Hojlund double delivers away win in Europe and derby 'hunger'
The Czech town of Plzen created a special beer to celebrate the visit of Manchester United, but after Andre Onana sold Matthijs De Ligt short, the Reds needed a Rasmus Hojlund double to round off the night.
After a turgid first half Hojlund, along with Ruben Amorim's other substitutes, injected pace and purpose bringing United level almost immediately and sealing the win late on.
To win away in Europe for the first time since March 2023 puts another positive spin on Sunday's derby at the Etihad Stadium against an ailing City side... but we're not getting carried away!

Ashworth out & Sir Jim Ratcliffe talks to Andy
After a tumultuous, albeit entirely precedented, weekend at Manchester United football club we break down two huge exclusives involving the team.
On Sunday The Athletic's David Ornstein, Adam Crafton, and Laurie Whitwell combined to reveal that Sporting Director Dan Ashworth would leave after just five months in the job. Meanwhile, Andy Mitten published a lengthy and wide-ranging conversation with club minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
We also take time, as everyone at Old Trafford did before the defeat to Nottingham Forest, to share tributes to the club's longest-serving staff member (perhaps ever), the much-loved Kath Phipps.
We just about found time to talk about some football, much of which wasn't great; but was it all that bad?

United undone by Arsenal set-pieces
Wednesday night's fixture at the Emirates stadium went roughly as expected, including the method of scoring, but was no less disappointing as a result.
Ruben Amorim made six changes to his starting line-up, with more alterations in-game, but he loses his impressive personal unbeaten run in the league.
Forest are no pushovers this season, we look at the threat they pose, and discuss a story from Adam Crafton about how and why the players abandoned a plan to wear jackets in support of the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign.

Amad on song as United thrash Everton
Manchester United four, Everton nil. It's the type of result that shouldn't be as rare as it has become but we're happy with the scoreline and delighted with the performance of the team, despite a fairly unspectacular opening period.
Amad Diallo was the man of the match, a 'professional pest' and provider of the fourth goal. That was scored by Joshua Zirkzee, who himself put in possible his best showing at the club so far.
There was more unrest at ticket price hikes, including chants against Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and we reflect on your reaction to the news, plus a preview of Arsenal away (that's the league fixture, not the FA Cup third round!).

Amorim opens OT account with a win amid ticket price anger
Ruben Amorim's first home match in charge of Manchester United started with a bang and ended with a win over Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt.
But, it wasn't all plain sailing; the visitors fought back to lead 2-1 after Garnacho's super-early strike (even quicker than Rashford v Ipswich) and the result wasn't assured until the final whistle blew.
A major talking point among those attending the game was the club's decision to disallow any concessions on tickets remaining for sale this season. This was taken without fan consultation, contrary to an agreed protocol between the club and fan representative groups, and has provoked significant anger.

Rashford ignites Amorim's United but team held at Ipswich
Marcus Rashford was on the scoresheet after just 81 seconds of Ruben Amorim's first game as Manchester United manager, rounding off a very encouraging move after good work from Amad Diallo.
Unfortuntately, that was as good as it got with Kieran McKenna's Ipswich fighting back to earn a point; perhaps a lesson for the Portuguese on exactly how competitive the Premier League is.
There was plenty to digest from that game, from positional play to passion and spectacular saves, and there's likely to be a fair bit more to come over the next few matches starting with a fascinating Bodo Glimt side on Thursday night.

Inside Ruben Amorim's first press conference
Premier League football returns after the November international break and the trip to Ipswich this Sunday(!) was on absolutely nobody's lips at Carrington on Friday.
That's because a sizeable press contingent had assembled to greet the club's new manager, or should that be head coach, Ruben Amorim.
Ian, Laurie, and Carl took part in said press conference with Andy listening in and we share our (mostly) first impressions of the Portuguese 39 year-old as he prepares his squad for Portman Road.

Tyrell Malacia exclusive and Q&A
The podcast team have returned from touring Britain and Ireland and we're wearing our fatigue heavily; well, some of us are... others are buzzing for Amorim's United. But, what's the right way to deal with the excitement?
It would be another huge boost to have Tyrell Malacia, a genuine left-back, returning to the pitch. He has been talking exclusively to Mark Critchley about the reasons behind his extended break with injury, and some of the crazier theories that emerged about why he was keeping a low profile.
And, we get to your questions on a wide range of subjects from youth team formations to the new coaches via european loyalty points.

Talk on tour as Van Nistelrooy departs
The lads are feeling a little bit worse for wear as we record in our hotel lobby after two nights on tour at Manchester's Lowry Theatre and the Limelight in Belfast.
It's a relatively quiet week at Manchester United with the new manager getting his feet under the desk amid a men's international break, but Laurie had a (short-lived) exclusive when we learned that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club.
We'll get into Ruben Amorim's in-tray next week, when we want your messages please, but we put down some early thoughts and glanced at a stuttering season for the Women's team, in contrast to the boys' U18s who are firing on all cylinders.

Van Nistelrooy interim spell ends with 3-0 win
The era of Ruud's interim Reds has come to an end, and it's been a near-perfect run. Three wins from four games, including Sunday's 3-0 win over Leicester, sees confidence much-improved since Erik Ten Hag left.
Ruben Amorim was due to start work at Manchester United on Monday 11th November, but visa friction may mean a slight delay. Nevertheless, we've got some fascinating material gathered by Charlotte Harpur as we try to get under the skin of the new man.

Amad sparks PAOK win in Europa League
Can a win be described as "routine" when it's your first in more than a year? If so, that's what 'Ruud's unbeaten interim Reds' achieved on Thursday night at Old Trafford.
Amad Diallo was the clear stand-out performer, first breaking the deadlock with a looped header from a searching Fernandes cross. He made the second himself with persistent pressing, a strong run, and a sharp finish. 2-0, job done.
That's not to say it was all plain sailing; van Nistelrooy was not pleased with the first-half performance and demanded better in the second. His time as manager will end with the Leicester game on Sunday but it remains to be seen if he will leave the club altogether.

Amorim confirmed: Ruud's interim Reds draw with Chelsea
Ruben Amorim has been officially confirmed as the next manager, or 'head coach', of Manchester United. He will start work on Monday November 11th, coincidentally the day of our live show at Manchester's Lowry Theatre!
We're making sure, as we did with Ralf Rangnick, that we leave no stone unturned when it comes to learning how to pronounce Ruben Amorim. Is the media's very positive take on the Portuguese matched by fan sentiment?
One thing is for sure, he has a big job in front of him. The man who now has most influence on how big that job will be is Ruud van Nistelrooy. The caretaker followed a good Carabao Cup win with a dull draw at home v Chelsea, which must be followed by victory over PAOK on Thursday night.

