The Flop House

The Flop House

By MaximumFun, Dan McCoy, Stuart Wellington, Elliott Kalan

The Flop House is a comedy podcast devoted to the worst in recent film. Your hosts (Elliott Kalan, Dan McCoy, and Stuart Wellington) watch a questionable film, then engage in an unscripted discussion about the movie's shortcomings and occasional delights, while never being afraid of a pointless, silly digression or two hundred.

FH Mini 107 - A Talk with Tom Holland!

No, not Spider-Man. He's a menace! A menace, I say!Instead we got the amazing opportunity to talk with the REAL Tom Holland -- the one 80s kids will remember -- the writer, director, or writer-director of horror movies and thrillers including Child's Play, Fright Night, Thinner, Class of 1984, Cloak & Dagger, Scream For Help, and Psycho II. As three nerds who grew up with this stuff, you can imagine how excited we were to talk to Mr. Holland, and he was just a delight! We hope you enjoy it as much as we all did.

Ep.#428 - Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver

We had to do it. We had to return to that ol' Rebel Moon to see what happened to all our favorite space pals, like... uh... there was the one guy who trained like, a bird dragon? And, um... Lady Sword-haver? And Charlie Hu-- no, wait, he was killed in the first one because he was a traitor. There's definitely a Scargiver in this one, though. That one we're 100% on. Oh Zack Snyder. We wish we could quit you. But like, for serious. We're very tired.Have you subscribed to our new NEWSLETTER, "Flop Secrets?" Ep.#427 - Disclosure, with Meredith Scardino

We were super-excited to welcome Meredith Scardino, the brilliant writer of a billion comedy things, but most recently the creator and showrunner of the hilarious Girls5Eva. If you haven't watched, please ask yourself what you've been doing with your life, then run over to Netflix to correct your error. We'll wait. Once you're done, you'll be all the MORE excited to hear her discuss 1994's Disclosure, a film that (in the words of Dan's Letterboxd) "Begins as a dumb and offensive sexual harassment thriller, then wisely pivots into an offensively dumb techno-thriller." But what do the other Peaches think? Listen and find out! Also, this episode is about a film featuring the iconic Donald Sutherland, who was still with us at the time of this recording, but who died just recently at the age of 88. We had nothing but good things to say about Mr. Sutherland, even in this silly movie, but for a more full-throated and lovely remembrance, check out this article by the great Matt Zoller Seitz.Disclaimer: we had some unfortunate tech issues at the top of the show, resulting in some worse than normal audio. DO NOT FRET — it clears up around minute 12, and producer Alex made it listenable, if not up to our usual standard. We’ve gotten some new equipment that will prevent similar issues in the future.Wikipedia page for DisclosureIn-person tickets for our July 26th Boston show are SOLD OUT, but WBUR City Space is set up to livestream shows, and they're offering inexpensive tickets to watch the show LIVE online! Ep.#426 - Boat Trip, with Alonso Duralde

Alonso Duralde, of our sister Max Fun podcast Maximum Film and many other projects joins us to discuss something that is, technically, a film, and not a pile of feces. But it's a tough call! In honor of Pride Month and also Alonso's new book Hollywood Pride, our guest pitched us some bad LGBTQ+ themed movies, and (in lieu of trashing some failed films with their hearts in the right place) we decided to critique one of the most retrograde comedies of the 2000s: motherfucking Boat Trip. Did we regret this decision? The Flop House on The Novelizers

The Novelizers is a podcast that takes a beloved film, gives each scene to a TV comedy writer to novelize, and then gives those scenes to a comedian or actor to narrate. Plus interviews with the people who (may or may not have) made the original film. This episode has a chapter WRITTEN BY DAN MCCOY and READ BY JOHN HODGMAN! It also features an improvised interview with some people who "worked on the Matrix" (actually ELLIOTT KALAN and DAN MCCOY PLAYING SILLY CHARACTERS!) It's a must-listen podcast CROSSOVER EVENT! Check out their other episodes!

