We Are Reach

Film number four in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Thor, and we've come a long way from Tony Stark's cave in Afghanistan. All the way to Asgard, in fact, as the bounds of the MCU expand even at this early stage to embrace other worlds, mythical beings, and stuff happening somewhere in the gap between endless space and affordable CG. THERE IS A LOT GOING ON. The MCU gets its first supervillain, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddlestone launch mega careers, a blue box turns up, and Marvel seems to prove once and for all that you can keep making films that are only OK so long as there's another film that might be better just around the corner...Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! Three episodes into our MCU series and we’ve already got our first sequel - 2010’s Iron Man 2 - which Marvel couldn’t resist making after the success of the original. Robert Downey Jr returns as Tony Stark, facing off against both Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash and the age-old conundrum of what do you do with a superhero after their origin story? The MCU Phase One - Iron Man 2 (2010)

Hello and welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a podcast about fandom and watching movies with friends. We’re doing it! We’re getting through Phase One of the MCU, and today that means our opinion lens is focused on 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, a complicated entry in that it came out mere months after Iron Man, features a star in Edward Norton who never returns to the franchise, and is a sort of sequel but not really to 2003’s Hulk directed by Ang Lee. The MCU Phase One - The Incredible Hulk (2008)

The truth is, we are watching Iron Man...Listeners, it's time for a reboot. For Edward Norton to become Mark Ruffalo. For Andrew Garfield to become Tom Holland. For us to have a vision, a quest for the podcast once again. It's time for Redshirt versus the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In what we're enigmatically calling Phase Three of the podcast, we’ll be rewatching the biggest movie phenomenon of all time from its inception to the Avengers’ first Assembling. Get ready for tons of cultural context, egregious Stan-Splaining, lots of realising we’re older than we used to be, and a weekly check-in on just how full our Marvel fandom Infinity Gauntlets are getting. Welcome Redshirt team, to the final pre-MCU comic book episode before we dive into the world of The Avengers, singularly and collectively. This week, it's Dave's pick, and he has chosen Constantine - although it proves to be more of a case of Constantin-terruptions as Nath and Rob lead us astray (or should that be ashtray?).Don't hold your breath for this one (though weirdly, we do. Batman Returns (1992)

Hello and welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a podcast about fandom and watching movies with friends. We’re about to tackle the big one - the MCU. The biggest movies, the most fervent fandoms, opinions so divisive they could probably splint a continent in half and sink the entire West coast of America. Which, coincidentally, is Lex Luthor’s plan in Superman: The Movie - the film we’re watching today to kick off our three-part mini series of pre-MCU superhero flicks before we take on the main event. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We’ve watched ALL the Christopher Nolan films apartfromTheFollowing, and now we’re going full white guy podcast by RANKING THEM ALL. Will you agree with us? We don’t even agree with ourselves! Mail Bwaarg & Christopher Nolan RANKINGS

Hello and welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a podcast about fandom and watching movies with friends. Today, it’s Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s multi-award-winning 2023 biopic of the man who made the bomb. Best Picture. Best actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Director for Nolan himself. But can it win the less-prestigious but harder-to-obtain award for entertaining all three of the Redshirt Cinema Club hosts? Let’s find out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Oppenheimer (2023)

The end of our Nolan series approaches, as you can tell by the fact we've reached a film that doesn't care about beginnings, or endings, or - more than one of us might argue - what happens in the middle, either. This week we're watching/have watched/will have been about to be watching Tenet, which is like a time-based counterpart to the globe-spanning, dream-plumbing action of Inception. Not content with simply folding Paris back upon itself, Tenet goes one further and folds all of reality, with a war of annihilation moving back along the timeline from the future and about to engulf the present. What does this mean? On the one hand, we sincerely have no idea. On the other, it means bullets that fire backwards, fight scenes between opponents moving in contrary directions through time, car chases where both cars pursue each other at the same time(s), and a final assault that's finished before it begins.Obviously, Bill and Ted would have had this wrapped up in 90 minutes. But what else do we make of Tenet? Join us to find out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Tenet (2020)

We’re nearing the end of our Nolan run now, and we’re heading for the stars - or at least a handful of uninhabitable planets and a wormhole or two - with 2014’s Interstellar. A movie less about space and rockets than it is about love, regret, parenthood and just how much of a dick Matt Damon can be if the script is right. Does it get the Redshirt seal of approval? Time to find out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Interstellar (2014)

Check out our Nolan-esque use of non-linear plotting as we interrupt our chronological journey through the films of Christopher N to take in the director's newly released epic, The Odyssey. Praise Zeus, we did it! We got Rob to the cinema, and he stayed there until the film was over. But what did he - and Nath, and Dave - make of this take on Homer's epic tale? Even more crucially, how did Dave - a man who runs a social media agency specialising in the entertainment industry - manage to watch this extensively marketed film without even knowing who was in the cast? How does it compare to Nolan's other epic big screen adventures? And can it possibly compete with the Ducktales version of the story from the episode 'Home Sweet Homer,' which features duck sirens?Find out by simply listening to this podcast - or risk the wrath of Podseidon!Nolan mailbag is coming - join in and email your thoughts, questions and opinions to redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.comMeanwhile the rest of the schedule for RSCC's Nolan summer looks like this:Dunkirk (Patreon-exclusive) - 22nd JulyTenet - 27th JulyOppenheimer - 3rd AugustCaptain's Choice - 5th August (Patreon-exclusive)Batmail Begin Hosted on Acast. The Odyssey (2026)