Amorim deal agreed and Ruud’s five-star Reds
Laurie brings us the latest details from the negotiations between Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United with a deal apparently agreed for the release of Ruben Amorim to join the club. But, it won't be an immediate move and there are still elements to sort out including the transfer of some assistants and coaching staff.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, then, will continue as interim boss and things started very well for him as Leicester City were dispatched from the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. His side led 4-2 at half-time and hit five in all, albeit not without a bit of luck here and there.
What next for Ruud; will he stay on under Amorim? We consider his future, answer a selection of your questions about an eventful week, and look ahead to a huge match against Chelsea (and, frankly, Cole Palmer) this weekend.

Ten Hag sacked; club 'working on deal' for Amorim
As revealed exclusively for The Athletic by Adam Crafton and David Ornstein on Monday lunchtime, Manchester United have relieved manager Erik Ten Hag of his duties after the team's latest defeat in the Premier League at West Ham.
So, where did it all go wrong for the man who arrived from Ajax with a reputation for strict discipline and a winning track record. He did win two trophies, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, but the team's form in the Premier League and European competition fell far below the standard required at Old Trafford.
And, following The Athletic's second huge exclusive of the day, Ian and Laurie make a late amendment to the podcast with a discussion of Ruben Amorim and why he has been identified as the man to replace Ten Hag.

Good point in Istanbul? Unhappy Hammers, and Pizzagate remembered
It's difficult to know what to make of Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United. We know they're not going to win the league, but can you honestly make a solid prediction beyond that?
In the Europa League, it'll be tricky to finish the first phase outside the top eight, but with three points from the first three games it's now not unthinkable. Strangest of all; at the end of ninety minutes in Istanbul, the happiest in the stadium seemed to be the one complaining about not getting a penalty.
West Ham at the Olympic Stadium next; not too many happy memories from that ground, or are there? Luckily, we do actually find our happy place precisely 20 years ago, when Arsenal's 49-game unbeaten run ran headlong into an immovable Phil Neville and the slice hit the man.

Hojlund winner lifts mood ahead of Mourinho reunion
The mood is "off the floor" after Rasmus Hojlund scored the winning goal in a game at Old Trafford against "decent Premier League side" Brentford. In fact, all the 'big' attacking players contributed, which is great news.
It could be important news as well, with a win in Europe long overdue and a trip to Istanbul up next. Jose Mourinho is not the only familiar face in the Fenerbahce camp, but they are a club with worries that might sound familiar to Manchester United fans as well.

Sir Alex Ferguson's departure stokes debate as Ten Hag returns to work
Manchester United have decided to terminate the contract of a manager, but it's not the current one.
Sir Alex Ferguson's role as a paid ambassador for the club will come to an end this summer, and it's a decision which has provoked a strong reaction, especially from some notable former players. Fans seem mixed, and our panel can certainly see both sides of the argument.
The women's team head to Brighton, the former club of red-hot striker Elisabeth Terland, with a 100% win record so far this season while Ten Hag's men face a tough test at Brentford. The first ninety seconds could be crucial in that one!

Villa draw but Ten Hag's future still uncertain; plus Bryan Robson!
Jonny Evans rolled back the years to provide Manchester United's defence with a vintage performance and a clean sheet.
Sadly, Ten Hag's attackers couldn't find the net again. The game was goalless, and provided very little by way of entertainment or clues as to the future of Erik Ten Hag.

Maguire rescues point after Porto implosion
There's a hint of crazed laughter in the voices of Ian Irving, Carl Anka, Andy Mitten, and Laurie Whitwell as they dissect the latest madcap entry in Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United soap opera.
Twenty minutes in, two-nil up and cruising, the team once again snatched chaos from the jaws of victory as they conceded twice before half-time, went behind less than five minutes after the break, and then lost captain Bruno Fernandes to a red card for the second successive match.
Harry Maguire's emphatic header from a Christian Eriksen corner saved a Europa League point, but will it save the manager?

Spurs defeat: a new low for Ten Hag?
There's a question mark in the podcast title, but there isn't much doubt in our camp. The first half against Spurs at Old Trafford on Sunday was the most disjointed, mistake-ridden performance we've seen since Erik Ten Hag became manager of Manchester United.
Bruno Fernandes red card was harsh, there's agreement there as well; but, by then, much of the damage had been done. For the second time in a week, an opposition defender carried the ball forty yards through the heart of midfield to set up a goal and the fragile atmosphere shattered.
So, once again, we're asking THAT question. The executive team, aiming to win the Premier League by 2028, chose to back their man in the summer but can he provide enough of an upturn in the team's results (and performances) to stretch his tenure as far as 2025?

Eriksen strike squandered as European struggles continue
Ian Irving, fresh from the stands at Old Trafford, holds court with Carl, Laurie Whitwell, and Mr Mitten as we cast judgement over another disappointing performance in Europe.
FC Twente, despite a rich history (one which features Erik Ten Hag in three spells), have the lowest UEFA coefficient of any of United's opponent's in this season's Europa League. That didn't stop them fighting back to earn a point, though, as Sam Lammers levelled following a series of mistakes and weak challenges.
Christian Eriksen was robbed of possession for the Dutch side's goal; a shame, as the night had been going pretty well for him. He celebrated his fourth consecutive start with a sharp strike from the edge of the box. Next up for Manchester United, Eriksen's old club Tottenham.

Performance at Palace but where are the goals? Europa League preview
The performance of Erik Ten Hag's side at Crystal Palace was, according to Laurie Whitwell, the most complete of his tenure. Yet, in order to be actually complete, the team need to put the ball in the net. Who's going to stick their hand up?
Marcus Rashford might have been high on your list of names there, but he was named on the bench at Selhurst Park. Rotated, not dropped, and Alejandro Garnacho deserved his chance to start.
Erik Ten Hag's boyhood team, FC Twente, will be the visitors in Wednesday's Europa League opener: it's a match that absolutely doesn't matter given the format of this year's competition. Yet, after the Palace result, this one does matter, and Andy says we should target this trophy.

Neville on Old Trafford, fresh start for MUFCW, good time to go to Palace
Andy Mitten secured an exclusive interview with Gary Neville this week, one which was reported widely (and sometimes inaccurately) by the press. We get his take first hand as the Old Trafford task force prepares to gather opinion from fans and local residents.
The WSL returns this week, and The Athletic's Charlotte Harpur has just arrived in Manchester where she'll have a news brief including coverage of United's women's team. It's been an eventful summer, one that has seen significant changes to the squad, and there are many questions to be answered as Marc Skinner's side prepare for the visit of West Ham on Saturday.
Erik Ten Hag's men brushed Barnsley aside in the Carabao Cup and are growing in confidence with a trip to Crystal Palace coming up this weekend. The Londonders aren't in their best form, so one thing is pretty much guaranteed; it will be more enjoyable than the last visit.

