Brentford 3 Liverpool 3: The Anfield Wrap

The Anfield Wrap free podcast looking back over Brentford 3 Liverpool 3 in the Premier League at the Brentford Community Stadium. Neil Atkinson hosts John Gibbons, Rob Gutmann and Mike Kearney... Brentford 3 Liverpool 3... a) A missed opportunity. b) A crazy game. c) Emotions seemed to play a massive part to me; Liverpool got swept along repeatedly. Embracing chaos may sometimes be good but not in that one. d) The equaliser at 3-3 felt a bridge too far. None of the back six play well... a) And they have been playing very well. Defensive line a clear problem. b) Credit to Brentford and especially Toney/Mbuemo whose movement was excellent. c) Liverpool aren't good at the bits. Brentford centre mid three very compact. d) Brentford get encouragement early, just as it looks like Liverpool will be putting the hammer down. e) Encouragement is a thing. Every single time it feels like Liverpool have the game where they want it, they give Brentford a reason to believe. f) e.g. the save from Diogo Jota. The chances Liverpool have... a) And chances to find chances. b) Scoring three away from home should be enough. c) However I understand needing to get two clear. The Mo Salah and Sadio Mane double chance. d) Again, encouragement. The sub... a) He makes it because he was making it. b) Leads to our best period of the game. But... c) He can make two more and had a really good bench. d) Mad game to come into, I grant you. The state of play... a) Manchester United and Chelsea also dropping points. b) All roads to next weekend. Porto then... a) Manchester City on the horizon. Changes to be made? b) Porto deserved to beat Atletico away if anyone deserved to win that game. Not mugs. FA Cup Final 2001 - Moments In Time: From The Vault

The Anfield Wrap brings you eyewitness accounts of the 2001 FA Cup final between Liverpool and Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. This is the third in our series of free audio documentaries in which we travel back in time to tell the story of significant days in the history of Liverpool FC, by tracking down the people who made them happen. This latest game we look back on is one which is often attributed to one man’s efforts alone, though there were plenty of ups and downs along the way under the beaming hot sun in South Wales. Telling the story of that day are former Liverpool FC players Sander Westerveld, Stephane Henchoz, Jamie Carragher, Emile Heskey, Gary McAllister, Patrik Berger and (of course) Michael Owen; and the assistant manager at the time, Phil Thompson. We also speak to the referee on the day, Steve Dunn; journalists Chris Bascombe, Oliver Kay, Amy Lawrence and Clive Tyldesley; and supporters Gareth Roberts, Kevin Walsh and Dan Morgan. 'The programme will also involve the creation of a new coaching academy, which will inspire participants to play and coach sports, creating opportunities for a lifelong pathway. The academy will also have a specific focus on recruiting from marginalised communities to help remove any barriers to sport that may exist. 'LFC Foundation will mentor the coaches and provide them with work experience and training opportunities across Liverpool Football Club and through local grassroots clubs.'

The Anfield Wrap, alongside Nike, have worked with Earl Jenkins and Kingsley United, Merseyside’s most diverse footy team to create a Kingsley United girls’ team, a BAME [Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic] youth leadership forum in partnership with other organisations in the city, and a bursary scheme for a BAME coaching course. Kingsley United came about after a merge with Tiber FC where the two clubs realised that would be stronger together. A new astroturf on Lodge Lane is one of the many signs the club is being revitalised. Kingsley Road is now a symbol of what unites the community through football.  Earl Jenkins describes his coaches as mentors “first and foremost.” He goes on to say “in some respects, some of our coaches become that role model or father figure for the kids in the team. And if you look at any of our training sessions, you can see a real sense of community and family as well.” Find out more about our partnership with Kingsley United and more here. Also on the show, John Gibbons speaks to Earl Jenkins the chair of Kingsley United, and Josh is joined by Joseph Symes from the It's A Funny Old Life podcast.