Inception is the next film under the Redshirt Cinema Club spotlight, the cerebral 2010 sci-fi action movie Christopher Nolan somehow made in-between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. It’s generated memes and hot takes galore since then, with audiences loving to hate it as much as they love to… love it. On which side of the fence do we fall? It’s time to find out! Hosted on Acast. Inception (2010)

Most people would probably have a break between making two blockbusting superhero movies, especially when they're as brilliant and ambitious as Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). Not Christopher Nolan. Instead he teamed up with Christian Bale and knocked out The Prestige (2006), a cerebral character drama following two feuding magicians and their shared obsession with outdoing the other. Stylistically it's an outlier when looked at in the context of his wider catalogue, but there's a reason Nolan connoisseurs often cite this as their favourite. What will we make of it however? Let's find out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Prestige (2006)

Hello and welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a podcast about - finally - BATMAN movies. Well it is for today anyway, as we tackle Christopher Nolan’s 2005 comic book blockbuster Batman Begins, the film that arguably made both him and lead-actor Christian Bale household names and kickstarted a superhero trilogy still regarded by many as the greatest ever. How does it hold up 21 years later? It’s time to find out. Podcast Begin. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Batman Begins (2005)

Today we continue our journey through the movies of Christopher Nolan with 2002's Insomnia, the comparatively little-known film he made between Memento (cult favourite, liking it makes you sound clever) and Batman Begins (the first chapter of everyone's favourite superhero trilogy). The cast is stacked with A-list talent - Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank will get your movie noticed - and yet Insomnia rarely gets talked about with the same fervour as Nolan's other work. We'll explore why in this episode, alongside chat about how smoking and telephones are cool and Matt Damon isn't. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Insomnia (2002)

It's finally happened. We're giving the world not the podcast it deserves but the one it needs right now. And what the world needs is a movie podcast where three early-middle-aged straight, white guys talk about Christopher Nolan films.First up is Memento, Nolan's critically-acclaimed mainstream debut from 2000 that - despite its raw, indie feel - carries itself with the artistic swagger of a surefire summer hit. Within it you can already see a few Nolan trademarks: a non-traditional narrative structure and a preoccupation with time (and how we always seem to be running out of it). Is the film as good as we remember? Let's jump in and find out...We're not just doing this for the sake of it, however. The Odyssey hits cinemas on 17th July, the kind of summer blockbuster that's become increasingly rare and upon which so many of our most cherished movie memories have been made. So we're watching Nolan's films in the run up to release, followed by the Greek epic itself. Please watch along with us and email your thoughts, questions and opinions to redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.comThe schedule for RSCC's Nolan summer looks like this:Memento - 8th JuneThe Mandalorian and Grogu (Patreon-exclusive) 10th JuneInsomnia - 15th JuneBatman Begins - 22nd JuneThe Dark Knight (Patreon-exclusive) - 24th JuneThe Prestige - 29th JuneInception - 6th JulyTBC Captain's Choice/The Dark Knight Rises (Patreon-exclusive) 8th JulyInterstellar - 13th JulyThe Odyssey - 20th JulyDunkirk (Patreon-exclusive) - 22nd JulyTenet - 27th JulyOppenheimer - 3rd AugustCaptain's Choice - 5th August (Patreon-exclusive) Hosted on Acast. Super Mailbag Bros

This week on Redshirt Cinema Club it’s the turn of 2002’s Resident Evil, an adaptation of the survival horror videogame that spawned a series of actually quite successful films despite never really being that good. Kind of like Fast and the Furious but with zombies instead of cars. Did the first movie convince US, however? Is the Licker scary? And just who is Milla Jovovich supposed to be? We’ll answer at least two of those questions in this episode.Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Today we continue our videogame adaptation season by tackling 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, an early-noughties action flick starring megastar Angelina Jolie in the lead role, alongside pre-Bond Daniel Craig, a very young and very handsome Iain Glen and also Chris Barrie from Red Dwarf. Can it be the first videogame movie we’ve watched that isn’t terrible? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week it's time for Pokémon: The First Movie. Rob is a lifelong is a lifelong Pokéfan while Nath and Dave are bemused onlookers ready to receive a heartwarming introduction to the world of collecting, training, and trying your best. Which is a shame because what they actually get is an existential nightmare dressed as a children's adventure. What does it mean to be alive? What is the purpose of existing? For you, the day our episode on Street Fighter graced your village was the most important day in your life. But for us? It was Monday.Welcome back to our continuing series on video game movies, where this week we have reached the garish, often nonsensical, somehow still wonderfully entertaining Street Fighter from 1994. Several pillars of the game have been turned upside down - Guile is the main character, Ken and Ryu are low-level conmen, and Blanka wasn't even raised by eels - but thankfully Raoul Julia's M Bison is staggeringly good fun, and we have our FIRST EVER podcast guest in the shape of frequent anecdote-featurer and childhood Street Fighter enthusiast, Matt Elliott. Kicking off our season on videogame adaptation we've got the notoriously awful Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993. Yes, the one that doesn't look anything like the Mario games and instead feels like if Blade Runner had dinosaurs and was directed by an idiot (or two idiots as it turns out).It does star Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper though, and despite the critical and commercial failure is still a film remembered fondly by many. How will it fare in the Redshirt opinion cauldron? Listen on to find out! Here's how our schedule is shaping up for the next month:- Super Mario Bros. This week we’re delving into our mailbag to mark the end of our series on 80s fantasy movies (you can tell because people only “delve” in fantasy settings) and to share your nostalgia, nit-picks, and at least one bit of trivia - about David Bowie in Labyrinth - that blew our tiny goblin minds. If you've been listening along to our journey through this decade's unique haul of fantasy films - Time Bandits, Highlander, Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, The Princess Bride, Willow - then listen in as we sort through your comments and criticisms. There's also some talk about what we'll be watching next, as we begin to formulate our Grand Videogame Adaptation Plan. The Neverending Mailbag