De Ligt, Rashford, and more: positives from "routine" Southampton win
Nobody's underestimating the achievement of a win on the South Coast but, despite a hairy opening half-hour, Saturday's three points at Southampton were won in relatively routine fashion... we're taking it.
Meanwhile, Manchester United's senior executives have assembled on the riviera in Barcelona where they have been discussing strategy and planning. Laurie pressed a metaphorical glass against the wall and lets us know what he knows about the major talking points.

Pressure on Southampton game with fan opinion divided
The band are back together as the international break draws to a close and we're looking ahead to a Southampton game which feels like it has a lot riding on it; for Manchester United, of course, but also for Erik Ten Hag with fan opinion split down the middle on his future.
The Athletic FC's recent survey of all their Manchester subscribers showed that, while there was strong support for INEOS and a big thumbs up for summer transfer business, expectation of results on the pitch aren't any higher than the end of last season.
And, with mixed fortunes for United's international players, we take a closer look at how Bruno Fernandes, Manuel Ugarte, and Matthijs de Ligt might be used in these next few games with so much at stake, plus a little bonus from Laurie's chat with Angel Gomes to mark his England debut.

Casemiro fallout as Liverpool cut through Ten Hag's United again
Arne Slot's Liverpool came to Old Trafford and won in second gear in his third game in charge; a damning indictment of Manchester United in the Premier League under Erik Ten Hag.
It all feels horribly familiar as we ask many of the same questions on the first "Monday inquest" of a new season. Is there a case for giving the manager and the squad any slack at the end of a busy transfer window, one that had looked very productive.

Transfer window rated... Sterling?! Fond memories fuel Liverpool fever
The summer transfer window is coming to a close and, albeit with several loose ends yet to be tied up, it looks like Manchester United have done what many fans have long hoped for and moved on several fringe players.
One of those loose ends is the uncertain future of Jadon Sancho. With rumoured interest from Chelsea seemingly reliant on a player swap, would Raheem Sterling actually make sense, or might there be other players who would serve the squad better.
And, with Liverpool making the short hop to Old Trafford this weekend, we use your memories of this fixture to get the fire burning. Hopefully, Erik Ten Hag can get one over on his compatriot, the more fashionable (?) Arne Slot.

Staying positive after Brighton defeat; McTominay to Napoli? Fee agreed
Another defeat to Brighton (bogey status confirmed), another late goal conceded (inverse Fergie Time pending), another problem defending a set-piece. This game had a worryingly familiar feel.
We're also worried about goalscoring in general, and specifically Marcus Rashford's form (even if he didn't justify all the criticism he got). However, there were positives, and we promise to get into those as well.
And with five days to go in the summer transfer window, a fee has been agreed with Napoli for Scott McTominay. Should the deal go through, maybe with a move for Jadon Sancho and some smaller sales, it could end up as a productive summer of outgoings.

Signings unlikely without sales, Brighton assessed
It's that rarest of beasts, a relatively quiet week in the existence of Manchester United. Despite that, there's a host of interesting questions as Erik Ten Hag prepares his squad for a trip to Brighton.
Listeners were eager to know more about potential recruits at left-back and in midfield, but with barely a week left in the summer transfer window, the sale of Facundo Pellistri isn't thought to be enough to free up PSR breathing space.
What about that game at the Amex Stadium. It's their first home fixture in the Premier League since losing 1-0 to... Manchester United at the end of last season. Ten Hag's men didn't play to their peak that day, and there's a very little margin for error this time.

Zirkzee delivers win with debut goal but Sancho misses out
Joshua Zirkzee might not be the most high profile signing of the summer but he got his club career off to the perfect start with a goal on his home debut. A goal that, finally, broke the deadlock and proved to be decisive.
Immediately after the final whistle at Old Trafford, Ian, Andy, and Laurie reflect on an encouraging win over a decent Fulham outfit and a positive, if imperfect, performance from Erik Ten Hag's team.
One man who wasn't involved was Jadon Sancho. A minor medical issue was the official cause, but with a fractious history between the player and the manager, there was inevitable speculation about another falling out or even a potential transfer.

Inside US tour & plans for 100k Old Trafford
Ian and Carl in normal surroundings, Andy and Laurie living it up on the West Coast. Talk of the Devils returns (again) for a dip into the US pre-season tour and a round-up of the latest news back in Manchester.
A 2-1 defeat to Arsenal didn't concern us much, with the result an afterthought and positive performances from established first team players (and one or two hopefuls).... but, there is some worry after injuries forced Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro off before half-time.
Closer to home, literally, and Laurie has been writing about an ambitious plan for a new one-hundred thousand seater stadium next to Old Trafford. What that means for the current stadium, and the surrounding area, is not clear but it is an intriguing development in what is already something of a saga.

Zirkzee arrives, Yoro targeted, as new INEOS structure gets started
An episode of your favourite Manchester United podcast... in July! We're really spoiling you with a midsummer catch-up amid a hive of activity at Carrington and throughout the club, including significant staff cuts as anticipated earlier in the year.
Maybe that should read Midsommar... with Ten Hag's early pre-season squad (and Andy Mitten) in Trondheim for a pipe-opener in the Norwegian sunshine. Not that the manager seemed to be enjoying it much after his team were beaten by a late goal.

Ten Hag survives, but can he thrive at United?
It's the least surprising emergency podcast in history: Erik Ten Hag will continue as the manager of Manchester United into the 2024/25 season. Nevertheless, the podcasters have assembled at short notice; breaking away from holidays, tours, Euro preparations, and a haircut, to get into some of the questions... and there are many.
How was the decision reached, and why did it take so long? How much did the FA Cup final affect the thinking? Is everyone fully on board? How close did any other candidate get to taking over? And, most importantly, what does the future hold, both for the man himself and his team?

Measure of Ten Hag’s 2nd season comes down to FA Cup Final
So, here it is, the season finale. Unfortunately, the Premier League has not ended as we would have liked, and Erik Ten Hag's men will need to win the FA Cup final if they want to play in Europe next season.
Under normal circumstances, that would be a good distance short of what is expected from a Manchester United manager and he would be seeking employment elsewhere. Of course, these are not normal circumstances.

