Do It For the Process: For The Artists by Emily Jeffords

Empowering artists to live creatively and to THRIVE while doing so! A Podcast from Emily Jeffords Studio

Emily Jeffords

Most artists get stuck in one of three places.

Pricing (you're either guessing or dreading the question).
Product (you've got one thing to sell and nowhere to go from there).
Or visibility (nobody's finding the work, no matter how good it is).

I'm talking through all three today, including the real story behind a licensing deal I did and how one painting turned into several different ways for someone to actually own it.
We're mid-week in Studio Growth Week, so if you're just now finding this, jump in. There's still time!

Studio Growth Week PART 2 / Pricing, Creating Art that Expands, and Finding Your Community

I graduated from art school with zero clue how to sell a painting. None. So I went to the library, checked out this huge book on the creative industry, and started reading IRS tax codes as if they'd somehow explain my life to me. They, in fact, did not.
What actually worked was slower and messier than that. I kept following whatever felt good, whatever sold, whatever made me a little bit happier, and years later those breadcrumbs turned into an actual path.
That's what this episode is about. And it's also day one of Studio Growth Week, seven free days to help you grow your art business before the rest of the year gets busier.

What Is An Art Career Anyways? // Studio Growth Week PART 1

To be clear, I did not step into a sustainable and profitable studio. No, no, no. Far from it. Welcome to a bit of my origin story. The season in my life when I was quite literally without options, I chose to rely on my art. And it worked.
I've been talking quite a lot recently with people online about the notion that artists are starving and how that, quite literally, does not make sense. We're all out here making it and doing our best, and many of us are doing quite well!
Part of the work I get to do is encourage and empower other artists to grow their studios through Making Art Work. Doors are open now!

Making Art Work is your companion to growing your own studio and undoing SO MANY of the limiting beliefs we are handed as artists. Painters can make money. Poets can make money. Photographers can make money. Designers and ceramicists and dancers and writers and weavers and… CREATIVITY IS INCREDIBLY abundant (when you know how to grow your studio).

I Began Making Money Out of Desperation -- My Artist Origin Story

Making Art Work opens 3.26 -- join the 9-week masterclass designed to help you grow your studio into a sustainable and profitable career.

Hot Take: Burnout is NOT a Rite of Passage. Artists do not need to experience burnout in order to create good work or grow a successful business, but so many of us do. Sadly.
But many of us don’t know that until we experience it.

So learn from me instead!

In 2021, I had my BEST year in business ever ever ever. Like wow. But I also went into complete and total burnout (nervous system shutdown and all). The things that brought me out of that overwhelming space were mostly energetic shifts:
1. Progress is Quiet and Slow. It’s OK for things to take time. I can be gentle and productive. 👏👏
2. I MUST feel rewarded for my energy. This sometimes means $, sometimes means fun, or freedom, or making an impact… feeling like your work is giving abundantly is everything.
3. Space to PLAY. Artists need to feel free and light and whimsical. Care for yourself. Release some pressure every now and then. Perfectionism is so heavy to hold.
4. Say NO to things that don’t excite you. There’s nothing heroic about bypassing your boundaries. We’re doing things purely out of obligation.

If you’d like a little bit more of an energetic boost, please join me in Share the Work later this month! It’s a four-day FREE course. We’ll be talking live over zoom about growing a sustainable creative business & enjoyingggg this work.

How To Never Burn Out Again

Spoiler alert: YES. Of course we should make money! Don't get me ryled up again! I believe so firmly in Creative's ability to create energy around their work, sustain their physical needs, and support their dreams -- with their ART.
Now let's discuss how, why, and HOW. ;)
In this episode, I'm sharing three more fundamental habits that should be part of the way you see the world as a professional artist and creative person. Settle in, this is a good one.

If your art business has felt a little quiet, uncertain, or unpredictable lately, let me tell you: you are not alone. The economy is feeling uncertain, the energy in the world is even more so. And Artists are often feeling it all -- and we still need to make SALES! Let's discuss.
In this episode is part one of a longer conversation and is a grounded guide to selling your art in every season (literally and metaphorically).
We’ll talk about the internal seasons we all cycle through—winter (rest), spring (inspiration), summer (creation), and autumn (harvest)—and how understanding those rhythms can transform the way you run your creative business. One of the most confusing (and frustrating) parts of selling your creative work? Finding the collectors, buyers, customers, students, or clients who truly connect with what you create. If this feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. But here’s something I need you to know:
✨ ART IS NOT HARD TO SELL. ✨
I know, I know—you’ve probably heard otherwise. Maybe you’ve even felt it yourself. But the idea that selling art is an uphill battle? It’s simply not true. The key is understanding why people buy art in the first place.
Art isn’t a necessity like tires or groceries—it’s something we choose. Something we feel drawn to. Your buyers aren’t just making a purchase; they’re investing in meaning, self-expression, and the energy your work brings into their lives.
💡 In this episode, we’re diving into:
✔️ Why people buy art (and why it’s not about convincing them)
✔️ The emotional connection that turns viewers into collectors
✔️ How art creates belonging, identity, and a sense of home
Selling your work isn’t about pushing—it’s about finding the people who are already looking for what you create. And trust me, they’re out there. Let’s talk about how to reach them. 🎙️

The Truth About Selling Your Art (and Why It’s Easier Than You Think!)
This week, we’re tackling one of the biggest hurdles artists face: moving past the fears and doubts that make selling feel hard. Yes—even in today’s chaotic world, building a thriving art career is absolutely possible. Abundance, fulfillment, and creative freedom are within reach once you shift limiting beliefs and embrace practical strategies that let your art take up space.
While doubts may never fully disappear, you don’t have to let them lead. Instead, we’ll focus on replacing them with empowering truths and aligned action. Because sharing your work and seeing it resonate with others isn’t just rewarding—it’s life-changing.
A Profitable Art Career Begins with One Essential Step: Sharing Your Work.
Here’s my promise to you: I’ll be honest, kind, and—hopefully—inspiring. I’ve been a full-time artist since graduating from art school in 2008, and let me tell you—art school didn’t prepare me for selling my work or growing my business. That part? That came through trial, error, and years of learning what actually works. Now, I’m honored to share those lessons with you.
Growth happens when we recognize where we need to expand. Instead of letting self-doubt or criticism hold you back, let’s meet every challenge with intention, compassion, and clarity—so you can step into the thriving art career you deserve.
This episode is for you if you’ve ever felt:
🎨 Afraid your work isn’t valuable enough to sell
🎨 Uncertain about how to confidently share your art
🎨 Stuck in the mindset that success is for “other” artists
Let’s release the beliefs keeping your work hidden—so you can sell with confidence and ease.

How To Create Art That WILL SELL - Making Art Work Opens THIS WEEK

SHARE THE WORK -- RSVP to join us March 10th-14th
Making Art Work opens for enrollment March 13th!

Hi sweeties. I've moved into my new studio and settled into my work (getting ready for Share The Work, writing, and teaching), but painting? That's a different story. Let's talk about what it means to find success in your creative practice year after year.
As I continue focusing on creating meaningful art, I find myself thinking so much about Picasso's career and why it’s important to honor our personal version of growth, no matter how it unfolds.
In this episode, we’ll explore:

Realizing You’re Always Growing and Changing: The success of your work is not linear. Picasso’s career is a perfect example—he created less refined work year after year, embracing abstraction more fully as he went. Creative growth doesn’t look the same for everyone, and it’s okay if your journey is different. We’ll also talk about the powerful story from Threads about an old artist who never sold a single painting but continued to create because he valued leaving behind his soul in his work.

Anchoring Yourself in Past Successes: Reflecting on past accomplishments can be a source of reassurance. When we look back at the work we're proud of, it reminds us that we’re capable of creating great things today and in the future. I mentioned my friend Ekaterina Popova and you must check out her work and Create! Magazine

Looking to Guides for Inspiration: Has someone else walked this path before you? Seeking out mentors and guides who’ve navigated their own creative journeys can offer invaluable lessons. Sometimes, seeing that others have walked this road without falling off a cliff can give us the confidence to keep moving forward.

