The Women Poets of Ancient Greece

Natalie is joined by Professors Islam Issa and Edith Hall to tell the story of the great library of Alexandria.  It was included in Alexander the Great's original design for his city, located in the Nile Delta.  Alexandria was to be a city of knowledge.  The founders of the library were ambitious: they wanted nothing less than to collect all the books in the world.  They were willing to pay huge sums, but they were also ruthless and unscrupulous.  The Ptolemies would write to fellow rulers and wealthy friends and ask to borrow their priceless texts.  Then the library would copy the scrolls, and return the copies.  Or alternatively they'd just steal them. Handily, papyrus, the principal reading material of the era, grew in great abundance around Alexandria.  So there was plenty of it for those copies.  Less fortunately, it's extremely flammable. Alexandria: The City

No togas today please.  Natalie celebrates the mid-winter festival of Ancient Rome, Saturnalia.  According to Catullus, it's the 'best of days'.  Expect cross-dressing, sweets, drinking games and the wearing of special pyjamas.  Oh and anarchy and jokes.  Sounds a bit like a Christmas pantomime?  Not surprising, according to veteran pantomime dame André Vincent, who traces the origins of panto back to the fifth century. Early in that same century - late antiquity -  a Roman Christian named Macrobius wrote the most comprehensive extant guide to Saturnalia, which was celebrated in some places, in one way or another, until possibly the eleventh century.You are invited to be part of this festive show which includes gifts for the entire Radio Theatre audience (cue noisy rustling of sweet bags) and the wearing of traditional Saturnalian pointy hats (the 'pileus') to celebrate. Saturnalia

Tacitus is the great historian of imperial Rome.  His writing is beautiful, unsettling, extraordinarily persuasive.  We know many of his likes and dislikes about people and politics, but facts about his personal life?  Not so much.  His memoir of Agricola tells us much fascinating detail about Roman Britain:  that it's an island (the Roman fleet sailed all the way round, just to check), that it's very close to Spain (with only Ireland in between); that invading Anglesey was a great victory for the Romans.  He notes that it rains a lot, but omits to mention the Druids.  He is also, he says, dedicated to writing impartially.  Natalie may disagree.  Who needs evidence when you have Tacitus' persuasive prose?  It's not as if we can cross-check, because so little of the written record of the time survives to us.  Natalie's guest, (modern) historian Dan Snow, finds this hard to fathom.  Her other guest, Professor Llewelyn Morgan, knows it's unwise to lament the lost work.  We should value what remains and hope that some new bits of Tacitus may appear in the future. And it turns out that by boat, Britain IS actually close to Spain. Aphrodite

Cleopatra

Livia was the first Empress of Rome, a faithful wife, excellent friend and trusted advisor.  So why is she still best known as a serial killer?Natalie is joined by guests Dr Emma Southon and Professor Llewelyn Morgan to discuss the life of Livia.  Her marriage to the Emperor Augustus (Octavian) was a love-match.  They were both married to other people when they first met, but that didn't last long, despite the added complication of her pregnancy and existing child. The family was unlucky in losing many members to untimely death, and Livia seems often to have got the blame, however unreasonably. Livia

Athene is charismatic and bloodthirsty, goddess of wisdom, war and...handicrafts. 
 
Owl-eyed Athene is not interested in love, although she is very fond of the hero Odysseus and gives him a leg-up whenever she can.  War is Athene's thing, the bloodier the better. She's perfectly happy to humiliate and degrade her enemies, including the feisty and talented weaver Arachne, who challenges Athene to a weaving competition.  Athene loves a scrap so it's game on: looms at dawn.  She weaves a depiction of her own glorious success over Poseidon in the battle for Attica. Arachne creates a tapestry which shows scenes of gods tricking, seducing, assaulting and kidnapping mortal women.  Her message is that the 'protection' of the gods is not worth the cost. Athene

Natalie tells the powerful and painful story of Demeter's fight to get justice for her daughter Persephone.  Hades conspires with his siblings Zeus and Gaia to abduct Persephone and force her to live with him in the underworld as his wife.  Many versions of this story are sanitized for children but the original is not.  It is clear that Persephone is tricked and trafficked, that she hates and fears Hades and never becomes accustomed to life among the dead.  And that her mother Demeter is furious and grief-stricken.  The light is gone from Demeter's life and consequently from the world: crops fail and the people starve.  It's only now that Zeus takes note of her pleas to get Persephone back. Demeter

Epigrams, jokes, highly-polished poems in praise of the Emperor.  Oh, and absolute filth.  These are what made the name of the first-century Roman poet Martial.
  
It has taken nearly two thousand years for Martial's work to be considered a fit subject for study by classicists.  His poems to the Emperor may have been as highly crafted as a Fabergé egg, but nestled beside these jewels, in the same volume, were works of 'incomprehensible obscenity'.  The Romans loved both, apparently.  His work is still funny, and still shocking. Spartan Women

It seems that classical scholars are wrong about the date of the volcanic eruption that destroyed the ancient city of Pompeii almost two thousand years ago.  It's taken a few ripe pomegranates and some squashed grapes, carbonised by pyroclastic flow, to change our minds about this UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The eruption was definitely in the year 79, but the month?  Most written sources mistakenly suggest it was August but if you know your fruit, you will know that pomegranates and grapes ripen in the autumn in Italy.  So the presence of these fruit in the remains of the city suggest the eruption must have taken place later in the year.Natalie draws on the blisteringly dramatic account of the disaster by Pliny the Younger, writing to his friend, the historian Tacitus.   She talks to archaeologist Dr Sophie Hay, who has spent nineteen years living and working in Italy and is a leading expert on the site.  There are poignant details: many bodies discovered there were carrying keys, because people expected to be able to return to their homes once the eruption had subsided. After all he sacrifices one of their daughters to Artemis without a second thought and then turns up at home years later with Cassandra, the future-seeing woman he has 'won' as a prize (also read: trafficked and enslaved) at the Battle of Troy.  These actions demonstrate a certain lack of respect for his wife, as well as cruelty of the highest order.   Cassandra reads the room, obviously, but nobody listens to her.  Clytemnestra has a good legal brain and states her case convincingly. But it's unlikely to end well.With Professor Edith Hall.

Pandora is made from clay and given a lovely silvery dress by Athene, and from her all women are descended.  Once her jar is opened by Epimetheus (he was warned! but he didn't listen), and all the evil flies out, then mankind's carefree life is at an end.  So, not really Pandora's fault at all. Orpheus charms Persephone with his music into allowing him to attempt a rescue from Hades, but on the journey back he must promise not to look behind him, to check Eurydice is following. Natalie tells the story of Suetonius,  biographer of the Caesars and friend of Pliny the Younger.  She's joined by guests Professor Llewelyn Morgan and biographer and journalist Anita Anand.
Classical knowledge is fragile: so much is lost.  We don't know, for example, when Julius Caesar was born.  What we do know about the Caesars is largely because of  Suetonius.  And some of it is quite strange.  Who knew that experts in Latin grammar were once the coolest of the cool?  That Domitian wrote a treatise on hair care?  That Augustus kept a bust of Hadrian in his office and used hot nuts to soften the hair on his thighs?  (Please don't try this at home).  Fellow biographer Anita Anand knows - like Suetonius - that writing about the long-dead is probably sensible if you want to stay out of trouble, but she still found herself in international hot water after her book on the Koh-i-Noor diamond (co-written with William Dalrymple) was published.
