Mental Health Miniseries: Uma Naidoo, MD

We drink pressed juices and load up on whole grains to better our bodies, but what we eat and drink can nourish our brains too. That’s according to the rapidly growing field of nutritional psychiatry, which explores the benefits of food on cognitive well-being. On episode two of our three-part mental health miniseries, Uma Naidoo, MD, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and Michelin-star chef, tells us how meals can impact our mood. She also offers guidance on building out our grocery lists with nuts, fish, turmeric and other foods that can help fight anxiety and depression, and she breaks down the surprising connection between the brain and the gut. Mental Health Miniseries: Jennifer Heisz, PhD

When Jennifer Heisz, PhD, decided to complete an Ironman, she wasn’t looking to earn bragging rights. After years of researching how exercise can fight anxiety and depression, she wanted to feel the effects for herself. Then the pandemic closed her lab, shut down gyms and cancelled races. In the face of piled-on stress and uncertainty, she not only organized her own Ironman, she finished it solo. Along the way, she uncovered the pandemic paradox: Mental health is both a motivator and a barrier to exercise. On this episode, Dr Heisz kicks off our mental health miniseries by telling us what to do when anxiety stifles our urge to get moving. She also gives us a crash course on what goes on in the brain and body when we experience anxiety, stress or depression, and the ways that movement can ward off their symptoms. By detailing her scientific findings and her athletic journey, she shows us why it doesn’t take training for an Ironman to boost your brain, it just takes a little bit of movement every day.Learn MorePreorder Dr Heisz’s book, Move the Body, Heal the Mind, for the full scoop on her research and her solo Ironman. On days when you’re feeling off, find the motivation to move with her mental health tool kit.Get inspired with workout ideas for all levels on our NTC app.

Lewis Howes | Become Your Most Fearless Self

We all develop a wide range of skills in school, but one major topic your syllabi likely lacked? How to handle all your feels. Simon Sinek | Finding Your “Why”

Think about your training ambition: When does it change? What hurdles get in the way? How do you keep yourself going? And how often do you think about why you’re doing what you’re doing? Finding your “why” ––your motivation, your belief, your cause –sets people up for greatness. And no one understands this idea better than Simon Sinek, an author, ethnographer, organizational consultant, and self-proclaimed optimist, who has dedicated his research, books, and career to helping people find their “why” and achieve their long-term goals. On this episode, Simon gives us tips on how to find and stick to our own “whys,” walks us through the best way to manage stress and unpacks the idea of training as “an infinite game.” Because when you approach your training routine as something that can’t be won, that has no end, you give yourself room to constantly improve and focus on the process instead of the outcome. Melissa Hartwig-Urban | Reset Your Relationship with Food

Food is complicated. The “rules” change all the time, and every body is different. So how do you decide what’s right for you? For Melissa Hartwig-Urban, Co-creator of Whole30 and four-time New York Times bestselling author, it was a process. She started blogging about her “elimination diet” as a way to improve her training and recovery and share her results with her training community. Ten years later, her approach has become one of today’s most-popular eating programs: The Whole30. In this episode, Melissa explains why The Whole30 isn’t meant to be a long-term diet but, rather, an experiment to figure out which foods work best for you. She also provides us with tips on how we can learn to identify, cook, and eat “real food,” how to make meditation a consistent part of training, and how we can all cultivate a healthier relationship with food in order to bolster our performance, recovery and mindset.