Episode #425 - The Matrix: Revolutions

We're going into the matrix this week, in honor of Dan and Elliott's contributions to an upcoming episode of the very funny The Novelizers podcast, where comedy writers "novelize" part of a blockbuster movie from the past -- Dan wrote a "chapter" of the original The Matrix (read by our friend John Hodgman!), and he and Elliott appear on the episode playing characters who worked behind the scenes on the movie. Look for that soon, but in the meantime, enjoy this flashback discussion of The Matrix: Revolutions, our fourth-favorite Matrix movie.See us LIVE in July in Boston!Wikipedia page for The Matrix: RevolutionsRecommended in this episode:Hundreds of Beavers (2022)I Saw the TV Glow (2024)Regrouping (1976)Head to factormeals.com/flop50 and use code flop50 to get 50% off your first box plus 20% off your next month.

Ep. #423 - Argylle

What is the secret to Argylle?!? Is the CAT the spy? Did Taylor Swift write it?!? Is it the obvious twist that Dan guessed after a moment of thought having only seen the trailer?!? Is it that it doesn't work at all as a movie, but at least it's not as relentlessly boring as a lot of Flop House topics?!? It's definitely at least two of those things!Tonight is our SPEED 2 live show, and tickets are still available! All 3 of us will be IN THE CHAT, watching along, tonight! We welcome our old friend Zhubin Parang back to the main feed after years of only joining us for our FlopTales RPG series (available as bonus content for Max Fun members: join here!) -- and for such an auspicious return we had to pick an extra-special movie: Madame Web, which some have hailed as the "Cats" of superhero movies. Stuart was antipodes-bound, for his Australian rambles, when we taped this one, but fear not! In his absence we recruited Hallie Haglund, noted STAR OF THE SHOW to discuss Cat Person with us, and thank god we did, because left to our own devices, we doubt that two dudes would be quite as effective at exploring the dissection of gender w/r/t hetero dating relationships that Cat Person brings to the table (straight from the hit New Yorker short story of the same name). Ep.#405 - The Legend of the Roller Blade Seven

We're having an absolutely legendary Smalltember. First we covered The Legend of the Titanic, and now we're looking into The Legend of the Roller Blade Seven. Apparently they're legendary, but forgive us for being unfamiliar until now. It was made using a system RB7 star/co-writer/producer Scott Shaw dubbed "Zen Filmmaking." According to his wiki, this is a "style of filmmaking where no screenplay and scripts are used in the creation of a movie." We'll see if getting zen delivers a good movie, or whether it's better to... y'know... write things out and plan them ahead of time.If you live in Los Angeles, you can get tix for your choice of TWO live shows at Vidiots on 10/19. And if you prefer watching us from the comfort of home, check out more info about our season of streaming shows, FLOP TV!Due to the ongoing WGA – SAG/AFTRA strikes, we’re hitting pause on current releases, and focusing on some films 90’s kids might remember. Ep.#404 - The Legend of the Titanic

Due to the ongoing WGA - SAG/AFTRA strikes, we’re hitting pause on current releases, and focusing on some films 90’s kids will remember. And while we doubt most Smalltember(vember?) movies are union signatories, we decided to keep the train a rollin' anyway and make this a 90s flashback Smalltember! We kick it off with 1999's Italian-Korean-American co-production The Legend of the Titanic -- a bizarre attempt to cash in on James Cameron 1997 mega-blockbuster Titanic, in the form of an animated film featuring a similar star-crossed romance, but with a lot more talking animals.Check out more info about our season of streaming shows, FLOP TV, and buy tickets!Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund here, to support those affected by the WGA strike. The Wikipedia page for The Legend of the TitanicRecommended in this episode:Doctor Death (1989)Blow Out (1981)The Murder of Mr Devil (1970)Rouge (1987)

Ep.#403 - Wild Wild West

Due to the ongoing refusal of the AMPTP to negotiate in good faith with the WGA or with our union brothers and sisters in SAG/AFTRA, we’re hitting pause on discussing current releases, and focusing on some films 90’s kids will remember. This week, we talk Wild Wild West (the 1999 movie version of the 60's sci-fi western TV show) a blockbuster mega-bomb that nearly ended multiple careers!Check out more info about our season of streaming shows, FLOP TV, and buy tickets!Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund here, to support those affected by the WGA strike. The wiki-wild Wikipedia page for wiki-Wild Wild WestRecommended in this episode:Caché (2005)How To Blow Up A Pipeline (2022)Marjoe (1972)