Beckham on 99, Toone & Co storm Wembley, while storm descends on Old Trafford
A podcast very much in three parts for you on a stormy Sunday night in May with Andy and Ian braving the Manchester rain and Carl looking nervously out of his twentieth floor window...
Arsenal did what was expected of them at Old Trafford, winning for just the second time in seventeen attempts, despite a slightly brighter performance from Ten Hag's men. Huge Sunday in store for Ten Hag and Skinner
Another full house but we're a bit more relaxed now, a few days after that chastening result at Selhurst Park. One member of the team has even been brave enough to watch the game back again!
Now that everyone has calmed down, we have a more measured look at where Erik Ten Hag stands as Manchester United manager, whether there are any threatening candidates (or not), and whether he gets a slightly raw deal from the media.
...And there's a 'Super' Sunday in store with the potential for an annoying clash between the Women's FA Cup Final v Spurs and the men facing Arsenal at home, a fixture they've only lost once in the last sixteen iterations.

The end? Ten Hag's future in balance after Palace thrashing
It's another unwanted inquest on Talk of the Devils with Laurie Whitwell back in the UK and Manchester United back in the mire.
In fact, the whole podcast team are on hand as we dig into some heavy questions prompted by Crystal Palace's dismantling of a depleted United side. The biggest of those is whether the performance was bad enough for Erik Ten Hag to be relieved of his duties before the end of the current season.
Casemiro's form hit a new low but the whole team was some distance below acceptable standards and Ten Hag refused to single out individuals, instead citing a failure to 'follow the script'. Several television pundits said the writing is on the wall for the Dutchman, but does he deserve to lead the team out at Wembley?

Squad Audit: transfer priorities for a 'difficult' summer
It looks like Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS team have really taken the rudder at Manchester United, and the latest in a series of changes at executive level demonstrate just that.
But, with many football clubs close to the edge of their budgets, a quiet summer of transfer activity is expected and that means recruiting players will be challenging.
We asked for your priorities and used the answer to go through the current squad to try and shed some light on which players are likely to leave and who will be key to next season's campaign.

Old Trafford disappointed again as Burnley earn battling draw
Another Monday podcast, another day trying to defy the gloom after Erik Ten Hag's men made it one win in six games in the Premier League with a draw at home to relegation candidates Burnley.
We're actually talking about the performance, especially the first half, in fairly positive terms. Does that tell a story of lowered expectation? Is the Premier League proving, literally, too strong for this squad to excel?
Ten Hag's substitutes drew some ire in the stadium as well. Not so much who came on as who was withdrawn. If the team are to qualify for Europe, and that's no given, then they'll be playing a LOT of games next season, so squad depth will be essential.

United back up to sixth after Bruno blunts Blades
Ian, Andy, and Carl are all feeling a bit better about Manchester United, football, and life in general after Bruno Fernandes inspired a 4-2 home victory against Sheffield United.

We also have a brief update on developments at executive level, look at the 17/19 rule on season tickets, and the race to Europe with a trip to improving Burnley up next.

United sneak into FA Cup final on penalties
How can an FA Cup semi-final win at Wembley leave fans feeling empty, if not despairing? That's the conundrum we try to unravel on this podcast.
Recorded late on Sunday evening, in a state of serious fatigue, it's a riddle that tests our panel to their limits. What turned this performance from a stroll in the park into a near-catastrophic collapse.
So, from substitutions to celebrations, from the sublime to the ridiculous, and from Mongolia to Manchester, we cover plenty of ground trying to get to the bottom of a crazy day.

Champions League hopes ended at Bournemouth?
Andy is feeling a little low after his ambitions were thwarted in dramatic fashion in the Manchester Marathon. Unfortunately, Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United hit roadworks of their own at the Vitality Stadium.
A draw, and they were arguably lucky to escape with a point, means the team's Champions League hopes are hanging by the finest of threads. We've a full report on the match and rumours of a press conference spat involving the manager.
The FA Cup offers hope for Manchester United's men, and the women will head to Wembley for the final of their equivalent after they beat Chelsea for the first time since the team's reformation.

Murtough departs with mixed legacy
Laurie Whitwell is called away from the airport departure lounge to fill us in on his breaking story, that Manchester United's Football Director John Murtough has left his post this week.
Promoted internally and given a subtly different job title to many of his supposed equivalents, he has been viewed as a Glazer man by some with all the baggage that brings. But, as Andy and Carl explain, things are rarely as straight-forward as they appear from outside.
Meanwhile, it looks like INEOS are going for more of the same from the women's team, with Marc Skinner rumoured to be close to agreeing a new deal. Can they oust Chelsea in this weekend's FA Cup semi-final?
We were delighted to hear from Federico Macheda on The Athletic this week, even if it does make us feel quite old... he was full of praise for Kobbie Mainoo after the youngster's identikit goal against Liverpool. What we'd give for a follow-up at Bournemouth!

Liverpool red-faced again after Kobbie and Bruno's bolts from the blue
Manchester United will finish the season unbeaten against Liverpool after another "silly" game at Old Trafford finished in a two-all draw.
After an hour, Erik Ten Hag's men had achieved an xG of 0.01, yet they were level at 1-1, Bruno's magnificent 40-yard effort cancelling out the far-post finish from Luis Diaz at a corner. The game then swung completely when Kobbie Mainoo recreated Federico Macheda's famous curler.
Sadly, Liverpool did square it up at the end via a Salah penalty, and the podcast team are now looking anxiously at the mid-table sides gaining ground as the run-in hots up.

United lose the plot amid chaos at Chelsea
Two crucial fixtures in West London in the last five days have yielded just one point for Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United. If that wasn't bad enough, they held the lead going into the 99th minute in both games.
If Brentford was bad, this was an astonishing evening at Stamford Bridge. Looking fairly comfortable having put together another remarkable comeback, the Red Devils suddenly imploded to throw away all three points.
So, what does this result, and the manner of the defeat, mean for Erik Ten Hag's future as Manchester United manager?

Mount moment in vain as United fall flat at Brentford
It may be Easter, but it feels a lot like a Monday as Ian Irving hosts Andy Mitten and Carl Anka to "pick over the carcass" of Saturday night's performance at Brentford.
Such was the home side's dominance, it's easy to forget this finished a draw. But, after Mason Mount's late goal was cancelled out, it felt like a defeat, with comparisons even drawn to the horror show at the same venue last season.
What price a win at Chelsea, then, and how will this squad look next season, with question marks over so many of the personnel in midfield and defence?

