Relief at Casemiro cup winner ahead of derby

The awesome foursome are united once again on Monday morning after Manchester United scraped through to the FA Cup quarter finals at the City Ground. Casemiro's late run, late in the game, was just enough to edge out relegation-threatened Forest in a "scrappy" encounter, and Erik Ten Hag was in a scrappy mood himself, defending Bruno (who assisted the goal with inventive free-kick delivery). However, the Manchester Derby comes next and, with so many positional problems it's difficult to be bullish about this one. Will Andy's hearty rallying cry inspire the team, and the fans, to turn Manchester red again? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Fulham defeat puts pressure on Ten Hag

A Monday morning full-house from the podcast team, but there's precious little positivity on offer after Manchester United lost at home to Marco Silva's Fulham. An injury to Rasmus Hojlund in training on Friday was a huge blow and it was alarming how much that unsettled the United attack. Our main concern, though, is how familiar many of the team's problems look. Erik Ten Hag bemoaned the inability to sign an additional striker over the last two transfer windows, but there's no doubting the pressure on the manager now to produce results; starting with the FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. Hojlund's on fire: Luton win becomes a grind

Manchester United won 2-1 at Luton's Kenilworth Road on Sunday night, and Andy Mitten was the happiest man in Bedfordshire. It wasn't all plain sailing, despite Rasmus Hojlund setting new Premier League record's for United's fastest goal and their fastest two-goal lead away from home. In fact, it became a bit of a chore. Partly because Luton showed their resilience, but also as a result of some tactical errors by senior pros. Thank Carrington, then, for Kobbie Mainoo who put in another calm, collected performance in midfield. Manchester United have identified Newcastle's Dan Ashworth as their primary target for the position of Sporting Director. With investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS nearing approval, a period of dramatic change seems inevitable. It's a fascinating time for us to be able to talk in depth with the club's Director of Academy, Nick Cox. In a wide-ranging discussion, we get into the realities of turning raw young talents into successful players and men. And, with a trip to Luton coming up this weekend, Ian, Andy, and Laurie are excited to see how Erik Ten Hag's men cope with the unique challenge that is Kenilworth Road. McTominay delivers huge three points at Villa

Ian, Carl, and Laurie are up bright and early on Monday morning in the hope that we can catch Andy Mitten has he passes through yet another airport. This time, it's India, where he enjoyed Manchester United's huge win at Villa in the company of a club legend. Scott McTominay earned that win with another late goal, prompting a magnificent stat from Laurie. We get into his unique role and a renewed determination from the team that left Erik Ten Hag in bullish mood. It was a great evening for Harry Maguire who dominated at set-pieces and Diogo Dalot had another good game as well. The pursuit of Champions League football feels like it's firmly back on track! The Munich Air Disaster: The Legacy

It is sixty six years since the Munich Air Disaster and the death of Sir Bobby Charlton in October means all survivors of the crash have now passed away. Yet, in recent years attendance at services in Munich and at Old Trafford have grown. We discuss the crash's legacy, Daniel Taylor's articles on The Athletic, and how the anniversary is observed. Robin van Persie returned to Carrington this week to fulfil a requirement of his UEFA Pro License with the Dutch FA. Yet, rumours of an "Arsenal snub" are exactly that, if not worse. We get into the clickbait industry that has been built on modern football's super-clubs. Coming up next for Erik Ten Hag's team; a trip to Aston Villa. While recent performances have been encouraging, and quite a few fond memories at Villa Park, there's an air of concern with no margin for error in the Champions League race. Hojlund/Garnacho deliver 'comfortable' home win; fingers crossed for Martinez

Recorded post-match at Old Trafford: Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Carl Anka are revelling in the slightly unfamiliar feeling of a comfortable win at home. What's more, it came against a pretty good West Ham team and, by a three goal margin. Birthday boy Rasmus Hojlund got the scoring underway with the only goal of a "pleasantly boring" first half, and Alejandro Garnacho notched twice in the second period with a cheeky nod to Mohammed Kudus... or was it Ronaldo?! The only dark cloud on the day was Lisandro Martinez's knee injury; we're hoping it's not as serious as the player's reaction might suggest. Rashford back with a bang, but Kobbie steals the show