Ep.#402 - The Net

Due to the ongoing refusal of the AMPTP to negotiate in good faith with the WGA or with our union brothers and sisters in SAG/AFTRA, we've decided to hit pause on discussing more current releases, since (in our own bizarro way) it could promote that work. Instead, we're using this opportunity to go back in time and discuss some silly releases from the past, starting out with some films 90's kids will remember. This week, we're discussing 1995's Sandra Bullock techno-thriller The Net, a movie about the horrors of the internet that seemed prescient and terrifying at the time, and now just seems kind of goofy, considering that the horrors of the internet were way different than those it imagines.Check out more info about our season of streaming shows, FLOP TV, and buy tickets!Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund here, to support those affected by the WGA strike.Wikipedia page for The NetRecommended in this episode:Camera Man, by Dana Stevens (a cultural biography of Buster Keaton)Dressed to Kill (1980)Sing and Like It (1934)Ever tried Microdosing? Ep. #400 - Troll 2

It's a goddamn milestone -- 400 mainline episodes over 16 years of The Flop House! (And that's not counting all of the FH Minis, and the Movie Minutes of yore!) Thus, we took a break from our usual modus operandi of watching less-artistically-successful modern movies, and we treated ourselves with one of the classics of the bad movie canon (so much so that it's the topic of the extremely enjoyable documentary Best Worst Movie). That's right: we're talking about TROLL 2, the film that has absolutely nothing to do with the original Troll other than a title and a fondness for rubber creatures!! It's been memed! Episode #388 - Don't Worry Darling

Booksmart was one of Dan's favorite movies of its year. Director Olivia Wilde's big-budget follow-up, Don't Worry Darling... has problems. Dan, Stu, and Elliott chat about them, while mostly ignoring the extra-textural hubbub around the movie. Mostly. Don't worry, darlings. Or do. Ep. #387 - Black Adam

We start the new year off with a BIG movie, especially according to its star, Mr. Dwayne Mr. "The Rock" E. Normous Johnson. It's Black Adam, a superhero probably even fewer of you have heard of than Shazam (nee Captain Marvel), in whose pages B. Adam first appeared. He's not your daddy's superhero, in that he kills a bunch of people, but he probably is your daddy's (or granddaddy's) superhero in the sense that he's from 1945. Anyway, they made a long, boring movie about him, so we talk about it.ALSO: It's time to VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE SEXY XENOMORPH MUSIC VIDEO! Hope you're ready for a "mini" that's as long as one of our regular episodes! With the new year just beginning, Dan, Stuart, and Elliott look back and discuss their top movies of 2022 (with the caveat that none of us has the time to see everything in the "best of '22 conversation), and also branch out to some other highlights and lowlights of the year in film.

Mr. Christmas himself, Alonso Duralde, of many other podcasts, returns to dissect the third, and most narratively sweaty, of the Santa Clause trilogy, "The Escape Clause." Stick an Academy Award-nominated director with three of the most acclaimed actors currently working and an absolutely berzerk cavalcade of supporting stars and the resulting movie's gotta be fantastic, right? Anyway, this ain't your daddy's Marmaduke, provided you have a very young daddy (in the case of the previous film) or a very old daddy (who loves the comic). We're joined by Erik Marcisak, the man who holds a hallowed place in Flop House history, as the man who introduced Dan and Elliott to one another. We reminisce with Erik about the old days, doing shows in his tiny comedy theater; then we segue into a discussion of Nukie, one of the bad movies that bonded him with Elliott; and wrap up with Erik subtly hijacking the show to interview us for a little bit.

Ep. #332 - Primal

Cagemas comes but once a year! Unless, since this one is a little late, it will technically come twice this year, and none times last year. It's confusing. It's annual is what we're saying. We celebrate the work of Saint Nicolas Cage this time with a discussion of the snakes-on-a-boat-and-also-other-animals thriller Primal. And for an august occasion like this one, you need a special guest! So this episode we welcome hilarious sweetheart Josh Gondelman of Desus & Mero and his book Nice Try.