This week - we’re falling through holes in the universe and landing in Time Bandits, Terry Gilliam’s visually cacophonous 1981 adventure about a small boy careening through time with a band of thieves pursued by God and evil itself. There’s… a lot going on. It's possible that Time Bandits features the best backstory to a heist ever conceived (a band of God's minor manufacturers are sent to the repairs department for creating a very unusual tree, and use the map of all the holes in the universe ("it was a rush job, seven days...") to steal things instead of fixing the fabric of... everything. It's for absolute certain that it's another slightly-too-scary-for-kids-but-actually-great-as-an-adult adventure, and another glimpse into what Sean Connery was up to after that whole Bond deal. Did we like it? Time Bandits (1981)

A curious phenomenon emerges this week as we watch 1984's The Neverending Story. It's a favourite from Dave's childhood which Nath and Rob were convinced they'd never seen. The evidence in fact points to them both having watched the film previously and entirely forgotten what happens, which is unfortunately also true of this latest rewatch (something to do with a sad horse and a flying dog, the details are lost to us).Which is all to say that The Neverending Story has a strange energy - a tinge of Euro-weirdness, the half-logic of children elected heroes in the face of magical annihilation, and an episodic structure full of grotesque puppets and special effects. We love it! We've forgotten it. It makes us sad.Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. The Neverending Story (1984)

This week we’re losing ourselves again in the delightful maze of 80s fantasy, with Jim Henson’s extraordinary Labyrinth (which, like our very own Rob, turns 40 this year...)Think of it less like a museum of childhood traumas, and more like a fun adventure with cool puppets and a brilliant - nay, magical - dance number. Now if we only figure out how to get inside…Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Mailbag IV: The NeverEnding Illness

A new season begins, and we transition from our favourite genre (sci-fi) into our other favourite genre (fantasy) quicker than turning the corner in Waterstones' basement. Moving from Star Wars into 1988's Willow felt like the most natural step - it's directed by Ron Howard (of Solo fame), stars Warwick Davies (Wicket the ewok) and has a story dreamed up by George Lucas himself. There are other parallels, most notably the roguishly handsome Han Solo-esque swordsman Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and wonderfully crafted stop-motion monsters, but really who needs an excuse to sit through a bunch of classic 80s fantasy movies for the next few weeks? If you fancy watching along with us, here is our schedule for the next month. Consider joining our brand new 'Captain' tier on Patreon if you want to vote for what we watch on 1st April. - Willow (1988) - 9th March - Labyrinth (1986) - 16th March - Highlander (1986) - 18th March (Captain and Commander bonus episode) - The NeverEnding Story (1985) - 23rd March - Time Bandits (1981) - 30th March - Captains Choice Bonus Episode - 1st April Hosted on Acast. Somehow, Mailbag Returned - Star Wars correspondence and rankings!

We conclude our Star Wars season with 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, J.J. Abrams' second stab at the franchise having kicked off the sequel trilogy with The Force Awakens 4 years prior.Where the latter was an exercise in replaying familiar hits, Episode IX was all about course correction after the split fan reaction to The Last Jedi. Kylo Ren has his mask back, force ghost Luke likes his light sabre again and Palpatine is back. Somehow. But is the magic back? Contrary to Luke's declaration in The Last Jedi, I'm afraid this one is going to go the way you think.Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

The Last Jedi is almost certainly the most divisive Star Wars movie ever made. A brave attempt by writer/director Rian Johnson to subvert audience expectations and take the franchise in a new direction, it's a film that impressed critics with its brave narrative choices but alienated huge sections of the fan base at the same time. The three of us watched this together at the cinema - Rob enjoyed it, Dave and Nath not so much. Will the subsequent 9 years have softened or sharpened those initial opinions? How do we all feel about that Princess Leia in space scene? And why does Kylo Ren need to take his top off? Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)

"This will begin to make things right."As first lines go, this is powerful stuff. An acknowledgement that what came before wasn't up to scratch. A promise that what you're about to see will bring back the old magic. But does The Force Awakens deliver where it counts? J. J. Abrams is the man with the seemingly impossible task, fresh from reviving (and then killing?) the Star Trek movie franchise, his first film in the new trilogy introduces new characters, revisits old ones, and has an evil base the size of 10 Death Stars. What more could a Star Wars fan want?Admittedly it's tough to watch this film over 10 years later without the following two movies constantly invading your mind like some kind of insidious Force Power, but that's what we've tried to do; watch The Force Awakens with fresh eyes, before conjuring equally fresh opinions. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