Ian, Carl, Andy, and Laurie expected to be talking about Marcus Rashford, hoped to be talking about a Manchester United win, but had no clue about the rest. In the end, the evening belonged to Kobbie Mainoo. The 18 year-old scored his first senior goal for the club, a wonderful run and finish, and it was the last-minute winner in a seven-goal thriller! All this came after Rashford was chosen to start the game, scored five minutes in, and set Ten Hag's men on the way to a dominant first half that should have seen the game done and dusted long before the dramatic finale. Rashford absent as United ease past Newport

It wasn't all about Marcus Rashford this weekend, but his absence (through 'illness') did provide a medium sized distraction as Erik Ten Hag prepared his squad for a trip to fourth-tier Newport County. What next for the 26 year-old forward who shone last year but can't consistently reach the heights his talent promises? In the end, the return of some key figures saw the Red Devils through fairly comfortably; although there were a few palpitations when Bryn Morries and Will Evans levelled the scores at 2-2. We discuss Altay Bayindir's competitive debut and Antony's first goal of the season. Bristol City or Nottingham Forest await in the fifth round but, next up, a Wednesday EVENING kick-off at Wolverhampton, which usually proves "attritional". Learn more about your ad choices. Anthony Martial: Is this Goodbye?

We've got a full complement again as we dip briefly back into the Omar Berrada hire with The Athletic publishing fresh details on how the club got their man. Anthony Martial has undergone groin surgery, which means he will be out for ten weeks. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, he may have played his last game in a spell that leaves us asking what could have been. Manchester United have a game of football this weekend and everyone at Newport County is excited to be hosting the first ever competitive fixture between the two clubs, not least their manager Graham Coughlan, a huge United fan. Ian Irving is on great form, unlike last time, and the whole team are feeling pretty upbeat about Manchester United's prospects going into the new year. A creditable draw at Anfield... but how to capitalise?

Ian Irving and Andy Mitten are feeling a little tender this Monday morning. Fortunately, it's not because of another chastening defeat at Anfield! Laurie Whitwell completes the trio as we dissect a resolute defensive performance from Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United, albeit one with very little attacking threat. Anger after another disastrous road-trip

It's a full house on the podcast as we dissect another awful performance away from home at a top-half Premier League side. A 1-0 defeat in Newcastle didn't tell the story with Ten Hag's men clearly second best throughout. St James's Park has not been a happy hunting ground in recent years and the hosts were "good value" for their third consecutive win over Manchester United since the Carabao Cup final last February. Erik Ten Hag's in-game management is also looking shaky, especially when compared to last season. United have been drawn away in the cup(!), but the next three games will be at home, starting with Wednesday night's visit of Chelsea. This time, the opposition are at least as chaotic, probably more, and it's very difficult to predict how this game will play out. *** • Athletic Greens is going to give you a FREE 1 year supply of immune-supporting Vitamin D AND 5 FREE travel packs with your first purchase. In Memoriam: Sir Bobby Charlton

Ian Irving is joined by Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell as we share memories of the life of Sir Bobby Charlton, who died this week aged 86. A truly iconic figure, Charlton was a recognisable name the world over and he is one of only nine players in history to win a European Cup, a World Cup, and a Ballon d'Or. Yet as a member of the Busby Babes, a survivor of the Munich air disaster, captain of the 1968 European Cup winners, and a club director for almost 40 years, he meant even more to Manchester United. Tributes were paid before the Premier League win at Bramall Lane and more will follow when FC Copenhagen visit Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday. Reflections on FA Cup Final & 2022/23 Season

Ian Irving looks back over Manchester United's 2022/23 season with Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell, but sadly not Carl Anka. Andy and Laurie were at Wembley Stadium for Saturday's FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, Manchester City won the first ever Manchester Derby in that fixture, but after City's early goal it could have been worse. We had a post-match debrief with The Athletic's Manchester news reporter Mark Critchley. Treble Prevention Order: FA Cup Final Preview

Ian Irving is joined by Andy Mitten and Laurence James Whitwell to preview the final match of the season, the first ever FA Cup Final Manchester Derby. Of course, there's a lot more on the line than the Thomas Lyte-designed sterling silver cup. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City are just two games away from an unprecedented treble. The Garnacho Dilemma & Wembley Disappointment

Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell join Ian Irving to discuss the latest goings on at Manchester United with Carl Anka reporting from the Womens' FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. It was a frustrating afternoon for MUWFC and Marc Skinner who took the initiative against their more illustrious opponents, Chelsea, but were undone by a typically ruthless Sam Kerr. Two Own Goals as MUFC Squander Sevilla Lead

Ian Irving hosts a slightly shell-shocked Europa League debrief with Carl Anka, Laurie Whitwell, and Andy Mitten. Manchester United were 2-0 up after twenty minutes against relegation-threatened Sevilla, with the Spanish side naming some first-choice players on the bench. Real Betis will probably provide a sterner test in Seville, but with a three goal lead the next order of business should be the quarter final draw. We also add our tributes to those of the whole club and fanbase, to Ian Stirling, a legendary fan advocate and champion of many supporters' issues including safe standing and representation. Betis? Better! Weghorst & Fernandes Score in 4-1 Win

Ian Irving, Carl Anka, and Andy Mitten react to a hugely improved mood as Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United recover from Anfield embarrassment with a convincing Europa League first leg win over Real Betis. Goals (in ascending order of relieved player) came from Marcus Rashford, Antony, Bruno Fernandes, and Wout Weghorst, and the team will take momentum into the weekend's game against Southampton and the return leg in Seville. Another Cup Win, Another Home Draw, Another Massive Game at Liverpool

Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Carl Anka are still coming down from the high of winning at Wembley, but we've already got another cup win to celebrate. Alejandro Garnacho starred as Manchester United overcame a slow start to kick West Ham out of the FA Cup and, of course, they'll play at home in the next round. Carl Anka takes the helm with Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell joining him from the third tier of Camp Nou to digest a terrific first leg of the Europa League play-off tie between Manchester United and Barcelona. Leeds Win Caps Great Weekend: Barcelona Next!

Laurie Whitwell (and his cat, Ron) makes a podcast comeback with Ian Irving and Andy Mitten (and his dog). Manchester United beat Leeds at the second time of asking with another goal from Marcus Rashford and one from the recently-criticised Alejandro Garnacho. It wasn't vintage football but it's a huge result, especially with so many rivals dropping points this weekend. As we speak the team, and the fans, are Barcelona-bound for the the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Play-off. It's not the competition you'd expect, or want, to see that fixture in but it's a much higher quality contest than either side might have expected at the start of the season. Sancho Goal Drowns Out Disappointment of Leeds Draw

Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Carl Anka assemble under the eaves at Old Trafford with The Athletic's new boy Mark Critchley. It was a disappointing result, certainly, as visitors Leeds United caught Ten Hag's men cold, not once but twice! However, there was a warm glow in the air (and on Andy's face) after Marcus Rashford and the returning Jadon Sancho scored to salvage a draw. On that evidence, the trip to Elland Road will prove a tough test, but we're hoping one or two of the seven first team players who missed tonight's game will be available. Produced by Ollie Bellwood. Deflating Draw at Palace: Casemiro Won't Face Arsenal

Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, Carl Anka, and Laurie Whitwell were on cloud nine after the Manchester derby but it's down to Earth with a bump as United cost themselves two Premier League points with sloppiness at Selhurst Park. Casemiro has become a vital presence in midfield, so much so that Erik Ten Hag chose to start with him on Wednesday night, and it proved costly. A yellow card means he will miss the trip to the Emirates to face league leaders Arsenal; perhaps we could do with another brilliant Brazilian! News broke late on Sunday that Cristiano Ronaldo has made accusations against senior figures at Manchester United in a dramatically timed interview with tabloid journalist Piers Morgan. Coming to you from the bowels of Old Trafford immediately after Erik Ten Hag's side beat Liverpool to kickstart their season, we also discussed the huge protest march that dominated the build-up to the game. And there was the small matter of a £70m signing from Real Madrid. Brazilian midfielder Casemiro fetched the second highest fee for a player over 30 but he is a serial winner and it sounds like he still means business. Learn more about your ad choices. Humiliation at Brentford

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with football writer Carl Anka, regular contributor Andy Mitten, and club correspondent Laurie Whitwell. How bad were Manchester United at Brentford on Saturday? Nobody can remember a worse performance, and the stats suggest there hasn't been one in over a century of football. From De Gea to Ronaldo, the team looked no match for a Bees eleven that was assembled at a tenth of the cost. So, can Erik Ten Hag turn this Jumbo jet around having just left the runway, and is the transfer strategy built around Frenkie de Jong as fragile as it seems? Learn more about your ad choices. Brighton Loss Stirs Painful Memories: Are Rabiot and Arnautovic the Way Forward?

