Coming Soon : The Followers

Hey Iain Dale listeners, here’s a brand new podcast we think you’d like, called The Followers. Shelagh Fogarty began her LBC career as a guest presenter in 2014, and her balanced and calm presenting style soon earned her a permanent role. Heartbreakingly, it was this calm approach which led to the most harrowing ordeal of Shelagh's life, when a man stalked her for nearly 2 years. In 2017, Shelagh began to notice the same face appearing in crowds, on the tube, outside her work. She dismissed it at first, but then the appearances became more and more frequent and noticeable - he was there when she met friends, when she travelled across London, at her local train station, and even when he followed her home.??The Followers is a 5-part LBC podcast series where Shelagh talks about the disturbing stages she went through during her stalking: dismissing it, fearing it, and feeling powerless as she was forced to live a limited life. The podcast also included conversations with experts and victims, looking at how societal views, misogyny and popular media tropes may be enabling stalkers to commit crimes without intervention.? Shelagh wanted to tell her story and to speak with various experts to understand more about obsessive and controlling behaviour, to deal with what happened to her on a personal level and to help others identify the behaviour that can lead to stalking. All 5 episodes will be available from July 4th exclusively on Global Player. Download it now from the App store or go to https://www.globalplayer.com If you think you or someone you know is being stalked, please call the police or the National stalking helpline on 0808 802 0300

News Hour | Race Report: Does the race report allow racists to flourish? with Denise Headley | 300 years of the British PM

Doreen Lawrence, who campaigned for 18 years for justice after her son Stephen was murdered by racists, has said a government-commissioned report that claimed the UK no longer had a system rigged against minorities could allow racism to flourish. “My son was murdered because of racism and you cannot forget that. Once you start covering it up it is giving the green light to racists. You imagine what’s going to happen come tomorrow. What’s going to happen on our streets with our young people? You are giving racists the green light,” Lady Lawrence said. Does the race report allow racists to flourish, and give them the green light? How significant are Doreen Lawrence's comments?

News Hour | Cross Question | Race Report: Do you believe the UK is not deliberately rigged against ethnic minorities?

The UK "no longer" has a system rigged against people from ethnic minorities, a review set up by No 10 says. The Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities said family structure and social class had a bigger impact than race on how people's lives turned out. It said children from ethnic communities did as well or better than white pupils, but overt racism remained, particularly online. The commission was set up after Black Lives Matter anti-racism protests across the country last summer - triggered by the killing of George Floyd in the US. Are you surprised by the findings? Do you believe the UK is not deliberately rigged against ethnic minorities?

The letter has been signed by high-profile figures such as actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, YouTube star KSI and actress Thandie Newton. Vaccination rates among black Britons are considerably lower than among white Britons. What more needs to be done to encourage black Britons to take the vaccine? What is the problem here and how can we resolve it?

News Hour | Scotland: What do you think about the Alba party? | Bangladesh Independence: How is this significant for you?

Nicola Sturgeon accused Alex Salmond of putting self-interest ahead of the country’s best interests as she placed independence at the heart of her Holyrood election campaign. In an online speech to the SNP’s campaign conference, the Scottish first minister refused to say her predecessor’s name but made a thinly veiled reference to his new breakaway party, Alba. What do you think about the launch of Alex Salmond's Alba Party? How problematic do you think this will be for Sturgeon? Landmarks and buildings around the UK have been lit up in red and green to mark 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence. Locations like the London Eye, Millennium Bridge in Newcastle and Cardiff Castle have brandished the colours of the Bangladeshi flag to mark half a century since the south Asian country broke away from Pakistan. What does it mean to be Bangladeshi in Britain today?

News Hour | Pandemic: Do you support those calling for an inquiry? | Lockdown: How do you reflect on the last year?

Keir Starmer has this morning argued that “we owe both the NHS staff on the frontline and all the families of those who have died to learn the lessons” of the Covid pandemic and to hold an inquiry into the handling of the health crisis. How confident are you the government has learnt its lessons and do you support those calling for an inquiry? A national minute's silence was held at midday, which parliaments across the UK paused business to observe. How do you reflect on the last year?

News Hour | Defence Review: Is cutting our troops the right thing to do? | Sturgeon: Does she deserve benefit of the doubt?

The size of the Army is to be reduced to 72,500 soldiers by 2025 as part of a move towards drones and cyber warfare. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said "increased deployability and technological advantage" meant greater effect could be delivered by fewer people. The review marked a shift from "mass mobilisation to information age speed". Is cutting our troops the right thing to do? Nicola Sturgeon has been cleared of breaching the ministerial code over her involvement in the Alex Salmond saga.
