De Bruyne bags four at Molineux | Wolves 1-5 City

Two games left to play, and City need four points to be Premier League champions again. A 5-1 win away at Wolves on Wednesday edged City closer to the title. Kevin De Bruyne scored four – including a first-half treble all scored with his weaker left foot. It was masterclass from the Belgian. Raheem Sterling added a fifth late on from close range. It was a superb performance. De Bruyne's hat-trick within 24 minutes is the third earliest scored from the start of a match in Premier League history. It’s a crowded field but this may well have been his best performance of the season. It means City have scored ten goals in our last two Premier League matches. We are three points ahead of second placed Liverpool and our goal difference is superior by seven. After the game, we heard from De Bruyne and Guardiola – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Shaun Goater and Shaun Wright-Phillips.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. City extend Premier League lead | City 5-0 Newcastle

A hugely significant weekend in the race for the Premier League title race ended with City beating Newcastle 5-0. After a gut-wrenching Champions League defeat to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, City could not have had a better weekend as we extended our lead at the top of the Premier League table to three points with three matches of the season remaining. Liverpool drew 1-1 with Tottenham at Anfield on Saturday night, before a dominant performance at the Etihad saw us beat Newcastle 5-0. It saw a huge swing in goal difference, with City now four goals better off than Liverpool. This was a classy display from City, with the character we showed in bouncing back so brilliantly very encouraging indeed. Raheem Sterling scored two, with Laporte, Rodri and Foden also in the scoresheet. It was total control throughout for City. After the game, we heard from Jack Grealish and Pep Guardiola and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Steve Howey and Shaun Goater.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. All-time Champions League classic | City 4-3 Real Madrid

An all-time Champions League classic. Manchester City 4-3 Real Madrid, with more of the same likely next week at the Santiago Bernabeu. It was a breath-taking night at the Etihad on Tuesday as City beat Real Madrid in our semi-final first leg. Quite how we will only go to Spain with a one-goal lead is anyone’s guess. City were far superior. It was a pulsating match – one which was impossible to take your eyes off. City raced a two-goal lead – the first time in Champions League history Real Madrid had conceded two in the opening 11 minutes of a game – before Karim Benzema halved the deficit before half time. Phil Foden made it 3-1 and became only the second English player to score in a Champions League semi-final before the age off 22, before Vinicus Jnr again got one back for Real. Bernardo Silva made it 4-2 before Benzema struck again. After the game, we heard from Pep Guardiola and Ruben Dias – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Shaun Goater and Shaun Wright-Phillips.   Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Jesus bags four in Watford rout | City 5-1 Watford

City 5-1 Watford. Another step towards the Premier League title successful negotiated. It was a special day for Gabriel Jesus, as he bagged his first ever Premier League hat-trick. In fact, he scored four and assisted Rodri’s goal, too. There was little doubt who the man of the match was. It leaves City in control of the Premier League title race with five matches left to play. This win moved us four points ahead of Liverpool, although they have a game in hand against Everton on Sunday. The equation is simple: win all five and we will be champions for the fourth time in five seasons. City are now the first team in Premier League history to win 15 consecutive matches against the same opponent. And Gabriel Jesus has become the first player to score four goals in a single Premier League game since Tottenham's Son Heung-min vs Southampton in September 2020. After the game, we spoke to Man of the Match Gabriel Jesus and the mastermind behind it all, Pep Guardiola – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Paul Dickov, Michael Brown and City fan Steven McInerney.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. City remain in title driving seat | City 2-2 Liverpool

A fantastic game at the Etihad leaves City one point clear of Liverpool in what is turning out to be another very tense finale to a Premier League season. City were excellent and will feel a hint of disappointment not taking all three points, but to be in the driving seat at this stage is a real positive. De Bruyne opened the scoring – he now has six goals in his last six matches – only for Diogo Jota to equalise. Gabriel Jesus re-established City’s lead with a fine finish from Joao Cancelo’s superb delivery, but Sadio Mane’s goal just after half time brought Liverpool level again. After the game, we heard from Pep Guardiola and Kyle Walker – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Shaun Goater and David James.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. De Bruyne and Gundogan seal vital win | Burnley 0-2 City

