The Crime Desk

Warning: some listeners may find the details of graphic violence in this programme distressing. On the 31st floor of an upmarket block of flats in Hong Kong's energetic Wanchai district, British banker Rurik Jutting brutally killed two Indonesian women in what would become known as one of the city's most notorious killings. Over the space of a few drug- and alcohol-fuelled days, he tortured and killed Sumarti Ningsih, and Seneng Mujiasih before calling the police to let them know what he had done.On this episode of On the Case, we’ll hear from Daily Mail reporter Stephen Wright who travelled to Hong Kong to speak exclusively to John Reading SC about the prosecution of ‘narcissistic' and 'sadistic' investment banker turned torturer and killer Rurik Jutting. On The Case is part of The Crime Desk. The Hong Kong Killer

The notorious Chillenden murders stay long in the memory; Dr. Lin Russell and her six-year-old daughter Megan bludgeoned to death with a hammer. Her other daughter, nine-year-old Josie Russell, survived the attack, but with severe brain injuries. Michael Stone was given three life sentences for the attack but has maintained his innocence for three decades. The case still attracts controversy - lack of any real DNA evidence, a conviction that relied heavily on prison cell testimonies, the theory that a true serial killer was to blame.  The Crime Desk speaks exclusively to Barbara Stone, Michael’s sister, on her long campaign to see justice served for her brother and find out what happened that fateful afternoon. On The Case is part of The Crime Desk. Hammer Horror

Opus Dei, the highly secretive Catholic sect started by the Spanish priest Josemaría Escrivá in the 1920s has its tentacles spread all over the world. They claim it is a deeply religious order that helps ordinary people “love God and serve others through work well done, carried out with honesty and integrity”. Claims against the group accuse it of child grooming, human trafficking, and psychological and emotional control – claims Opus Dei categorically denies. The Crime Desk went undercover into the heart of its north London headquarters and across continental Europe to speak to former members and find out the truth. On The Case is part of The Crime Desk. A Catholic Conspiracy?

Martine Vik Magnussen's body was found hidden under rubble in the basement of a block of flats in Great Portland Street, Marylebone, London, on 16 March 2008. She had been raped and murdered and died as the result of strangulation. Farouk Abdulhak, her one-time friend and who she was last seen with on the night of her death, is the son of billionaire and one of Yemen's wealthiest men Shaher Abdulhak. He is the only suspect in the case. In our inaugural episode, host Alex Matthews is joined by Piri Thirunimalan, senior reporter for The Crime Desk who travelled to Norway to speak exclusively to Martine's father Petter in their family home to talk about his decades long campaign for justice. On The Case is part of The Crime Desk.
