Afternoon Pancakes Episode 3 Part 1
Happy Sunday, Colts fans! This is a special episode of Afternoon Pancakes. I have a football story to tell and since my wife and I already have a couple of podcasts under our belt, I figure she could sit down with me and let me tell my story. This may not interest you. This is my story about my coaching experience, but more important a story about real people that live and work in your communities all over Indiana. I'll also talk about the Colts, but until there's film/photo to yap about, everything else is blind prognostication, something I try to stay away from (unless it's during the season). You can follow us on Twitter. Stampede Blue @StampedeBlue, follow this podcast @PodPancake and you can follow Taylor @taymicmal and myself @likelyalien. Please give this podcast a 5 star rating to help new people find us! Peace and love! Please get vaccinated.

Afternoon Pancakes Episode 1
The 2021-22 NFL league year started just about two weeks ago, Jared and Stephen decided to wait until some of the smoke had cleared to sit down and record another episode (gotta let it breathe). We figure we will reset the season when the league year starts and only come to you with news to talk about instead of spending hours of our time prognosticating about things we largely know little to nothing about. Please follow the podcast here. Follow Jared here and Stephen here. Most importantly, please like, share and give us the highest review score possible if not because of our awesome podcast now in its third season, because it helps people find our show and may open doors for us in sports media! We thank you and hope you and your family are well. Please stay safe, wear masks, get vaccinated and social distance so we can see one another again someday. If you're interested in donating to my niece Zianna's GoFundMe, you can do that here. Thank you.

Colts Cast: Anthony Castonzo retires; Colts' WC loss reaction; Evaluating Colts' QB room for 2021
The Indianapolis Colts were able to draw Anthony Castonzo back for another year in 2020, but the 10-year veteran and former first round pick, has decided to hang it up after finishing the season on IR.
Castonzo has been one of the most durable LTs in the league throughout his career, and one of the most consistent as well. The Colts are certainly going to miss him, and this amps up the need to do something long-term at the position this offseason.
Additionally, we discuss the Colts’ Wild Card loss to the Buffalo Bills, and how the perception of Frank Reich’s play-calling is overblown. The Colts’ coach has been aggressive throughout his short tenure at the helm, but I’ll argue that his fourth-down call is exactly what the Colts, and we as fans, should have hoped he’d do in that very situation.
We also cut to the chase on the Colts’ quarterback situation for the near, and long-term future at the position. What to do with Philip Rivers; Should Brissett be back?; What should our hopes be for Jacob Eason this offseason and in the very near future?

Colts Cast: Jonathan Taylor carries Colts past Jaguars, into the playoffs in 28-14 victory
The Indianapolis Colts entered Week 17 needing a win, and some help to earn a playoff berth. The Buffalo Bills helped the Colts out by beating down the Miami Dolphins, the Houston Texans nearly allowed the Colts to steal the division, and now the Colts will face off with the Bills in the Wild Card round as the 7 seed.
The game started much like we have seen all year, with an opening drive score, and an offense that looked dominant early. The Colts' defense was great early as well. Jonathan Taylor was the bell cow the Colts have needed in the backfield early and often in this one carrying the ball 30 times for 253 rushing yards, but the Colts allowed the Jaguars to climb back into the game (20-14) after the Colts built a 20-0 lead.
It looked eerily familiar to the collapse from a week ago against the Steelers, but the Jags were just bad enough to fail in this one. Much like he started the game, with over 70 rushing yards on the initial possession, Taylor ended the game with a 45-yard touchdown to push the Colts to a 28-14 final and a road to the playoffs.
Frank Reich, and Matt Eberflus have some improvements they need to make as their second-half coaching has been lacking in a major way and have made the Colts one of the worst third quarter teams in the league.

Colts Cast: Colts sweep Texans, inch closer to clinching playoff berth
The Indianapolis Colts again found a way to win against the Houston Texans in Week 15, as they sweep the season meetings with a 27-20 victory.
Much like their win against the Texans in Week 13, the game was decided by one score, with the Texans threatening to score as regulation neared an end. Differently, from the bad snap that decided the game in Week 13, the Colts' defensive playmaking forced the ball to the turf leading to a recovery by Bobby Okereke in the end zone.
Darius Leonard showed why he's the emotional leader on this defense, DeForest Buckner proved that despite being banged up earlier in the week, that he could rack up more than just QB hits, earning 3 sacks in the winning effort. Offensively, the Colts proved that they could run the ball with very good outputs from Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines, and Philip Rivers once again was efficient, and maintained ball control as the offense scored on all three of their second-half possessions.
Frank Reich has the Colts moving in the right direction with the offense humming, and Matt Eberflus has been very good mixing up pressures, and coverages as the Colts continue to be one of the NFL's top defensive units as the season reaches critical mass. Divisional games are never easy, and the Colts nearly never blow the Texans out, but they're winning games that they should and at this point in the season that's all that really matters.
The Colts will head into Week 15 with a largely healthy roster, and the Pittsburgh Steelers having lost their last three matchups after starting 11-0 on the season.

Colts Cast: Colts solidify themselves as true contenders in Week 14 rout of Raiders
The Indianapolis Colts came into their Week 14 meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders needing to prove that they could not only hang with legitimate playoff contenders, but that they were capable of throwing a knockout blow to a contender. The Colts answered that question in resounding fashion with a 44-27 blowout over the Raiders in Las Vegas.
Philip Rivers was efficient, Jonathan Taylor led the Colts' running game with 150 yards, T.Y. Hilton followed up his coming out party in Week 13 with two more touchdowns in Week 14, and Kenny Moore spearheaded the Colts' defense with a forced fumble and an insane interception.
This wasn't just a blowout win for the Colts, it was a complete game on all phases when the team needed to show it could be efficient, and consistent throughout four quarters. The Colts scored in all four quarters, sustained four drives (of their nine possessions) of at least 10 plays, were 8-11 on third downs offensively, and put up 13 points on the three turnovers that they forced.
The Colts are set to finish the season with the Houston Texans in Week 15, the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 16, and finish the season hoping to avenge a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17. The Colts are in the thick of the AFC playoff picture with a host of other teams including a real shot at taking the AFC South if they can somehow go up a game on the Tennessee Titans over the final three weeks of the season.
Every game becomes as important as the last with the bubble teams knocking on the Wild Card door as well, and the Colts cannot afford to take any steps back with such a slim margin for error.

Then they talk Darren Waller, and Shepherd digs in to explain how they may use Waller to attack weaknesses inherent in the Colts' defense. Next they talk about the Raiders defense, and discuss what kind of an offensive performance we should expect from the Colts, given that all avenues may be reasonably successful against a struggling Raiders defense. Finally, the guys give their bold predictions and make their game picks for the week.

Colts Cast: Colts squeak by in Week 13, need more consistency to solidify playoff berth
The Indianapolis Colts were able to pull one out in Week 13 against the Houston Texans, largely due to the Texans inability to secure a snap in scoring range, rather than the Colts ability to close out the game. The Colts led at halftime 24-20, and managed to only score via a safety throughout the remainder of the game.
That sort of lopsided play between halves, simply will not cut it in the final stretch of the season where the team has the Las Vegas Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers among their final four games of the year.
"A tale of two halves" appears to be the Colts' mantra of late, while inconsistency with playcalling, execution, as well as committing unforced penalties seem to be the team's new jam. If the Colts are going to stamp their playoff berth, they must improve in all of these areas.
Philip Rivers posted some impressive numbers, DeForest Buckner and Kenny Moore proved how much they mean to this defense, and Jonathan Taylor looked as good as he has all season with improved vision and decisiveness with the ball in his hands.
Are the Colts built to close out the season with potentially two playoff teams within their final four games of the year looming? Can the Colts pin down the Texans and Jaguars in their second meetings with the two AFC South foes? And maybe most importantly, can the Colts prove to be more consistent on both sides of the ball in order to secure a playoff berth?
The Colts will have to do it with their third string tackle with Le'Raven Clark being lost for the season and Anthony Castonzo's expected return uncertain? Can T.Y. Hilton continue what he has started over the past couple weeks and finish the season stacking quality game on top of quality game?

Colts Cast: Colts need big post-Thanksgiving run to earn playoff berth
The Indianapolis Colts are now 1-2 in the AFC South, as they stand at 7-4 overall after their lopsided loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 12.
This doesn't sit well as the Titans own the tie-breaker and are up a game in the standings. The Colts have three more divisional games, starting with Week 13 against the Houston Texans, and two big games against tough AFC opponents (Raiders, Steelers) to finish out their season.
With several other teams heavy in the Wild Card hunt, the Colts really need to do some damage in order to make a push to steal back the division.
DeForest Buckner, Denico Autry, and Bobby Okereke returning to the lineup would certainly help in that regard, but the Colts have another issue on the other side of the ball to worry about as well.
Anthony Castonzo isn't just an okay left tackle, however, nothing the Colts have to replace him while he's out is better than just okay. Additionally, on defense, the team is going to have to address the subpar play from Rock Ya-Sin.
The CB has simply not been effective in man coverage, and is putting the unit at a disadvantage with his play as of late. Is the answer to move Kenny Moore around, using him more on the boundary? Or, would T.J. Carrie be a better answer opposite Xavier Rhodes going forward?
Unfortunately, there are more questions than answers with the Colts current state of affairs, and they need to find some answers if they hope to earn themselves a playoff berth.
Do the Colts need to sweep the rest of their divisional games, plus win one of their next two non-divisional games? Are the Colts even capable of winning four of their final five games? Either way, the Colts need some sort of run, because the Wild Card picture is a crowded room right now with quality AFC squads.