In this episode, we look back at our 2-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor. Liverpool’s victory over Watford in the early kick off saw City go into the game second – and unusual position for us. The last time we ended a day off top spot was December 3, so the pressure was on. But City were excellent. Our possession game and the quality and speed of our passing was exceptional and Burnley really struggled to contain us. Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan got the goals – both of which were beautifully worked – with Raheem Sterling assisting each of them. Couple of interesting stats to sweep up. Gundogan is now the top scoring German in Premier League history. No player has ever taken more points from their first 100 Premier League appearances than Aymeric Laporte. And Raheem Sterling has now scored or assisted 200 City goals. No one has contributed direct goal involvements for the club since his arrival in 2015. After the game we heard from Pep Guardiola and Ilkay Gundogan – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Paul Dickov and Shaun Goater.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Foden seals vital win at Goodison | Everton 0-1 City

Some wins feel like more than simply three points and that was the case as City beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday. Against a side fighting for their lives and much improved after a change of manager, City managed to beat Everton with a single goal, scored by Phil Foden with just nine minutes of normal time reaming. It felt like a hugely significant day. With defeat last time out against Tottenham reducing our lead at the top of the Premier League table to three points, victory on Merseyside felt vital. Everton made it incredibly hard for us, but we showed real fighting quality and deserved the win. There’s no doubt about it: the final three months of the season are going to be tense, every game now of huge significance in both league and cup competitions. After the game, we heard from Pep Guardiola, Phil Foden and John Stones – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Shaun Wright-Phillips and Shaun Goater  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. City dismantle Sporting in Champions League last-16

Sporting 0-5 City. Another famous Champions League performance from Pep Guardiola’s men. Welcome to Manchester City’s official podcast, I’m your host Rob Pollard. It was a special night in Lisbon as we equalled our record away win in the Champions League thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling and two from Bernardo Silva. The quality of the goals was amazing. Guardiola, though, feels City can do much better. The manager felt some of our build-up play lack fluidity. He certainly won’t be taking his foot off the gas when Sporting visit the Etihad for the return leg in three weeks’ time. Sterling hat-trick seals 14th win from 15 games | Man City Podcast

Norwich 0-4 City. A Raheem Sterling hat-trick and another from Phil Foden sealed a fine win on Saturday at Carrow Road as City made it 14 wins from our last 15 Premier League games. It took us 12 points clear at the top of the table once again, although Liverpool have two games in hand, starting with their trip to Burnley on Sunday. City were exceptional, despite making five changes and then bringing on three youngsters during the closing stages. This is a squad with quality throughout. And there’s no doubt we’re going to need it. With City chasing a fourth league title in five years – and with FA Cup and Champions League involvement too – the next few months could be manic. All the players will be called upon. After the game, we heard from Pep Guardiola and hat-trick hero Raheem Sterling – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Andy Morrison and Shaun Goater.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Cancelo dazzles as our lead is extended | City 2-0 Brentford

It’s now two wins from two for City since returning from the mid-season break – the latest a 2-0 win over Brentford at the Etihad thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne. The win means City are now 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but second-placed Liverpool do have two games in hand, the first of which sees them host Leicester on Thursday. Joao Cancelo was once again in inspired form. He signed a new deal with City last week and this performance underlined why that was such a good move by the club – he was exceptional. 500 Premier League points for Pep | Southampton 1-1 City

City’s winning run in the Premier League has come to an end after a 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday. It means we are now 12 points clear at the top of the table – but Liverpool have two games in hand to reduce the deficit. Kyle Walker-Peters gave Saints the lead, but Aymeric Laporte’s header ensured we left with a point. It was a landmark day, with Pep Guardiola becoming the quickest manager to reach 500 Premier League points. He has reached the milestone in just 213 games. For context, the previous quickest to 500 was Jose Mourinho, who managed the feat in 231 games. It’s an incredible statistic that further underlines his brilliance as a manager and City’s consistency under his guidance. After the game we heard from Pep and goal scorer Aymeric Laporte – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Paul Dickov and Nedum Onuoha.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. De Bruyne sends City 13 clear | City 1-0 Chelsea

Manchester City are 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table after a fine win over Chelsea. Kevin De Bruyne, who was brilliant throughout, scored the winner, a superb curling effort that gave Kepa no chance. It was another solid display, with City restricting Chelsea to a single shot on target. Liverpool could leapfrog Chelsea into second place and close the gap to 11 points when they host Brentford on Sunday. That one kicks off at 14:00 (UK). Pep Guardiola has now amassed 499 Premier League points as City manager and Ederson has kept a clean sheet in exactly half the games he’s played in the competition making him the only goalkeeper with 100+ appearances to do so. 11 on the bounce | Man City Podcast