Ep. #331 - Six Weeks, with Alonso Duralde

We've been wanting to get Alonso Duralde on the show for a while -- not only because he's the senior film critic for The Wrap, and not only because he's the host or co-host of a number of podcasts, including Max Fun's own Who Shot Ya?, but because he literally wrote the book on Christmas movies. So, of course, this holiday season he picked a movie that barely sort of has Christmas stuff in it -- the double-Moore weepie Six Weeks. THANKS FOR NOTHING, BUDDY! Ep. #330 - Freaky, with Barbara Crampton

We break out of our normal format a bit for this BONUS EPISODE! How so? Well, #1, we watched a movie that we were all pretty sure we'd like (and, spoiler alert, we did) -- the body-swap horror-comedy "Freaky," and #2, instead of doing letters and recommendations, we take a bit of extra time to talk to our guest about her long career. Who is that guest? The wonderful Barbara Crampton, star of legendary horror movies Re-Animator, From Beyond, You're Next, and a little movie that doesn't get mentioned on our show a lot -- Castle Freak. And folks? Barbara is just an absolute ray of sunshine who was a delight to talk to (off-mic as well -- she spent a bunch of time just chatting with us and inquiring about our health and well-being). We hope you enjoy this as much as we did.Wikipedia synopsis of Freaky.

Well, we ask our guest, the hilarious absolute sweetheart, Justin McElroy, that very question -- you may know him as one of the hosts of Max Fun's own My Brother My Brother and Me, The Adventure Zone, Sawbones, and many other podcasts you should probably be listening to instead of our nonsense. And so we arrive at November, so named because it has no special theme. And, folks, we'll admit... this MIB: International episode is a weird one. Why? Well, finding out is part of the fun. But our guest for this show is Annabelle Gurwitch, from Max Fun's new Tiny Victories podcast, as well as TBS's Dinner and a Movie, countless acting roles, and quite a few books. The Flop House Post Election Mood Enhancer - Bratz Commentary

Hi everyone. Was digging through the archives to see if there was anything we could release today, because it seems like maybe people could use a distraction right now.Anyway, found this old recording of the audio from one of our earliest live shows, way back in 2013, where we riffed over the movie Bratz, and decided to make it public (there are MP3s floating around, but we never put it on the main feed). In the past we were worried that you could hear the audio to the movie in the background, for copyright reasons (and also you'll have to sync this pretty well to the movie to hear us without getting a quiet echo). But you know what? It seems unlikely anyone cares, and if we get complaints, we'll take it down. For now, enjoy this surprise, and try to keep from torturing yourself with anxiety. The show was an early one, and riff shows are hard, so this might not be the absolute -best-, but Bratz is on Netflix right now if you wanna put us on and turn off your brain for a while.Be strong. Take care of yourselves.

FH Mini 17 - The Monster Mash

2020 may be miserable, but it's STILL HALLOWEEN DAMN IT. So we assembled a crack team of the Flop House gang, plus comedy writers Mike Reiss and Ken Keeler (who, between them, are responsible for much of the greatness of The Simpsons, The Critic, and Futurama) to discuss the most important and timely issue possible -- the 1962 novelty hit, The Monster Mash. Also, if you're reading this on the day of release, 10/31, you still have until midnight to donate to charity and be entered in our raffle to win exclusive Flop House merch! Ep. #326 - Uninvited, with Gillian Flynn

Our guest this week is Gillian Flynn, bestselling author of Gone Girl, Sharp Objects, and Dark Places, showrunner for Amazon's Utopia, screenwriter of Widows and adaptations of her own work, winner of the Edgar Award, and BAFTA nominee. We have no idea why she agreed to do this either. But we're happy she did, because for our second and final SHOCKTOBER 2020 movie, our horror-aficionado guest picked Uninvited, and it was amazing! (to be clear, this is not THE Uninvited from 2009, which The Flop House already covered, or, for that matter, The Uninvited from 1944, about ghosts and Ray Milland. This is the 1987 direct-to-video one about the mutant killer house cat). Also! Ep. #323 - Deadly Lessons