RSVP for the upcoming Share The Work series starting March 10th!

What Picasso Is Teaching Me About Success

In this episode, we’re diving into goal-setting—moving beyond ego-driven pressure and into aligned, sustainable success in the studio and in your business. Setting effective goals this year is no small feat, so we’re starting with the most important thing of all: your dreams.
I also want to be clear about what my studio stands for and what we’re excited to create this year. I never thought I would need to say these words out loud—I hoped they would be obvious to all—but let me be crystal clear: this community, and every space I have the honor of creating (Making Art Work, The Collective, my social media community…), is built on a foundation of inclusivity, respect, and creativity without barriers. I’m speaking directly to those who have been marginalized or who carry less innate privilege. You belong here.
Together, we’ll walk through worksheets 2-6 from the Goal Setting Workbook, helping you define your vision, set meaningful goals, and build a creative practice that supports both your art and your well-being (but we're keeping it FUN).

Let’s create a year that feels expansive, inspiring, and true to you.

Happy New Year and welcome to my list of manifestations and wishes -- and things I would like us to do more of and STOP doing forever. This list is silly. And it's absolutely not.

Also, we get into the heart and soul of "Do It For The Process" -- which I realized mid-eposode is 10 years old! I began the hashtag #doitfortheprocess in 2025 after a bit of a little tiny breakdown in the corner of the studio, and my life has been forever changed.
But now for the 2025 Ins and Outs!

2025 Ins:

Buying the fancy art supplies because you're using the good stuff regularly these days 👑
Prioritizing your quiet (massive) dreams
Curated studio playlists 🎵
Making good coffee at home
Buying crystals on your birthday 🔮
Books with strong female leads
Foraging for pigment while traveling 🧳
Photos-walks at golden hour
Making a very big deal out of your art ‼️
Handmade ceramics palettes 💅
Craft nights with a friend
Wearing earbuds in art museums 🎧
Reading an affirmation card each morning
✨Romanticizing✨ the process

Outs:

Overthinking every brushstroke 😵‍💫
Hoarding art supplies
Plastic “wood” frames😮
Staring at screens for inspiration 🙄
Uncomfortable chairs in the studio
Imposter syndrome 🙄
Nasty wine at gallery openings 🤢
Expensive dusty candles (burn them)
Postponing creative dreams for “the right moment”🤡
Fake flowers 😅
Leaving the tops off your paint tubes 🫣
Perfectly curated feeds 😑
Using toxic materials (no, babes, it’s not worth it) 😨
Whispering abt your art and feeling sad when no one buys it 🫥

And now, the 7 Sweetest Things Being "A Creative" Has Taught Me
Your creativity might first show up in your life as curiosity  — study, learn, read, take classes, courses
The thing that makes you good at creating your art is also the thing that makes you good at running a business
I am the most dependable person in my life, and as the one creating both my art and my business, I know that I can depend on BOTH because I know that I can depend on myself
The market for my creative work is infinitely larger than my ability to create the work
People want to see my work. In their homes. In their lives. Every day. Shocker. I know. Lol
Talking about my work to others does feel scary and makes my little introverted heart want to crawl into a little hole, but it’s also so extremely fun, rewarding, and fulfilling
I am capable of wearing 50 different hats — but which ones really look best on me? Aka fit my skill-set and desires best?  And how can I let go of the things that don’t fit me best?

The 7 Sweetest Things Being "A Creative" Has Taught Me

It's time! Today, we’re having a conversation about goals. Yes, in the middle of the year. This is the best time to check in and see how your goals are progressing and what you want for the rest of the year (especially before the holiday season takes hold).
In this episode, I'm checking in on my goals for 2024; many of which I have achieved, but many I didn't. We'll discuss what to do when you realize you're not reaching your goals or need to adjust some expectations. Enjoy, my sweeties!

Vyana Novus joins us in this very tender and open discussion on creativity, trauma, beauty, and safety in this interview-episode. Can You Create Beauty From Trauma? With Vyana Novus

Hey there, friend! Welcome back to the Do It For The Process podcast – it's so great to have you here again. I've been pouring my heart into creating a fresh body of work in the studio and the painting process has taught me SO much -- yet again.
Here's the thing I've realized: pleasure is the goal. Finding joy in the process is everything. Sometimes your own happiness can be the only goal -- in and out of the studio.
Trying things that excite you and feel new can make the entire process come to life.

I've learned to embrace imperfection, to savor every moment of creation without worrying about getting it just right. And you know what? It's been so liberating, especially when I start painting within my life rather than trying to carve studio time out of my life. Now I try to create in flow AND flow in and out of my studio as I'm led by desire. Even when that means I involve my little one in the creative process. It's honestly so fun to create and paint WITH him.

Perfection is boring. Let yourself create what feels most alive and most alive. Be someone more focused on receiving inspiration rather than how you or your work is affecting others. It's so powerful when I can shed perfectionism and just appreciate the goodness in my work. It feels so good and so alive and freeing!

As always, it is a delight to create and share my practice and this gorgeous collection of work with you.

if someone buys something for their home or themselves, they want to enjoy that thing. In order to enjoy something, we have to VALUE it. In this episode, we talk about all the ways we might be devaluing our own art and efforts before ever showing our work to someone else!
As you let your imagination expand, your aspirations will follow.
And your aspirations will soon turn into goals

So much of Making Art Work is deeply practical – HOW TO grow a business around your art, when to take certain steps, the methods that make the magic… but so much of the work we do is loosening the mindsets that keep us from creating bravely and sharing our work well.
This is where Making Art Work shines. Inside this Masterclass, I get to walk with you through every single area of running a creative business. Everything from web design to wholesale, branding to creating a collection, email marketing, running ads for your art, SEO for artists and SO much more!

So far we’ve talked about The 3 things you must know to sell art online, how to know if your art is worth selling, and TODAY, I’m sharing 5 super practical, actionable tips that you can use to support your work in the world.
Marketing your art in 2024 is very different than marketing in 2014, 1924, 1400...  We have had to evolve exponentially as Creative Entrepreneurs.  We have SO much freedom and creative control over our work and careers.  The ability to meet collectors on our own -- the ability to grow and expand our work as we would like...  it's all very exciting!

Wondering where you can go to meet all these amazing, elusive collectors?
Let's talk about marketing your work in 2024!  If I were to choose only 5 areas to market, it would be these:
Email Marketing

Make your studio emails a vibrant and exciting place.  Share behind the scenes, your inspiration, offer a peek inside your studio, stories and insights...  This is an intimate space!
Create a “studio email list” of people who are interested in you + your work
Nurture those people with a beautiful “welcome sequence” — a collection of 2-10 emails that are automatically sent to your subscribers sharing:
Send early access to artwork or collections

Social Media

Show up on social media as a fine artist, designer, maker, PROFESSIONAL
Understand why you are there and why you are posting. Choose 1-2 platforms and get to know the culture and content that is doing well on those platforms.
Share your work beautifully and consistently: photograph it well, bring people into the studio, allow them to get to know your story (as it relates to your creative work), and don’t be afraid to share/sell your work!
Share your work regularly – when someone comes to your account, is your “highest” work front and center.
Many more practical tips inside of Making Art Work on growing your social media accounts, creating effective content, and maintaining a marketing calendar.

Come find me on Instagram and TikTok!

Use the magic of Pinterest

Pinterest is one of the VERY best places to share your work as a visual creative!
Pins tend to mature over age and offer benefits to your work 1-12 months after they are pinned.
Pinterest ads are also something to consider if you're ready to invest some $$ and thought into marketing.
Pin your work directly to Pinterest from the listing or blog post.  Also, pin your Instagram posts!  Why not reuse that glorious content?

Vary the content you pin: original content from your site or other platforms, photos, videos, as well as pins from other sites that will compliment your work.

COLLABORATE

Working with another creative, a designer, blogger, editor, podcaster… be your best advocate and PR.
Cross-promote, share platforms, go live with your friends, offer value to other brands and media.
Reach out to designers in your local community and offer them a trade discount (10-20% off).  You can also request or barter for amazing photographs!
I didn't mention this in the video, but you can also with designers to rent your artwork for staged homes.  Some wonderful passive income!
Commercial designers: restaurants, offices, hotels...