Liverpool 2 Southampton 0: The Anfield Wrap

For our free podcast looking at Liverpool 2 Southampton 0, Neil Atkinson hosts Rob Gutmann, Chloe Bloxam and Goal.com's Neil Jones... Here's what Jonesy had to say in his post-match column: "Leicester beware. Liverpool are still fighting. Despite everything, despite the knocks and the setbacks and the injuries, the Reds are still there. Somehow. The race for Champions League qualification goes on. Jurgen Klopp’s side simply had to win here and they did, Sadio Mane’s header and Thiago Alcantara’s first goal in English football giving them a battling 2-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday evening. With Leicester surprisingly beaten at home by Newcastle 24 hours previously, it means Liverpool have closed to within six points of the fourth-placed Foxes with a game in hand. And Leicester’s final three fixtures, in case you had forgotten, are away to Manchester United, away to Chelsea and at home to Tottenham. Ouch. Liverpool will surely, at the very least, need to win all four of their remaining games, starting at Old Trafford on Thursday. They have not won there under Klopp, of course, but this would be an ideal time to alter that. They need to get to 69 points, by hook or by crook. It is the only chance they have." European Super League Reaction With Rory Smith

Neil Atkinson is joined by The New York Times' Rory Smith to talk about the European Super League, what it means for Liverpool and the rest of football... Rory wrote on Twitter: "I don't think it is necessarily true that national leagues are the natural conclusion of football, or that the Champions League (as it stands, or as it is about to be) is somehow perfect and unyielding. I think it's important football has space to change and, ideally, improve." "But even to someone not unilaterally opposed to the idea, this one falls down in two ways. One is the permanence: not because it doesn't protect the pyramid - the current status quo doesn't protect the pyramid either, nobody on either side actually gives a shit about the pyramid." "But because the 'pyramid', here, basically represents the pretty basic sporting principle that attainment is a direct result of effort. You have to earn your spot, every year. The permanence of the 15 founders in a super league contradicts that." The Weekender: A Big Liverpool Book Special

Neil Atkinson speaks to several writers, from the Merseyside patch and beyond, about books on Liverpool, Everton and more that have been released recently. Featuring Melissa Reddy on her book 'Believe Us', Simon Hughes on The Athletic's 'At The End Of The Storm', the Magic Spongers on 'From The Jaws Of Victory', David Prentice on 'A Grand Old Team To Report' and Dan Gray on 'Extra Time'. Believe Us: How Jürgen Klopp Transformed Liverpool Into Title Winners Journalist Melissa Reddy reveals the inside story of Jürgen Klopp’s astonishing revival of Liverpool, culminating in the club’s first domestic league trophy in 30 years. Featuring incisive and insightful reporting, and the thoughts of players, management and club hierarchy, 'Believe Us' paints a vivid picture of this titanic sporting success. Reddy’s unparalleled access to the club brings interviews with everyone from fans and key backroom staff to players including talismanic captain Jordan Henderson, and of course Klopp himself. At The End Of The Storm - Stories From Liverpool's Historic Title Win This is the story of Liverpool's title win in the longest season, as told by the writers of The Athletic, with their blend of inside access and expert analysis; great ideas and beautiful writing. Articles include profiles of each of Liverpool's title winners by their former youth team coaches; Oliver Kay watches Sadio Mane score against Manchester City in the company of the striker's family, in his hometown in Senegal; James Pearce spends 90 minutes analysing Virgil van Dijk; plus there are exclusive interviews with Jürgen Klopp, and the club's US owners. Read the stories behind a unique and historical season from a team of writers every bit as good as the footballers they were following. From The Jaws Of Victory: A History Of Football's Nearly Men Through the eyes of the UK's finest sports writers, 'From the Jaws of Victory' pays homage to club and international sides who captivated, inspired and astounded in equal measure, only to fall short of football’s biggest prizes. The destination of these stories may be the same, but the journeys are equally glorious. The three best teams never to have won the World Cup can be found here - Hungary’s Golden Squad of 1954, the Netherlands’ Total Football exponents of 1974 and Brazil’s celebrated 1982 vintage - along with brilliant club sides through the ages, from Bolton Wanderers, humbled in the Matthews final of 1953, to Liverpool, devastated as the Premier League slipped from their grasp in 2014. This comprehensive history ensures that though these teams might not have their names on the trophies, their influence on the game remains undimmed. A Grand Old Team To Report: 45 Years Of Following Everton Football David Prentice is the Sport Editor of the Liverpool Echo, the city's famous newspaper. His fascinating book charts almost half-a-century of Everton Football Club's history - from a unique insider. It is a fan-fare and a news report. A travelogue and a social comment - and a poignant reflection of how football and journalism has changed forever. Extra Time: 50 Further Delights of Modern Football Despite its flaws and excesses, modern football is still sprinkled with simple yet beguiling delights. In his previous book Saturday, 3pm, Daniel Gray captured many of them. Now he is back with a further 50 short essays of prose poetry dedicated to the game's charming, technicolour minutiae. From club lottos to undeserved wins, and from pitch-invading animals to the roar after a minute's silence, Extra Time is another romantic celebration of football fandom and its shared joys, habits, eccentricities and peculiarities. It is a salute to keepers going forward for corners, match balls landing on stand roofs and goals scored in quick succession. These chapters offer a gleeful antidote to disillusionment with modern football, VAR and all. They are reminders of why we care and justifications for our devotion. Each warmly evokes this sport's blessed capacity to offer escape and diversion. Let us share the delight once more. Liverpool FC Women 0 Man City Women 3: The Post-Match Show