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with regular contributor Andy Mitten and club correspondent Laurie Whitwell. Any optimism from pre-season was dashed by defeat to Brighton, the visitors bringing back traumatic memories of recent years with their first ever win at Old Trafford. The Frenkie de Jong deadlock shows no sign of breaking and, as The Athletic's David Ornstein broke news of potential moves for Adrien Rabiot and Marko Arnautovic, it's fair to say anxious fans aren't reassured by either prospect. FA Cup: Scraping Through & Snide Boots

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with regular pundits, club correspondent Laurie Whitwell and United We Stand Editor Andy Mitten. There was a strong sense that United "got away with one" after the narrow FA Cup third round win over Aston Villa. Despite a promising start and some positive aspects, Villa were the better side for long periods and Marcus Rashford's form is a major cause for concern. Ten years ago this week Paul Scholes sprang a huge surprise on almost everyone involved with the club when he reversed his retirement to be named as a substitute against Manchester City. Ian tells us why one of his friends was particularly bemused when the news broke. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

New Year, Same Problems

The start of a new year on The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United, with Ian Irving and Andy Mitten returning for the first podcast of 2022. We've instant reaction from the home defeat to Wolves with our matchday reporter Adam Crafton before the boys break down the last couple of weeks of action. Is action the right word, though? The football has been on the dull side, despite Scott McTominay's best efforts. Not many fans on the edge of their seats at Old Trafford then (some didn't even have seats) but Phil Jones' return was a lovely story. Next up, two games with Aston Villa amid a January transfer window that's likely to feature more agent-chatter than tangible transfers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Talk of 2021: the Year in Summary

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with regular pundits, club correspondent Laurie Whitwell and United We Stand Editor Andy Mitten. The latest wave of Covid cases across the UK has already caused significant disruption to the pre-Christmas fixture list, and after United's last two matches were called off, we're waiting to hear from the Premier League and our new manager. Rangnick Rings the Changes

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with United We Stand Editor Andy Mitten and Staff Editor Anthony Hay. No fewer than six academy graduates featured in the Champions League fixture against Young Boys Bern. Quite a few famous-sounding names took the pitch for Manchester United but the most significant of those was Zidane Iqbal, the first British South Asian player to do so. The first-team regulars may not feel hugely threatened by that tepid performance, but Ralf Rangnick and his coaching staff, soon to feature two additions, won't allow them to get too comfortable with important, and very winnable, games on the horizon. Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with regular pundits, club correspondent Laurie Whitwell and United We Stand Editor Andy Mitten. Solskjaer Departs

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with regular pundits, club correspondent Laurie Whitwell and United We Stand Editor Andy Mitten. He was sacked as manager on Sunday morning and Michael Carrick will be in charge for the Champions League fixture at Villareal. Beyond that? Fans Surveyed: 69% Say Ole Should Go

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with club correspondent Laurie Whitwell and United We Stand Editor Andy Mitten. Andy wrote up The Athletic's survey of Manchester United fans this week, and the headline figure was the 69% of fans who said the manager should leave immediately. A similar number said signing Ronaldo was the right decision but there was no love for the Glazer family, while the players seem to have gotten off lightly. Meanwhile the club's CEO of Media, Phil Lynch, got a bit of stick after he took part in an industry podcast discussing the management of players' social media. Derby Defeat: Worse than Liverpool?

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's twice-weekly podcast dedicated to Manchester United, with regular guests Laurie Whitwell and Andy Mitten, as well as Michael Cox, the author of Zonal Marking. On paper, defeat in the Manchester derby, by two goals, looks less bad than the five-nil drubbing from Liverpool. However, there was a feeling among some supporters that this performance was even worse. Indications are still that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won't be dismissed but, as Michael explains, Manchester United are one of very few "elite" clubs who show such loyalty to managers. Worst Defeat in the Premier League

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with club correspondent Laurie Whitwell and United We Stand Editor Andy Mitten. We've had some miserable Mondays on the pod this season, but this one has to take the biscuit. A five-nil defeat at home to a bitter rival is bad enough, but the scoreline was almost kind to the Red Devils.