11 Premier League wins in a row and 11 points clear at the top of the table! Our last-gasp 2-1 win over Arsenal on new Year’s Day felt hugely significant. With a number of players missing and a short turnaround between our game away at Brentford and this one at the Emirates, it was always going to be a big ask – but champions find a way to win. In many ways, this was more satisfying than some of our more comfortable victories in recent weeks. It was Rodri who got the crucial winner deep into injury time – a goal he’ll never forget. 10 wins in a row and 8 points clear | Brentford 0-1 City

City are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table after our 1-0 win over Brentford made it 10 wins in a row. Our victory over Thomas Frank’s side means we end the year on a high, and with Liverpool’s defeat at Leicester on Tuesday and Chelsea’s draw with Brighton on Wednesday, we now have a healthy lead as we head into 2022. Phil Foden scored the only game of the game. City weren’t in premium form, but we got the job done against a tricky opponent. It’s been a quite remarkable 2021. We have won 36 league games – the most any top-flight side in England has ever managed – including a record 19 away wins. We’ve also scored 113 league goals, the most by a top-flight team in a single calendar year since 1960. We are witnessing greatness. And that doesn’t mean we will definitely win the league this season. Liverpool and Chelsea are fantastic opponents and there are 54 points still to play for – 57 if you’re Liverpool. But we are witnessing an incredible period in our club’s history. Our consistency is unrivalled, the quality of football mesmeric. City move six points clear after Etihad thriller | City 6-3 Leicester

Nine Premier League wins in a row! City’s 6-3 Boxing Day victory over Leicester means we are six points clear at the top of the table with one game remaining in 2021. It was an extraordinary game at the Etihad – the highest scoring boxing day match in the Premier League era. City have now scored a remarkable 112 Premier League goals in 2021. That's the most by any top-flight English side has managed in a calendar since Arsenal hit 112 back in 1963. In this episode of the Man City Podcast, we hear from Pep Guardiola and Raheem Sterling, and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Paul Dickov and Shay Given.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. City set two English football records | Newcastle 0-4 City

Another fine victory for City. Our 4-0 win away at Newcastle on Sunday means our lead at the top of the Premier League has been extended to three points, after second-placed Liverpool drew 2-2 at Tottenham. It was another fine performance for City, who looked thoroughly comfortable throughout. Once again, the goals were spread around, with Dias, Cancelo, Mahrez and Sterling all getting on the scoresheet. The victory also saw City set two significant English football records. We have registered the most top-flight wins in a calendar year. This was our 34th of 2021, which eclipses the previous record of 33 which Liverpool managed under the great Bob Paisley back in 1982. We now have two more Premier League games – at home to Leicester and away to Brentford – to extend our record further. And it was our 18th away win in the league this year, more than any other top-flight side has managed in the history of English football. Indeed, our 18 wins means we surpass the previous record of 17 set by Bill Nicholson’s doubling-winning Tottenham side of 1960-61, widely recognised as one of the finest this country has ever seen. Pep and his team continue to move the dial. 500 PL goals and counting under Pep | City 7-0 Leeds

Manchester City 7-0 Leeds United. It was one of the most dazzling performances of the season from the reigning champions and it was a pleasure to watch - City hit fifth gear and were unstoppable. Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne (2), Riyad Mahrez, John Stones and Nathan Ake all scored, as we moved four points clear at the top if the table. Foden’s strike to open the scoring was our 500th Premier League goal since Pep Guardiola took charge in the summer of 2016. It’s a remarkable record, with the 500 goals coming in just 207 matches – an average of 2.4 goals per game. That means he is the quickest manager to reach 500 in the competition’s history. Jurgen Klopp, who sits second on the list, took charge of 234 Premier League matches before his Liverpool side made it to 500, with Alex Ferguson in third having seen his Manchester United side strike 500 times in his opening 265 games. Sterling joins Premier League 100 Club | City 1-0 Wolves

Wolves made things hard for City but Raheem Sterling's 100th Premier League goal sealed a narrow - but vitally important - victory. Sterling is only the 32nd player to enter the Premier League 100 Club and he is the eighth-youngest to achieve the feat. And on a day of centuries for City, Ederson kept his 100th clean sheet for the club. City set club record and go top of the table! | Watford 1-3 City

A 3-1 win at Watford on Saturday – our seventh victory in a row in all competitions – saw us go top of the Premier League for the first time this season after Chelsea’s defeat earlier in the day. Raheem Sterling headed home the opener and a Bernardo Silva double put us 3-0 up, before Cucho Hernandez’s late goal reduced the deficit. A new club record was set. It was our 31st win of the calendar year, surpassing our previous record of 30, which we managed in both 2017 and 2019. Pep reaches 150 PL wins in record time | Aston Villa 1-2 City