Thanks to everyone who sent in questions and requests; we get to as many of those as we can, covering midfield options with or without Casemiro, the future at left-back, and our podcast roles as Man United heroes.
Saturday evening sees Ten Hag's men make their first of two upcoming stops in West London. Brentford are this weekend's opponents, bringing back some ugly memories for manager, fans, and podcasters alike.

Sancho goals send reminder as Ten Hag faces crucial cup test
It's a fresh looking line-up on Talk of the Devils as Mark Critchley and Jay Harris drop by to talk Jadon Sancho, money matters, and Liverpool with Ian and Andy.
Sancho got his first goal back in yellow at the weekend and Jay was at Bremen to see the game and talk to various Dortmund figures about how the United exile is doing. With Antony also failing to fire in red, it could be an interesting summer for the two big-money signings.
Critch, meanwhile, has had a much less interesting assignment; he seems concerned about his new status as our US finance correspondent. And, with a massive game against Liverpool coming up this weekend, the stakes couldn't be higher for Erik Ten Hag.

The Rise of Garnacho & Mayor Andy Burnham on Old Trafford Plans
Once again, it wasn't pretty, but Manchester United got the job done. two-nil at home with Alejandro Garnacho winning two first-half penalties, scored by different players.
The same questions remain, though. Casemiro's wasteful performance with the ball was the latest worrying midfield display and a huge performance was required by both centre halves, especially this season's unexpected hero Jonny Evans.
One person who didn't enjoy Saturday's game is Evertonian Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester. He joins us to discuss his role on a new task force of "decision makers" aiming to get the ball rolling on the redevelopment of Old Trafford and the surrounding area.

In Focus: Andre Onana, Women's Team, Everton
The team have relocated to Hotel Football, overlooking a very famous waterway, not that Ian Irving would know. We're going in-depth today, first on Andre Onana, the subject of 'cautious optimism' and a detailed profile by Andy Mitten and Carl Anka.
Slightly less optimistic, though not without hope, is the outlook for Manchester United's Women's team. They haven't been able to recreate the magic of last season having lost key players. Might they lose an even bigger asset in Mary Earps?
...and, with Everton coming to Old Trafford this weekend, there's no room for any sentiment with wins at an absolute premium.

Rashford thunderbolt not enough as City grind down United rearguard
Marcus Rashford would have been a huge talking point on Manchester derby day whatever happened after his op-ed for the Players Tribune. But, with less than ten minutes on the clock, he struck hope into red hearts with a lightning strike from thirty yards.
Throughout the first half Erik Ten Hag's innovative selection had Pep and City frustrated, albeit they used the lion's share of possession and territory to carve out some decent chances, one in particular...
But, Phil Foden turned the game on its head with two goals, and we were left wondering if this was a worrying indictment of United's status quo or if injuries were sufficient to justify the game-plan.

Relief at Casemiro cup winner ahead of derby
The awesome foursome are united once again on Monday morning after Manchester United scraped through to the FA Cup quarter finals at the City Ground.
Casemiro's late run, late in the game, was just enough to edge out relegation-threatened Forest in a "scrappy" encounter, and Erik Ten Hag was in a scrappy mood himself, defending Bruno (who assisted the goal with inventive free-kick delivery).
However, the Manchester Derby comes next and, with so many positional problems it's difficult to be bullish about this one. Will Andy's hearty rallying cry inspire the team, and the fans, to turn Manchester red again?

Fulham defeat puts pressure on Ten Hag
A Monday morning full-house from the podcast team, but there's precious little positivity on offer after Manchester United lost at home to Marco Silva's Fulham.
An injury to Rasmus Hojlund in training on Friday was a huge blow and it was alarming how much that unsettled the United attack. Our main concern, though, is how familiar many of the team's problems look.
Erik Ten Hag bemoaned the inability to sign an additional striker over the last two transfer windows, but there's no doubting the pressure on the manager now to produce results; starting with the FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Hojlund's on fire: Luton win becomes a grind
Manchester United won 2-1 at Luton's Kenilworth Road on Sunday night, and Andy Mitten was the happiest man in Bedfordshire.
It wasn't all plain sailing, despite Rasmus Hojlund setting new Premier League record's for United's fastest goal and their fastest two-goal lead away from home.

The Munich Air Disaster: The Legacy
It is sixty six years since the Munich Air Disaster and the death of Sir Bobby Charlton in October means all survivors of the crash have now passed away. Yet, in recent years attendance at services in Munich and at Old Trafford have grown. We discuss the crash's legacy, Daniel Taylor's articles on The Athletic, and how the anniversary is observed.
Robin van Persie returned to Carrington this week to fulfil a requirement of his UEFA Pro License with the Dutch FA. Yet, rumours of an "Arsenal snub" are exactly that, if not worse. We get into the clickbait industry that has been built on modern football's super-clubs.

Hojlund/Garnacho deliver 'comfortable' home win; fingers crossed for Martinez
Recorded post-match at Old Trafford: Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Carl Anka are revelling in the slightly unfamiliar feeling of a comfortable win at home. What's more, it came against a pretty good West Ham team and, by a three goal margin.
Birthday boy Rasmus Hojlund got the scoring underway with the only goal of a "pleasantly boring" first half, and Alejandro Garnacho notched twice in the second period with a cheeky nod to Mohammed Kudus... or was it Ronaldo?!
The only dark cloud on the day was Lisandro Martinez's knee injury; we're hoping it's not as serious as the player's reaction might suggest.

Rashford back with a bang, but Kobbie steals the show
Ian, Carl, Andy, and Laurie expected to be talking about Marcus Rashford, hoped to be talking about a Manchester United win, but had no clue about the rest.
In the end, the evening belonged to Kobbie Mainoo. The 18 year-old scored his first senior goal for the club, a wonderful run and finish, and it was the last-minute winner in a seven-goal thriller!
All this came after Rashford was chosen to start the game, scored five minutes in, and set Ten Hag's men on the way to a dominant first half that should have seen the game done and dusted long before the dramatic finale.

Rashford absent as United ease past Newport
It wasn't all about Marcus Rashford this weekend, but his absence (through 'illness') did provide a medium sized distraction as Erik Ten Hag prepared his squad for a trip to fourth-tier Newport County. What next for the 26 year-old forward who shone last year but can't consistently reach the heights his talent promises?
In the end, the return of some key figures saw the Red Devils through fairly comfortably; although there were a few palpitations when Bryn Morries and Will Evans levelled the scores at 2-2. We discuss Altay Bayindir's competitive debut and Antony's first goal of the season.
Bristol City or Nottingham Forest await in the fifth round but, next up, a Wednesday EVENING kick-off at Wolverhampton, which usually proves "attritional".