Colts Cast: Colts improve to 7-3 after huge Week 11 win over Packers
The Indianapolis Colts came into their Week 11 matchup with the Green Bay Packers ready to follow up a huge divisional win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 10.
The Colts were down two scores at the half, as the Packers scored on both Colts' turnovers, but the defense allowed only 3 second half points, and the Colts' offense put together four drives of 8 plays or more and were able to gain the lead, then finish off the Packers in OT.
This was truly a complete team win, from all three phases of the game.
The Colts' offense came to life especially in the second half, their defense was straight up lock-down in the final 30 minutes (plus OT) as well, AND the Colts' special teams was excellent all day as well.
Kenny Moore may just be the most important player on this Colts' defense, Michael Pittman had another big game, Philip Rivers was very good for the Colts virtually all game, the team is still getting impressive play from their defensive front-four, and Julian Blackmon is becoming a legit NFL safety as a rookie, right before our eyes.
With all of the positive comes a bit of the negative of course. The Colts' holding calls in a pivotal possession late in the game is something that simply cannot continue. Though Rock Ya-Sin came up with a huge interception in this one, his grabby style is a real liability and he's got to be better.
In the end, the Colts are still in control of the AFC South, and are set to host the Titans in Week 12 for their second meeting of the season. This one is every bit as important as the last two games for the Colts.
They gain firm control of the division with another win, and with three more divisional games, as well as matchups with the Las Vegas Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers still left on their schedule, the Colts have a shot at proving their legitimate contenders with a strong finish to the season.

Colts Cast: Colts miss opportunity to take next step, fall to Ravens 24-10
The Indianapolis Colts had their best shot to take out one of the AFC's top teams Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. Though the Colts were without T.Y. Hilton, the Ravens were missing some big pieces and an entire unit of their defense couldn't even practice all week due to contact tracing issues.
The Colts' defense was on point in the first half, but began to give up some yardage and points in the second half, as Lamar Jackson proved once again that he can't be silenced for an entire four quarters. With that said, the Colts' defense played good enough to win the game.
The real issue has become the team's offense and it's remarkable inconsistency. Philip Rivers gambled possession of the ball when the team needed to build on the momentum they'd recently been handed by the defense. Jonathan Taylor had a critical fumble returned for a touchdown, and with those two mistakes alone, put the Colts in a hole the offense simply couldn't come back from.
At the moment, the only answer for this Colts' offense is sustained possessions because they simply don't hold much of a big-play threat to opposing defenses. Zach Pascal has been reliable, and Michael Pittman has been another quality possession receiver for the Colts, however, with Hilton being forgettable so far this season, and with a potential-and-consistency struggle with Marcus Johnson, the quick-strike potential just isn't impressive for the Colts right now.
The Colts don't have much time to lick their wounds with a divisional game Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans on the horizon. Is the Colts' offense in real trouble going forward? Will the running game ever achieve what it needs to for the offense to be effective? Can Rivers carry the offense with intelligent decisions the rest of the year, or will he continue to be a net-negative when the team faces any sort of adversity? We'll see soon enough.

Colts Cast: Colts can't capitalize in second half, fall to Browns 32-23 in Week 5
The Indianapolis Colts were coming into their Week 5 matchup with the Cleveland Browns preparing to square off with one of the better rushing teams, and one of the more surprising NFL offenses to this point in the season.
The Colts defense came to play once again, but Philip Rivers was mistake prone, the lack of offensive firepower was evident, and a few mental mistakes ended up being the team's undoing.
Some of the Colts' issues are being smoothed out, while a couple that are real game-changers are not being corrected. This will present the biggest obstacle for the Colts and their thoughts of a post-season run if they can't get them taken care of.
Injuries are beginning to mount up for the Colts, and some of them have been minimal with the breakout of guys like Julian Blackmon, and Xavier Rhodes. But, when arguably the team's best player (Darius Leonard), and the best offensive lineman (Anthony Castonzo) are out of the lineup, it's hard to come back from.
Can the Colts replace the losses of Paris Campbell and Marlon Mack as the season progresses? And how vital will rookie WR Michael Pittman be when he returns? There's still a lot of good with the Colts squad, but there are some looming questions as well that need to be answered quickly.

Colts Cast: Colts win third straight on shoulders of their defense in Week 4 victory over Bears
The Indianapolis Colts (3-1) have now won their third straight game since coming up short in their Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Sunday, the Colts' defense continued their stingy play, stuffing the Chicago Bears' running game, and holding the Bears' offense to 4 of 14 on third down attempts. The Colts offense wasn't mistake free, however, they did keep from giving the ball away, and were able to put enough on the scoreboard to keep control of the game.
On the flipside, the Colts struggled to run the ball, they weren't good in the red zone (1-4), there were a couple very near misses (near interceptions), and Philip Rivers wasn't accurate on some pretty simple throws by the NFL's standards.
The Colts continue to get quality defensive performances from DeForest Buckner, Justin Houston, Julian Blackmon, and maybe more surprisingly, from Xavier Rhodes. Additionally, Mo Alie-Cox has become a go-to option for Rivers, and is in need of another playmaker as the Colts' offense has produced only 7 touchdowns in four games, and Alie-Cox has two of them.
While that within itself isn't an issue, until you realize that T.Y. Hilton has zero. Or the fact that Trey Burton got as many targets in Week 4 as Jack Doyle has all season (5). The Colts are still winning, but they're definitely missing the likes of Marlon Mack, Michael Pittman, and the big play ability from Paris Campbell.
The Colts have so much going for them right now, and we'll swoon over that on today's show, but we're also going to get into where the Colts are struggling which desperately needs to be improved if the Colts are to be considered legit contenders going forward.

Colts Cast: Colts stack another lopsided victory in Week 3 drubbing of Jets
The Indianapolis Colts were coming off of a handy defeat of the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2 and were hoping to take care of business in Week 3 against against a depleted, and sloppy New York Jets squad. They did exactly that by handing out a 36-7 smashing of the Jets, with a big defensive effort, efficient offensive play, and a solid special teams outing.
Mo Alie-Cox again showed that he was capable of continuing his big-play ability, Xavier Rhodes had his most productive game in a couple years (2 Interceptions), and Philip Rivers maintained his control over the offense. The Colts are seeing instant returns in the acquisition of DeForest Buckner, the team's secondary is thriving in spite of losing a couple key pieces in the past couple weeks, and Frank Reich and Matt Eberflus have been calling some very good games on their respective sides of the ball.
The Colts held the Jets to 260 yards of total offense, and combated that with a very controlled game script of their own that could march down the field with sustained drives, but also is producing some big chunk plays as well.
The Colts still have a couple areas in which they need to tighten up before they can be exposed by better teams on their schedule. The Colts just happen to be mitigating any of their marginal areas of production with big plays. Largely the team is hitting on all cylinders, combining very good performances in all three phases of the game.
This team is getting exciting to watch, and it can be pondered that they have some real potential this season, yet the team's schedule gets much more difficult after the bye, and will need to continue to grow if they hope to get to a double-digit win total for the year and have real playoff aspirations. Beating up on teams they should absolutely beat up on, though, is a necessary part of the process of getting better and is a lot of fun to watch in the meantime.

Colts Cast: Colts bounce back in Week 2, take out Vikings 28-11
The Indianapolis Colts needed a big win, to play well and efficiently against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2. Well, in their home opener, the Colts bounced back after a disappointing Week 1 loss, with a dominating victory against the Vikings 28-11.
By all accounts, the Colts were good on both sides of the ball. They held the Vikings under 180 total yards of offense, forcing 3 turnovers, and put up over 350 yards of total offense themselves nearly doubling the Vikings up in time of possession.
Rookie running back Jonathan Taylor ran for his first NFL touchdown while racking up 101 rushing yards in his first start, and Mo Allie-Cox picked up the slack of a very thin tight end group by catching 5 balls for 111 yards. Philip Rivers was good Philip this week as well and statistically could have been even better without a perfect toss for touchdown that was dropped instead of putting 6 points on the board.
T.J. Carrie played well in Rock Ya-Sin's absence, and Julian Blackmon made his presence known as well defensively. Additionally, DeForest Buckner was noticeably more productive this week, and Tyquan Lewis showed off what the Colts saw in him when they moved up to draft him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
The Colts now prepare to host the New York Jets in Week 3, but this win was a must for the team to gain some momentum heading into the thick of their schedule.

