The Flop House

The Flop House

By MaximumFun, Dan McCoy, Stuart Wellington, Elliott Kalan

The Flop House is a comedy podcast devoted to the worst in recent film. Your hosts (Elliott Kalan, Dan McCoy, and Stuart Wellington) watch a questionable film, then engage in an unscripted discussion about the movie's shortcomings and occasional delights, while never being afraid of a pointless, silly digression or two hundred.

Ep.#439 - The Avengers (1998), LIVE!

We took a short break around Thanksgiving, which means YOU finally get to hear one of our LIVE episodes from Oxford's inaugural Saint Audio Podcast Festival! We were extremely excited to finally do a show in the UK and see some listeners from across the pond, and -- because we were in England -- we HAD to talk about 1998's The Avengers (aka "the non-Marvel-one), a legendary mega-flop and a despoiling of a beloved British TV series.Note: We performed in Oxford's Town Hall, which was an absolutely gorgeous venue, but was also very large and echoey. We did what we could to minimize the effects, but we apologize that the audio does come with a little extra reverb! We’re in season 2 of FlopTV! Ep.#438 - Trap, with Linda Holmes

"But Trap wasn't a flop!" you scream to the heavens. "Neither financially, nor critically!" you wail, desperately. "It made 83 million on a 30 million budget! And it got a mixed, but not-awful 52 on Metacritic!" But the uncaring Gods of Flop offer no comfort. Because whatever your personal feelings, Trap has inspired STRONG OPINIONS, and besides, when you have a great guest like Linda Holmes, you surrender to the whims of the floppiverse. We’re in season 2 of FlopTV! Ep.#437 - Megalopolis, with Roman Mars

You KNEW this episode was coming, and we got to it as soon as we could! We discuss Francis Ford Coppola's defiantly personal, defiantly incomprehensible, personal-fortune-destroying Megalopolis! And for such a megaflopolis episode we enlisted the help of Roman Mars, a man who knows a thing or two about architecture and design, and who's currently co-hosting a podcast series with Elliott about The Power Broker, a book about Robert Moses (clearly an inspiration for Adam Driver's "what if Robert Moses but not totally evil" character)! We’re in season 2 of FlopTV! Bad news first: we discussed Dear David, a horror movie based on a Twitter thread posted by a guy who used to do comics for Buzzfeed, released by "Buzzfeed Studios" -- a sentence that gives us a headache just to type. The good news? We're joined by Star of the Show, Hallie Haglund, whose ever-delightful presence inspires us all into a lot of giggle fits and silly bits! We’re in season 2 of FlopTV! For our second Smalltember/Smallvember pick, we take on a film that Dan vetoed last year because he feared his fragile psyche could not take a repeat viewing, but -- like a bad giant golden robot -- it always turns up! It's that time of year again! Smalltember (or Smallvember, if you're nasty)! Ep.#432 - IF, Live!

From the visionary mind of John Krasinski, Stuart's number one favorite human, comes IF! It's a whimsical tale about how imaginary friends are real and we should have them even as adults, and if we decide to forget them, they'll die or something! Did this sit well with us? Probably not! Ep.#430 - The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, LIVE, with Griffin Newman!

Elliott long claimed we would NEVER do the Garbage Pail Kids Movie, due to its extreme unpleasantness, but it only took a live show and the participation of our most GPK-pushing pal, Mr. Griffin Newman, of the excellent Blank Check podcast to break his resolve. What other core principles can we make Elliott discard? Ep.#427 - Disclosure, with Meredith Scardino

We were super-excited to welcome Meredith Scardino, the brilliant writer of a billion comedy things, but most recently the creator and showrunner of the hilarious Girls5Eva. If you haven't watched, please ask yourself what you've been doing with your life, then run over to Netflix to correct your error. We'll wait. Once you're done, you'll be all the MORE excited to hear her discuss 1994's Disclosure, a film that (in the words of Dan's Letterboxd) "Begins as a dumb and offensive sexual harassment thriller, then wisely pivots into an offensively dumb techno-thriller." But what do the other Peaches think? Listen and find out! Also, this episode is about a film featuring the iconic Donald Sutherland, who was still with us at the time of this recording, but who died just recently at the age of 88. We had nothing but good things to say about Mr. Sutherland, even in this silly movie, but for a more full-throated and lovely remembrance, check out this article by the great Matt Zoller Seitz.Disclaimer: we had some unfortunate tech issues at the top of the show, resulting in some worse than normal audio. Alonso Duralde, of our sister Max Fun podcast Maximum Film and many other projects joins us to discuss something that is, technically, a film, and not a pile of feces. But it's a tough call! In honor of Pride Month and also Alonso's new book Hollywood Pride, our guest pitched us some bad LGBTQ+ themed movies, and (in lieu of trashing some failed films with their hearts in the right place) we decided to critique one of the most retrograde comedies of the 2000s: motherfucking Boat Trip. Episode #425 - The Matrix: Revolutions