The second episode of our mid-season Star Wars break sees Dave finally get his wish of making Rob watch The Green Knight - a dark fantasy retelling of a 14th-century chivalric romance directed by David Lowery and starring Dev Patel. This is unlike any Arthurian legend you've seen before - a twisted, unsettling exploration of honour and the slow, inevitable, irresistible power of nature. It features a bunch of brilliant performances from some of our favourite British actors, from Sean Harris and Ralph Ineson to Kate Dickie and the aforementioned Dev Patel.A weird, dark British fantasy - should be everything Rob likes, right? Let's find out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Green Knight (2021)

In a change to our scheduled programming, this week Rob has forced Dave to watch Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the straight-to-DVD movie sequel to one of the greatest videogames of all time. When it released in 2005 this was an explosion of cutting-edge CG, an all-action burst of fan service fed to an audience ravenous for more Final Fantasy VII. More Cloud, more Sephiroth, more cool fights set to even cooler music.Watching it in 2026 those visuals are starting to creak, which means unfortunately we're actually going to have to judge this film on things like story, pacing and character. Can it stand up to such critique? Will Dave understand anything that's going on? Just what happens when the demands of fervent fandom entice talented game devs to try their hand at the whole movie-making thing? Let's find out!Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005)

We've reached the end of the prequel trilogy with 2005's Revenge of the Sith, a relentless 2.5-hour explosion of lightsabre duels, Palatine one-liners and, well, actual explosions. A film many consider the best of a bad bunch, has the 21 years since its release quietened our misgivings or does the hate still flow through us? We also discuss the very important issues of whether or not The Force works in space and if Anakin's power level would drop once all his arms and legs have come off. So take a seat, young listener. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

So this week we're watching Attack of the Clones. Can we be honest? It feels like we're beset on all sides by inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. And - as Mace Windows might have said in a previous life - we're trying, listeners, we're trying real hard to be the shepherd. Or at least not to go full dark side toxic fandom and spend two hours howling at the moon (wait... that's... whatever). Anyway here are the shoulder-stroking adventures of Anakincel Skywanker and two armies of synthetic soldiers that ends with a climactic battle in a giant sand bowl watched on by an audience of flying ants. Rob actually quite likes it. Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! It's 2026 already? TRY SPINNING OUT ABOUT THE PASSING OF TIME, THAT'S A GOOD TRICKJoin us as we mark this new phase in our enduring existential terror with a rewatch of a film only babies and idiots like - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Actually that's not the tone of the podcast at all. Here at Redshirt Cinema Club we have always tried to be a positive place for fans of all persuasions to enjoy and discuss films. Semi-serious point - not enjoying films in a positive way is something of a lost art in the toxic internet wastelands of (JESUS) 2026. And so watching the Phantom Menace without devolving into a snarking pack of trolls is perhaps our biggest challenge yet (yes, somehow, even bigger than the Hobbit). Can we, like Luke looking into the cold mask of Darth Vader, find the good in the prequels? Can we find something new to say that hasn't been screeched and endlessly echoed already over the last 25 years? And can we get through this podcast without dropping a c-bomb? Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)

It's the concluding chapter of the original Star Wars trilogy this week, as we tackle Return of the Jedi. If you're over 35 this was probably your favourite Star Wars movie as a kid - an action-filled romp across a forest moon, Tatooine and a brand new Death Star. It's got speeder bike chases, Leia in that outfit, and Luke facing off against Darth Vader and the Emperor. What's not to like? The ewoks. The ewoks are not to like, right? We're all agreed? Mail Bag End II - Here At The End Of All 2025 Things

This week we're all enjoying The Empire Strikes Back - Dave's favourite Star Wars film. Rob's favourite Star Wars film. Not Nath's though, but he does still like it. You could describe Empire as the beginning of Star Wars as a 'franchise' - it's a film brimming with confidence, with characters hitting their stride (Darth Vader is definitely evil now and C3PO is a bit nicer) and with ships and set-pieces that would make excellent toys. Then there's that bit - one of the most famous twists in cinema history, a moment that ignited spoiler culture as we know it. Let's dive in!We'll be watching the original Star Wars trilogy followed by the prequel trilogy, all through December and January. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

A long time ago in an office in Bath... we said we'd do a series on Star Wars. Finally, here it is. We start where it all began, with 1977's A New Hope (or simply 'Star Wars' as it was known back then). An un-assuming sci-fi adventure with a cast full of unknowns that director George Lucas thought was going to bomb - so much so that he went on holiday to avoid the noise around its release. What follows is movie history - the biggest film franchise of all time was born. But how does the original measure up to what's come since? How did a simple post production decision transform the entire finale? And is Harrison Ford actually handsome in this one? We discuss all this and more as we move scene-by-scene through the film that started it all. We'll be watching the original Star Wars trilogy followed by the prequel trilogy, all through December and January. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

It's happening - we're about to watch Star Wars on Redshirt Cinema Club, and there will be no-one to stop us this time. Before we rewatch and discuss the first movie, we take a moment to discuss our personal histories with Star Wars, and read about some of yours. Are the three of us Star Wars fans? Which parts of the Star Wars world have we seen, and do we like the best? And exactly how fucking cool did it feel to boost engine power and tear off after an escaping smuggler in TIE Fighter on the PC?The answers to this and many other questions are to be found here. Star Wars: An Introduction - Memories and Mailbag