Anger after another disastrous road-trip
It's a full house on the podcast as we dissect another awful performance away from home at a top-half Premier League side. A 1-0 defeat in Newcastle didn't tell the story with Ten Hag's men clearly second best throughout.
St James's Park has not been a happy hunting ground in recent years and the hosts were "good value" for their third consecutive win over Manchester United since the Carabao Cup final last February. Erik Ten Hag's in-game management is also looking shaky, especially when compared to last season.
United have been drawn away in the cup(!), but the next three games will be at home, starting with Wednesday night's visit of Chelsea. This time, the opposition are at least as chaotic, probably more, and it's very difficult to predict how this game will play out.

The Good, the Bad, the Ten Hag Q&A
Victor Lindelof succeeded where the attackers struggled and provided a winner against Luton. Relief was the most obvious response but, wait, what's that? Manchester United are the most in-form team in the Premier League?!
As the men go into an international break, Ian Irving looks at the good and the bad of Erik Ten Hag's current squad with the help of Andy Mitten, Carl Anka, and a selection of your questions.
The club's attention will now turn to Sir Bobby Charlton's funeral on Monday. Then, the following Sunday, the women will face Manchester City at Old Trafford with a big crowd expected.

Marcus Rashford's red card was the turning point on a bizarre evening, we'll get into the refereeing decisions, whether Ten Hag should come out firing, and the fear factor.
Luton Town have never won at Old Trafford and they've never beaten Manchester United, not under that name at least. Surely, that's a much needed three points this weekend... isn't it!?

Maguire & Onana deliver vital win but derby day needs dramatic improvement
Today's podcast will be in three parts, with increasing numbers of people. In order of appearance, Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, Laurie Whitwell, AND FINALLY, Carl Anka.
Andre Onana's penalty save was the very last touch of the ball in a dramatic Old Trafford victory, one that reignites the team's hopes of Champions League qualification. Copenhagen's bilingual singing fans were a credit to their , showing great respect as the club said goodbye to Sir Bobby Charlton.
Everyone is hoping for the same on Sunday when Manchester City come calling. Hopes of a respectful reception for Sir Bobby should be the expectation, but whether we should be banking on a home win; that's another matter entirely.

In Memoriam: Sir Bobby Charlton
Ian Irving is joined by Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell as we share memories of the life of Sir Bobby Charlton, who died this week aged 86. A truly iconic figure, Charlton was a recognisable name the world over and he is one of only nine players in history to win a European Cup, a World Cup, and a Ballon d'Or.
Yet as a member of the Busby Babes, a survivor of the Munich air disaster, captain of the 1968 European Cup winners, and a club director for almost 40 years, he meant even more to Manchester United.
Tributes were paid before the Premier League win at Bramall Lane and more will follow when FC Copenhagen visit Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Details of how you can pay your respects to Sir Bobby can be found here.

Meanwhile, at Leigh Sports Village, the women's team have already booked their first ever Champions League campaign with another first, a WSL derby win. Ona Batlle scored the winner in 'Skinner Time' to delight a record crowd and keep their title hopes alive going into the final round of games.

Live Show Scouting Session & Sam Billings
Andy Mitten looks on from Barcelona this week as Ian Irving, Carl Anka, and Laurie Whitwell scout out New Century. That's one of the venues for our live shows, with new dates announced for September in Manchester AND London.
We've also been catching up with England cricketer Sam Billings as he prepares for The Hundred, but really all he wants to talk about is Manchester United. Quite right, too!
...And we take a look forward to a big weekend for the club: the men travel to Bournemouth with a top four position looking just a little bit precarious, and the women have a WSL Manchester derby with the title very much on the line.

The Garnacho Dilemma & Wembley Disappointment
Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell join Ian Irving to discuss the latest goings on at Manchester United with Carl Anka reporting from the Womens' FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.
It was a frustrating afternoon for MUWFC and Marc Skinner who took the initiative against their more illustrious opponents, Chelsea, but were undone by a typically ruthless Sam Kerr.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho sealed a relatively comfortable Premier League win over Wolves at Old Trafford. The youngster is making a name for himself, but still has a lot to learn, so it's a real challenge to navigate his development.

Champions League Chasing: De Gea Clanger Dents Hopes
Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Laurie Whitwell have got the hump with Manchester United's away form. David De Gea's rick at the London Stadium made the headlines but the performance was alarmingly familiar.
What we'd give for a run of away form like the one seen under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; we wonder if he is remembered unfairly on the tenth anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement. Meanwhile, MUWFC are making great strides towards a successful season, and are now just a point from securing their Champions League place.

Nightmare Away Form Continues at Brighton
Brighton's last-gasp penalty means Manchester United will almost certainly finish the Premier League season with just one point from all their away games at top-half clubs; Ian Irving carries out the post-mortem with Andy Mitten and Carl Anka.
On the 30th anniversary of the club's first ever Premier League title, we remember Steve Bruce's party, Sir Alex Ferguson's team-talk, and legendary players wearing questionable suits.
The next game is away, but it's at relegation-threatened West Ham, managed by David Moyes. Let's hope for a good Manchester United, and not a "Dundee Utd".

Ian Irving is joined by Laurie Whitwell and Dan Sheldon post-match at Old Trafford, before a later date with Laurie, again, and Andy Mitten.
On the agenda: two crucial league wins against Aston Villa as Manchester United's men and women both took another step towards next season's Champions League.
The game at Old Trafford also made the news with another anti-Glazer protest, this time headed up by fan group "The 1958".

A Point at Spurs, OK? & Mary Earps Exclusive
Ian Irving holds court as Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell negotiate the post-match obstacles of Tottenham with Carl Anka chuckling on from Manchester. The big question is whether Thursday night's draw at Spurs is an acceptable result given Manchester United's away record and the opposition's recent travails. We also take a quick look ahead to the weekend's match against Aston Villa which will surely provide a tough test for a tired looking group of players.
Mary Earps will be in action against Aston Villa on Friday night and she has been looking ahead to a thrilling season finale for the women's team with Carl and Charlotte Harpur. With two trophies and Champions League qualification on the line, will she be dancing on a press-conference table next month?

Lindelof Sets Up All-Manchester FA Cup Final
Logistics very nearly got the better of us but despite a dash to Euston after the penalties we do have a Wembley podcast for you with instant reaction to the win over Brighton from Ian Irving, Carl Anka, Andy Mitten (just about), and Laurie Whitwell.
It'd be fair to say this one wasn't a classic, but Victor Lindelof's winning penalty did set up the first ever all-Manchester FA Cup final, and a possible chance to deny City the treble...