Colts Cast: Colts fail to capitalize on miscues in Week 1 loss to Jaguars
The Indianapolis Colts came into the 2020 season with a load of expectations. Philip Rivers is now under center, the backfield is dynamic, and A first-round pick was used to acquire a dominant force on the defensive line -- of course there are expectations.
Sunday afternoon, however, it was the Jacksonville Jaguars' day as miscues, a lack of efficiency on third down, failures in capitalizing on Jags mistakes, and some poor decision making became the undoing of the heavily favored Colts.
Marlon Mack, who looked good early in this game, ended up leaving in the second quarter with an achilles injury. What was supposed to be a deep backfield just got a lot thinner. Jonathan Taylor was drafted to give the Colts offense a heavy hitter as a spell back, but now it looks like he'll be getting a heavy workload in Mack's impending absence from the lineup.
Paris Campbell became one of Rivers' favorite targets in this one, and T.Y. Hilton took the blame for his two drops late in the game after just working the Jags' defensive backs early on in the game. Additionally, the Colts' defense was very ordinary in Week 1, and probably worse than that, but there are a ton of pieces for Matt Eberflus to work with, and results need to change quickly.
Today, Matt discusses some of his notes from the first outing of the year, and will go through the positives and negatives of critical possessions and scoring drives. In the end the Colts took the L, 27-20 with their eyes now set on hosting the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2.

Colts Cast: Up or Down? Post draft positional look at the Colts defense
The Indianapolis Colts have new expectations after another offseason of re-tooling their roster under GM Chris Ballard. They've mades some offseason moves with a very popular trade, free agency, and have even added a few faces via the NFL Draft.
With such a mass of the unit no older than 25, and less than a handful of seasoned veterans sprinkled into the bunch, there's still a lot we don't know about how this group will grasp the 2020 season. One thing is for sure, this group has a lot of potential, and a lot to prove.
Today, in the second part of our positional breakdowns of the roster, we take a look at the Colts defense, it's offseason additions, and the overall growth that may be expected out of Matt Eberflus and his bunch this season. Matt Danely will go through each individual group, take a look through offseason moves, and describe what he envisions for them this year.
Has the position improved, remained largely even, or have they declined -- and which factors make it so? While we have a large amount of unknowns heading into the season with individual pieces this year, there's a lot we do know, and that will make this defense one of the more interesting, and fun groups to watch in the conference in 2020.

Colts Cast: Up or Down? Post draft positional look at the Colts offense
The Indianapolis Colts have new expectations after another offseason of re-tooling their roster under GM Chris Ballard. They've made some offseason moves through free agency, and have added a group of rookies through the NFL Draft. Now, we need to assess what these changes have done to this roster for the upcoming 2020 NFL season.
Today, in our first part of a two-part look, we take gander at the Colts' offense to see, by position, what the Colts have done in each area of the unit as a whole. Have they improved, stayed relatively level, or have they declined?
Ballard and the Colts have added to the quarterback position in, both, free agency as well as the draft. They've added to the backfield in a couple different ways, have added another type of tight end, as well as what they perceive to be the missing piece to the receiver corps from the second round of the draft, and have high hopes for an addition to the offensive line.
Overall, most likely feel that the offense is better than the 2019 version that was marred by key injuries, and very modest big-play ability to say the least. Is the 2020 version under Frank Reich actually better though? Matt Danely breaks down each position, gives them the "up" or "down" then delivers his all-encompassing opinion for the Colts scoring attack as a whole heading into the upcoming season.

Next, they talk about Zach Hicks' film breakdown interview with Colts DE Ben Banogu.

Colts Cast: Colts' 2020 NFL Draft recap, UDFAs complement draft haul
The Indianapolis Colts added pieces to improve their explosiveness on Day's 1 and 2 in the 2020 NFL Draft, along with improving in the secondary. On Day 3, the Colts added what they hope is their future at the QB position in Jacob Eason, as well as some help along the interior of the offensive line, and some contributors on the defensive side of the ball.
Overall, the Colts were very balanced in their approach to this year's draft, adding five picks offensively (4 of their first 5 selections), and another four picks to the defense. Chris Ballard moved up, he moved back, and in the end, navigated the draft much like we all expected him to.
Today Matt Danely will go through each of the Colts' picks, discuss their fit with the team, how they can improve their respective positions, and what this draft might do for the immediate, and long-term future of the organization. Additionally, Matt will go through all of the UDFAs that the Colts have added to this point.

Colts Cast: Colts Draft reactions, recap of Rounds 1-3
The Indianapolis Colts headed into the 2020 NFL Draft with no picks in the first round, and that remained true as they passed on trading into the first round as some suspected they may attempt to do. On Day 2, the Colts did make a trade, but it wasn't the path typical of GM Chris Ballard.
At the end of the day, the Colts did indeed make three picks, grabbing Michael Pittman at No. 34 overall, they moved up to No. 41 from 44 overall to take Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor, and added Julian Blackmon (DB) with the No. 85 overall selection after trading back from No. 75 overall (with the Lions).
Matt Danely is joined by the boys from Stampede Radio (Chris Blystone, Chris Shepherd, and Jim Campbell) to discuss their thoughts on how the first round played out, their reactions on the Colts picks on Day 2 of the NFL Draft, as well as some of what we all have witnessed with the 'virtual' aspect of the draft process thus far, including some interesting Roger Goodell takes.
The Colts, for now, still hold four more picks for Day three (Rounds 4-7), and have some clear areas of need that the guys discuss as well, as the Colts draft haul rounds into place.

Colts Cast: Colts 2020 NFL Draft Primer
There are less than 24 hours until the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft is officially underway. This year presents an interesting twist to the draft as the vast majority of it will be conducted in the homes of those participating, including the NFL Commish himself.
Chris Ballard, Frank Reich and their scouting staff have worked tirelessly for months upon months to get to this point in order to boost the skill of the Indianapolis Colts' roster. The boom stage of free agency has ended, and the Colts have made a few moves. Now, it's time for the team to use the draft for their bread and butter additions for the future of the organization.
Today, Matt Danely will discuss some of the pertinent news surrounding the team over the past couple weeks, including how recent additions will affect the team, as well as other additions that were brought in. Sheldon Day, Roosevelt Nix, T.J. Carrie, Xavier Rhodes just as a starting point to discuss the movement of the team.
Does this mean the Colts will focus on offense through this draft? While a healthy dose of their picks could come on that side of the ball, the defense needs some top talent as well.
Danely will go through his top positional needs for the Colts heading into the draft, discussing how he would prioritize them idealy, and he will also touch on the top five talents at those positions determined by the Stampede Blue team within their portions of the 2020 Draft Guide ($4.99). Matt finishes today's show by running through the top 30 players on the Stampede Blue big board as well.

Colts Cast: Rivers-Colts connection parallels to another HOF worthy QB
With the recent acquisition of Philip Rivers to the Indianapolis Colts, there are still some questions that can, and will only be answered by what we see on the field. We can look back on Rivers' history to tell us he's a Hall of Fame worthy quarterback when looking at the totality of his career, or we can pick and choose a few seasons, look at his stats and argue otherwise.
Additionally, the past season (23 TDs, 20 INTs) may be what some will hang on to and suggest that it's the beginning of the end for the former Chargers' passer. We can do this all off-season long, and the arguments could go back and forth, and nobody will actually be wrong.
Today, however, Matt Danely wants to talk about a possible parallel that Rivers could hold to another Hall of Fame quarterback that Colts' fans know very well. He went to another team after he was thought to be on his last leg, he took a young, underwhelming roster to the next level. And, it wasn't just off of his arm talent in which he was able to achieve that.
Matt talks the latest Colts news in free agency, releases, and re-signings, this intriguing parallel of top tier quarterbacks of our time, and speaks with Derek Togerson of NBC San Diego to discuss what Philip Rivers brings to this Colts roster that is dying to surge defensively, but deserves a top-notch all-time quarterback to get this offense to explode.

Colts Cast: Reaction to Colts trade for Buckner, first day of FA frenzy with Stampede Radio crew
Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts made an uncharacteristic splash on the first day of legal negotiations with a trade that sent their No. 13 overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
Chris Ballard has repeated the importance of the trenches being where the difference comes into play, and in netting Buckner, the Colts have a real interior presence against the run and in the way of creating interior pressure. Adding Buckner to the existing defensive front could be a real game changer for the Colts defense.
The boys from Stampede Radio (Chris Blystone, Chris Shepherd, and Jim Campbell) join Matt Danely to discuss the move from every angle.
Additionally, the guys discuss the rest of the AFC South, some of the other big moves made throughout the day, what the landscape now looks like at the quarterback position, as well as questioning what else is still available for the Colts and what each would prefer for the team's next move.

Colts Cast: Colts QB solutions through Free Agency/Draft with Mark Schofield
Despite the majority of the offseason talk being about the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback situation heading into free agency, and the NFL Draft, the fact is that the team simply hasn't been in this situation in recent memory. With all of the quarterbacks hitting free agency this year, and the abundance of possibilities in this year's draft, it only made sense to bring Mark Schofield onto the show for him to weigh in on the matter.
As far as free agency goes, the conversation of Philip Rivers and the Colts being a perfect marriage has dominated the headlines. Sure, there are other possibilities such as Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Tannehill and a list of others the Colts could possibly pursue, however, Mark has another free agent in mind who would fit the Colts' system perfectly, and give the team instant post-season potential.
Of course the big question, even after free agency quarterback dominoes begin to fall, is the Jacoby Brissett situation and the bevy of prospects in this year's draft.
Matt and Mark go in-depth on the top several possible targets as the Colts look to draft their heir to the position. The guys discuss competing thoughts on Tua, what there is to love about Justin Herbert, and what still needs work in his game, as well as how analysts, NFL teams, and the rest of us perceive Jordan Love and Jacob Eason.
Additionally, several other prospects are analyzed, including one quarterback who drew a remarkable comparison, in certain aspects of his game, to one of the best passers in the game today. Another signal-caller is given high praise as a guy who could stand in a huddle and immediately understand all aspects of the offense, as well as another who could be a mid-round selection and could give the Colts athleticism and a solid arm with a lot for Frank Reich to work with in a developmental role with the team. This one may even be a sleeper to succeed above all expectations.
In a nutshell, Matt and Mark ultimately wrap up the conversation until the beginning of free agency which will start to lend some answers to the Colts' path to rectify the position for the upcoming season.