We conclude our 1985 season with Nath's pick, Terry Gilliam's absurdist dark comedy Brazil, a disturbing vision of what the world might be like if capitalism squeezed every last shred of humanity out of society. Brazil tells us that world would have lots of ducts, and heroic vigilante plumbers played by Robert DeNiro.A wonderfully unique, hilarious and harrowing film with a stacked cast, Brazil is a step away from anything we've watched before on the podcast.Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Brazil (1985)

We're continuing our 1985 season this week with Walt Disney oddity, The Black Cauldron. Caught between the classic early decades of Disney animation and the studio's 1990s resurgence, The Black Cauldron is an unusually dark (and unusually British) adventure, with moments of dread and horror mixed in with the odd and unfathomable (magic pigs, hairy little thieves, gruesome self-sacrifice). Clearly, it struck a chord with young Rob, who grew up loving fantasy stories, and who picked this for our 1985 season. Enjoy, let us know what you think of the film, and join us next week for more 1985 oddness with Terry Gilliam's Brazil. Back To The Future! Our 1985 season begins in earnest this week with Dave's pick of the year, Robert Zemeckis' layered, heartfelt time-travelling adventure (although do go and listen to our Goonies bonus episode if you can...)BTTF is a perfect fit with several films the pod has already absorbed, a "Spielberg-ing" of early 1980s life that like ET (and The Goonies) presents a world beset by adult problems to which only children have the answers. Dense with physical gags and cultural references, and tightly plotted around its time travel premise, we are in the presence of another absolute classic. Back To The Future (1985)

We're taking a long overdue look inside the Redshirt Cinema Club mailbag this week (please keep emailing us, we do read them, promise) before kicking off our new mini season by each selecting our favourite movie of 1985, in celebration of the year Dave was born. This has caused alarm for a couple of reasons: firstly it's made us realise a number of our favourite movies are now, like Dave, 40 years old and secondly it turns out Rob has only seen two movies released in this year. Man is the warmest place to hide this week, as our John Carpenter mini-season comes to a spectacular, gushing climax with 1982’s The Thing. Is Jed the dog the best dog actor ever? John Carpenter - The Thing (1982)

Hello and welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a weekly podcast about smoking, apparently.  In the distant future of the year 1997, Manhattan has become a super prison, the president of the USA has crash landed inside, and only one man has tight enough trousers and good enough arms to break him out again. John Carpenter - Escape From New York (1981)

Halloween has come early, which is only fair as two of us are coming very late to Halloween, John Carpenter's genre-setting 1978 teen slasher classic. The adults are all busy at boring grown-up parties, the teens are constantly on the phone and swapping houses, and Michael Myers - inscrutable killer, embodiment of evil, and provider of cheap Halloween costume options for several generations - has been to the hardware store and is ready to work. John Carpenter - Halloween (1978)

Welcome to Los Angeles in 1976, setting for John Carpenter’s Assault On Precinct 13, a tale of bad gangs, good guys, and a tragically mishandled ice cream order. This is America and Hollywood as we remember it growing up - a scary, magnetic clash of morals and modernity. And also lots of shooting. Yes, this week we're watching John Carpenter's second film, where a criminal gang lays siege to a handful of survivors trapped inside an abandoned police station. Immaculate vibes, incredible music, and a absolute sense of right and wrong. John Carpenter - Assault On Precinct 13 (1976)

A new dawn! A new day! A new Dark Star!Welcome to a brand new series on Redshirt Cinema Club, as we embark upon a vaguely Halloween-timed viewing of the early films of John Carpenter. There are so many reasons this run of films fits with what we've watched on the pod so far, not least the fact that several of these films are very good. We're starting this week with Carpenter's first film, Dark Star, co-created with eventual Alien writer Dan O'Bannon, and a teasing love letter to mid-century science fiction. John Carpenter - Dark Star (1974)

We've reached the finale of Alien: Earth! This week we discuss episode 8, 'The Real Monsters'.The journey has ended, and have we been walking in a circle this whole time? The hybrid kids use soft(ware) power to launch a coup, we finally get to see that Morrow vs Kirsh showdown, the orchid escapes, and Johnny Eyeball finds a new home. Are we happy? Nearly. Alien: Earth - Episode 8 'The Real Monsters'

This week - episode 7 of Alien: Earth, 'Emergence'. Things are happening, Fletch - many of them bad, especially for any humans remaining on the Neverland island complex in possession of a moral compass. Slightly and Smee become body smugglers, Wendy and Nibs feel their humanity slipping away, and Morrow does an actual invasion. Oh, and the alien got out. It's all a bit much for us, as our the first really significant cracks appear in our confidence that all these fabulous ideas are going to land, somehow. Well, we've been wrong before...Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Alien: Earth - Episode 7 'Emergence'

After the brilliant episode 5 we return to Neverland for Alien: Earth episode 6 as events ramp up for the season finale. Wendy is transfixed by a now-adolescent Xenomorph, Slightly is desperate for a human to get face-hugged and that sheep with an alien eye ball is definitely planning something. Meanwhile Kirsh continues his observations while Boy Kavalier and Yutani enjoy an amicable business meeting. Does this episode live up to the standards of what came before? Let's find out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Alien: Earth - Episode 6 'The Fly'

Episode 5 of Alien: Earth takes us back to the beginning. We wondered when we'd see the crew of the Maginot again and here they are, revealed in all their flawed, incompetent glory. An episode that details how we got from the first 10 minutes of episode 1 (everyone wakes up and banters over breakfast) to 20 minutes later in episode 1 (everyone dies). It's classic Alien basically - a crew of increasingly panicked humans being picked off one-by-one, either by deadly extra-terrestrials or their own stupidity. We also learn more about the backstory of Security Officer Morrow, plus a dramatic twist reveals the true cause of the Maginot's 'accidental' plummet into Prodigy territory on Earth. It's one heck of an episode and sets things up nicely for the final three episodes of the season. Alien: Earth - Episode 5 'In Space, No One...'

