The Corona Diaries

The Corona Diaries

By Steve Hogarth

Lead singer of Marillion, father, hippy, punk, soul singer, progressive rockstar (wtf!), defender of the faith, voice of reason in a world gone crazy... ...and now podcaster. Join me as I talk about my life and what is rambling around in my head. Along the way I will focus on some of the stories that have shaped my career and my life, as well as reading from my diaries and offering my take on the wider world. Stay safe, h P.S I began this journey just as CoVid-19 took hold and changed our lives, possibly forever, so it seems apt to reference that in the naming of the podcast.

Chapter 16. Lets talk about Fish

The night before we were due to record this chapter, the legend that is Phil Brown popped over for a catch-up and some serious gin sampling. Consequently we got talking about Phil, and how he had come to be the sound-guy for both Marillion and the h Natural shows. Well as you know I don't need a lot of encouragement, and before you could say big chunky jewellery, I was off regaling our adventures. But what has that got to do with Fish I hear you cry, well you will just have to be patient and listen to find out. Chapter 15. Gabriel, Glasgow & Gangsters

Cast your minds back a week or so, if you would be so kind, and try and recall where we finished up at the end of Chapter 14. Have you any idea what I am talking about?! If I said Benylin & Champagne...does that help at all? Thats it, my old Manager from the Harlow days - Jonathan Hodge. And today we revisit the tale of Jonathan and my brush with Gangsterism and swanky London penthouses. We also find time to talk about trying to play it cool with Peter Gabriel and first, and second impressions of Glasgow. Chapter 14. Under the Covers with h...

The first thing Ant said to me on the Zoom call this week was ‘I have got an idea for a title for Chapter 14...what do you think?!’ He went on to explain that he had been thinking about some of the cover versions that Marillion has released over the years, and maybe it would make a good conversation topic. So that’s what we did, and we talked about four tracks in particular - go on, have quick guess before you listen, and see how many you get. Oh and Mrs Kelly's rear makes a guest appearance. I’ll get mi coat.... h Become Purple and support the show (https://www.patreon.com/coronadiaries) The Invisible Man Volume 1: 1991-1997 (http://marillion.com/shop/merch/hogarthbook01.htm) The Invisible Man Volume2: 1998-2014 (http://marillion.com/shop/merch/hogarthbook02.htm) Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/IceCreamGenius/) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/stevehogarthonline/) Website (http://www.stevehogarth.com/) Support this podcast

Chapter 13. It's literally The Last Thing that I was thinking about.

As it turns out I woke up thinking about it, not quite in a cold sweat, but it certainly stirred me from my slumber. And it was The Last Thing that woke me. You will recall we have being talking about Ice Cream Genius over the last few episodes, and in all the excitement I had forgotten all about The Last Thing. As it turns out Ant had never heard the song itself, so I pinged it over to him so he could have a listen before taking him through the backstory. And it’s quite a backstory... Keep it purple! Chapter 12. Corona on the Couch! (& End-of-Tour Parties)

Where to begin... You may recall in an earlier episode that I eluded to some high jinks with support band The Violet Hour on the HiE tour. My recollection was of it all getting a bit rock’n’roll, with gaffa-taped guitarists, fingers in splints and blood on the carpet. However, after discussing the matter with Doris (singer with TVH) it turns out some of that story was indeed the stuff of legend, so in this weeks pod I have set the record straight. It did however provide Ant & I an opportunity to discuss touring, and the importance of live music to the financial well-being of all those involved. A timely segue... #letthemusicplay Keep it purple. h P.S listen out for the exciting TCD 'live special' news. Chapter 11. The Sound of Genius (in fancy dress)

After our little foray into the world of the six-string in Chapter 10, we are firmly back on plan this week as we delve further into the making of the Ice Cream Genius album. Ant wanted to talk about the evolution of the musical ideas on the album, and how the creative process may have differed from that with my regular band. So I have tried to recollect to the best of my ability, including tipping a nod to those that contributed to the sound of the record. The Diary section takes us to Italy, a great place to spend time, but heaven forbid you actually want to try and work there as a (professional) musician... 2 trucks, 2 tour-buses and a kettle lead... Chapter 10. Duran Duran’s Guitar & Harrison Ford’s Mouth

Stand up Dave Collopy and take a bow...because Chapter 10 is in no small part down to you. Dave popped me a question on Patreon (pay-tree-on) about my guitars, and my guitar-playing and because Ant is also a bit of a strummer, we ended up getting a little carried away on the subject. Of course how we then got to Duran Duran & Harrison Ford, is another one of those random TCD journeys - but you are all getting the hang of it by now I guess. Chapter 9. Estonia

The plan for this week had been to continue the story of Ice Cream Genius, but then I got an email asking about the back story to the lyric for Estonia and it seemed somehow apt. That took us on a journey that also covered the remix undertaken by the Positive Light boys and the their slightly unusual working methods. The diary section this week focuses on the later stages of the HiE tour. I find myself reminiscing about support act The Violet Hour (or Violent Hour, as it turned out) and agonising over the fate of a porcelain owl - possibly possessed by satan! Chapter 8. Ice Cream Genius and "Have you got a gun under that coat?"