Colts Cast: Latest News; Colts QB conundrum; Best offseason scenarios
The Indianapolis Colts are in a unique position this offseason in which they really have to consider multiple options to shore up their quarterback position. Additionally, the Colts need another legitimate weapon for whoever is under center in order to improve their overall offensive situation heading into the 2020 season.
The Colts and Philip Rivers have been linked since the day after the Super Bowl, and we'll discuss who benefits most from that marriage. Also, the Colts "like" Jacoby Brissett, there's some exciting quarterback prospects in this year's draft, but how do the Colts navigate this entire situation? Matt will go through the three possible outcomes of the offseason at the position, and how the team can set themselves up for the future long-term.
With some recent Colts news coming out regarding Anthony Castonzo, does his return completely alleviate the need for a highly regarded offensive lineman this offseason? We'll go through that as well as why the smart move to wait on an extension for Marlon Mack is the right approach.
Also on the docket on today's show, Matt runs through a couple best possible outcome situations -- one centered around an offensive early draft approach, and one defensive -- with a minimal amount of free agent acquisitions.
There's a lot to discuss as the 2020 NFL Combine gets under way tonight, and the 2020 NFL Draft is just a couple months out.

Colts Cast: Jam packed Senior Bowl Week recap with Chris Shepherd
There's a lot going on this weekend including the Pro Bowl where the Indianapolis Colts' Jack Doyle, Darius Leonard, and Quenton Nelson are all representing the organization, but all of the real focus is on the Senior Bowl in Mobile.
And this week, Stampede Blue has been well represented along with the coaching, and scouting staff of the Colts. Our own Chris Shepherd has been doing some great work including landing interviews with Hall of Fame GM Bill Polian, as well as Colts head coach Frank Reich.
On today's show, Shepherd joins Matt Danely to discuss several aspects of what he's witnessed this week. It's a fast-moving, 30 minute show packed with information including who was his largest riser on each side of the ball, which quarterbacks caught his eye, as well as which receivers, and those in the secondary who could be great fits for the Colts.
Shepherd also speaks about a couple of his favorite interviews from the week, and the highlights of his trip to Mobile.

Colts Cast: In-depth look at Colts UFAs, NFL free agents heading into 2020
As the playoffs get into the conference championships this weekend, the Indianapolis Colts are preparing for their evaluation of what they currently have on the roster. Chris Ballard, Frank Reich and their staff will need to assess which impending free agents to bring back, which to let go of, and which ones they see around the league they could bring in to help take the roster to the next level.
Today, Matt Danely will go through those unrestricted options for the Colts and parse through which he would bring back into the fold, and which he'd let go of. Not all of them will be easy decisions as Ballard attempts to combine the youth's improvement with those who are necessary retentions due to their veteran leadership and play on the field.
Additionally, Matt will touch on a couple extensions that need to be considered, as well as what the rest of the NFL has to offer in the area of free agency. Which positions could be improved with what's likely available, which positions may have to suffer another year in order to make it worth his while to add to the position, and which of those impending free agents may not even be available for the Colts to go out and grab.

Colts Cast: Deciphering Chris Ballard's end of season press conference with Chris Blystone
As he does at the end of each season, Chris Ballard sat behind a microphone for over an hour to give his thoughts on the Indianapolis Colts 2019 season in review.
Ballard, through his own recollections and through the team's local beat writers, was upfront and realistic in his end of the year discussion about the team and how the season turned into a 7-9 result after beginning at 5-2.
Ballard spoke, and was honest about Jacoby Brissett, his play, his lack of consistency, and the offense's poor performances throughout the year. He touched on providing the offense, and coaching staff with more weapons, how impressed he was with the offensive line's play, and much more.
Ballard also touched on who he felt had very big off-seasons coming up, who he thought was on this roster and was the best at his position in the league, and how he evaluated each position group.
Ballard was also quite reflective and honest about what he saw as his failures this year. Taking specific leadership for granted, and putting too much stock in youth at positions that needed a veteran presence was one that he spoke about that really got to him this year.
Ballard revealed a lot of his true feelings about his performance along with the team, and Matt Danely and Chris Blystone go through some bullet points of the lengthy press conference and what they felt was warranted, what they agreed with and disagreed with from Ballard.

Colts Cast: A look back at Week 17; Colts latest moves & looking to the future
The Indianapolis Colts dropped their season finale in Jacksonville similarly to how they've been playing since the midway point of the season. The Colts finished this disappointing season 2-7 down the stretch, and between injuries, poor quarterback play, an unbalanced group of skill position players, and dramatic issues with the special teams unit.
As the season has wrapped up and the Colts finish 7-9, Matt talks about several aspects of the team's season today. First, we discuss the Week 17 game briefly, then move on to discussing the difference between the Colts and another team in similar circumstances that was able to get past the injuries and common issues the Colts could not and what it was that got them through those issues.
Additionally, we talk about the roster in general, and what holes have opened up this season that were thought to be non-issues heading into the season, or even throughout this troubled year. And finally, we have a conversation about what the team is facing this offseason, a few contract extensions that recently took place, as well as the future contracts the team signed following the official end of their season.

Colts Cast: Colts finish home schedule with big 38-6 blowout of Panthers
The Indianapolis Colts were able to put up a resounding 'W' in their Week 16 matchup with the Carolina Panthers at Lucas Oil Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Most of the Colts success Sunday was due in large part to the return ability put on display by Nyheim Hines as he was able to return two punts for touchdowns, and another 40 yards to set up a touchdown as well. The Colts defense was good in the red zone, and the offense was able to score on three of their five trips as well.
Outside of that, the Colts' passing game was average at best, and filtering out two big runs by Marlon Mack (30 yards) and Jordan Wilkins (38 yards), along with a 24-yard scramble and 37 total rushing yards from Jacoby Brissett, the running game (113 yards at 4.1 YPC) was also pretty average against the worst rushing defense in the league.
Chase McLaughlin was 5-of-5 on extra points, and made his only field goal attempt, so it's nice to not be speaking about that as an issue the day after a game, and the Colts special teams in general were very solid collectively.
Jack Doyle was punched in the face, the team picked off rookie quarterback Will Grier three times, sacked him five times, and Quenton Nelson was placed in concussion protocol just to name a few of the story lines following the Colts final game in Lucas Oil Stadium for the 2019 season.

Colts Cast: Colts eliminated from playoff picture, embarrassed by Saints on MNF
The Indianapolis Colts came into their Monday Night Football matchup with the New Orleans Saints with very slim odds to earn a playoff berth. After their performance in the Superdome, it was obvious that the Colts did not deserve to play in the postseason. Thus, with the 34-7 loss, the Colts were eliminated from contention in embarrassing fashion.
The Colts were dominated by Drew Brees and the Saints' offense, as he broke Peyton Manning's career touchdown record as well as Philip Rivers' mark for the most accurate game in NFL history with a 97 percent completion rate (29-of-30). Meanwhile, Jacoby Brissett and the Colts' offense were never able to get anything started to combat what the Saints were able to do throughout the game.
Of their 8 possessions, the Colts punted on 6, turned the ball over on downs once, and were only able to score on their final drive of the game. The Colts were 3 of 12 on third down opportunities, totaled 205 yards on the night, and were only able to get a piece of Brees twice (zero sacks), and also only ran for 46 yards which is considered to be the team's identity.
It was ugly.
Brissett was inaccurate, and has put truly disgusting back-to-back first halves against the Bucs and Saints (11-of-31), and has yet to prove to Colts' fans that he deserves to be given the keys to the franchise as the team's quarterback of the future. After such a disappointing loss, and performance in general, there will continue to be a lot of questions asked between now and the NFL Draft about how the team can improve to become legitimate playoff, and Super Bowl contenders.
It certainly feels like they're further away today than they were at the beginning of the season. The Colts sit at 6-8, and finish the season against the Carolina Panthers this Sunday, then against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17.

Colts Cast: Colts face uphill battle in New Orleans on Monday Night Football
The Indianapolis Colts will have another tall task Monday night when they travel to New Orleans to face the 10-3 Saints on Monday Night Football.
The Saints have one of the top scoring offenses in the league, one of the best pass rushes as well, and the bad news for the Colts is that they don't do so well when their opponent possesses such skills. The Colts will be without Kenny Moore,
Another issue lies with the Saints being one of the highest passing yardage offenses in the league. The Colts have given up an average of 410 passing yards per game over the last three games, so yeah, that's not an ideal matchup for the Colts either.
On the other hand, the Colts are better offensively on third down, and significantly better defensively on third downs. The Colts also hold a sizable advantage in the red zone on both sides of the ball.
The Colts have to keep the Saints scoring down as they regularly hit the 30-point mark, however, when they don't when they don't, they have barely gotten into double digits. For the Colts sake, they should hope that Matt Eberflus and Frank Reich can dial up the gameplan the Jaguars, Rams, Cowboys, and Falcons did earlier in the year.
In those games, the Saints averaged 10.75 points per game. It may be unlikely the Colts can pull out such a massive win, but there's definitely a chance that they can leave New Orleans with the major upset.