It's time for episode four of Alien: Earth, 'Observations'. Which is apt because there's a lot of observing going on: Wendy in the lab, Boy Kavalier watching Joe, Dame Cynthia watching Nibs (...fly across the room), and the eyeball squid monster watching everyone at once, from inside a sheep. We also observe that the show is turning out to be less interested in aliens and more interested in transhumanism - we can tell because it says so out loud, through the mouth of Ade Edmonson - and also that it is one step ahead of us in terms of its references and subtext. What happens to metatextual framing when your antagonist starts doing it out loud in the show itself? Something extra clever and exciting, probably. More tangibly we discuss how Alien: Earth is beginning to move and position its pieces for the second half of the series. What's going to happen next? We literally don't know! It's so exciting!Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Alien: Earth - Episode 4 'Observations'

It's time for episode three of Alien: Earth, and the title of the episode is 'Metamorphosis'. Which is a reference to our showgirl, of course, but also the Lost Boys, Morrow, and humanity itself in this show about making machines, becoming machines, putting children into machines ("this is fine" - the ethics board, distractedly), and sometimes thinking about machines when an alien comes along and tail-whips you into cutlets. Turn and face the strange, children. Which reminds us - that spinning eye octopus is back this week, certainly in the thoughts of Nibs. Other areas of discussion include Wendy and Joe's fight with a xenomorph (whose Opta stats take a beating this episode), Smee and Slightly saying "bro", Kirsh vs Morrow, Blade Runner vibes, and the fact we're suddenly all really bloody excited about where this show is going.Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Alien: Earth - Episode 3 'Metamorphosis'

This week we're beginning our series on Alien: Earth. Having watched the Alien film series in its entirety at the end of last year, we are perfectly prepared, poised like an apex predator, and above all really bloody excited to embark upon a full, week-by-week viewing of the new FX series, Alien: Earth. Alien: Earth has been created and overseen by Noah Hawley, the creator of TV shows Legion and Fargo, both of which are a careful mix of faithfulness and creativity - exactly the qualities we, over the course of many podcasts, have identified as crucial to the best IP storytelling. Join us this week to discuss the double episode opener, and then every Monday to discuss new episodes in the series. Alien: Earth - Episodes 1 and 2

This week we’re watching 2014’s Edge Of Tomorrow.Welcome to our final episode in this mini-series about genre movie that we love from an era - of Marvel dominance - that we don’t. Our film this week is Nath's pick and he's gone for Edge Of Tomorrow, a criminally under-appreciated time-loop sci-fi packed with action, humour, and nasty aliens. Edge Of Tomorrow - Genre Pick: Nath Edition

Continuing our journey through excellent genre movies of the Marvel era, this week we're watching Dave's pick - Dredd (2012). Directed by Peter Travis, written by Alex Garland and starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Heady, this no-nonsense sci-fi romp is all action, one-liners and impossible chins - a brutal if uncomplicated look at what the world might be like if everything became a massive city with all the bad guys living in fortified tower blocks.Don't worry about whether that's a bit problematic and just enjoy the ride.Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Dredd - Genre Pick: Dave Edition

This week we're watching Hereditary (2018). Inspired by a recent listener comment, we're pausing our negativity around Marvel-era filmmaking and instead focusing on the positives. We've each picked one (1) genre from the broadly defined Marvel Era (roughly 2010 onwards) to celebrate smart, commercial movies. We're starting with Rob's pick, Ari Aster's horror debut, Hereditary. Poor Dave, poor that bird, poor everyone in the film. Try to watch ahead of listening - the spoilers are deep and immediate - and please enjoy this wild, grief-filled ride with us. We've run out of adventures to have with Indiana Jones, which just leaves our official (scientific, archaeological) ranking of the five Indy movies, and a deep dive - an excavation, if you will - of our Redshirt mailbag to hear your thoughts and answer your questions about Mr Jones (Jr). Topics covered include how Temple Of Doom was actually received in India, embarrassing bits of films to watch with family, the enduring popularity of Large Men on screen, and what's next for Redshirt Cinema Club!Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Indiana Jones - Film Ranking and Mailbag!