Europa League Horror Show: United Crash Out in Seville
Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Laurie Whitwell report on a disastrous night for Manchester United after they were dumped out of the UEFA Europa League in Seville.
The men will have to pick themselved up quickly to beat Brighton in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final; a feat already achieved by the women's team, who went on to beat Arsenal in the WSL on Wednesday night. Chelsea may yet pip them to the title, but they should now qualify for next season's Champions League.

Two Own Goals as MUFC Squander Sevilla Lead
Ian Irving hosts a slightly shell-shocked Europa League debrief with Carl Anka, Laurie Whitwell, and Andy Mitten.
Manchester United were 2-0 up after twenty minutes against relegation-threatened Sevilla, with the Spanish side naming some first-choice players on the bench. It was a golden opportunity to finish off the tie.
That the game finished level was largely down to an uncomfortably familiar frailty, the inability to maintain control, but it could also have been worse had de Gea not (again) made some crucial saves.

Wout Out, But Rashford Seals a Welcome Win
Ian Irving, Laurie Whitwell, and Andy Mitten were relieved to see Manchester United win in the Premier League for the first time since February; who else but Marcus Rashford provided the winning goal after a neat header from the more-advanced Marcel Sabitzer.
Ten Hag's side will host Everton this Saturday lunchtime and while, league position says it will be a difficult place for them to get a result, they do have a surprisingly good record at Old Trafford in recent years.

Man Utd Take Full Advantage as Fulham Blow a Gasket
A 3-1 home win in the FA Cup against Fulham sounds like comfortable Sunday afternoon viewing for Manchester United fans. You probably already know that wasn't the case, but Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Laurie Whitwell are here to fill you in on the details.

Southampton Stalemate: A Draw, Not a Disaster
Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Carl Anka review a disappointing weekend for both the men's team, who saw Casemiro sent off in a goalless draw with Southampton, and the women who lost to WSL title rivals Chelsea.
Erik Ten Hag's men now have a Europa League second leg to prepare for. Real Betis will probably provide a sterner test in Seville, but with a three goal lead the next order of business should be the quarter final draw.
We also add our tributes to those of the whole club and fanbase, to Ian Stirling, a legendary fan advocate and champion of many supporters' issues including safe standing and representation.

Leeds Win Caps Great Weekend: Barcelona Next!
Laurie Whitwell (and his cat, Ron) makes a podcast comeback with Ian Irving and Andy Mitten (and his dog).
Manchester United beat Leeds at the second time of asking with another goal from Marcus Rashford and one from the recently-criticised Alejandro Garnacho. It wasn't vintage football but it's a huge result, especially with so many rivals dropping points this weekend.
As we speak the team, and the fans, are Barcelona-bound for the the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Play-off. It's not the competition you'd expect, or want, to see that fixture in but it's a much higher quality contest than either side might have expected at the start of the season. We've got the juice on the ins and outs of that game, and the host city.

Sancho Goal Drowns Out Disappointment of Leeds Draw
Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Carl Anka assemble under the eaves at Old Trafford with The Athletic's new boy Mark Critchley.
It was a disappointing result, certainly, as visitors Leeds United caught Ten Hag's men cold, not once but twice! However, there was a warm glow in the air (and on Andy's face) after Marcus Rashford and the returning Jadon Sancho scored to salvage a draw.
On that evidence, the trip to Elland Road will prove a tough test, but we're hoping one or two of the seven first team players who missed tonight's game will be available.

Weghorst Off the Mark as United Take Charge in EFL Cup Semi-Final
Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Carl Anka are in good spirits (in one case, quite literally) and we've added a musical twist to the show as we celebrate taking control of the EFL Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.
Taking a three goal lead into the home leg means Erik Ten Hag should be able to rotate his squad over the next few days. The optimism is flowing, so much so that we're not too downbeat about a slightly ominous financial report on Manchester United from The Athletic's Matt Slater.

Deflating Draw at Palace: Casemiro Won't Face Arsenal
Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, Carl Anka, and Laurie Whitwell were on cloud nine after the Manchester derby but it's down to Earth with a bump as United cost themselves two Premier League points with sloppiness at Selhurst Park.
Casemiro has become a vital presence in midfield, so much so that Erik Ten Hag chose to start with him on Wednesday night, and it proved costly. A yellow card means he will miss the trip to the Emirates to face league leaders Arsenal; perhaps we could do with another brilliant Brazilian!

Rashford Wins Derby: Manchester is Red Again!

The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United returns in time for Christmas with a full complement in healthy voice, ready and raring to go.

Glazers Open to United Sale & Ronaldo Gone!
What a day! Just when you thought things might be a bit quieter with the World Cup fully underway in Qatar we get, not one United bombshell, but two huge stories.
First, news of Ronaldo's immediate release after the club and player reached a mutually exclusive agreement. Ordinarily, that would be the story of the month, but just a couple of hours later it became apparent that the Glazer family have instructed banks to seek out new investment avenues. Could that mean a sale? It certainly looks like it.

Laurie is then joined by Ian Irving, Carl Anka and Andy Mitten to get their thoughts on that Ronaldo interview. We also get the views of thousands of subscribers to The Athletic who responded to our poll.
Then we'll hear from former United keeper Edwin van der Sar, now CEO at Ajax, talking about the transfers of Lisandro Martínez & Antony.

Bombshell Ronaldo Interview Steals Garnacho's Thunder
News broke late on Sunday that Cristiano Ronaldo has made accusations against senior figures at Manchester United in a dramatically timed interview with tabloid journalist Piers Morgan. It will dominate the headlines, no doubt about that, but many fans of the club may be suspicious of his 'revelations'.
The interview somewhat overshadowed Alejandro Garnacho's late winner at Fulham in United's last game before the mid-season World Cup break. We've been hyping up the young Argentinian's performances and he's looking more and more like a happy bonus for manager Erik Ten Hag.

Rashford finishes off Villa & is Garnacho already the real deal?
Ian Irving is joined by The Athletic's Andy Mitten & Carl Anka to look back on a mad game at Old Trafford that saw United see off Aston Villa in the league cup with Marcus Rashford & Alejandro Garnacho shining.
Is this the best version of Rashford we've seen? Has Alejandro Garnacho arrived now as a United player?
There is also a discussion about the form of Jadon Sancho - who didn't make the England World Cup squad - & Donny van de Beek who struggled again when given a chance.

Defeat at Villa but Barcelona await
Ian Irving, Carl Anka, Andy Mitten and Laurie Whitwell are on hand for live(ish) reaction to the Europa League draw which saw United paired with Barcelona in knock-out playoffs, a game they're already calling the Mitten Derby.
That's something to fear/look forward to in February. In the meantime though, the gang look back on the dire 3-1 defeat at Villa Park and wonder what next for poor Donny and, er, Ronny. What changes will Erik Ten Hag make when these two sides meet again in the League Cup this midweek?

