Fingers On Buzzers

Fingers On Buzzers

By Fingers On Buzzers

Fingers on Buzzers is brought to you by comedian and keen amateur quizzer Lucy Porter, alongside The Chase's very own Jenny Ryan.

Whether you’re a Pointless armchair aficionado, nostalgic for the days of Going for Gold, or a bona fide Mastermind, this is the podcast for you.

Jenny and Lucy speak to a host of people who work behind the scenes of our favourite TV quiz shows, including James Harkin (QI), Roger Tilling (the ‘Voice’ of University Challenge) and Jenny Hawker (Only Connect); plus we hear from epic winners and losers of quiz shows past and present, from Bullseye and Blockbusters to Britain's Brightest Family and everything in between.

Lucy and Jenny will also discuss the BIG issues including the etiquette of pub quizzing, new quizzing technology and how questions have changed with the times.

All the BIG questions will be asked (and answered.) What IS the difference between quiz shows and game shows? With the help of experts and enthusiasts alike, Jenny and Lucy get to the bottom of that and much, much more besides.

There's also plenty of opportunities to play-along, as week-by-week Jenny coaches plucky layperson Lucy on the ‘quiz syllabus’, and in-turn Lucy tests the mettle of general knowledge guru Jenny with a weekly pop-quiz.

Whether you're an Only Connect know-it-all, still dine-out on your Fifteen To One appearance from 1993, or only indulge in Trivial Pursuits on December 25th, this podcast is for you.

In act one of a fantastic night at The Museum of Comedy, our hosts quizzed and quipped in this very lively episode, where our star guest makes a brief appearance ahead of his big moment, which you'll be able to hear in our Festive special, next week! But for now, enjoy some classic facts about celebrity solids and the fan museum! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Kids Can Do It Too

After the announcement of Junior Taskmaster, our Lucy and Jen got all nostalgic for their childhood quiz shows and so, decided to revisit them, as well as some from waaaay before either of their times. So, IS Jen smarter than a 12-year-old from 1963? Have a listen to find out, and you'll also get to hear which quiz shows probably shouldn't be adapted for kids to play... ooohhh I crush a grape! The Forgotten Women of Quiz

With diversity still severely lacking in all areas of quizzing, Jenny and Lucy look at the ways women could (and should) be more visible and at the trickledown effect of having so few women hosting TV quiz shows. What does the lack of questions about women, ethnic minorities and marginalized groups say to the world about who is allowed in the inner circle? Thank goodness our hosts are here to quiz each other senseless all about women - someone give them their own quiz show please, it's about time...BUY THE FOB BOOK HERE!Fingers on Buzzers: From Bullseye... by Ryan, Jenny (amazon.co.uk) Hosted on Acast. 107 Slapstick Quizzing, with Robin Ince

It's finally happened! After several attempts, diaries finally aligned with the stars and Lucy and Jenny could welcome the delightful Robin Ince to the show... Well, almost aligned, as it turned out that Jenny had to dash off for a secret TV gig during Robin's visit, but for a short time, we were able to have all three in the same room. Robin, as you can imagine, has infinite stories about quizzing on and off TV, and tells us why a quiz experience from his youth made him resist Mastermind for so many years. Lucy and Robin also discuss who would be on their ultimate pub quiz team and which comedians would not get an invite. Plus, we gain some incredible general knowledge about the world of slapstick comedy and Robin uses the short time he had with our Jen to ask her some burning questions. BUY THE FOB BOOK HERE!Fingers on Buzzers: From Bullseye... by Ryan, Jenny (amazon.co.uk) Hosted on Acast. 87 Tipping Point - the REAL story

WARNING: After listening to today's episode of FOB, you may never be able to watch Tipping Point in the same way again, as Jenny and Lucy welcome a real life whistleblower to the show!Owen Visser may seem like a mildmannerd writer and performer (and one half of the frankly BRILLIANT Mr Thing), but he is in fact a former contestant on the one and only Tipping Point, and became front page news as a result.Owen's performance on the show caused quite a stir on social media and people were unforgiving when he made the kind of gaff anyone would, when standing under those studio lights, mere meters from the presence of Ben Shephard - it's easier at home you know! The Twitter tirade then caught the interest of the tabloid press and the rest is history .... or is it? Because we hear EXCLUSIVELY from the man himself, and find out what really goes on behind the scenes of one of Britain's best loved quiz shows... How many contestants can fit into a Tipping Point cab? Why is there a man in white gloves on set? What does Ben Shepard really smell like? All these questions and so much more are answered, so buckle-up and get stuck-in.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