City made it six wins on the spin with a 2-1 victory at Villa Park on Wednesday night. Our first-half performance was exceptional, particularly in the context of a somewhat depleted squad. Ruben Dias struck from distance to give us the lead, before Bernardo Silva scored a goal of the season contender. His volley was emphatic, finishing off one of the most ruthlessly efficient counter-attacks you’re likely to see. Ollie Watkins gave villa hope early in the second-half, but we saw the game out fairly comfortably. It was Pep Guardiola’s 150th Premier League win, a milestone he has reached in just 204 games. No manager in Premier League history has reached 150 wins quicker than pep. For context, it took Jose Mourinho 231 games Alex Ferguson 247 games to reach that number. City deliver sparkling display to top Group A | City 2-1 PSG

There have been some special nights at the Etihad Stadium and Wednesday was right up there. Two of the best teams in world football going head-to-head and it was City who came out on top, beating PSG 2-1. It was a richly deserved victory. The win means we top the group. It’s the fifth straight season we have done so and the ninth season on the bounce we’ve qualified for the last 16. The stats show we out-passed and outran PSG – and we were certainly more organised and inventive. It was a fantastic performance. Cole Palmer starts as City ease to victory | City 3-0 Everton

Manchester City 3-0 Everton. It was a fine performance from City after an international break that had taken its toll in terms of injuries. Raheem Sterling marked his 300th Premier League appearance with a goal, finishing expertly after an outrageous pass from Joao Cancelo. Rodri was the star man, continually putting out fires and spraying passes around, and he hit a goal of the season contender for City’s second. And Bernardo Silva finished the game with our third – he now has 25 Premier League goals to his name. Cole Palmer started and James MacAtee came on for his Premier League debut. With Phil Foden also starting, it was another great day for our Academy. It’s also worth noting this was our 20th clean sheet the league in 2021, which is the most we have achieved in the Premier League in a calendar year. Total domination | Manchester United 0-2 City

Manchester United 0-2 Manchester City – the 186th Manchester derby as one of the most one-sided in history. It was an almost flawless performance from City on Saturday. Total domination from start to finish at Old Trafford, with an Eric Bailly own goal setting us on our way, before Bernardo Silva finished off a 26-pass move. Having played Tottenham, Leicester, Chelsea, Liverpool and now Manchester United away from home, we are tucked in nicely, three points off the leaders heading into the November international break. Special mention for Rodri, who was outstanding in the holding role at Old Trafford, and Bernardo Silva, whose dream season continues apace. Mancini, Johnson and a derby double! | Sven-Göran Eriksson in conversation

This week, we are joined by Sven Goran-Eriksson - one of football’s preeminent figures in the 90s and 2000s. As manager of Manchester City in the 2007-08 season, he drastically improved our playing style, brought in some quality players and was a wonderful statesman who represented the club with dignity. Gothenburg, Benfica, Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Lazio, England, Manchester City, Mexico, Notts County, Ivory Coast, Leicester City and more… Sven has one of the most storied careers in the game. His incredible success at Gothenburg, where he took part-time players to a European trophy, catapulted him into some of the biggest jobs in world football. His most successful periods came at Benfica and Lazio - in fact his Lazio side was one of the greatest club sides we’ve ever seen. He’s a huge character in the game. This interview forms part of a larger project. CITY+ subscribers can watch a full documentary about Sven’s year in charge right now, which includes contributions from Nedum Onuoha and Elano, amongst others.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Foden entering world-class bracket! | Brighton 1-4 City

Another blistering performance from Manchester City. Fresh from our 5-1 win away at Club Brugge on Tuesday, City put another fine display to dismantle Brighton on Saturday 10 years to the day since our famous 6-1 win at Old Trafford. City ran out 4-1 winners at the AMEX thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, who scored twice, and Riyad Mahrez. Bernardo Silva was, again, absolutely magnificent – he ran further than anyone and was so dangerous with his movement, touch and passing – and Phil Foden, as I’ve said a few times on this podcast, is now entering the very top tier of players in world football. He is bona fide world class, he’s a lifelong City fan and he’s been at the club since he was at U9 level. It’s the perfect story. It was also a day for refection. City fan Guido De Pauw, a member of the Blue Moon Belgium Supporters’ Club, was attacked in Belgium on Tuesday after our win in Brugge. He has been in a coma ever since but is now in a stable condition. The players wore t-shirts to show our support and the travelling fans held aloft a banner. The whole club is rooting for you, Guido, our thoughts very much with you and your family. In our review of the victory today, we hear from Paul Dickov and Michael Brown, who were with us in the Matchday Live studio, as well as our manager, Pep Guardiola, and midfield maestro Ilkay Gundogan.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Palmer scores maiden Champions League goal | Club Brugge 1-5 City