Neil Atkinson is joined by Emma Sanders and John Gibbons to react to Liverpool Women's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City Women at Prenton Park. After being put under a lot of early pressure from Man City, Liverpool were defending well but were struggling to take control of the ball. Man City then took the lead after an outstanding goal from Laura Coombs, though Liverpool will have felt slightly unlucky to have been behind after putting in a solid defensive shift for the best part of the first half. Man City then doubled their lead after a pass from former Liverpool player Lucy Bronze found Rose Lavelle unmarked in the box and the American fired home with ease. Man City rounded off their win over Liverpool with a third goal in injury time as Jess Park scored at the back post. Despite defeat, there were lots of positives for Liverpool to take from the game against a well-drilled Man City side. The focus now turns to Sheffield United Women’s visit to Prenton Park this Sunday. (Report with thanks to Caoimhe O'Neill @CaoimheSport and @LiverpoolFCW on Twitter.)

Also on the show, Paul Riley from Transition Liverpool talks to John Gibbons about the new project they're looking to launch next summer called 'sPark It Liverpool', and author Dave O'Brien speaks to Neil Atkinson about the book he has co-written called 'Culture is Bad for You: Inequality in the Cultural and Creative Industries'. sPark It Liverpool Inspired by Park(ing) Day - an event that has fired the imagination all over the globe - 'sPark It Liverpool' is taking over the streets of our city, celebrating imagination, fostering collaboration, and starting a conversation about what we want from our urban landscape. Launching next summer, 'sPark It Liverpool' will allow community organisations and independent businesses to create pop-up installations in on-street parking bays in order to engage, inspire and entertain the people of our city. The project aims to: Provide a platform for community groups, independent businesses and creatives Excite, inspire and challenge through inspired reinterpretations of land use in urban areas Build stronger community networks, provide opportunities for training, employment and volunteering Click here for more information on the project or to make a pledge towards the development. If you want to keep up to date with the latest you can follow Transition Liverpool on Twitter, Facebook or visit their website... Culture is Bad for You: Inequality in the Cultural and Creative Industries Culture will keep you fit and healthy. Culture will bring communities together. Culture will improve your education. This is the message from governments and arts organisations across the country; however, this book explains why we need to be cautious about culture. Offering a powerful call to transform the cultural and creative industries, 'Culture is Bad for You' examines the intersections between race, class, and gender in the mechanisms of exclusion in cultural occupations. Exclusion from culture begins at an early age, the authors argue, and despite claims by cultural institutions and businesses to hire talented and hardworking individuals, women, people of colour, and those from working class backgrounds are systematically disbarred. While the inequalities that characterise both workforce and audience remain unaddressed, the positive contribution culture makes to society can never be fully realised. You can purchase your copy of 'Culture is Bad for You: Inequality in the Cultural and Creative Industries' from Amazon, and follow the author Dave O'Brien on Twitter...

These are uncertain times for so many people, and we get that. “We’re trying to pursue a ‘both/and’ approach – to find out how we can support our literal neighbours, whilst also thinking of those further away who need our help more than ever. I work with both organisations, I have been in contact with them throughout the COVID pandemic, they’re doing amazing work supporting vulnerable people, but it’s really hard right now. “I recorded this song after a conversation with my dear friend Jason Sudeikis, as I’ve been scoring his unreleased television show, Ted Lasso. It may still end up in the show, but we’ve had it up our sleeve for a couple of months. For lots of reasons we wanted it just to be out in the world sooner rather than later, so here it is, with love.”