If there's one thing we've learned in all our years of discussing bad movies, it's that vanity projects are often the creme de la creme of bizarre and terrible cinema. And hoo doggies, do we have something special for you. Made in 2006, then shelved for nearly a decade before getting quietly dumped to streaming in 2014, writer/director/star Stuart Paul's magnum opus, Deadly Lessons, is a fantasy self-help (?) thriller (?) that's impossible to describe, but lord, do we try.Movies recommended in this episode:Charlie's Angels (2019)Palm SpringsThe Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey

Ep. #308 - Verotika

Please read... bear with us on this one -- this was originally intended to be our Maximum Fun Drive episode, before the world exploded. So it may seem a little choppy in places, where we chopped out some fairly extensive MFD talk* (also there's some minor equipment/audio interference toward the end -- sorry). Thank you to our intrepid editor Jordan Kauwling for going above and beyond. Anyway, even though this would normally not be a full episode week, we thought we'd post it now anyway, to help keep folks' spirits up, and if you're wondering why we don't even mention the GIANT GLOBAL PANDEMIC, it's because we taped it before shit got real. Anyway... OH WHAT AN EPISODE. We're joined by screenwriter and Switchblade Sisters host, April Wolfe, to discuss Wolverine himself, Glenn Danzig's directorial debut, Verotika -- an anthology of "sexy" (?) horror tales. And this time we even managed to give April a working microphone! Brief content warning: because this is an "erotic" horror movie by Danzig, there are some references to violence against women. Honestly, the movie is so incompetent that the awful stuff mostly seems ridiculous in context, but if any reference to that is upsetting, be aware (the episode keeps it to a minimum). * As Jesse notes at the top of the show, the MFD has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although members should have gotten information to access the bonus content for this year, including The Flop House's "lost" episode on the movie Life (the Jake Gyllenhaal one, not the Eddie Murphy one), and a Judge John Hodgman where the learned judge adjudicates whether Elliott can drag Dan's Twitter jokes. If you still want to become a member, you can go to maximumfun.org/join and become a sponsoring member of the community at any time -- during this pandemic we want to take care of yourselves first and foremost, (and probably second and third too). Then if you have anything extra, donate to disaster relief. But if you're fortunate enough to have EXTRA extra, memberships do help keep Max Fun staffers and podcasters salaried, at this time when everyone is struggling, and help keep the network afloat. Enough jabber! We love you all! Please stay safe and healthy, and we're honored to be there with you while we all struggle through this, if only in your headphones. -- Verotika has no Wiki page. Ep. #301 - Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

We kick off the New Year (and the next 300 episodes?) by discussing a movie that no one has ANY strong feelings about -- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. One programming note: we sort of threw together this episode at the last moment because Elliott was visiting New York, so we skip the usual letters and recommendation segments. Don't worry, though -- we still manage to talk for 100 minutes. Because it's Star Wars. Wikipedia synopsis of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Ep. #300 - The Wicker Man

Well, we made it to three hundred, guys. And it only took us 12 years. What a triumph of the human spirit. Or monument to three lives sorely misused. One of those two things. But hey! It's Cagemas, when we celebrate the work of Saint Nicolas Cage! And Hallie's here! And we're talking about The Wicker Man! That's a 300th birthday to be proud of Meanwhile Elliott and Stu really love pronouncing "raspberries," Dan wonders how long you can hold bullets, and Hallie isn't gonna let motherhood tank her Flop House Q rating. Ep. #299 - The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes

We attempt to exploit the zeitgeist by... reviewing a movie from 1969. We may not be good at this zeitgeist thing. More to the point -- since Disney+ has been in the news, we attempt to bask in some reflected glory by talking about the young Kurt Russell Disney live-action vehicle, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (thanks to longtime Daily Show producer and head researcher Adam Chodikoff for the idea). Meanwhile Stu makes the fatal error of encouraging Elliott's singing, Elliott takes us inside the pitch meetings for our favorite cereal mascots, and Dan has the plague.