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is probably going to be the last Indiana Jones film they ever make. And on paper it's got everything an Indie film needs - a globe-trotting hunt for a long-lost artifact, Nazis (one of whom is really massive), a strong-willed female lead, an inexplicably competent child and a jaunt into the paranormal that just about hangs-on to the cliff of feasibility. It's also got a de-aged Harrison Ford, leaping about like it's 1989.But does James Mangold's 2023 adventure have the magic? Something tells me opinions are going to be split... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Nineteen years after his supposed last crusade, Harrison Ford is back as Indiana Jones; older, wiser and up against aliens and Russians this time. Marion is back and also along for the ride is Mutt - Shia LaBeouf's renegade greaser who's inexplicably good at fencing and swinging on vines. Does Spielberg's 2008 digital-age sequel capture the magic of the original trilogy? You probably know the answer to that, but listen along anyway. It will be fun. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

It's time for The Last Crusade! (Until the other two - which we don't talk about, unless we're making podcasts about them). Indiana Jones is back doing what he does best - punching Nazis, saving loved ones, and somehow doubting the existence of the divine despite being on-site when a biblical artifact melted a squad of German troops. This time he's after the sippy cup of Jesus H Christmas himself, the holy grail of archaeological finds - the actual Holy Grail. Oh and his father, whose academic rigour and emotional distance colour in acres of Indy's backstory. Our Indy adventure continues with The Temple Of Doom, a sequel that's both darker and sillier than the original. Because what do kids like better than human sacrifice and seeing their heroes go evil? Rawdog heart amputation and an army of slave children of course. Thank you Mr Spielberg!Despite or quite probably because of all this, Temple Of Doom is Rob's favourite Indy film. Will he still feel the same having watched it as an adult? And can he convince the others that this is more than a smirking retread? Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom

Welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a weekly podcast about watching movies with friends. And this week - what a movie. We’re starting a brand new series with Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark - a powerful nostalgic swirl of magic, memories, and unmissable quotes for Nath and Dave, and 90 minutes of wishing we were talking about The Mummy instead for Rob. I guess he never went to Sunday school…Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark

Before we dive into the opinion snake pit that will be this podcast after we watch the Indiana Jones series, we decided to each rank our personal top five Spielberg movies and go to bat for them in this bonus episode. From sharks, aliens and dinosaurs to World War II and apocalyptic sci-fi, it's hard to argue against Spielberg as the most important and influential filmmaker in cinema history. Hosted on Acast. Our Top 5 Steven Spielberg Movies (Commander Tier Exclusive)

We’ve been telling Rob for years that he reminds us of Michael Douglas’ at-breaking-point character from Falling Down. This week - to celebrate the podcast turning one year old - we sat down to watch the film, and regretted saying that almost immediately. Though we did find plenty to admire in this still alarmingly relevant violent urban rampage. Join us to find out why. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Mailbag! Secret Welsh Jurassic Park premiere & picking the bones of 1991

Hello and welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a weekly podcast about dads, pirates, and humungous fairies.Rounding off our rewatch of our individual picks for the best film of 1991, this week Dave's choice takes us to Neverland, and to Steven Spielberg's Hook. We all know that the core of Peter Pan's story is that he never grew up. What this high concept follow-up to the classic children's tales presupposes is... what if he did? What will we make of this awkward, occasionally magical movie? Is this one of Steven Spielberg's rare misses? And how did Peter Pan decide to run away if he was just a baby? Seriously though, because he couldn't walk, or even understand about growing up at that point, and how did he stop being a baby one he got to Neverland? We have questions. The Best Of 1991 - Hook

Hello and welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a weekly podcast about robots that become our dad.  This week we continue our series on the best films 1991 with Rob's number one pick, Terminator 2: Judgement Day. This is James Cameron's sequel to his own 1984 noirish tech thriller, this time broadened into a family-friendly blockbuster in line with the career trajectory of its star, bad robot turned good robot, Arnold Schwarzenegger. What will we make of this universally lauded action landmark? How will it fit into our ongoing discussions about machine sentience and artificial life? And what on earth are Rob and Nathan bickering about? The Best Of 1991 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Hello and welcome to Redshirt Cinema Club, a weekly podcast about robbing the rich, and storing the proceeds in an elaborate tree house.  This week we begin our series on our individual picks for the best film of 1991, starting with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Objectivity is going out the window, Robin Hood is coming back the other way, and everyone is having the best time. Except Rob. The Best Of 1991 - Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves

The first of our retrospective mini-seasons focuses on the movies of 1991. Why? I think because Nath just wanted an excuse to talk about Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, but also it gives us the opportunity to each rank our top ten movies of the year and who doesn't love a ranking. We'll be watching each host's number 1 pick over the next three weeks, plus a community-voted movie for one of May's bonus episodes. Our Top 10 Movies of 1991

Why do people keep going back to that island filled with dinosaurs? In the case of Jurassic Park 3 it's to a) save a missing boy and b) witness how much cleverer velociraptors have got. They can talk now! Set traps! And pretend to be statues! Not to be outdone by the newly introduced Spinosaurus which swallows a phone and proceeds to announce itself with a ringtone, like some monstrous version of Peter Pan's crocodile. Can the returning Sam Neill as Alan Grant prevent both this new gang of hapless humans from being eaten and also this movie from being rubbish? Let's find out!Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! Jurassic Park III

The Lost World? They've only found it. How do you follow up a groundbreaking blockbuster that rewrote the rules of action cinema with a t-rex and three velociraptors? With TWO t-rexes and SIX velociraptors of course. The lads at InGen remember they left a massive island full of dinosaurs on simmer when a child's face is eaten, so they convince the world's premier open-shirted mathematician to return and ineffectually tell everyone that chaos will ensue. The Lost World: Jurassic Park

A brand new series is upon us! One with miraculous dinosaurs, underhand IT contractors, and perilous adventure. Throughout April we'll be revisiting the original Jurassic Park trilogy, beginning with Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking 1993 original. The movie is a firm podcast favourite, especially for Rob and Dave, but will the film's standard-setting digital effects hold up? Has the early-90s tech-terror storytelling aged? And why, after all this time, does nobody care about Dodgson? Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! Jurassic Park