Show up IRL

Find ways to share your work in real life – in the real world. This could be at art shows, galleries, craft fairs, wholesale your work in shops, liscence your work and be known in your community.
The connections you can make in-person are so much greater and more effective for both marketing and for sales. One in-person meeting is worth at least 10 online meetings.  Be warm, welcoming, intentional, and get ready to welcome new people into your community!

MARKETING and growing your studio is where Making Art Work shines. Inside this Masterclass, I get to walk with you through every single area of running a creative business. Let’s get to the heart of the issue: You need to elevate your BRAND.
Yep. You. You have a brand.
I know… It's weird.
And also kind of fancy!
Let's talk about what a brand is before we get all bristly and closed off. A brand is far more than a logo. It is far more than your website. It's not your icons, graphics, images, the tiny alligator on your shirt, the label inside of your coat…

Your brand is the feeling people experience when they come in contact with your work. How cool is that! Now, allllll the things mentioned above absolutely matter and help to convey your brand, but they are not the brand.

>>>> You are in charge of bringing value to your work.
Your work might be lovely and you are authentically sharing it with your audience, but if you’re not presenting it beautifully and effectively, they won’t have the chance to appreciate it.
As you create a brand, you have space to elevate and grow.

This is where Making Art Work shines. Inside this Masterclass, I get to walk with you through every single area of running a creative business. Everything from web design to wholesale, branding to creating a collection, email marketing, running ads for your art, SEO for artists and SO much more!

Share the Work -- How to Create Art That Sells

SHARE the WORK is beginning next Monday! This workshop is happening each day at noon next week and you need to join us! If you're hoping to begin to sell more art and increase your sales in 2024, then prioritize this.

Save your seat here!

Ok, now on to our marketing prediction for 2024. I have 10 to share with you in this 3-part series. These predictions are based on my intuition, trends I'm sensing, and research I'm doing.  Experiment with them and see where they take you!
Automation > link in bio
Paid ads work so so well -- but make them niche and trust your voice to speak to the right people in the algorithm (again, be a genuine human)
Speak to your followers to encourage community. “People like us do things like this,” “you and I know” “If you've been here for a while” “Ok you already know this because of course you do…” “As we’ve talked about before” “Hi friends…” And then ask for the follow right up top in the caption
Educators are IN, influencers are OUT (algorithms are noticing a disinterest in posts marked with the mandatory #ad and are deprioritizing these posts — plus we’re bored of them)

WE BEGIN ON MONDAY!!! JOIN SHARE THE WORK! I can't say this enough. This 5-day workshop is going to change your business. So show up, get ready, and let's grow beautifully together.

MAKING ART WORK opens for enrollment next Thursday. This 9-week masterclass is ready to change and grow your business and your creative work for the better. Sustainable growth, higher sales, incredible clarity. Are you ready?

Video > Photo (but photos are going to make a comeback and are definitely highly valuable -- however, prioritize video and video content)
Easy, natural, off-the-cuff, or "low-production" > high production (but high production will catch eyes and make a lasting impact)
Personal contact > speaking to the masses (USE YOUR DMS, make connections -- more on this in the next episode!)

There is SO MUCH more coming in this mini-series! Tune in tomorrow for part 3!

PART 2: My TOP 10 Marketing Trend Predictions for 2024 for Artists and Creatives

Part 1 or 3: My TOP 10 Marketing Trend Predictions for 2024 for Artists and Creatives

Before we get into this NERDY and life-giving conversation, I have to tell you that SHARE the WORK is beginning next Monday! This workshop is happening each day at noon next week and you need to join us! If you're hoping to begin to sell more art and increase your sales in 2024, then prioritize this.

You can save your seat here!

Reach > following -- isn't that nice!! That vanity metric matters far less than the number of people actually SEEING and enjoying your content. So focus far more on that than on the number of followers. Don't get me wrong, attracting community members (followers) but if your followers aren't seeing your content either then what are we even doing here??
TRAIN THE ALGORYTHM with repetition, posting themes, and having a consistent brand aesthetic (more on this in Making Art Work). Get noticed by people engaging with similar content.
And even better than that >>> ENGAGEMENT MATTERS THE MOST!
Engagement > following (the algorithm will show your work to those people again and again whether they follow you or not)

Being a beautiful, real-life human > AI
Be as human as you possibly can be – funny, imperfect, honest, vulnerable, silly, soulful… we want to engage with people, not bots or computers so it's OK (good, even) to show your beautiful realness!

Create threads, themes, and stories, (for example, part 1, 2, 3, 4 style posts or pieces of content).
Give your audience something to sink into and feel safe in. I know that sounds a little *extra* to say that they want to feel "safe" in your content, but it's true. Series, multi-part content, and themes in your posts create a sense of known content -- that feels consistent and safe. So let us get cozy!

There is SO MUCH more coming in this mini-series! Tune in tomorrow for part 2!

MAKING art WORK early bird is open until Saturday! Don't miss this opportunity to learn and GROW your business within 9 short weeks.

Remember, you are here because you create artwork that you LOVE. You are here because you long for your work to reach a wider audience and find your COLLECTORS! You want to create work and send it into the world and know that it will be well received by your people.
Selling my work directly to my collectors has allowed me to sell to people all around the world, create freedom in my work-flow, and share my vision and perspective directly with my audience.

Attracting YOUR Collectors - Making Art Work EARLY BIRD is open!

Welcome back to the Do It For The Process Podcast! This episode is a little vulnerable and a sweet look inside of my dreams, goals, and hopes for 2024.
Remember, your dreams matter. They are the source for all your goals.
Work to only set goals over things you can control. You aren't in charge of anyone else's actions or behaviors so setting goals that expect someone to do something (like buy your work or follow you online) isn't fair to you!

The holiday season is full of energy; and selling your work during this season can be one of the most thrilling things of all...

While it is full of cheer and festivity, these few short weeks can be super intense & stressful for small business owners (creatives especially)! The pace of the holiday season is out of step with the rest of the year, and marketing seems to happen at 10x speed. To make your presence felt online, you have to be SO LOUD. The energy is high, the sales roll in, and the generous energy is flowing. It’s thrilling (and also, quite draining).
Want to know the secret to a thriving Holiday season?
I’ll tell you right up front. HAVE A PLAN.
Not sure how to do that? Well, no worries, I do! Grab a pen, and let’s get to work! I know selling can feel uncomfortable sometimes. Trust me. But offering the beauty you create is an act of generosity. And this is the season of generosity. Remember, your work wants to be bold. It wants to be big & beautiful, and the holiday season is an amazing time to allow your work to shine!

Fellow artist and maker,
be honest…
☑ Have you spent years making artwork, expecting to reach that next level, while your revenue remains stagnant?
☑ Do you know you have good work, but feel like you don’t know how to talk about it?
☑ Are you tired of leaving money on the table because you don’t have the knowledge and tools to sell your work?
☑ Do you keep hearing other artists selling out their collections, but you are left scratching your head as to what actually goes into them?
☑ Are you in a season of burnout and have no idea how to reinvigorate that creative energy in you?
I get it. Without the right tools and a clear roadmap, being a creative entrepreneur is isolating and lonely.
You might feel like your ideal collectors are just out of reach or feel like you’re scraping by. You notice your business isn’t working, but you aren’t sure how to fix it or where to start! But it’s not your fault! No one has told you how to confidently share your work and build a good business around your art.

In this episode, we talk about what makes an artist's website effective -- leading to higher sales and more thoughtful engagement by your visitor, audience, and buyers.

A Creative person's website has the chance to tell a story, take the visitor on a journey, but most importantly, ELEVATE YOUR WORK.

Because you are connecting with your collectors online through a series of shiny screens and images, it is so important to connect with your audience. The passion and heart that come naturally from the artist may not translate as effortlessly online. Find a way to bring that extra passion and sincerity to your digital platforms.

