dark side to this pursuit of perfection; namely, eating disorders and other health issues, both physical and emotional. The Israel-Hamas War hits a grim six month milestone

After six months of intense human suffering, both sides of the Israel and Gaza conflict have experienced a collective trauma that will affect generations for years to come. It all started with a Hamas attack on Israel, which killed about 1,200 people along with the taking of 240 hostages. It was the single deadliest assault against Jews since the Holocaust. The Israeli response has been brutal, killing over 30,000 Gazans, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, mostly innocent women and children. The situation in the Gaza Strip is now dire, with millions not having enough food, housing, or medical care to meet the needs of a desperate population. Despite this, cease-fire negotiations continue to falter, and both sides remain far apart. After traveling to The Holy Land, USA TODAY World Affairs Correspondent Kim Hjelmgaard provides a special report for The Excerpt on the human stories that define this tragic conflict.Episode Transcript available hereAlso available at art19.com/shows/5-ThingsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

SPECIAL | The trouble at Boeing

It’s the stuff of nightmares. Shortly after takeoff in early January, a panel on an Alaska Airlines plane blew off midair. Luckily, the two seats next to that panel were empty. Not so luckily for Boeing, they are now under the microscope by regulators, while workers are coming forward, anonymously and otherwise, saying that the firm had recently been chipping away at longstanding safety practices to speed up the production process with its 737 Max. The blowback from investors, regulators and the public has been swift and isn’t even close to being over. In its pursuit of an edge over Airbus, did Boeing put profits over lives? One of the many ways the COVID pandemic upended education was with regards to college admissions. Widespread lockdowns meant that in-person tests like the SAT and ACT were no longer offered. But recently, there’s been a trend to reverse that. Which students are being hurt by this decision and which ones are getting a leg up? Our guest, John Friedman, Professor of Economics at Brown University and Co-Director of Opportunity Insights at Harvard University, studies the impact of standardized testing on social capital and economic mobility.Episode Transcript available hereAlso available at art19.com/shows/5-ThingsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