We're going into the matrix this week, in honor of Dan and Elliott's contributions to an upcoming episode of the very funny The Novelizers podcast, where comedy writers "novelize" part of a blockbuster movie from the past -- Dan wrote a "chapter" of the original The Matrix (read by our friend John Hodgman!), and he and Elliott appear on the episode playing characters who worked behind the scenes on the movie. Ep. #423 - Argylle

What is the secret to Argylle?!? Is the CAT the spy? Did Taylor Swift write it?!? Is it the obvious twist that Dan guessed after a moment of thought having only seen the trailer?!? In honor of Elliott's long-lost blog critiquing the Oscars, and in honor of the Criterion Channel's recent "Razzie" collection, and in dishonor of the Razzies themselves, Dan guides the intrepid flop team through past winners of America's foremost bad movie awards, and why they're always wrong wrong wrong. We partnered with StagePilot to film our SPEED 2 live show as a streaming event! Yet again, we steal a few hours Jamelle could be using to write something smart for The New York Times, to discuss his REAL passion: movies about hedgehogs. Ep. #420 - Madame Web, with Zhubin Parang

We welcome our old friend Zhubin Parang back to the main feed after years of only joining us for our FlopTales RPG series (available as bonus content for Max Fun members: join here!) -- and for such an auspicious return we had to pick an extra-special movie: Madame Web, which some have hailed as the "Cats" of superhero movies. Does it reach those heights? Who knows. But it's surely the most enjoyably-silly of Sony's Spider-Man without Spider-Man universe. We hope you enjoy it, and thanks to all who support us by becoming a member of Maximum Fun during this Max Fun Drive.Do you live in or around BROOKLYN, NEW YORK or OXFORD, ENGLAND? We’ve got upcoming LIVE SHOWS for you! Ep. #419 - Cat Person, with Hallie Haglund

Stuart was antipodes-bound, for his Australian rambles, when we taped this one, but fear not! In his absence we recruited Hallie Haglund, noted STAR OF THE SHOW to discuss Cat Person with us, and thank god we did, because left to our own devices, we doubt that two dudes would be quite as effective at exploring the dissection of gender w/r/t hetero dating relationships that Cat Person brings to the table (straight from the hit New Yorker short story of the same name). Ep.#405 - The Legend of the Roller Blade Seven

We're having an absolutely legendary Smalltember. First we covered The Legend of the Titanic, and now we're looking into The Legend of the Roller Blade Seven. Apparently they're legendary, but forgive us for being unfamiliar until now. It was made using a system RB7 star/co-writer/producer Scott Shaw dubbed "Zen Filmmaking." According to his wiki, this is a "style of filmmaking where no screenplay and scripts are used in the creation of a movie." We'll see if getting zen delivers a good movie, or whether it's better to... y'know... write things out and plan them ahead of time.If you live in Los Angeles, you can get tix for your choice of TWO live shows at Vidiots on 10/19. Due to the ongoing WGA - SAG/AFTRA strikes, we’re hitting pause on current releases, and focusing on some films 90’s kids will remember. And while we doubt most Smalltember(vember?) movies are union signatories, we decided to keep the train a rollin' anyway and make this a 90s flashback Smalltember! We kick it off with 1999's Italian-Korean-American co-production The Legend of the Titanic -- a bizarre attempt to cash in on James Cameron 1997 mega-blockbuster Titanic, in the form of an animated film featuring a similar star-crossed romance, but with a lot more talking animals.Check out more info about our season of streaming shows, FLOP TV, and buy tickets!Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund here, to support those affected by the WGA strike. The Wikipedia page for The Legend of the TitanicRecommended in this episode:Doctor Death (1989)Blow Out (1981)The Murder of Mr Devil (1970)Rouge (1987)

Ep.#402 - The Net

Due to the ongoing refusal of the AMPTP to negotiate in good faith with the WGA or with our union brothers and sisters in SAG/AFTRA, we've decided to hit pause on discussing more current releases, since (in our own bizarro way) it could promote that work. Instead, we're using this opportunity to go back in time and discuss some silly releases from the past, starting out with some films 90's kids will remember. This week, we're discussing 1995's Sandra Bullock techno-thriller The Net, a movie about the horrors of the internet that seemed prescient and terrifying at the time, and now just seems kind of goofy, considering that the horrors of the internet were way different than those it imagines.Check out more info about our season of streaming shows, FLOP TV, and buy tickets!Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund here, to support those affected by the WGA strike.Wikipedia page for The NetRecommended in this episode:Camera Man, by Dana Stevens (a cultural biography of Buster Keaton)Dressed to Kill (1980)Sing and Like It (1934)Ever tried Microdosing? Ep. #400 - Troll 2

It's a goddamn milestone -- 400 mainline episodes over 16 years of The Flop House! (And that's not counting all of the FH Minis, and the Movie Minutes of yore!) Thus, we took a break from our usual modus operandi of watching less-artistically-successful modern movies, and we treated ourselves with one of the classics of the bad movie canon (so much so that it's the topic of the extremely enjoyable documentary Best Worst Movie). That's right: we're talking about TROLL 2, the film that has absolutely nothing to do with the original Troll other than a title and a fondness for rubber creatures!! It's been memed! It's been giffed! The Flop House Post Election Mood Enhancer - Bratz Commentary