Artists often get told that they are pursuing a job, a career, a craft, or a lifestyle... FULL of instability. But is there anything more dependable and sustainable than the generous, rich well of creativity and energy we can draw from within our own bodies and minds?
In this episode, we talk about tapping into that deep well of inspiration and knowing that, because of that deep, rich well, your creativity and energetic reserves are GOOD.

The birthday email I mentioned is here. It's full and BEAUTIFUL.
I read a poem by Oriah Mountain Dreamer at the end of this episode, and I want to share it here so you can read along. These words are powerful and sweet
The Invitation
It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon.
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it, or fade it, or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own; if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day. And if you can source your own life from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand at the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, ‘Yes.’
It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

The Poem I read by Mary Oliver can be found in this book

But Can You Have Fun AND Make Money?

The summer months are full of extra light, energy, joy, and warmth -- they are the perfect months to focus on creativity, but more than that, creative PLAY.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of creating inspiration and energy overflow so that you can give from abundance and create work that is fulfilling in a deep and lasting way.
Creativity thrives when we give ourselves the freedom to play. The studio is your haven, your playground. Let go of expectations, rules, and limitations. Experiment with different techniques, materials, and styles.
Tip this same experimental, free-flowing, playful energy into your business as well! The most impactful offers and products I've created in my business came about because of PLAY. The ideas excited me, the challenge felt new and alive, and I found a joyful energy that made the work fully delightful.

I can't wait to see what you create in this season!

The Only Goal You Need This Summer: PLAY

There’s this thing about “big magic” that I love – but also dislike – magic (inspiration) can come to you and change your whole life and work in the most powerful and beautiful of ways, but it can also leave if you are not prepared to honor it and use it. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it feels true right now, and it’s adding a bit of scarcity to my mindset that doesn’t need to be present.

As I choose to step into more abundance in my studio practice, there are some words of affirmation that have proven to be POWERFUL. Let me share those with you here:

I will create good work today.
Inspiration lives inside of me. I can tap into it whenever and wherever.
It’s ok to create bad work.
Creative flow is easy for me to access.
It’s ok to rest and come back to this idea.

I know these words are simple, and that is their magic. The simplicity of these mindset shifts means they are EFFECTIVE.

If this podcast has impacted you, please rate and review this show. I would be SO thankful!

Also, please screenshot and share this episode to enter to receive a book of poetry by my new favorite author and poet, Andrea Gibson. Do so by JULY 1ST, please! 🥰

Getting Back Into Abundance In the Studio

It's been a while. Let's catch back up. Many things in my life have changed, and many are still the same. One thing that has remained the same is that creativity is deeply generous, art has the power to HEAL, and empowering other artists is deeply meaningful and powerful.

I read a poem by my new favorite poet, Andrea Gibson. Check out their work here. And read the poem I read in this podcast on their Instagram.

It is an honor to be back in this space with you!

Welcome Back to Do It For The Process

I'm doing something brave - scary - generous - loving - needed - luxurious - important - countercultural...
I'm RESTING. Not yet -- right now I'm diving headfirst into Making Art Work and I'm SO excited to nurture and empower the Creative Community in this way. My sabbatical will begin in 2023 and will be focused on creativity, inspiration, rest, writing, and nurturing the parts of my that have been patiently waiting for attention.

I'm so excited.

If you're feeling thirsty for inspiration and creativity, maybe this is your nudge to think about prioritizing those things just a bit.
You don't have to have a sabbatical year -- you could start by carving out 2 hours a week to nourish that part of you. Create a terrarium around your inspiration and walk in it as often as you can.
This big dream is living in you for a reason. Creativity is blooming inside of you because it has found a home there. That's an honor. Elizabeth Gilbert has a theory about inspiration being a living thing that is looking for a receptive home to give it form – YOU are that form.

You are that home.
You have that ability.
And Creativity will never take from you more than it gives.

It may give you joy, connection, purpose, money, impact, or a vehicle for change – I think it will give you ALL of the above. Trust it. Honor it. Empower it.

My inbox and DM's have been spilling over with big-hearted creatives eager and nervous about taking the next step in their creative journey – trusting me to walk alongside them. What an honor! Making Art Work is open for enrollment through TOMORROW!

If you're feeling those same nerves, eagerness, readiness, but also a bit of uncertainty, please take some of my confidence. This work is GOOD. YOU can do it. I will help you accomplish big, beautiful things.

Practical Tips to Grow Your Dream Career + Move Past the Lies

Making Art Work is OPEN! Come join me in this transformative creative course.

Making Art Work is a 12-week course where I teach Artists and Creatives how to build a soulful, profitable business. I’ve watched hundreds of Alumni sell their high-end creative work consistently, they create collections that are often purchased in minutes, launch products with their dream companies, grow their collector base (way more important than your IG followers), and run profitable, sustainable, multi-passionate events.

Today, we're going to dive into marketing effectively.
Marketing Your Work Effectively and Sustainably
Email Marketing
Make your studio emails a vibrant and exciting place. This is an intimate space — the perfect place to not only sell your work, but also share behind the scenes, your inspiration, peek inside your studio, stories and insights, and early access to artwork or collections.
Social Media
Show up on social media as a fine artist, designer, maker, and professional. Share your work beautifully and consistently: photograph it well, bring people into the studio, allow them to get to know your story and brand, and don’t be afraid to share/sell your work!
Use the Magic of Pinterest
Pinterest is one of the VERY best places to share your work as a visual creative! Users come to Pinterest as a way of gathering inspiration, ideas, aesthetics, and to find products — sounds perfect, right? Pin your work directly to Pinterest from your website, listing, social media, and/or blog post.
Work with Designers
Reach out to designers in your local community and offer them a trade discount (10-20% off). You can also request or barter for amazing photographs! I didn't mention this in the video, but you can also with designers to rent your artwork for staged homes. Some wonderful passive income! Commercial designers: restaurants, offices, hotels...
Go Offline
Find ways to share your work in real life – OFF the internet. This could be at art shows, galleries, craft fairs, wholesale your work in shops, and be known in your community. The connections you can make in-person are so much greater and more effective for both marketing and for sales. One in-person meeting is worth at least 10 online meetings. Be warm, welcoming, intentional, and get ready to welcome new people into your community!

5 Ways to Marketing Your Work -- Share the Work

This is the third episode in the Share the Work Series and things are getting more practical by the day!

Remember,
You bring
the VALUE to
your work.

Now we’re going to talk about all the aesthetic elements that surround your work and think through how they communicate your brand message.
As the creator, you also get to create an elevated brand.
A brand is far more than a logo. It is far more than your website. It's not your icons, graphics, images, the tiny alligator on your shirt, the label inside of your coat.
YOUR BRAND IS THE FEELING PEOPLE EXPERIENCE WHEN THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH YOUR WORK. And now that you know you have a brand, let’s discuss how you can refine and elevate your brand.

Creating a (Totally Unique + Beautiful) BRAND -- Share the Work

One of the first challenges we have as artists are finding "the right" audience for our work. Before you can expect to attract customers, you have to understand what your work is saying as it is active and living in the world.
In this episode, I'll help you DEFINE YOUR WORK
Outward expression & aesthetics of the vision
01/ Keep imposter syndrome to a minimum - honor the beauty and importance of what you have created.
02/ Get clear on why your work matters to you
03/ Look at your work from the outside; is it speaking in the way you intend?
04/ How are you conveying the value of your work to others? I recommend good photography, speaking about it well, consistently and effectively sharing your work in your soulful marketing, and making it easily accessible to your ideal audience.
05/ Define who your ideal audience is and where they feel most comfortable.
06/ Determine how to use empathy to share your work effectively.

Learn to evaluate your work honestly, treat it with respect, and elevate it so others can value it too! Honestly, this episode feels a little vulnerable to share, but I'm doing it because I trust that when creatives thrive, we ALL thrive.

The Flow of Every Creative Idea

Hello dear listener! Before we begin, would you please rate and review this podcast? TY BB!