Colts Cast: Colts can't close the deal in Tampa, fall to 6-7
The Indianapolis Colts have had multiple opportunities over the past month or more to solidify a berth into the post season, yet they've continued to falter late in games. The Colts' defense has been playing well over the past several weeks, however, their inability to stop big plays from opposing offenses has become a major issue for the team.
Sunday, the Colts suffered from not only their inability to stop big plays from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but also failed to sustain drives, didn't protect the ball when it was most needed, and they were too passive when they needed to remain aggressive.
The Colts really don't seem to be able to get out of their own way when it comes down to the biggest moments of the game, and as a result, they've lost 5 of their last 6 games and now sit at 6-7 with just three weeks to go.
The Houston Texans, and Tennessee Titans are both now 8-5, with the Titans being the hottest team in the division. A LOT needs to go right for the Colts to earn a spot in the post season, but reality tells us that just isn't in the cards this year.
Jacoby Brissett has yet to prove that he's capable of leading this team to victories purely off of his arm talent, several weapons have missed large portions of the year leaving the Colts an undermanned roster, and at this moment the Colts are simply very mediocre. Unfortunately, the team's play is forcing fans to take a look to the future, and the offseason already.
Can the Colts win their next three games, in conjunction with everything going right elsewhere to allow them into the playoffs? The percentages are highly stacked against them right now, but that's why they play the games.

Colts Cast: Tampa Bay Bucs present difficult task for waning Colts in Week 14
The Indianapolis Colts are 1-4 in their last five games, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won their last two, as the teams are set to square off in this Week 14 matchup.
Marlon Mack is back on the practice field, as is Parris Campbell, but T.Y. Hilton was a no-go in practice on Wednesday. For a struggling offense, the Colts are going to have to keep pace with a top-5 scoring offense led by Jameis Winston's aggressive approach under Bruce Arians.
Defensively the Bucs present a tough challenge as well. Though they aren't a consistent unit by any measure, they are aggressive as well and have a true game changer in Shaquil Barrett coming off the edge, and the Colts haven't fared well against those type of talents this season.
Can the Colts slow down the Bucs high-scoring offense under Jameis Winston' aggressive approach with Bruce Arians calling the shots? Or, will the Colts find themselves in a hole that they will be forced to climb out of, which is a skill this offense has yet to prove that they are capable of producing strictly through the air?
Matt Danely goes through all of the pertinent Colts news and notes as the team prepares for their Week 14 matchup they so desperately need to win if they hope to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Colts Cast: Colts fall to 6-6, and likely out of the playoff race with 31-17 loss to Titans
The Indianapolis Colts are not making things any easier on themselves as of late. After starting the season 5-2, the Colts have gone 1-4 in their last five games, and are all but out of the playoff picture at this point. This year's situation is almost exactly the opposite from a year ago where the Colts started the season 1-5, but battled back and go themselves a playoff berth, and a Wild Card win.
Any way you look at it, these are two stints, over two different seasons in which the Colts have gone 2-9 under Frank Reich. This isn't to say that Reich is less than a very good coach, however, something is certainly amiss with the decisions, production, and issues throughout the team.
The major issue this season, among others, has been special teams failures. Adam Vinatieri missed wide from 55 yards, sent a line drive that was blocked, and then a blocking failure allowed another to be blocked and returned for a touchdown that ultimately turned the tide in the Colts loss in Week 13. The Colts were up 17-7 in the third quarter, then allowed 24 unanswered points, and made plenty of mistakes along the way to hand the Titans a very important game for both teams.
Jacoby Brissett has been bad for one reason or another over the second half of the season, and continued that trajectory in Week 13, after looking pretty good in the first half. The running game didn't do much Sunday, the defense gave up some big plays again, and there was some questionable decision-making in this one as well.
The vision for Colts' fans has altered with this loss. Now, at 6-6, many fans are looking ahead to draft position. It's hard to blame them, as watching potential college draftees, is probably more fun than watching what the Colts have been doing week to week as of late.
Today, Matt will go through the good, and bad from the Colts' Week 13 loss, the look ahead, and what needs to change in order to keep the Colts organization moving forward with all of their young talent.

Colts Cast: Colts lack of firepower fails them in Thursday night 17-20 loss to Texans
The Indianapolis Colts were set up to take control of the AFC South with a huge road win against the Houston Texans Thursday night, but their lack of downfield attack, and inability to stop the Texans' playmakers put them on the losing end of this 17-20 final.
T.Y. Hilton was back in action, but was limited. The running game was effective, the defense was largely stout, and kept the Texans' running game in check for most of the night. However, the Colts' passing game was anemic at best. They completed only 4 passes to their wide receiver corps for the entire game, and failed to take any legitimate shots in attempt to break the game open when they held the lead.
Additionally, the Colts remained steady with their running attack when they fell behind late in the game, and ultimately they were unable to take advantage of the opportunities they were presented. The Colts were excellent on third down, didn't commit a lot of penalties, but still only managed about 4.5 yards per play despite dominating time of possession.
Deshaun Watson connected on big plays to Will Fuller V, and DeAndre Hopkins (2 touchdowns), and aside from a couple field goals, that was all it took to take down the Colts when so much of their game was good enough to take the victory.
Today on the Colts Cast, Matt Danely dives in to the issues plaguing the Colts' offense, and how there's plenty of blame to go around between the receivers, Jacoby Brissett, and Frank Reich himself.

Colts Cast: Colts face true test in Week 12 AFC South matchup with Texans w/Kevin Hickey of ColtsWire
The Indianapolis Colts bounced back in a big way in Week 11 as they dominated the ground attack, and put another quality defensive effort in the books. However, in Week 12, and on a short week at that, the Colts will have their hands full with Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans in NRG Stadium.
On today's show, Kevin Hickey of the Colts Wire, joins Matt Danely to take a look at the current state of the Colts, as well as a look ahead to their Thursday Night Football matchup.
The Colts have a few key pieces ruled out for the game, and another handful who are still questionable -- including T.Y. Hilton -- but luckily, the Texans are banged up as well.
This meeting could not be more important for the Colts. They currently have the same record as the Texans, but the Colts hold the tie-breaker as it currently stands. With a win Thursday night in Houston, the Colts will ultimately hold a two-game lead over their AFC South foes, and remain undefeated within the division.
The Colts will need to get their running game on track without Marlon Mack there to lead the way, the receiving corps may have to continue another game without Hilton, and the offensive line is looking to put another quality game together while improving their pass protection in the process.
The Colts' defense has been the team's strength over the past several weeks, and they're going to need another impressive outing against Watson and this Texans' offense who will be looking to bounce back after a massive Week 11 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Matt and Kevin discuss all of this and more as the Colts hope to create more space between themselves and the rest of the AFC South.

Colts Cast: Colts finally get run-away victory over Jaguars 33-13
The Indianapolis Colts dominated the Jacksonville Jaguars in their Week 11, AFC South matchup 33-13 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Colts weren't so dominating in the first half leading 10-7 at intermission, but they did keep the Jaguars from getting into scoring position after their first scoring drive of the game by stopping the run, and getting some pressure on Nick Foles to keep his accuracy down.
The Colts had big games from Marlon Mack and Jonathan Williams (27 carries for 225 yards), which continually kept the Colts in good field position, combined with their defense continuing to do their job as they have for the past month or so.
Rock Ya-Sin got his first interception of the season, Bobby Okereke picked off Foles and returned it for two points as well. The Colts defense had 10 passes defensed in this and continued to pressure Foles in the second half making the Jaguars a one-dimensional team late in this one.
Kenny Moore had a great game in this one, Marcus Johnson showed up for the Colts at the WR position, and Jacoby Brissett was pretty decent in his first game back under center as well.

Colts Cast: Colts can't get out of their own way in Week 10 loss to lowly Dolphins
The Indianapolis Colts have had a rough go at it lately. The Colts offense, and special teams has been anemic to say the least, but their defense has been doing enough to do their part towards a win. However, the Colts couldn't pull out a win in Pittsburgh, and now they've taken a loss to the Miami Dolphins at home.
Brian Hoyer's QBR? Yes, a righteous 4.4, with a 46% completion rate and 3 interceptions. This was the most disgusting outing for a Colts quarterback in most fan's memory bank, and I have no clue how you can put that back out onto the field and expect the rest of the Colts' offense to have any confidence in their gameplan.
Frank Reich has had better days as well. Knowing that Hoyer is who he is, Reich hasn't done many favors by throwing out a totally predictable gameplan, and failing to get Hoyer up to speed is concerning, but not all of his fault either. Hoyer is terrible, that's just the sad truth of the matter, and a coach can only do so much when the decision-making and execution isn't there.
Today talks of Adam Vinatieri and how he should be let go will persist, just as they have for weeks now. And nobody should be considered less of a fan for thinking so. With a ninth straight one-score game to start the season, this team is proving their neither capable, or interested in putting a complete game together in order to legitimately battle for the AFC South title.
The Colts have a lot of soul searching to do, and even further searching into how those who aren't pulling their own weight should not be playing between the lines every Sunday. From the coaching staff, down to the 53rd man on the roster, this team has a ton of work ahead of them just to be an above average team going forward.