This really is it! The end of the Matrix series so far. Morpheus has died in a game you didn't play and Hugo Weaving was doing some theatre so Agent Smith has a new face. But the big news is that Neo is alive, somehow, and trapped in a new Matrix devoted to nodding self-referentially at the old one, while Trinity has become just a regular, Ducatti-riding, Hollywood hot mom of two regular kids. Join us! As we discuss why two of us... actually like this film now? Even though it's sentimental, overly self-aware, and Neo can't kick as high as he used to. Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! The Matrix Resurrections

This is it! The end of the Matrix series, until they made another one. With Neo trapped in a cybercoma and strapped on a gurney next to a man doing a cartoonish Hugo Weaving impression, WHO will be available to speak to the big machine face and force a ceasefire before the squids interrupt the eternal raving of Zion? It barely matters.Join us as we discuss what is supposed to be happening in this film, who won at the end, and why two members of the Redshirt Cinema Club somehow prefer this to Reloaded.Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! Mailbag - The end of our David Lynch series

Our David Lynch mini-season comes to a close with 2001's Hollywood nightmare, Mulholland Dr. Like Twin Peaks, Mulholland Dr started life as a pilot for an ABC TV series, but became a self-contained puzzle of a film when that pilot was rejected. The resulting movie is part-Cinderalla story, part noir throwback, and part artful commentary on the power dynamics and hidden spaces of the dream factory of Hollywood. What will Rob and Dave make of one of Nath's favourite films ever? David Lynch - Mulholland Dr

Our journey through the works of David Lynch brings us to Twin Peaks, the hit 1990 TV phenomenon that's influenced everything from Alan Wake to Stranger Things and still loved and talked about 35 years on. The thing Lynch made, alongside writer Mark Frost, around which a genuine fandom was born - people travel to the real life Great Northern Hotel for coffee and cherry pie. But what will we make of it? David Lynch - Twin Peaks

Our season celebrating and exploring the films of David Lynch continues with 1986's Blue Velvet. What a pairing with last week's film, Dune - the same director, star, and producer bring us a film of vastly different scope, and unique perspective. Blue Velvet is the story of a young man's involvement with a mystery, a dreamy love story interrupted by the rich textures of a sensual nightmare. David Lynch - Blue Velvet

Join us as we begin a new season of David Lynch movies with 1984's Dune. Dune has already featured in the podcast, as part of the creative tangle that helped define sci-fi cinema in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and saw the inception of Alien and Blade Runner. Now, as we embark upon a mini-series focused on the works of the recently passed David Lynch, we're watching Dune itself.Let's be real - Nath is in his element, Dave is up for the challenge, and Rob doesn't have a clue what's happening. David Lynch - Dune

It's gone. It's done. We complete our journey through Middle-earth with The Battle Of The Five Armies, a film Rob has never seen, and Nathan wouldn't mind having never seen. Listen, the chances of us suddenly loving the Hobbit movies and this becoming a triumphant ending are slim to none. But... climactic things are in the air. Armies are marching. Deep lore is waking from its slumber. Somewhere, the eagles are doing some stretches. Maybe, just maybe, we'll come out of this with more fondness for the Hobbit trilogy than we came in with. The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies

If Rob watches one more minute, this will be the most Hobbit movie he's ever seen...We're marching on with our unexpected adventure, which this week means watching the second of Peter Jackson's Hobbit films, The Desolation of Smaug. Rob has only seen half of this film before, leaving the cinema back in 2013 thanks to 48 frames-per-second-induced motion sickness. Nath has seen the whole thing and doesn't like Beorn's sideburns. As January follows Christmas, so too does The Hobbit follow The Lord of the Rings. A thump of ice-cold reality after the festive high. It's 12 years since we saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - will the lens of hindsight impact our reaction? Or will the CG orcs, cartoonish action and that scene with the plates prove too great a burden? The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

We've lost count of how many times we've seen The Two Towers, a film Rob reckons he could recite beginning to end (especially the Gollum scenes). As before, there's no fandom experiment going on here - we're simply watching something we all love, occasionally delving into the books and mentioning the Appendices too much. The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers

Welcome, listeners, to a very expected journey - we’re finally taking on Lord Of The Rings. Since The Fellowship Of The Ring was released in 2001, no Christmas has been complete for our hosts without a touch of Tolkien’s world. We’re not trying to convince one of us to like something, or to see if we’re still fans - this is an indulgent way of rewatching something we love dearly and then to babble on about it for ages. It is, as Boromir would say, a gift - a gift to ourselves. Merry us. This episode starts with a short history of director Peter Jackson’s pre-Rings career, after which we go through the film act by act and just enjoy the heck out of it. See you next week for The Two Towers.Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! You asked for it, and we did it - we've watched Galaxy Quest, and we'd like you to join us as we talk about it. In a welcome departure from the bleakness of the Alien universe, in this episode of Redshirt Cinema Club we've delayed our departure for Middle-earth by a week and watched what has been by far our most requested film the affectionate Star Trek parody, Galaxy Quest. All three of us are officially Star Trek fans now, so Galaxy Quest has a lot to live up to. Can this satire deliver in an era when the Next Generation movies were struggling?