This episode of going to be a bit raw and real. A lot has evolved in the studio since we last talked.
I've hired a whole new team (including my husband!).
We are continuing the things that work while doing our best to weave sustainability into the productivity.
My creative practice has ebbed and flowed and I'll bring you behind the scenes on that process.
I'm opening the doors to The Creative Maven Mastermind tomorrow (October 21st)! I am SO EXCITED about offering this year-long mastermind again. If you are craving a space to nourish your dreams, grow your business, and step into greater success, then apply to join us! Applications are open for just under a month.
Traveling, resting, working on health...

Last summer we talked about burnout (episode 41, August 30th 2020) and the process of healing from Burnout has been slow and constant. A metaphor came to me while expressing how this process feels that I think is helpful.
Our journey happens within a beautiful mountainous landscape. There are meadows, cliffs, valleys...
When you "burn out" you are, essentially falling over the edge of a cliff -- you might fall incredibly far or just a few feet. The recovery time may look different depending on how far you fall and how much energy you have to tap into. Climbing back up the mountainside is just part of the healing process.
The other part is a bit sneaker. We know that falling over the cliff is less than ideal - right? that makes sense. However, we tend to flirt with danger just a bit. Maybe it's the hustle culture. Maybe it's the stack of shoulds and "musts" consistently in our orbit. Maybe it's poor habits formed early... regardless, learning that hovering near the edge of that cliff is not a sustainable way to live. I like to be close to that edge. I like the pace of it, the energy required, the "effort" of it all -- however, health (mental, physical, emotional, relational health) is not possible when near the cliff. People can't come near you. You can't make one wrong move. There is too much at risk.
My focus for 2021 and 2022 is learning to take consistent steps away from the cliff edge and into the safe and gentle spaces of the meadow where I can dance and sing and create without risk or fear. Where there is space to move and take bolder actions because the risks are less extreme if they fail. There are a lot of layers to HOW we can do that as profitable entrepreneurs (we can't just play all day -- though that would be lovely).
Practically, this means hiring a team, establishing boundaries around my energy, setting expectations, being a bit more flexible/generous with deadlines and timelines, and (most importantly) respecting myself enough to care for myself.

If you can resonate with this, you are in good company. We can grow and progress together -- away from the cliff. Just back away from the cliff a little more each day. We can do this. ;)
2020-21 has been exhausting. We're doing so, so well. Now it's time to allow a little ease and healing into our lives.
This is important because when we are nourished we are able to create good and nourishing work. Let your work be big and bold in the world, dear Creative!

State of the Studio Address // an honest look behind the scenes

I have a VERY special episode for you today: a conversation with Morgan Harper Nichols.  Morgan is a writer, artist, poet, singer, and SO much more. She is deeply generous with both her art and in this podcast conversation.
If you want to see Morgan's work, head here to go to her website, shop, and Instagram.
Morgan recommended a song called "Constellations" by Brenden James which you can find here.

And join The Collective!  This space is designed to enable Artists to thrive.  Your business is ready for growth. YOU are ready for growth.  Let's grow faster and more beautifully together!

MHN on Share Vulnerably & GROWING Because of It -- with Morgan Harper Nichols

Let’s cut right to the chase.  We’re here because running a creative business can be confusing.

But NOT anymore.  We have big dreams for our creative work and -- GOOD NEWS -- they are valid and totally attainable.

Inside of this episode (which is WAY MORE like a workshop -- get your notebook out), we're going to walk through the exact steps needed to grow your BUSINESS.

Let's take a look at The Artist’s Path to Success

STEP 01/ ASPIRATIONAL ARTIST
Ground yourself in creativity. Dedicate your energy to pursuing art. Develop your signature style and vision. Profit:

The Artist's Path to Success! Welcome to Season 5

Making Art Work is open through tomorrow!  Join us if you're ready for some massive growth in 2021

But first, let's take it back.  In 2010 when I officially began my fine art career I did NOT have an aspirational brand. I didn’t even know I had a brand (though, yes, I did — we all do). I was deeply undervaluing my work, my voice, my efforts, and, in doing so, I was also undervaluing my collectors.

Think about it this way — if someone buys something for their home or themselves, they want to enjoy that thing. It matters to them.  They find pleasure in it.
In order to enjoy something, we have to VALUE it.

When you know what you create and WHY it matters, you can easily and naturally share that love with your audience.

So HOW do you elevate your work?
Head consistently in the right direction.
Know WHY you create and why that matters
Understand your works value and aesthetic merits
Recognize the overall impact your work is creating as a whole (this is your brand)
Consistently raise your expectations for what your work can be in the world.

THIS IS A LIFELONG PROCESS

I began my business by selling a $1 painting. I grew from that deeply undervalued place to a creative practice with collectors on every continent, consistently sold-out collections, and a practice that offers me financial and emotional freedom.

LET’S START THAT JOURNEY

Sharing, writing, and talking about your work is never truly easy. It is a vulnerable act of bravery! But, without that bravery, your work is mute. Your work is hidden. And that’s not what it was designed for!

With your why and your vision in mind, think of how to translate that to the world. If this feels overwhelming right now, DON’T WORRY. This is the focus of Making Art Work and I will coach you through this process.

View your brand from the outside.  How does your work objectively feel to your ideal customer or collector?

When you share your work with your audience online is your work being elevated and valued?
How about in-person?

There are ALWAYS ways to continually elevate and build-up, and REFINE your work, marketing, and presentation. This is a good thing! It means you get to keep creating and refining!

As you go through this process, don't be too hard on yourself.  Remember, you are just finding paces to play inside your business!
When needed, give yourself a COMPLIMENT SANDWICH. (it works on others and it works on yourself)
Give yourself a two compliments + with an improvement in the middle

Remember, sustainability = satisfaction + progress. If you don’t find joy in your work you are going to be burnt out.

Making Art Work is open through tomorrow!  Join us if you're ready for some massive growth in 2021
IF YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL TO SHARE, YOU HAVE ALSO BEEN GIVEN THE CREATIVITY, ENERGY, KNOWLEDGE, & RESOURCES NEEDED TO SHARE IT.

Level Up! Level Up! 🥰 Evaluate, Share, and Elevate!

Let me see if I've got this right:
You create good work (check!)
You know your buyers are out there (somewhere…?)
You know you can sell your work more effectively, but there's something missing. Something isn't working quite right yet, but you can't quite put your finger on it.

I'm going to say a dirty word. You ready?

It's your BRAND.

Yep. You. You have a brand.
I know… It's weird. And feels gross at first.
And also kind of fancy!

BUT, hear me out!

Let's talk about what a brand is before we get all bristly and closed off. A brand is far more than a logo. It is far more than your website. It's not your icons, graphics, images, the tiny alligator on your shirt, the label in your coat…

Your brand is the feeling people experience when they come in contact with your work. How cool is that! Now, allllll the things mentioned above absolutely matter and help to convey your brand, but they are not the brand.

In fact, your brand is anything but stuffy or snobby or slimy. Your brand is beautiful

And now that you know you have a brand, we can work to make it so much more impactful and meaningful!

And now, GO CREATE A BRAND MOOD BOARD!  You can share it in our private Facebook Group too!

MAKING ART WORK is opening tomorrow!  Check out all the course details and goodness here.  Is it right for you?  Feel free to reach out with any questions!   learn@emilyjeffords.com

"Eeew... I Have a What?" Yep! You have a BRAND

What does it mean to share your vision with your audience?
How can you trust that your art can speak clearly and effectively in the world?
How can you build up your work so that it is VALUED by the right people?
Get clear on why your work matters to you
Look at your work from the outside — is it speaking in the way you intend?
Learn to convey that value to others
Define who your ideal audience is and where they feel most comfortable
Use empathy to share your work effectively
This episode is long, but I recommend grabbing a notebook and settling in!  We uncover SO MUCH mindset work and practical advice for you as you GROW.

Clarify Your Vision + Why Your Work Matters (the Heart of a Successful Creative Career)

There are a lot of lies that rattle around our heads and sink into our hearts -- some are chosen (limiting beliefs we think will keep us safe), some are given to us.
In this video, we dispel these common lies so fast and so completely that their hold on our community will be massively diminished.