Colts Cast: Third quarter season predictions with Jim Campbell
The Indianapolis Colts have had their ups and downs thus far throughout the season. On one hand, their sitting pretty well with their record. On the other, every game has been a one-score affair and the overall play of the team has suffered.
Their next four games are largely favorable with a Week 10 matchup with the Miami Dolphins, Week 11 is their first meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Week 12 they travel to the Houston Texans, then they return home against the Tennessee Titans.
Three of their four games in this quarter are at Lucas Oil Stadium, and they desperately need to sweep these games if at all possible as they currently sit a half-game behind the Texans in the AFC South.

Colts Cast: Colts on the wrong side of another one-score game; The good, bad, and ugly from Week 9 loss to Steelers
The Indianapolis Colts had a lot working against them before they ever stepped on the field in Pittsburgh Sunday. But, things got more difficult in a hurry with the loss of Jacoby Brissett, and Ryan Kelly in the first half. Still, the Colts had an opportunity to win on the road and a missed field goal attempt proved to be the difference in the game as the Colts fell to the Steelers 26-24.
With T.Y. Hilton out at least for the next few weeks, the Colts had to make due with a largely inexperienced wide receiver corps. Deon Cain wasn't able to make anything happen on his two targets (one a drop), however, aside from a handful of drops by the pass-catchers, the unit wasn't a detriment to the team in spite of the loss of Hilton in the lineup.
The team did stack up a healthy dose of costly penalties, wasn't able to win the turnover battle, and simply gave up too many free points which proved to be the nail in the coffin for the team on the road.
But, it wasn't all bad either.
The Colts defense held the Steelers to 4.5 yards per play, 1-of-4 in the red zone, and was able to hold them to 5-of-13 on third down opportunities. This is the fourth game in a row in which the defense has been a positive for the Colts, yet the team continues to be in dog fights and have now had all of their games decided by one score. The Colts' luck simply ran out in that category in Week 9.
Parris Campbell had a nice game, Brian Hoyer did about as well as one could expect given his limitations, and Marlon Mack ran well behind an offensive line that has been failing to protect in the pass game or block efficiently in the running game recently.
The Colts had multiple opportunities, but simply weren't good enough with sub-par overall play, and minus their top players at some pretty important positions. The Colts are now 5-3 (2-0 in AFC South) and are still in good shape if they can bounce back and win games they're supposed to win from here on out. The Colts host the Miami Dolphins in Week 10, and need an impressive win to regain the confidence of the fan base to get back on track.

Colts Cast: Colts will get all they can handle with the Steelers in Week 9; Alex Kozora breaks down Steelers' strengths
The Indianapolis Colts got all they could handle with the Denver Broncos' defense last week in a tight 15-13 win at Lucas Oil Stadium. This week, they travel to Pittsburgh to battle the Steelers, and their defense is even better, and the Colts will be without their best offensive playmaker to boot.
The Steelers may come into Week 9 at 3-4, but they've lost three of those four games by a total of 9 points, and have won their three games by an average of more than 14 points. Being that the Colts have had all seven of their games remain within one score, it's unlikely that they will have some revelation of offensive explosiveness against a top-10 defense, and light on explosion themselves.
The Colts' defense, however, may be in position to make the largest impact as they've greatly improved recently, and Mason Rudolph is certainly no Ben Roethlisberger, and their backfield is short of playmakers now as well. The Colts still have work to do as the Steelers have a good offensive line protecting Rudolph thus far.
Who will step in and assume the workload voided by T.Y. Hilton's absence? What other options do the Steelers have outside of Ju-Ju Smith-Schuster? What does the Colts' defense have to feast on in order to keep the Colts offense in position to control the game? Can Braden Smith handle T.J. Watt on the edge?
We discuss all of this and more on today's show. Plus, Alex Kozora, from Steelers Depot, stops by to give us the insight on the Steelers we need to prepare for what we'll see on Sunday in Pittsburgh.

They talk about how Mason Rudolph has looked so far, and how the Colts may try to limit his effectiveness from a defensive standpoint.
Then, they dig into the talented Steelers defense and discuss their success in creating turnovers and how the Colts will need to play in order to be successful against a good defensive group.

Colts Cast: Colts close out ugly win over Broncos, move to 5-2
The Indianapolis Colts came into their Week 8 matchup with the Denver Broncos as one of the hotter teams in the NFL. Big wins over the Chiefs and Texans forced the national audience to take notice and see what the team could do next as they find themselves on top of the AFC South, and looking to make a run at the playoffs.
Well, the Colts did pull out a 15-13 win at home, but they didn't look very convincing through the process to say the least. The Colts started out with their inactive list by having Quincy Wilson and Deon Cain off the field, which does nothing but add to questions of how the team feels about the two of them. Is Wilson in line to be moved? Maybe even Cain? Or was Sunday just a day to see what the team has in other receivers and options in the Colts' secondary?
There were a host of issues with the team Sunday. The offensive line was dominated like we haven't seen in at least two seasons. The receivers weren't getting open consistently when Jacoby Brissett did have time to throw. The running game was okay, but the Colts had only 87 total yards before their final drive of the first half.
Defensively, the team was decent, and was able to hold the Broncos to field goals or forced them to punt on multiple drives which ultimately saved the offense's tail in this one. Additionally, Adam Vinatieri reverted back to missing field goals and extra points in this one which nearly cost the Colts another game.
I think it's fair to say that Frank Reich didn't have a great game behind the headset either, and though we often shower him with praise, Reich earned some tomatoes Sunday afternoon.
In the end, a near safety turned into a 35-yard reception, which led to a Vinatieri field goal to win the game in spite of all that was wrong for 59 minutes of this game.

Colts Cast: Why Deon Cain isn't reaching his ceiling in 2019; Colts top PFF grades
The Indianapolis Colts are coming off of two impressive wins, and now are set to take on a very favorable section of their schedule over the next several weeks. That all starts with the Denver Broncos visiting Lucas Oil Stadium this Sunday.
The Colts' offense is a bit of a conundrum in that they have several facets of their game in which they sit amongst the top 10 of the NFL including third down percentage, penalty yardage, time of possession and more. On the other hand, they sit near the bottom in yardage per game, yardage per play and more.
So, how exactly is this offense being seen by other teams? Additionally, the defense has been inconsistent to say the least, yet each side of the ball has some big-play ability that isn't truly being harnessed right now.
How will the Colts stifle the Broncos this Sunday? Can they wear down their defense as they have others in recent weeks? Can the defense stop the Broncos' running game and get to Joe Flacco throughout the game in order to cause some turnovers and rack up some sacks in the process? We'll take a look in today's show.
We also take a brief look at the Colts' top PFF grades, what does that mean, and how confident can the team be going forward with some of their better players taking a while to get up to speed?
Finally, Matt looks at the lack of production from receiver Deon Cain. Cain was a training camp darling in his rookie season before he was sidelined for the year with an injury. This year he's yet to do anything of note in spite of being on the field more than enough to get some production for this offense.
We'll take a look at the film to see what his play versus the play of others including Jacoby Brissett, Frank Reich's role in Cain failing to make an impact, as well as what the rest of the receiving corps has to do with Cain being just a guy on the unit at this point. Does Zach Pascal's rise have anything to do with it? Is T.Y. Hilton too much of a target alongside the tight end group of Jack Doyle and Eric Ebron? We'll touch on a little bit of everything in order to look for an answer.

Colts Cast: Examining Colts Week 7 AFCS win, recent success; Listener call-ins
The Indianapolis Colts have gone from an unknown commodity to being considered a force in the AFC in just a matter of a few weeks. They took out the Kansas City Chiefs on the road, and followed that up with a huge victory over AFC South foes, the Houston Texans.
Jacoby Brissett, and the Colts offense, has appeared to be reliant on their running game for success, but after a career game in passing yardage and touchdowns, there seems to be a larger trust factor being given to the Colts' signal caller.
Head coach Frank Reich has shown that his trust in Brissett has not wavered, and the roster looks to be in lock-step with their play-caller. The team's defense has also shown up the past two games. The return of Darius Leonard proved to be valuable in his ability to disrupt the Texans' offense, and give the defense a little extra confidence heading into their pivotal Week 7 AFC South matchup as well.
On today's show, Chris Blystone joins Matt Danely as the two discuss the Colts' recent success, plenty about Brissett and his ability, how the defense deserves more credit for Sunday's victory than they're probably being given, the remainder of the Colts schedule, what may be the issue with Deon Cain failing to really make an impact, and much more.
Additionally, Matt and Chris take a couple listener call-ins to get their take on the team and how they feel the Colts are doing right now. We didn't get a lot of calls, but we hope to do a call-in show weekly from here on out and hope that our great Stampede Blue community will participate as they did last season.

In this episode, the guys take a look at the latest injury updates before diving into the upcoming divisional match-up between the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts. They look at how the Texans offense matches up with the Colts defense on the ground and through the air. They talk about what the Colts need to do to limit Deshaun Watson's effectiveness and slow the balanced attack from the Texans.
Then they take a look at the Texans defense and how it has changed, as well as how they are likely to be impacted by injuries to their defensive backfield and whether Jacoby Brissett and T.Y. Hilton can take advantage of it.