Hi everyone. Was digging through the archives to see if there was anything we could release today, because it seems like maybe people could use a distraction right now.Anyway, found this old recording of the audio from one of our earliest live shows, way back in 2013, where we riffed over the movie Bratz, and decided to make it public (there are MP3s floating around, but we never put it on the main feed). In the past we were worried that you could hear the audio to the movie in the background, for copyright reasons (and also you'll have to sync this pretty well to the movie to hear us without getting a quiet echo). But you know what? It seems unlikely anyone cares, and if we get complaints, we'll take it down. For now, enjoy this surprise, and try to keep from torturing yourself with anxiety. The show was an early one, and riff shows are hard, so this might not be the absolute -best-, but Bratz is on Netflix right now if you wanna put us on and turn off your brain for a while.Be strong. Take care of yourselves.

Our pals John Hodgman and David Rees have an animated show called Dicktown, about an aging boy detective and his aging bully/partner, premiering on FXX's "Cake" on July 9. "Hollywood" Kalan really worked his connections this episode, to bring us the utterly wonderful Felicia Day (of The Guild, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, MST3K: The Return, and much more) to discuss seminal high fantasy, low budget epic "Hawk the Slayer." Meanwhile Dan drops a crazy Pink Panther fact, Elliott launches an insulting guess-by-mail contest, Felicia is intrigued by some fish-eating prowess, and Stuart's in this fantasy discussion like a fuckin' fish in water. Also, we're no longer accepting receipts for the charity raffle, but the whole video livestream show is available for viewing on our YouTube page. How can we follow up heavy-hitting guests like Griffin Newman and Chris Weitz, you may ask? Uh, well how about with JAMELLE BOUIE, New York Times columnist and guy you've definitely seen saying smart things on the news. Why does he like us? Who knows! But he stopped by to discuss Sonic the Hedgehog, about some sort of hedgehog who has definitely never been pregnant on the internet. Ep# 311: Rambo: Last Blood

Guys, we're so excited for our guest this episode. He's a big-time Hollywood gent who's worn many hats -- and to name just a few: he wrote and directed About a Boy. As an actor, he co-starred as "Chuck" in Chuck and Buck. He was one of the producers of The Farewell. The man co-wrote a Star War (Rogue One), for Pete's sake! And, as we never get tired of reminding him, he directed Twilight: New Moon. But up until now, he's been missing one line on his resume -- Flop House guest. I'm sure now he weeps, for he has no worlds left to conquer. Chris Weitz is on this episode! And we're sorry we made him talk about Rambo: Last Blood! Meanwhile the rest of us do some shit. Meanwhile Elliott takes us on a tour through the 4th most popular comics publisher of the 90's, Griffin offers a unified Diesel theory, and Stu and Dan do some bullshit, we're sure, but, honestly, that's really the most important stuff, because those two lovable scamps can talk up a storm! Ep. #308 - Verotika

Please read... bear with us on this one -- this was originally intended to be our Maximum Fun Drive episode, before the world exploded. So it may seem a little choppy in places, where we chopped out some fairly extensive MFD talk* (also there's some minor equipment/audio interference toward the end -- sorry). Thank you to our intrepid editor Jordan Kauwling for going above and beyond. Anyway, even though this would normally not be a full episode week, we thought we'd post it now anyway, to help keep folks' spirits up, and if you're wondering why we don't even mention the GIANT GLOBAL PANDEMIC, it's because we taped it before shit got real. Anyway... OH WHAT AN EPISODE. We're joined by screenwriter and Switchblade Sisters host, April Wolfe, to discuss Wolverine himself, Glenn Danzig's directorial debut, Verotika -- an anthology of "sexy" (?) horror tales. And this time we even managed to give April a working microphone! Brief content warning: because this is an "erotic" horror movie by Danzig, there are some references to violence against women. Honestly, the movie is so incompetent that the awful stuff mostly seems ridiculous in context, but if any reference to that is upsetting, be aware (the episode keeps it to a minimum). * As Jesse notes at the top of the show, the MFD has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although members should have gotten information to access the bonus content for this year, including The Flop House's "lost" episode on the movie Life (the Jake Gyllenhaal one, not the Eddie Murphy one), and a Judge John Hodgman where the learned judge adjudicates whether Elliott can drag Dan's Twitter jokes. If you still want to become a member, you can go to maximumfun.org/join and become a sponsoring member of the community at any time -- during this pandemic we want to take care of yourselves first and foremost, (and probably second and third too). Then if you have anything extra, donate to disaster relief. But if you're fortunate enough to have EXTRA extra, memberships do help keep Max Fun staffers and podcasters salaried, at this time when everyone is struggling, and help keep the network afloat. Enough jabber! We love you all! Please stay safe and healthy, and we're honored to be there with you while we all struggle through this, if only in your headphones. -- Verotika has no Wiki page. More to the point -- since Disney+ has been in the news, we attempt to bask in some reflected glory by talking about the young Kurt Russell Disney live-action vehicle, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (thanks to longtime Daily Show producer and head researcher Adam Chodikoff for the idea).