Before we dive in, here are a few links you might want!
Join the Share the Work CHALLENGE!  It's happening here and in Facebook!  Facebook will be the home-base for the content, but I'll also be sharing the prompts here as well.

Want some extra-pretty graphics and images to share on your IG Story?
Here ya go!

Ok, and with that, let's start busting some lies!

Lie No. 1:
Your worth as a human is directly tied to the success of your work

Nope.  Don't listen to this sneaky, toxic lie.  You are always worthy and beautiful. The success of your work does not play any part in your value, however, I understand why it might feel that way at times. Let’s get to the heart of THAT longing: You want your work to be valued. And it hurts when it’s not. I get it.

And again, let’s get to the heart of the issue:

Any lack of “success” you might be feeling in your work can be very strategically tied to one of three things

An issue with the offer
Is the work good?
Is it resonating with your viewer?
Does it resonate with you?
go back to episode 2 and listen with your whole heart if you sense this might be the issue)

An issue with your AUDIENCE

Are there enough eyes on your work?
Are they the right eyes?
If this area is the issue, work to get your art in front of your idea collectors!

An issue with your marketing

Are you speaking to them in a way that inspires them?
Is the messaging around it effective?
Are your calls to action inspiring and attractive?
If this is the area is the issue, then go back to the 4th video and massive up-level you marketing! You are the best representative your artwork will ever have in this world. Allow your work to the radiant.

Lie No. 2: The artworld is too noisy and my work will not be seen

What makes you different?
The fact that the art world is getting busier is a GOOD THING for creatives
We are reshaping culture — the more artists thriving and active online and offline, the more comfortable and receptive the collector community will be!

Lie No. 3: My creative work could never fund my lifestyle anyways

Back it up: How much money do you need to live? 40k? 100k? 200k?
How many pieces of art or designs or products do you need to create to meet that goal?  Break your year down into seasons - how much do you need to create in order to meet your income goals each season

Download The Artist's Year of Growth and simply work out the math, glad the goals, and let your gorgeous work do the rest!

Lie No. 4: My audience is tired of seeing what I’m making
Then why are they following you?
My audience is following me BECAUSE they want to see what I’m creating
How are they showing up when you share your work online and in-person?
They are freaking in love with you!

Lie No. 5: This isn’t dependable
The main reason this lie get’s into our hearts is because we are unsure if we can depend on ourselves.

TRUST ME I KNOW THIS FEELING

Once you learn to trust yourself, your inspiration, your habits, and your goals, you are able to trust your audience as well.  They’re here for you — but they want you to lead them into a more beautiful path.  SHOW UP FOR YOURSELF but also SHOW UP FOR THEM

Five Lies Creatives Often Believe (and Why You Will Succeed If You Don't!)

Welcome back to the Share the Work Series!
Welcome back!  Want to WATCH this podcast episode?  Well, you can!

So far we’ve talked about The 3 things you must know to sell art online, how to know if your art is worth selling, and TODAY, I’m sharing 5 super practical, actionable tips that you can use to support your work in the world.
Marketing your art in 2021 is very different than marketing in 2010, 1980, 1800, 1600...

Let's talk about marketing your work in 2021!

If I were to choose only 5 areas to market, it would be these:

Email Marketing
Make your studio list a vibrant and exciting place.  Share behind the scenes, your inspiration, offer a peek inside your studio, stories, and insights...  This is an intimate space!
Create a “studio email list” of people that are interested in you + your work
Nurture those people with a beautiful “welcome sequence” — a collection of 2-10 emails that are automatically sent to your subscribers sharing:
Send early access to artwork or collections

Show up on Instagram as a fine artist
Understand why you are there and why you are posting.
Share your work beautifully and consistently: photograph it well (more on this in the Share the Work Challenge — then a LOT more in MAW)
Share your work regularly (1/6 at least)

Pinterest
Pinterest is one of the VERY best places to share your work as a visual creative!
Pins tend to mature over age and offer benefits to your work 1-12 months after they are pinned.
Pinterest ads are also something to consider if you're ready to invest some $$ and thought into marketing.
Pin your work directly to Pinterest from the listing or blog post.  Also, pin your Instagram posts!  Why not reuse that glorious content?

Work with designers
Reach out to designers in your local community and offer them a trade discount (10-20% off).  You can also request or barter for amazing photographs!
I didn't mention this in the video, but you can also with designers to rent your artwork for staged homes.  Some wonderful passive income!

The 5 Ways I would Market My Work If I Could ONLY Choose 5. From Share the Work

How do you know if your work is "worth selling"?  In this video, I break down exactly how I evaluate my work, my collections, and my voice in the world.
While this title might sound intimidating, keep listening!  I think you're going to find that your creativity WANTS TO REWARD YOU.  It wants you to be successful.  It wants to live boldly and beautifully in the world.

10 tips for evaluating your work
Does it resonate with you?
Does the concept excite you?
Can you sit with it in peace for a few moments?
Did it feel good to create on an emotional and physical level?
Did you enjoy the creative process?
Were your motives pure in the creation phase?  If you are creating from a place of peace and abundance, the work will reflect that.
Do you enjoy living around the work? If I can spend time with the work then I am proud to sell it
Does it feel true to your vision, worldview, and voice?
With all the history you have accumulated as an observer, how does this match up? Is it a rough first attempt? Is it a masterpiece? Something in the middle?
Does it feel different from everything else you've seen?  We’re all drawing from the same big, beautiful pot of inspiration. However, draw upon that inspiration from your own perspective.  Pursue originality! It is worth the struggle, learning curve, and the pursuit of purity!

WHEN YOU FEEL CONFIDENT IN YOUR WORK YOU CAN TAKE GREATER RISKS
I would love to hear how you have taken risks in your studio!  Some days, just showing up feels risky enough -- other days creating something new or larger or a different subject matter can feel like a heroic act.  ;)

How To Know If Your Art is Good... From Share the Work -- with Emily Jeffords

Welcome back!  Want to WATCH this podcast episode?  Well, you can!

Today we're taking our very first step into creating a Creative Brand and Career that is elevated, thoughtful, and totally, completely ATTRACTIVE.

Whether this is your first month as a "Creative Entrepreneur" or your 20th year, this video will offer you space to contemplate your work, your brand, and your vision so that you can refine everything.

THREE THINGS YOU MUST KNOW TO SELL YOUR WORK (online and offline)
1. Your website is your gallery, but start simple. Less is more and the most important thing is that you share your gorgeous work with the world. Don’t let a website hold you back (that’s what MAW is for — hint hint)
2. Your collectors won’t find you unless you invite them into your space (marketing your website, social presence, art shows, craft fairs, gallery shows, email marketing… use your compelling storytelling, showing up on behalf of your work because it is worth your support and love).
3. Your work will only be attractive if you are actively attracting people to your work (clarifying your story, brand vibe + aesthetic)

Spend some time with these three areas of your business (and yes, if you are an artist who hopes to sell her work, you absolutely have a business.  Don't let that shiny word intimidate you!)

Consider each area individually and fine one place that needs a little refinement:
Your work's presence in the world (via your website, art shows, IG, Etsy... wherever you share your work)
Your marketing efforts (no one will find your work unless you actively invite them to do so).
The attractiveness of your work.  And I don't mean "prettiness" -- I mean how well is your work aligning with your vision?  And is your vision aligning with your collectors and buyers?

This is a short video, but it is FULL of ideas that can change everything for you and for your career!  They certainly have changed my life!

Come back tomorrow!  We're discussing how you know when your art is "good".  I'll share some honest and thoughtful tips for evaluating your work and building your business around the pieces that truly SHINE.

By the end of our time together you will feel empowered and excited to share your work in the most vibrant and passionate way possible.

Over the next four days we’re going to dive into:
3 things you must know to sell art online
How do you know if your art is worth selling?
5 ways to share your work and get the attention of collectors
Breaking the mold: The 5 most hurtful lies artists believe (and 5 ways we can overcome those blocks).