41 Desert Island Buzzers

Who doesn't love a podcast mash-up? Maybe it's not your thing and you'd condemn them to a desert island forever if you could? Hopefully not, but if you happen to have a list of people, animals and things you'd banish tomorrow, then top, podcast 'Desert Island Dicks' would probably be a cathartic listen for you, and James and Dan from that very podcast join Lucy & Jen for this episode for some cathartic, quizzing fun. If you've been wanting to brush-up on your trivia on the subject of deserts, islands and dicks - then look no further than this very fun episode. Warning: it all gets a bit 'carry-on' towards the end, but who doesn't love a double entendre? 36 The Vixen & The Beast - With Mark Labbett

After the nation was gripped by ITV's new Quiz 'Beat The Chaser', the Fingers On Buzzers team decided it was high-time that Jenny went head-to-head with one of her fellow Chasers on the show; and so the imposing figure of 'The Beast' agreed to drop-in for a chat with 'The Vixen'.We hear from Mark Labbett about the importance of personality in TV quizzing, the lack of female representation and which of his TV colleagues he would (and wouldn't) want on his quiz team. Plus, Lucy and Jenny give some invaluable insights into making quizzing fun for ALL the family ... which is no mean feat, as we are all discovering. And a BIG thank you to Hassan Aslam for supplying this week's listener quiz, which was initially used to raise money for Age UK, Ealing ageuk.org.uk/ealing/Don't forget to check-out the team's social media for details on their retro quizzing watch-alongs - the next one is on Sunday 10th May 2020. @FingersBuzzers @Jenlion @lucyportercomic @amandakredman Hosted on Acast. This episode of Fingers On Buzzers was recorded the last time the gang were able to converge in the same room, drink fizz and talk quiz. Joining them in this Utopian scenario is quiz master extraordinaire Gavin Inskip. Gavin truly puts the entertainment into his quizzes, which subjects range from porn-hub to Brexit and everything in between. The gang provide some very useful tips on how to make quizzes fun for all the family (you should probably steer clear of porn-hub in a family scenario ... and Brexit come to think of it) which will come-in especially handy if you're listening during lock-down. It's International Women's Day! Well, it was when this was recorded anyway.Yes, on March 8th 2020, an international female collective of hosts Jenny, Lucy and special guest Kate Thornton gathered in front of a live audience for some quiz based japes. Journalist, TV and podcast presenter, Kate joined the gang for another live show, this time in aid of child.org and took part in quizzes referring to her stint as the youngest presenter of 'Smash Hits' magazine, her first, unforgettable encounter with the Spice Girls and a twitter spat between Nick Knowles and Kay Burley on whether it was Kate's suggestion that 'Candle In The Wind' should be used to commemorate Princess Diana ... spoiler alert no one really knows.Kate then rounds-off proceedings nicely by hosting her very own specially devised quiz show format! 33 Michael Sheen talks 'Quiz'

This episode is the first of Lucy & Jenny's quarantine records and what a start it is!This was recorded in the week that ITV's show 'Quiz' brought 'appointment' TV back into our lives.'Quiz' documents the story of Charles & Diana Ingram, who were found guilty of cheating their way to a million pounds on 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' back in 2001.A huge draw to the series is Michael Sheen's spot-on portrayal of host Chris Tarrant and the FOB team were beyond thrilled to be able to speak to Michael just before the final episode of 'Quiz' aired.Michael has always been a lover of the quiz genre, relishing being quiz master and contestant alike and his inside information regarding 'Quiz' just goes to show how exciting he found the whole process of filming it.We hear about the time Michael's family almost appeared on a TV game show, how he became the most excitable contestant to have ever been on 'Pointless', plus 'Chris Tarrant' pops in for this week's listener quiz. We hear about the shows he wished he'd produced ... and one or two he wished he hadn't and why you should never give-up on an idea you love.As always - but especially at this time, the Fingers On Buzzers gang wish everyone out there a very safe and happy week... we'll be back next Friday! 30 FOB LIVE : With Nick Helm