City delivered a wonderful display in Belgium on Tuesday, beating Club Brugge 5-1 - equalling our biggest winning margin in the Champions League proper. It was a near-perfect display. City, led by the genius of Phil Foden, were sharp, inventive and creative. Brugge struggled to get the ball off us and we are now in a very strong position to qualify from Group A. Both full-backs scored – has that happened for City before? – Mahrez got two and Cole Palmer’s dream week continued when he became only the third teenager to score in the Champions League for City (the others being Foden and Kelechi Iheanacho). Palmer came off the bench for the first team in Saturday’s win over Burnley in the Premier League, before hot footing it over to the Academy Stadium where he scored a hat-trick in our Premier League 2 game against Leicester – and now he has a goal in Europe’s elite club competition. He is a star in the making and this is a week he will never forget. After the game, we heard from scorer of the opening goal Joao Cancelo, as well as the mastermind of it all Pep Guardiola – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Andy Morrison and Richard Dunne. Bernardo stars as City see off Burnley | City 2-0 Burnley

On today’s episode of the Man City Podcast, we are looking back over City’s 2-0 win over Burnley at the Etihad. Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne scored the goals to seal a hard-fought victory. City now have 17 points from our first eight Premier League games and sit third in the table. Given the tough away games we have already negotiated, Pep Guardiola will be quite pleased with that. Elsewhere on Saturday, Manchester United were dismantled by Leicester, Liverpool were sensational in their 5-0 win away at a lacklustre Watford, and Chelsea won 1-0 at Brentford, a ground where plenty of good sides will struggle this season. City are now third in the table, a point behind Liverpool and two adrift of Chelsea. After the game, we heard from the man of the match and our player of the season so far Bernardo Silva, as well as the manager Pep Guardiola. And joining us in the matchday live studio were debutant Trevor Sinclair and club legend Shaun Goater.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. City suffer Group A defeat in Paris | PSG 2-0 City

Tuesday’s Champions League Group A game in Paris didn’t go to plan, with City suffering a 2-0 defeat to PSG. Idrissa Gueye fired the home side into the lead with a fine finish into the top corner, and Lionel Messi scored his first goal for PSG in the second half. But it was by no means one-way traffic. City created plenty and should have scored at least a couple of goals. The City players will be disappointed with the result, but there was plenty in our all-round performance to be pleased about. It was a thoroughly entertaining game between two of the favourites to win the competition. This was City's first Champions League group defeat since September 2018, when we lost 2-1 to Lyon. That was a run of 18 games unbeaten. After the game, we heard from Pep Guardiola, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Nedum Onuoha and Paul Dickov. Pep sets new club record after fine win at Chelsea | Chelsea 0-1 City

City travelled to Chelsea, the early pace setters in the Premier League, and won 1-0. And it was more convincing than the scoreline suggests. City were totally dominant and Gabriel Jesus’ deflected strike was the least we deserved. We were absolutely brilliant. It also marked a special occasion for Pep Guardiola. This was his 221st victory as City boss, which means he’s won more games than any other manager in our history. He’s achieved it in double quick time. Indeed, Les McDowall, who managed 220, did so in a 13-year stint. After the game we spoke to Pep and the matchwinner Jesus – and joining us in the matchday live studio were Nedum Onuoha and Steven McInerney.  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. City hit six in Champions League thriller | City 6-3 RB Leipzig

On an incredible night of Champions League football that saw 20 goals scored across six fixtures, City were involved in a nine-goal thriller. Nathan Ake and Jack Grealish both scored their maiden UCL goals, Riyad Mahrez scored the perfect penalty, Joao Cancelo produced a screamer and Gabriel Jesus continued his fine start to the new season. Ten different players have scored in a City shirt in the past four games and we have now banged in 16 goals in our past three home matches. It was Pep Guardiola’s 300th game in charge of City. He’s now won 219 of them, winning 10 trophies. Incredible stuff.   After the game we heard from Pep, Nathan and Jack - and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Shaun Wright-Phillips and Shaun Goater. Bernardo winner seals fine away win | Leicester 0-1 City