I suspect that, because you’re here, you create beautiful work that you are proud of and want others to appreciate.
You are a little tired of artwork stacking up around your studio or in the corner of your spare bedroom

Your creative vibe is THRIVING but your business is withering

If you have a creative business, you wonder HOW LONG will this thing keep sustaining me? Can I really make this a life-long career?

HERE’S THE DEAL:

Beautiful creative careers don’t happen by accident.

Vibrant creative businesses are crafted and designed and there are enormous amounts of LOVE poured into them.
Intentional planning
Listening to your energy
Knowing that your inspiration is dependable and that it WILL show up
Serving your collectors and community so well that they will support you in kind

I want you to leave out time together feeling so connected to and confident in your work that you are proud to share it with the world (ps. this is marketing - and it’s fun)
Stop holding back your work!
Allowing your work to shine in the world not only leads to more attention, customers, and collectors, but it leads to more BEAUTY and LOVE in the world.
Share your passion and heart as freely and as elegantly as you are able and I guarantee you will be met with so much joy and success.

Hello, burnout.  We meet again, I see you, I feel you, and I thank you.

Picture a match.  You’re holding it in your hand, maybe lighting candles on a cake, maybe lighting a fire, but you’re holding and it’s getting closer and closer to your finger.  You want to keep going, just one more candle!  But the flame is getting hotter so your heart rate goes up and you move faster to the next candle and your fingers begin to hurt, and then

It’s too late.

You got burned.

You drop the match and kiss your fingertips and feel so silly and also OUCH!

That is burnout.

Burnout is deeply painful, but it is often a result of growth (often, growing too fast).  We allow ego to hop in and take charge -- which leads us to say "I can do that!" waaay too often.
But there are some benefits to burnout too.  It acts as an irrefutable reminder that I do not need to please everyone and solving all problems.  To stop holding pain and worry.  It is a reminder that I do not need to show up in every way and to rely on my support structure.
Burnout clearly let me know that I was allowing anxiety to be my first response, rather than trusting that everything will be fine.  It is a clear, loud sign that I was NOT OPERATING WITHIN MY VALUES

Burnout can be a generous gift -- a moment of course correction before it's too late.
And when you heal from burnout, oh life is so sweet.  IF you have actively and carefully healed and set up some boundaries, the upsides of burnout can be:
— energy
— hard truths
— realignment
— honesty
— asking for help
— accepting help
— losing the absurd idea that you can or should do it all
— a deeper love for what matters
— humility
— healing

The sweetest thing about burnout is it requires you to be honest with your limits
It allows you to pay attention.  And attention is the clearest doorway to gratitude.

Hello, Burnout. It's nice to see you. // My personal experience with, and healing from, burnout.

I have a treat for you today! I recorded a conversation with my pal Laurie Anne Gonzalez about creating PRINTS!
Photograph or scan?
In-house printing or out-sourced printing?
Canvas or paper?
Limited edition or open edition?
How do I get the right file size?
What kind of camera or scanner should I use?
Do prints devalue your work?

We get into ALL THE QUESTIONS.

Prints have been a huge source of revenue for my business and I would absolutely NOT have the healthy studio I do today without offering reproductions of my work.
If you're ready to begin or grow this part of your studio practice, I highly recommend Art To Print. Laurie Anne takes you through each and every step of the process -- from easel to print to packaging. It is a thorough, clear, and insightful course and I know it's going to change your business!

Sign up for Art To Print HERE.

Also, THE COLLECTIVE opens for enrollment on Monday!  August 24th - 31st.  JOIN US.  This space is designed to help creatives and artists thrive.   Learn more HERE.

Step into the studio for a bit.  Let's catch up and talk about the new collection of artwork I have created, "Quiet Adventure".   In this episode, I share my process and favorite methods to create and release a collection of artwork.

This body of work came together slowly and gently, a form of meditation and healing over the past 20+ months.  There are paintings in this collection I worked on as my baby was crawling around my feet, others I created as a refuge from my own home as we shelter-in-place.  This body of work was created selfishly as an act of self-care, but it is also for you.  I hope the theme of love and adventure and peace fill you too.

"Quiet Adventure"

I walked through a field.
It was new to me, but I knew it already.
The earth smelled like childhood.
The grasses clung to my bare feet in familiar ways.
The only thing unknown was the landscape.

She was vast and led to places I have not been.
Adventure, we call it.
Unknowing.
But in the unknowing is a deep self-knowing.
Trust in my body.  Trust in my mind.
Trust in the bravery I have shown.
Knowing that I will be brave again.

Even when the landscape unnerves me
with the edges she is asking me to explore.
Even when Adventure wraps itself in unfamiliar foliage.

I step outside of my mind
and the endlessness of my concerns
to focus on each footfall.
Moss.
Small blooms to be avoided (they are too pretty to squish).
A deep hole just the right size for a snake.
A rock to climb.  Then another.
A cliff.
We’re a little too high now.
A rusty-red puddle.
The sound of wind in the thousand-mile-field.

Mindfulness, they call this; the act of focusing on the present moment.
I call it a Quiet Adventure.
And it is all so quiet and so beautiful I cannot breathe.
I cannot breathe so I take big, cavity-filling breaths.
Imprinting the scent and textures on my soul.
Consuming it in thirsty eyefuls.
Scooping it up and tucking it in
and asking it to stay with me.

I walked through a field that was wholly unfamiliar to me.
But I knew myself in it.  I knew that I would be brave.
I knew I would let it change me.

Come Into The Studio: Inside the "Quite Adventure" Collection

What does creativity look like during covid-19? ⁣
Is it quiet? ⁣
Is it lonely? ⁣
Is it an escape? ⁣
Is it a home within a home?
Is it a way to scream without sound? ⁣
Is it a balm? ⁣
Is it a memory of the past? ⁣
Is it hope? ⁣

The role of an artist is to feel and translate the things we are seeing, feeling, and receiving into something we can all see and feel and receive.

But, creating during hardship can be hard.
 Or easy.
Or it might make you feel guilty.
Or it might bring you peace.

Whatever you’re feeling when you step into your home art studio is valid and the world WILL return to normal again soon

Because this time can be especially lonely for many of us, I thought I would read some of the words of our fellow artists and creatives.

I hope they bring you some comfort and maybe you feel less alone as we work through this time together.

If you're looking for a little added inspiration and clarity during this time, the Artist's Success Guide is FOR YOU.  A transparent look at growth as a creative entrepreneur, honest conversations about how it feels to create the business out of nothing, steps to take, things to focus on, reading lists, and honest advice from someone who's been there.

Creating During Covid

A few tips for setting up a functional at-home studio:
First and foremost, make sure the supplies you are using are SAFE.  Do not use toxic materials in your home.
I've created a free guide to help with that.  Get the Studio Setup Guide.

Once you're ready to set up your studio space, keep these tips in mind:
Make your home studio an easily accessible space but not in a space that will impede normal life.  I bought a little table on Amazon and set it up in the corner of my living room.

Have a variety of art supplies on hand.  Feeling free and explorative is always important, but especially right now!  Gather all the mediums you think you might want and bring them into your home studio space.

Tupperware bins.  Keep all the paints and supplies out of reach and contained (especially if you have little ones!)

Jars with lids for all the liquids and to store brushes.  Spaghetti sauce jars, fancy mason jars...

Dedicated cabinets and drawers.

You might need to change what or how you create to make working-from-home a viable option -- especially if you're used to working in a separate studio space.
Work smaller if needed
Get a table easel if you prefer to work vertically or use two nails in a wall and hang your canvas directly on the wall
Use your walls as drying space or storage (plus, you get a house full of art! Woohoo!)

Ok, so we have the materials gathered and stored, the space set up, but how do you get anything done at home.
Communicate with your people.  Let your roommates, kids, partner, friends... everyone around you know about your planned creative sessions.  Block out 60 or 90 minutes, schedule a painting-afternoon, etc.  Just be clear and let them know what to expect so you can all work in harmony together.
Tell little kids that this studio space is only for mama (yes, even 2-year olds).
Share your longer-term vision, aspirations, and plans with your partner so they can support you in them.