Colts Cast: Colts need Week 7 vs Houston to set tone for remainder of season
The Indianapolis Colts are coming off of their bye week following a huge road victory against the Kansas City Chiefs. Oddly enough, the Houston Texans are coming off a road win against the Chiefs as well. If there's a game this season that the Colts need to set the tone for the remainder of their year, it's Week 7 when they host the Texans in a major AFC South battle.
The Colts and Texans are strangely similar in terms of success, and the lack thereof on either side of the ball. Their respective offenses are both rated in the top 10 of the league, despite being completely different in nature, and their defenses are both pretty bad in terms of overall success as well according to drive success rates Football Outsiders.
The Texans are still riding high off of their win in Arrowhead, but the Colts have had some time to come down after theirs due to their bye week. The Colts are going to have to find a way to replace their pass rush that was boosted by Kemoko Turay, otherwise we could see Deshaun Watson running wild if the Colts use more of a man-to-man look to shut down the Texans' receivers.
This game has a lot to look forward to. Can the Colts limit the impact that guys like J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus have on the offense, and can the return of Darius Leonard give the Colts' defense the spark they so desperately needed as they hit the home stretch of the season?
Frank Reich will have his hands full designing a game plan for a dangerous Texans' secondary, and Matt Eberflus will need to follow up his game against the Chiefs with possibly an even better performance from his defense against this Texans' offense.

Colts Cast: Examining what Jacoby Brissett is to the Colts; Updated Colts PFF grades
The Indianapolis Colts are coming off of their most impressive win of the season by far, and it just so happens that their quarterback didn't clear 200 passing yards and didn't throw a touchdown. But, does that really describe how Jacoby Brissett has played thus far in the year? Does it mean that he didn't have a good game simply because his statistics in Week 5 weren't spectacular?
There are differing opinions on Brissett through the first five weeks of the season. He's not the top-5 QB that Andrew Luck was entering this season before he retired. He's also not the same quarterback we saw play most of the season in 2017 either.
So, what is Brissett?
Today, Matt goes into what he sees in the Colts' starting quarterback. What sort of season is he on pace for this year? Who is he to this offense, and does he have another "it" factor as opposed to having it on the field?
There are a lot of questions surrounding the QB. Several analysts are trying to nail down exactly what level Brissett will sit at the rest of the year, and into the future. Well, Matt takes his shot at it today.
Additionally, Matt goes through the updated PFF grades for the Colts through Week 5. A few have become risers on the analytical site, while at other positions, there are multiple players seeing exactly what a slippery slope looks like.

Colts Cast: Colts' defense comes alive in 19-13 road win over Chiefs
The Indianapolis Colts had no chance to take a Week 5 win at Arrowhead against the Kansas City Chiefs. Nationally, locally, anywhere. Except that they did, and they executed the perfect gameplan to achieve an improbable win.
The Colts' 'feast or famine' pass rush showed up in a major way sacking Patrick Mahomes 4 times and created pressure on him all night long. The running game was as efficient as it's ever been, the offensive line was dominant, and Jacoby Brissett was very good. And if you can believe this, the Colts won by only getting in the end zone once, on the road, against a team that hadn't score fewer than 26 points in two years.
One of the more impressive points on this game, is how the Colts were successful getting out of their typical defensive scheme, how they did so much of their damage with a lot of their top defensive players inactive, and they quite literally dominated a team that spends a lot of their time dominating others.
Frank Reich was able to design another winning approach, and despite his modest performance, T.Y. Hilton was a huge factor in this game after being on the injury report all week. Additionally, Marlon Mack, who was also questionable coming into Sunday night's game, may have been the piece the Colts needed the most and he came through in a big way looking as healthy as ever.
Sunday's win may have been the best "team" win we've witnessed in a long time for the Colts. Going forward, this may be something that we see quite a bit more of than we did in the Andrew Luck years where so much of the onus was on his shoulders to be great.
On today's show, Matt goes through all of his random thoughts on the game, and also runs through the situational aspect of the matchup through each drive from both teams.

Colts Cast: Updated PFF Grades; Second quarter predictions w/Jim Campbell
The Indianapolis Colts did not have much of a showing at all in Week 4 against the Oakland Raiders. Their 31-24 loss was worse than the score would indicate, but they've got an even tougher test in Week 5 with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Colts injury concerns haven't lessened as they have a lengthy injury report early on this week as well, and to top it off, they are about as bad as they've been in terms of execution, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
On today's show Matt will go through and analyze the Colts' updated PFF grades through the first quarter of the season to start things off.
The Colts, surprisingly enough, do have some guys who are having really good seasons up to this point including a couple rookies. There's a bit of a surprise with the Colts' tight end group, there's another stud along the offensive line that many have forgotten how good he is, and there is also a few having really poor seasons and are plummeting down the ranks.
Additionally, Matt brings back Jim Campbell to discuss the Colts' second quarter of the season after they've started 2-2 through the first four weeks. As we've mentioned, the Chiefs host the Colts on Sunday Night Football, then the team has their bye week in Week 6.
In Week 7 the Colts host the Houston Texans, they host the Denver Broncos in Week 8, then they travel to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 9. As it turns out, Matt and Jim have differing ideas of how these next four games will turn out.

Colts Cast: Colts show up late to the party in 31-24 loss to Raiders
The Indianapolis Colts limped into their Week 4 matchup against the Oakland Raiders as T.Y. Hilton, Darius Leonard and Tyquan Lewis were unable to suit up. But there was far more wrong with the team than injuries in this one.
The Colts got behind early and neither side of the ball was doing their respective jobs with any success. The Colts committed penalties with really poor timing, negating positive plays away from the penalty, were manhandled up front on both sides of the ball, and the team simply can't make a play right now.
Offensively, the Colts' couldn't hang on to the ball, couldn't stop the Raiders from getting pressure in the backfield, and it probably wasn't Frank Reich's best day as a play-caller either.
Defensively, the issues are abundant. Is some of it spotty work out of Matt Eberflus? It's hard to not think he's struggling to find his groove with this group, but the players themselves are shouldering a lot of the blame -- and most of it. They aren't making plays, they're not forcing turnovers, they're not getting pressure on the quarterback, they're not stopping the run... and the list goes on from there.
The Colts leave Week 4 sitting at 2-2, with others from the AFC South feeling better with their situations than the Colts should be. Jacksonville is thriving with a rookie late-round quarterback, and the Tennessee Titans blew out the Atlanta Falcons yesterday as well. The Colts will go in to Week 5 against the Kansas City Chiefs with absolutely no momentum, and we still don't know who will be healthy for that one.
The Colts need to have a great week just to get competitive against a team that grooved them in the playoffs a year ago. The team we saw yesterday won't win many football games this year if health and overall play and execution aren't vastly improved over the next couple weeks.

Colts Cast: Colts positional needs, Week 4 comparisons and Colts' PFF grades
The Indianapolis Colts are in an interesting place heading into their Week 4 matchup with the Oakland Raiders. Their defense has stalled in multiple aspects, but the offense has been one of the sweetest surprises, seemingly not missing a beat with Jacoby Brissett under center.
The team is missing Malik Hooker, Darius Leonard, and Tyquan Lewis, three important pieces at all three levels of their defense. Now, some rookies are going to be filling in and hoping to make a splash themselves. Today Matt Danely will go in detail about how this thing will hold up, how Frank Reich has gotten in the head of the roster without them knowing it, as well as some thoughts on several positions.
The safety group is going to have to find someone step up in coverage as Khari Willis has proven himself worthy of being the physical presence they need him to be. The receiver group is also in a pickle as T.Y. Hilton may be on the shelf. How can Deon Cain, Paris Campbell, and even Zach Pascal step up to the challenge and do it without the presence of Hilton on the field?
Today we'll also go into the Pro Football Focus grades for the Colts for the first time this season. Additionally, we'll take a look at Football Outsiders and some basic NFL stat comparisons between the Colts and Raiders heading into their Week 4 matchup.

Colts Cast: Brissett comes through, defense stands up to get Colts to 2-1
The Indianapolis Colts came into their home opener being looked at as a bit of a wild card team throughout the national audience. The left Week 3 a 2-1 team that controlled large portions of the game and featured their quarterback rising to the occasion.
The Colts only had 7 drives throughout the entire game and had 5 of those 7 possessions last at least 9 plays. Jacoby Brissett was excellent, the defense came through when they had to, and several players had excellent games, both, statistically as well as in a somewhat quiet manner.
Anthony Walker, Kenny Moore, Bobby Okereke, Quincy Wilson, the offensive line, Nyheim Hines and the list goes on. All of these guys played their butts off in route to the team's second win of the season.
The Colts second half is being a bit misconstrued as a bad half simply because they didn't put a lot of points on the board. That's not the case and we'll talk about why that is. We'll also discuss what issues the Colts still have going forward, as well as how the trickle down from front office, to coach, the rest of the staff, and all through the roster is playing a major role in the team's success.
The Colts are in a much better position than most have guessed they'd be at this point in the year, and the rest of the schedule is looking like the Colts could actually do some damage as it progresses. It's a great time to be a Colts fan despite all that the team has been through so far.

