For Sarah Black-Smith it was natural to follow in her engineering dad&aposs footsteps and she worked hard to forge herself a career in manufacturing (although the dream to be an F1 Mechanical Engineer will never die). Despite having a male role model at home, the representation of women throughout Sarah&aposs education was woefully lacking - just five of the 150 cohort identified as women. It was here that she realised just how critical it is to have more female role models in the industry. Now, as General Manager for the Motion Control function at Siemens, Sarah credits a lot of her success to her mentors, both men and women, whom she says without their encouragement she would never be where she is today.  Listen to learn: ⚡The men and women who inspire Sarah⚡Sarah&aposs journey from GCSE to where she is now ⚡How you can become an advocate for females in the manufacturing industry⚡️How Siemens are making changes to become more inclusive Sign up to our Power Platform to check out our events calendar here. How to use creativity as a tool for disability equality in the Arts

In January 2018, Blue Monday to be precise, something happened to Melissa Johns that made getting through the day even harder than for most. Naked photos, hacked from her iPhone, were leaked to national newspapers across the UK. What was most striking in the reports for Melissa, who was born without her right arm below the elbow, was the way her body was negatively depicted. Even more significantly, it wasn’t the first time she’d experienced it but it was the last time she’d let it define her, and has since written and toured the UK with her one-woman show, Snatched. Outside of acting, Melissa uses her platform to advocate for disabled artists and works as Co-Creative Lead for Bafta Award-winning organisation, TripleC (co-founded with Cherylee Houston) - a collective of disabled and non-disabled creative individuals which runs projects breaking down the barriers for people with disabilities in the arts. Listen to learn: How drama positively impacts disabled youth What TripleC does to further the opportunities of disabled artists How Melissa turned what could have been a devastating experience into one of hope and change What you can expect from Melissa’s new stage show, Snatched.  ⚡Find Melissa here: https://www.bafta.org/supporting-talent/elevate/melissa-johns  ⚡Learn more about TripleC here: https://triplec.org.uk/  ⚡Listen to Cherylee Houston’s podcast episode here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-work-better-together/id1250023032?i=1000550260034  💡Keep up to date on the latest news from Northern Power Women: Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram & Facebook  💡Sign up to the Northern Power Women newsletter.  ❗Do you work in HR, or ED&I? They also ask; should men only member clubs be resigned to history, or do men have the right to have spaces reserved just for them? As the news reports on the Prime Minister of New Zealand’s childcare arrangements, should discussions about family life be removed from politics altogether, or encouraged? Nearly six months since lockdown started, Sam and Simone talk about the return to “normal” for many people. Commuting, school and office-based work.  Is this what life is looking like for you? Or are you still working from home, furloughed or perhaps out of work?  Please let us know, do send us an email or tweet. We’re at another crossroads

As summer holidays (whatever they looked like this year!) come to end, as children go back to school, there’s some big decisions to be made for a lot of companies, small and large and individuals too, about where you are going to work. This week, Simone and Sam discuss a major report that identifies 50 of the biggest companies in the UK who will not be sending their staff back to the office. Would that work for your company? Or you as an individual? Are you desperate to get back to “normality” or would that be impossible right now? We’d love to hear from you. And could another casualty of the pandemic be friendship? Sam looks at a report that suggests even our closest bonds can be fragile under pressure. Simone also poses the question: who have you become during the covid lockdown? The answer may horrify you! Who’s checking in on you?

This week, Simone and Sam reflect on the fact that so many of us are still at boiling point as we try to manage homes, work, children and ourselves, often with very limited resources and they ask -who is checking in on you?  How can we start to re-draw boundaries between work and home life when they have been so blurred over the last six months? We’d love to hear your thoughts! Do get in touch! We celebrate the first woman of colour to run on a VP ticket in the USA, Kamala Harris but reflect on the rampant misogyny that has once again revealed itself, both here and in the States and discuss the perpetual issue of the wolf whistle! As many companies move towards asking their workforce to return to the office, Simone and Sam ask questions about whether presenteeism is necessary for a successful business?  Does reducing flexibility signal a return to negative work practices that will undoubtedly adversely affect women more than men and will the next generation of employees accept this anachronistic way of working?