Ok, so your space is set up, functional, safe, and everyone is letting you create, but it feels lonely...  I get it.  Creativity is usually a lone-act, but it shouldn't feel isolating.  When that feeling seeps in, I recommend finding ways to bring some warmth into your space.
Engage with the creative community and help this space feel alive and communal
Host an Instagram Live while in your creative space
Hop on zoom with a few artist friends and just create alongside each other.
Organize an online craft or bad-art night

Most of all, be gentle with yourself.  If you're feeling inspired in this space, then AWESOME!  If not, then that's fine.  But don't allow the inaccessibility of your creative space be to the reason you don't create.  Make your space as welcoming and accessible as possible and I can bet that this self-isolating season will fly by just a bit faster.

And remember to get the Studio Setup Guide.

Time to Set Up an Inspiring (and Safe) Home Studio

As concerns about the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 increase, I wanted to personally reach out to you and offer some honest thoughts.

I understand how scary and uncertain this time can feel, and the news is so loud and deeply unhopeful.

However, though the whole world feels a little (a lot) crazy, I hope that you are able to transform this storm into a season of GROWTH, TRANSFORMATION, and (dare I say) EXPANSION!

I know this pandemic is causing pain across the globe.
People are sick and scared; they are hungry and desperate.
I am watching many of my dearest friends who are small business owners scramble and wrestle with some huge questions as they try their best to stay open and profitable while also safe (and I know their story is being repeated a million times over in each of our communities.)
Low-income households and those that work in retail or service industry are feeling another layer of pain and fear through all of this.
Heroic medical personnel around the world are literally putting themselves at risk for each of us...  We're all hurting, if we're aware enough to notice.

HOWEVER,
I am also watching our society shift and recenter.
We are going home.
We are spending time with loved ones.
We have the space to trying new things.
People around us are longing for clarity, peace, and HOPE.

So, I ask again, what does this make possible?

What does the time at home make possible?
How can you grow and evolve intentionally during this strange season?
Is fear going to derail your success?
Are you going to be quickly overwhelmed?
Is the news going to clutter your mind so much that Inspiration is silenced?

OR,

Are you going to create something you will be proud to look back on?
Are you going to learn skills that will help you progress & grow?
Are you going to help those around you?
Are you going to make amazing memories with your loved ones?

"What does this make possible?"

When Stu (my mentor) asked this question last week, my first thought was to stubbornly dig in my heels and say, "There's nothing to change! We're doing great! I can't add another thing to my already full plate."

... But then, I realized that there are things to change.  Not everyone is doing great.

Sure, maybe my family is healthy, and we are totally set up to hibernate all spring if needed, but my job as an artist is to bring hope and connection to others.
My job as an educator is to offer hope and clarity to others.
My job as an employer is to be as constant and supportive as possible (maybe I can even hire a few people in need during this time).

So, welcome to my new spring plans.

Rather than traveling to the UK with my girls (we'll hopefully do that later this year), I am pouring my energy into those that need it more.

Because, guys, I have an ENORMOUS amount of hope.  I feel it welling up in my heart constantly.

I want to share that hope with you.

Art, community, support...

You in?  Stay tuned.

We're changing our plans this spring and they are 100% intended to help you grow and feel as hopeful as I do!

LET YOUR WORK BE SEEN

There are a lot of lies that rattle around our heads and sink into our hearts -- some chosen, some given.  In this video, we dispel these common lies so fast, and so completely that, hopefully, their hold on you, on US, will be massively diminished.

Before we dive in, here are a few links you might want!
Join the Share the Work CHALLENGE!  Facebook will be the home-base for the content but I'll also be sharing the prompts via email as well.

The Lies we Believe (+ practical, honest TRUTH to overcome those lies)

So far we’ve talked about The 3 things you must know to sell art online, how to know if your art is worth selling, and TODAY, I’m sharing 5 super practical, actionable tips that you can use to support your work in the world.
Marketing your art in 2020 is very different than marketing in 2010, 1980, 1800, 1600...

Let's talk about marketing your work in 2020!

If I were to choose only 5 areas to market, it would be these:

Email Marketing
ake your studio list a vibrant and exciting place.  Share behind the scenes, your inspiration, offer a peek inside your studio, stories and insights...  This is an intimate space!

Commercial designers: restaurants, offices, hotels...

Go Offline
Find ways to share your work OFF the internet (art shows, galleries, craft fairs...)
One in-person meeting is worth at least 10 online meetings.  Be warm, welcoming, intentional, and get ready to welcome new people into your community!

I hope this video has spurred so many ideas and points of clarity.

5 Ways to Get the Attention of Collectors

How do you know if your work is "worth selling"?  In this video, I break down exactly how I evaluate my work, my collections, and my voice in the world.
While this title might sound intimidating, keel listening!

"This course [Making Art Work] was so unbelievably comprehensive, it really didn’t miss the mark on anything. My website is new and stunning and I feel like I have all the tools to kickstart this adventure immediately. In fact, a few weeks into the course I decided to quit my day job. Thanks to the course I have a plan and I’m feeling confident in myself in a way I never did before." -- Maria Wigge

How Do You Know If Your Work is Worth Selling...?

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO WATCH THE VIDEO SERIES, you still can!  The videos are live until Feb 25th, 2020.

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MAKING ART WORK?  This is my signature 12-week course for Creative Entrepreneurs and it is full of all the goodness and direction you need to thrive in your creative career.

Began simply but with a vision.
Your website is your gallery, but start simple. Less is more and the most important thing is that you share your gorgeous work with the world. Don’t let a website hold you back (that’s what MAW is for — hint hint)
Your collectors won’t find you unless you invite them into your gallery (marketing, social presence, art shows, craft fairs, gallery shows, email marketing… use your compelling storytelling, showing up on behalf of your work because it is worth your support and love).
Your work will only be attractive if you are actively attracting people to your work (story, brand vibe + photography)
 DON’T BE BORING.

The key to attracting people to your work is twofold:

1. YOUR STORY:
You are selling so much more than a painting or a pot or a shirt or photograph. You are selling a lifestyle. You’re selling connection. You’re selling a way of being in the world. You’re selling a FEELING. A STORY.
Daisy Faith: "I’m now on day 19 of 100-day project. Since the start of project I’ve sold 3 of those paintings. I’ve received 3 commissions, 2 of which I’ve completed and one big one I’m about to start. Also, one more commission request directly connected to the 100-day project."

It’s fine to be a wandering generalization but it’s much more helpful if you can be a meaningful specific (Seth Godin)

 2.YOUR BRAND'S AESTHETICS:
this expands way beyond the artwork itself — we get into that in MAW but it includes your fonts, colors, photography, booth displays at art shows, business cards… everything that surrounds your work needs to ELEVATE your art.)

Erika Haskett: "Finally figured out how to combine my photography & paintings under one Instagram account & have been loving it, learned a ton about myself and how/what/why I create, have gained more opportunities since I’ve been in a much better mind state thanks to this course, have just overall learned a ton & am so grateful for this course!!

3 Things You Need to Know to SELL Your Art

Welcome to Share the Work! This is a 4 part series + challenge

I suspect that, because you’re here, you create beautiful work that you are proud of and want others to appreciate

You are a little tired of artwork stacking up around your studio or in the corner of your spare bedroom

Your creative vibe is THRIVING but your business is withering

If you have a creative business, you wonder HOW LONG will this thing keep sustaining me? Can I really make this a life-long career?

 HERE’S THE DEAL
Hoppin creative careers don’t just happen to people.

Vibrant creative businesses are crafted and designed and there is enormous amounts of LOVE poured into them.

Your artwork is your heart and your love in physical form.
And art is an expression of love
 Love is incredibly powerful.
 Love is incredibly attractive.
Love is an easy and generous thing to share.

The algorithm is not screwing your art career
Your collectors are not too poor
YOU can market your work super effectively and easily. — You don’t need a rep or gallery or agent to do this for you. YOU are the most effective voice your art has in the world.

Your creativity is abundant and it is asking you to also live abundantly

When you feel confident and empowered to share your work with your growing audience you are spreading love and connection and beauty with the world.

Marketing (aka, sharing your work) is an ACT OF GENEROSITY.