Colts Cast: Colts hold several advantages in Week 3 meeting with Falcons; Week 3 predictions
The Indianapolis Colts are heading into their Week 3 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons for their home opener. The team does have some injury concerns to consider, but are still largely healthy, and will be getting Kemoko Turay back in the lineup after missing action in Week 2.
Today Matt Danely takes a look at some telling statistics that may very well tell the story of this game should the Colts be a able to hit on what they have been to this point in the season. With that said, we know that the Falcons have one of the most dynamic receivers in the game, and a quarterback who is more than capable of putting a fantastic game together.
Conversely, the Colts have a better offense and defense, by the numbers to this point.
Matt also discusses some Colts news after Friday's injury report was released and what that may mean for the team. Additionally, Matt goes through his Week 3 predictions, both, for the team in terms of win/lose expectations, as well as some individual performances that he expects to see.

Next they discuss the Falcons' defense and how the Colts match up with them. They talk about where the Colts might find advantages when running the football, and how Shepherd feels about Grady Jarrett's ability to be a disruptive force. Colts Cast: Who actually fills Funchess' role in the offense; Week 2 Colts predictions vs Titans
The Indianapolis Colts travel to music city to take on the Tennessee Titans in a Week 2, AFC South showdown. In a sense, the Colts really need this win to avoid falling two games behind the Titans this early in the season, and to get some of their confidence back that they left their Week 1 matchup with.
Today Matt Danely will go through one of the topics that have been on the tip of everyone's tongue since Devin Funchess' collarbone injury; Will Deon Cain break out and take on that role within the offense? Well, Matt isn't so sure that that's what he'll be doing, and he has another candidate if we're actually talking about filling Funchess' role in Frank Reich's offense.
We'll also run through some Week 2 predictions for the Colts, as well as what we might see now that Kemoko Turay has been designated as OUT for tomorrow's matchup.
Speaking of the Colts' defensive front, will we see Tyquan Lewis Sunday? We definitely should with some guys up front on the injury list. Matt also has a bit of a prophecy for how Lewis might be used against an ailing Titans offensive line.

Colts Cast: Colts give one away to Chargers in Week 1
The Indianapolis Colts had some questions heading into Week 1 of the 2019 season against the Los Angeles Chargers. How would Jacoby Brissett handle his new role? Could the defense hold up against Philip Rivers? Would the running game be there as many questioned the offensive line throughout the preseason?
There were plenty more, but the Colts came back with definitive answers for most of them.
The one thing the Colts, and fans, didn't expect to have to worry about was Adam Vinatieri and the special teams units. This turned out to be a major factor, and quite honestly, THE major factor in deciding this Week 1 West Coast trip for the Colts.
We got a really good look at Brissett, Mack showed his electric speed and agility, the offensive line was largely pretty good all day, and the defense continued last year's trend of taking the ball away from the opposition. These are all great things to witness, but the Colts had too many unforced errors in this one, which truly turned the score on its head.
The Colts found out first hand how the scoreboard looks after giving one of the best quarterbacks in the league too many opportunities, and they have several similar tests left in the year as well. Let's just hope that the Colts OT loss to the Chargers Sunday will serve as a reminder to the roster and the coaching staff of how important each snap is, especially given their strength of schedule.

Colts Cast: Colts first quarter of season predictions; Who's your guy? - with Jim Campbell
The Indianapolis Colts are just hours away from kicking off their 2019 season against the Los Angeles Chargers. While our projections for the Colts' season were sky high with Andrew Luck, common sense tells us that most fans have a much softer approach to guessing the team's record now that Jacoby Brissett is considered to be the franchise quarterback.
On today's show, Jim Campbell, from Stampede Radio, joins Matt Danely in taking a realistic stab at projecting the first quarter of the Colts season for 2019.
The Colts obviously face off against the Chargers in Week 1, divisional foe Tennessee Titans in Week 2, the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3, and wrap up the first four games at home against the Oakland Raiders.
Additionally, Matt and Jim go through the Colts' roster to pick out one player who they see as a guy who could take a leap so to speak this season and really show out for the team, and they also go the other way in attempting to identify a player who may slip this year for one reason or another.
Having not seen the team in a real game to this point, projecting all of this is a bit of a shot in the dark, but you might be surprised by Matt and Jim's expectations regardless of who is under center this year.

Colts Cast: How Brissett can successfully lead the Colts; No surprises with 53-man roster
The Indianapolis Colts are headed into Week 1 and with the 53-man roster cutdowns came a ton of Colts news these past few days.
First and foremost, the roster cutdown. While there weren't any real surprises, there were still a couple moves that came as a result of some shuffling. The Colts needed to add a quarterback as Chad Kelly was set to hit his suspension for the first two weeks of the regular season, and it was again a veteran guy brought in who has some familiarity with Brissett himself.
Along with the initial roster construction for the season, each position has some unique players, solid rotational benefits and some possible game-changers that we'll discuss on today's show. We'll also take a quick look at the Colts first unofficial depth chart for the season.
Additionally, Brissett who is now standing atop the Colts depth chart at QB, was given a new deal and with that come great expectations. Was his payday an issue? Well, it was to some, but we'll discuss why it shouldn't be.
Speaking of Brissett, which we did quite a bit of on today's Colts Cast, we'll go through how he can improve on his 2017 season, what he's already shown in that respect, and how this system can benefit his play as well as give him some of the natural transition to becoming a more in-depth quarterback in all phases. There is plenty for him to improve on from that 2017 season, but these two situations are not the same, and Frank Reich will do everything he can to get Brissett ready.
How will his approach change in terms of his reads, his aggression, his ability to read the defenses pre-snap, and how can he manipulate the defenses as the play progresses? All that and much more on today's Colts Cast with Matt Danely.

Colts Cast: Final Preaseason 53-man Roster Prediction
As the Indianapolis Colts final preseason game of 2019 looms closer, the team's roster is beginning to get a little bit of clarity. Most of the positions largely are clear in who the starters will be, and immediate backups appear to be set as well.
Where the questions come in to play, each and every year, is who will be primarily a special teamer? Who has done enough to make this roster without a heavy special teams presence? And, which position can pull that extra player as a result of the first two questions.
Today, Matt Danely goes through each of the positions on both sides of the ball, puts his roster prediction together, but leaves that ever elusive 53rd man slot on the roster open for discussion.

Finally, They spend a few minutes sharing their own reactions to hearing about Luck's retirement, and give some reason for hopefulness as they, like most of Colts nation, attempt to move on now that the Andrew Luck era in Indianapolis has ended.

Colts Cast: Dissecting Colts Preseason Week 3 performances
The Indianapolis Colts have now met another large preseason roadblock with the recent news of Andrew Luck announcing his retirement.
However, the Colts have a lot going for them as the roster itself is in much better shape than it has been in recent years. Jacoby Brissett has now been thrust into the starter role as he's desired since getting the bulk of the starts in 2017.
The Colts hosted the Chicago Bears on Saturday night and there was a lot to be excited about on both sides of the ball. The Colts lost 27-17, but that's not really what we're talking about here. With Chad Kelly getting more snaps, and making them count quite a bit now that the backup QB role is there for the taking, we'll discuss his performance, how he has appeared to acquired some instant chemistry with Deon Cain, and how the perspective on him has vastly altered since his initial signing.
We also discuss the team's defensive improvements and which positions have benefited the most as the team prepares for the 2019 season.

Colts Cast: Andrew Luck abruptly retires from NFL two weeks before Week 1
There is so much to say about what Andrew Luck has done for the Indianapolis Colts and their fanbase. None of us expected to be talking about THIS today though. In a decision that not only had people checking, and double checking to determine the accuracy of an Adam Schefter tweet, but maybe it was somehow a fake account, or maybe he'd been hacked,
Unfortunately, it's accuracy was soon verified and Andrew Luck gave an impromptu press conference following the Colts' third preseason game to acknowledge that he had indeed decided to retire from the NFL after nagging injuries had built up, and the process of pain, rehab and then more pain and rehab had soured his love for the process.

Colts Cast: A second look at Colts Vs Browns Preseason Week 2
The Indianapolis Colts lost their Preseason Week 2 matchup with the Cleveland Browns 21-18 after joint practices between the two teams.Today, Matt Danely returns to the Colts Cast to dig in to the Colts second preseason game as well as how the team has evolved between their first two live matchups outside of training camp.
The Colts showed some interesting improvements as well as some continual areas of needed improvement for the team in general, but also had individual growth with several on the roster. The Colts have seen some needed improvement out of Kemoko Turay between his rookie year and his second season, Al-Quadin Muhammad has impressed through camp and through the first two weeks, and the secondary has some very intriguing parts to it this season with improvements from Quincy Wilson and the added toughness that a rookie like Rock Ya-Sin brings to the unit.
The offensive line, the running back corps, and the team's receivers have a very good mix of experience and youth with playmaking ability to give the offense a well-rounded approach in Frank Reich's second year at the helm.
The Andrew Luck saga continues, but the team looks like they can be a threat with the ball as Jacoby Brissett has grown into a more complete quarterback and showed us all as much in Week 2 versus the Browns' pass rush.
All in all, the Colts are a fun group to watch in the preseason and the regular season should be just as exciting for Colts fans looking for this group to become a consistent contender for years to come.