Ant keeps banging on about Ice Cream Genius. Now don't get me wrong I am more than happy to bang on about it as well, the only slight challenge is that ICG is 23 years old and tbh the ol' instant recall isn't what it once was. But, as seems to be the case when we record this podcast, it all came flooding back - so prepare yourself for the backstory to the making of the album - the genesis of genius, if you will. On top of that we have more recollections of the Holidays in Eden tour in the diary extract, the continuing adventures of Texas Tim, NYPD, being followed by the fuzz on Brixton High Street and being taken behind Tie Rack in Gatwick. ('Twas the eyeliner wot did it...) In other news please find links below for Requiem For A Soldier and also The British Podcasting awards and thanks in advance for any support you can offer. Chapter 7. Better Dreams?

It's funny how fate plays it's hand... Ant wanted to ask about the story behind the song Better Dreams, because it turns out we both have a complicated love-hate relationship with Los Angeles. A few days later and our screens are alive with images from the U.S, encapsulating some of the themes I touch upon in that lyric. My friend Giorgio txted me from LA in the middle of the night. Two words (no full stop): "I'm terrified" I suggested he should move to Europe. Chapter 6. Gear and serial killers.

Monday morning 9:22am. Ant and I are looking on, bleary-eyed, caffeine-lite, and at opposite ends of a zoom call. We are discussing the plan for this episode and Ant has just said, that after listening to Chapter 5, his wife (Ali) didn't seem to think I had much luck with musical equipment. 'So, shall we pick-up the Europeans story, just after the electricity was cut off and all your gear got stuck in the basement of that rehearsal studio' 'We can do, but if we are going to talk about the Europeans, remind me to talk about Denis Nilsen, the Serial Killer' **Ant splutters and just about manages not to spit coffee everywhere** So amongst the memories of Depeche Mode, Film Stars, Lemon Meringue Pie & Chip Shop backing vocals, danger is lurking. Chapter 5. Holidays in Eden Tour memories, Previous Bands

Well it's been one hell of a week for me. Number ones really do appear to be like buses at the moment, you wait around for ages and then three come along at once. No.1 in the iTunes Rock Chart with Made Again 2020 No.1 in the Amazon download Chart and TCD No.1 in the Music Section of Apple Podcasts You literally couldn't make it up.... Anyway today we talk a little bit about my early gigging days in Doncaster, heading to London to be a pop-star ...and custard. Chapter 4. Trevor Horn, Dishwashers, Boy George, Iggy Pop, Princess Stephanie of Monaco.

We recorded this week's episode the day after my birthday, so can you guess what was the first thing Ant wanted to talk about?.. Lemon drizzle mmm... But then we got onto discussing the legend that is Trevor Horn, how our paths have crossed over the years and the creative fallout that has ensued. I've included a link to the album we discussed below. The diary section this week is a positive smorgasbord of home-plumbing, name-dropping, bad vasectomy jokes and me feeling terrible after ranting at Steve Howe. Quiet week. Chapter 3. The Worlds Greatest Case-Study

It's quite apt (bearing in mind the name of the podcast) that this episode is the first one we have recorded under lockdown conditions. And after a few technical issues, you know the kind of thing - zoom settings, microphone positioning, headphone monitoring, putting my tooth in, it all went rather well. It's a little hard to describe Chapter Three in just a few words as we managed to distract ourselves quite a bit whilst we were talking. So although it might meander (and I can't guarantee I answered as many questions as Ant asked) it should hopefully entertain. Thanks for all of your feedback so far, some of which we talked about in this episode, and please keep it coming. All the links you need are below... Chapter 2. Proper Prog Credentials

Whilst chatting off mic during the recording of Chapter 1, Ant was a little taken aback when I began talking about the the bands I had been into in my formative years. He had assumed, and I can kind of see why, that I had always been a bit of a popster in my youth. So we decided it would make an interesting place to start a gentle ramble through my musical influences. After that I read a little more for the diary. Chapter 1. This Strange Podcast

Well it's the first episode proper and why not start by joining the dots to the lyric from This Strange Engine. I have talked about this occasionally at some of the H Natural shows and Ant (producer & question asker) had remembered one such occurrence. So we considered it, for about the length of time it took the kettle to boil, and decided it would be an interesting place to start. The Prologue

"Whats that you say.....a Steve Hogarth podcast?!" As you will hear, I have shied away from things like this in the past, mainly because I was concerned I wouldn't be able to commit the time and ensure it turned out as well as it could. But then I was chatting to a friend who suggested a podcast (he's called Ant, and he has just started a business producing podcasts...). So, just for a lark, we decided to record a test-episode and it all turned out pretty well. I had the idea that as part of the project I wanted to narrate my diaries, which I we will be doing, as well as just chat about things that are going on with me and that have shaped my life and career. At the time of recording I was still struggling with a name, but as these first few episodes were recorded just as the country try went in to pandemic lockdown, the Corona Diaries became an obvious choice. Anyway, sit back and have a listen to this introduction to The Corona Diaries and if you enjoy it please subscribe for future episodes. You could also leave a review or head over to the website and leave me some feedback in the guestbook (http://www.stevehogarth.info/guestbook.php) Finally, you will find links below for all the digital spots I frequent, along with a link the to published diaries.