Bernardo silva scored the only goal as City beat Leicester 1-0 at the King Power Stadium - a game city dominated. It’s now three Premier League wins in a row, 11 goals scored, nine different goal scorers and not a single goal conceded. Without a clear out-and-out striker, people have questioned where the goals will come from, but much like last season, we are spreading them around again this time, with so many players contributing. Record breakers! Everton 1-3 City | City set new English football record with 10th-straight win since turn of the year

City have set a new English record of 10 consecutive top-flight league wins at the start of a year! Our 3-1 victory away at Everton means we move clear of Bolton Wanderers, who managed nine league wins in a row at the start of 1904, and Manchester United, who began 2009 with nine on the bounce. Brian Marwood | The Official Man City Podcast

Brian Marwood joins Rob to discuss his career in football. They start by talking about the 1988-89 season when Brian was part of Arsenal’s title-winning side that won the old First Division on the last day of the season, beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield. It remains one of the most dramatic climaxes to a league season ever. After briefly covering his time in marketing at Nike and as a commentator at Sky Sports, they discuss his role in transforming City post-takeover. Brian was key in signing the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Carlos Tevez, players that turned City into one of English football’s best sides. And now, with his focus on the City Football Group, Brian continues to help push City to the forefront of the game. This one is not to be missed! Brian Horton | The Official Man City Podcast

In this episode of the Man City podcast, Rob is in conversation with Brian Horton, City manager between 1993-95. With Peter Reid sacked after just four games of the 1993-94 season, chairman Peter Swales approached Oxford and asked for permission to speak to Brian. He was installed as manager days later, becoming the last managerial appointment of the Swales era. But it was a turbulent period in the Club’s history, with City in a state of civil war as the Swales Out campaign gathered momentum. City’s chairman of 20 years was ousted in February 1994, just six months after Horton came in, replaced by former player Francis Lee. Horton kept City in his first season, with the arrivals of Paul Walsh, Uwe Rosler and Peter Beagrie vital, and the following campaign started superbly, with City managing big wins over Everton, West Ham and, most famously, a brilliant Spurs side, playing a vibrant, attacking brand of football. But that early promise subsided, giving way for a poor second half of the season, and Horton was sacked by Lee as the campaign came to an end. Here, Rob and Brian discuss his time at City, his pursuit of Luis Figo and the bitter nature of his sacking in the summer of 1995. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Dennis Tueart | The Official Man City Podcast

Rob sits down with Dennis Tueart this week at the City Football Academy to discuss his rich and varied career. Tueart has had three stints at City – two as a player and one as a director – giving him a unique perspective of the Club. He joined from Sunderland in 1974 and went on to win the 1976 League Cup, scoring in the final with a brilliant overhead kick that has gone down as one of the all-time great City goals. He left City in 1978 and joined the New York Cosmos, replacing Pele in a star-studded lineup, before returning to City in 1979. During his time as a director, City enjoyed back-to-back promotions under Joe Royle and after a year spent back in the old First Division, established themselves in the Premier League under the guidance of Kevin Keegan. Tueart, as ever, is frank and open as he discusses his life and times. Paul & Joanne Lake | The Official Man City Podcast

Rob sits down with Paul and Joanne Lake to discuss Paul’s career in the game, his injuries and the treatment he received from the Club’s staff during his lowest moments. The pair talk openly about Paul’s struggles with mental health, as well as the process of writing the bestselling book, “I’m Not Really Here,” which neither expected to be so successful. Paul’s story is unique. He was the captain of City in 1990 and there was talk of him leading England, too. Unfortunately, City’s underinvestment in his rehabilitation process meant he had to retire aged just 27, his potential left totally unfulfilled. Now, for the first time, both Paul and Jo discuss his ‘Life of Two Halves’ in gripping detail. Francis Lee | The Official Man City Podcast

In this episode, Rob sits down with one of City’s greatest-ever players: Francis Lee. Lee signed for City in 1967, described by Joe Mercer at the time as “the final piece of the jigsaw”. By the end of his first season, City were crowned champions, with Lee scoring 17 league goals. He left in 1974 having added an FA Cup, a League Cup and a European Cup Winners’ Cup to his list of City successes. In total, he scored 148 goals in 330 matches. He retuned to City in 1994, taking over from the much-maligned Peter Swales as chairman of the club. It was turbulent period, though, and having assumed control with City in the Premier League, he left with relegation to third tier almost certain. Here, at his home in Portugal, he opens up about the effect that time had on him and his family in his first in-depth interview since his time as chairman.