Welcome to Fingers On Buzzers series three! This was recorded back in a simpler time, when all we had to worry about was storm Ciara and isolation was only something we had to do after spicy food. So, Lucy and Jenny appeared less than 2 meters in front of a packed audience at The Bill Murray comedy venue in London for some live, quiz-based hilarity.Regular listeners may spot that this episode is somewhat of a departure from the norm - not only in format - but also language wise and that's largely thanks to our brilliant guest, comedian Nick Helm... although Lucy probably sets the tone fairly early on.Although it's not one to play in front of the kids, we guarantee it will help in these difficult times and bring a smile into your socially distant household.... Enjoy!Everyone at FOB Towers hope all of our listeners (and non listeners) are safe and well and look forward to seeing you when we are able to venture out into the wild again.Love, Lucy, Jenny and Producer Amanda. In this special episode, Jenny and Lucy look back to their first tentative steps into the world of general knowledge and it's apparent that our 'Vixen' has always had a touch of 'Chaser' in her. Whilst Lucy is most keen to reunite with a winning quiz team of her youth - they got in the local paper, you know! There's a look at kids TV quizzes past and present and we hear from former contestants of Britain's Brainiest Kid, Ask The Family AND from one chap who won a rather disappointing prize after a quizzing appearance on Crackerjack way back in 1968.Like the show? 06 Simon O'Hagan & You had me at “Chase spreadsheet”

Quiz isn’t just a mind sport, it’s a mind game – Lucy and Jenny discuss the psychology of quizzing. How do you prepare mentally and physically to succeed in your quizzing exploits? Can you drink and quiz?We chat to Jack Yeo, who has turned his obsession with TV quiz shows into a career behind the scenes in game show development – he tells us about that, and how his analysis of statistics means he knows the best tactics for contestants to take on The Chase. Our second guest is journalist Simon O’Hagan, who tells us about the challenges of setting the weekly quiz for the Independent magazine, the joy of finding great questions, and the art of writing an interesting and fun quiz. The Quiz Syllabus topics today are designed to really challenge each other on our weaker areas. Lucy poses some stumpers on Battles, while Jenny sets questions on Sporting Trophies.Get in touch: Facebook / Twitter @FingersBuzzers / fingersbuzzers@gmail.comProduced by: Amanda RedmanArtwork by: Brendan AppletonMusic by: Justin Edwards & Kevin MacLeod (Happy, Happy Game Show), Mad Moments Go (The Winner).Voice Over: Pete Donaldson Hosted on Acast. 05 Come & See What You Would've Won!

Lucy and Jenny discuss how the quiz world is becoming more ‘woke’ – why should so many questions be about dead white men? University Challenge have recently been making efforts to redress the balance with more questions about women and figures from BAME history, but is this enough? Is quiz classist? Join in the debate over at our Facebook page.We are joined by a contestant from one of our favourite shows of yore, Bullseye. Trevor Browning proved a hit when he appeared on the show in 1986 – you can watch his moment of glory here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1kKbDkbzXoWe also chat with Julia Hobbs, question producer on The Chase, for an insight into how a question goes from the writer’s brain to our TV screens. The Quiz Syllabus gets tough this week, with two topics that always come up in quizzes, but that we don’t remember much about between us – Traditional Anniversary Gifts, and Dukedoms. Spoiler alert - we don’t do very well.Get in touch: Facebook / Twitter @FingersBuzzers / fingersbuzzers@gmail.comProduced by: Amanda RedmanArtwork by: Brendan AppletonMusic by: Justin Edwards & Kevin MacLeod (Happy, Happy Game Show).Voice Over: Pete Donaldson Hosted on Acast. In today’s episode, your hosts Lucy Porter and Jenny Ryan discuss what the difference is between a game show and a quiz show. What defines a quiz show? Could it be evening dress and pipe-smoking? Do cargo nets make it a game not a quiz? Join in the discussion on our Facebook page. For a blast of nostalgia, we are joined by Dermot Finch, who didn’t exactly make a great account of himself when he appeared on Blockbusters as a sixth former. Fingers On Buzzers - The Trailer. Episodes from Sept 14th 2018.

Hosted on Acast.