Ian Irving is joined by Andy Mitten & The Athletic's Pol Ballus in San Sebastian to reflect on United's win at Real Sociedad in the Europa League that wasn't enough for United to top the group, meaning a play-off is needed to make the play-offs.
A night of mixed emotions that saw Alejandro Garnacho score the winner in the first half and ended with Harry Maguire playing upfront with Cristiano Ronaldo.

All in the Head: Rashford's 100th Goal
Marcus Rashford's West Ham winner was his 100th goal for Manchester United and the landmark put him in reflective mood about his struggles last season and the change in "headspace" that has seen him return to form this term.
It wasn't always pretty but the team looked solid at the back; David de Gea made some heroic saves and the back four all had good games. United are now unbeaten in eight and looking forward to a potentially season-defining group decider in the Europa League.

Sheriff Win Sets Up Group Showdown
A start and a goal for Ronaldo, early withdrawals for some key players, and a bright performance from young forward Alejandro Garnacho. It wasn't the most exciting game, but everything went right on the night; well, almost everything...
David de Gea's contract is up this summer and, while the club have an option to extend that deal for 12 months, Athletic writer Pol Ballus isn't sure they will. Another David; Moyes (NOT May), brings West Ham to Old Trafford on Sunday and the podcast team are confident of another good result.

Casemiro Header Showcases United Spirit
Casemiro's last-gasp header showed the player's fierce desire has not waned after his transfer from Real Madrid, and it summed up the team spirit shown at Stamford Bridge. United had dominated the early part of the game, but having conceded to Jorginho's penalty with just minutes left, it feel like a "winning draw".
It all happened without Cristiano Ronaldo, of course, and his future will become clearer when the squad is announced for the Europa League fixture on Thursday. Better news on the club's third former Madrid player; after Raphael Varane reacted emotionally to his knee injury, it may not be as bad as feared.

United Attack Misfires Again
Newcastle have one win from their last 40 visits to Old Trafford, but that statistic will bring little relief to fans frustrated by a scratchy Sunday stalemate. Ronaldo, Sancho, and Antony started but couldn't find the net, and Marcus Rashford missed a golden chance with a late header.
The last home win during the month of October was in 2019 and that wait could be extended with a strong Tottenham side visiting in midweek. No such problems for Manchester United's women who went top of the WSL with Ella Toone scoring twice in a comfortable victory over Brighton.

Instant reaction from Ian and Laurie at the Etihad Stadium, and Andy with the Chicago Reds, after another convincing win for City in the Manchester derby.

How bad were Manchester United at Brentford on Saturday? Nobody can remember a worse performance, and the stats suggest there hasn't been one in over a century of football. From De Gea to Ronaldo, the team looked no match for a Bees eleven that was assembled at a tenth of the cost.

We're giving the Everton match a wide berth, although it would've been even wider if Andy had had his way. Hopefully, Erik Ten Hag will provide us with some good news soon.
But, we did find a way to cheer ourselves up, with a visit from Bulgaria's silkiest striker Dimitar Berbatov. He will be back at Old Trafford for a legends' match against Liverpool in May to raise funds for the Manchester United Foundation.

Erik the Red? Speculation Intensifies
Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with United We Stand Editor Andy Mitten and club correspondent Laurie Whitwell.
It feels like we're reaching the endgame in the recruitment of the club's next permanent manager, and Erik ten Hag is now strongly rumoured to be in pole position. We consider how life might look if the current Ajax boss does take the job.
One man who you can be pretty sure would welcome such an appointment is Donnie van der Beek; United head to his loan club Everton this week with the hosts' Premier League future very much at risk.

Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United in conversation with regular Athletic contributor Andy Mitten and club writer Carl Anka.
Roy Hodgson brought the Hornets to Old Trafford on Saturday and they were well beaten by Ralf Rangnick's Manchester Utd. At least, they should have been, but chance after chance went begging and the game finished goalless.

Derby Defeat: Worse than Liverpool?
Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's twice-weekly podcast dedicated to Manchester United, with regular guests Laurie Whitwell and Andy Mitten, as well as Michael Cox, the author of Zonal Marking.
On paper, defeat in the Manchester derby, by two goals, looks less bad than the five-nil drubbing from Liverpool. However, there was a feeling among some supporters that this performance was even worse.

We also talk about Park Ji-Sung, who has asked fans to stop singing a song with offensive lyrics, and Mason Greenwood, who won't be joining the England squad during the upcoming international break.

Claret and Blues All Over Again
This is The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United, hosted by Ian Irving, with club writers Laurie Whitwell and Andy Mitten.
Familiarity was the theme on this miserable Monday morning. Once again, a team wearing Claret and Blue came to Old Trafford, and once again they pulled off a smash-and-grab. This time it was Aston Villa heading back to Brum with three Premier League points.
The next visitors will be Villareal, no strangers themselves. They specialise in draws, with five of their six La Liga fixtures (and the European Super Cup) ending all square. A draw is no good for United, though, so they'll have to outdo Chelsea and both Madrid clubs by sinking the Yellow Submarine.

De Gea and Lingard Deliver Hammer Blow
The Athletic's Manchester United reporters Carl Anka and Andy Mitten join Ian Irving to break down yet another away win in the Premier League.
Perhaps it was destined to be Jesse Lingard's day. He added the winner after Cristiano Ronaldo's equaliser at the London Stadium, but Solskjaer's team also needed a late penalty save from 'David de Gea.
Is it enough to be doing just enough? Carl Anka has written about exactly that this week, but it's a subject that splits the podcast panel. We also react to the rumours surrounding Declan Rice and consider the rematch with West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

Next up, a visit to Bern's Wankdorf Stadium to face the city's Young Boys, prompting a few obvious one-liners. But, it's an important fixture as United seek to gain an early advantage over group rivals Villareal and Atalanta.

Better Call Sa-ool: Unexpected Loan Rumours
Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's dedicated twice-weekly Manchester United podcast with expert guests Andy Mitten, Editor of United We Stand, and club correspondent Laurie Whitwell.
We've been talking about midfield reinforcements quite a lot lately, but there's been little mention of Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez. Nevertheless, he's emerged as a potential recruit, but are Chelsea in the driving seat? And why is such a high status player available on loan?
We also take a trip back in time to remember 2011's thrashing of Arsenal, one which all but finished off the Gunners as a Premier League rival, take a quick look at cup draws, and hope for more excitement than usual at Molyneux.
