Lemonade Mouth is actually the first DCOM that Franco and Jen have ever seen! We are delighted to have opened this door for them to the tween-Hallmark Movie experience. But even for a DCOM, Lemonade Mouth is on another level when it comes to being a queerer Breakfast Club with flip-phones. Hayley Kiyoko’s lesbian-coded “Stella” isn’t even the gayest thing about this movie, and she’s literally an anticapitalist vegetarian teenager with a rock band.

If you missed our Should’ve Been Gay episode on the original The Devil Wears Prada film we highly recommend listening to it first for the perfect podcast double feature.

You could tell us that the entirety of this nearly 2-hour long sequel takes place in Emily Charlton’s head as she recovers in the hospital after being hit by a taxi in the first movie and we would believe you. It’s simply too gay of a script for there to be any other explanation aside from ‘lesbian fever dream’. Whether you ship Mirandy, Sachston, or a secret third thing (we suggest Lucy Liu and literally any other woman on screen), you will come out of DWP2 extremely well-fed.

Although it has been 2 decades since Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) graced our screens, her red heels remain firmly on the necks of lesbians everywhere. Not even the decline of print journalism, the rise of fast fashion, and a full-on scandal can dethrone the queen of Runway. By reputation alone, she gets Lady Gaga to perform what is undoubtedly her gayest song since Born This Way. Yet, even Miranda and Lady Gaga’s chemistry isn’t the gayest thing about DWP2. That title is shared by the Emilys– Andy “I froze my eggs and have never hidden a feeling in my entire life” Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and Emily “I’m divorced and visibly repulsed by any man I have to get physically close to” Charlton (Emily Blunt), who spend the entire film openly ogling one another and bickering like an old married couple while wearing increasingly more masc outfits. They’re pretty much canonically dating by the end, bonding over a plate of shared carbs as Emily confesses to having called Andy all those years ago (all but admitting that she has been holding on to the disappointment of Andy not calling her back for literally 20 years). If that’s not a lesbian fever dream, we don’t know what is.

We know one thing for sure, The Devil Wears Prada 2 Should’ve Been Gay.

This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with New York Times Best Selling author Daniel Lavery to discuss his new fiction novel, Meeting New People, available now. Meeting New People follows the story of Barbara, a difficult, twice-divorced woman in her late 50s, as she grapples with the 9th best-friend-breakup of her life. As Barbara seeks to make her 10th (and hopefully final) best friend, she analyzes her relationships with her past 9 best friends to try to figure out what went wrong. 

Although Barbara very much claims to be straight, there is something distinctly sapphic in the intense, monogamous nature of her best-friendships and the way each one burns fast and bright before imploding dramatically. She is a particularly judgemental person who is very set in her ways and has strong beliefs on how the world works and how friendship should be. It vexes her to no end that she has followed all the rules and still ended up alone. Even though Barbara does recognize to some extent that her beliefs and behaviors are alienating her from the very community she so desperately desires, she remains heavily resistant to changing her ways in order to become more palatable. Barbara may have some rigid thought processes and generationally outdated ideas on friendship, but we believe she remains relatable in her strong yearning for understanding, acceptance, and community bonds. We find in Barbara a realistic depiction of self-growth and a glimpse into the challenges of coping with an ever-evolving social landscape. 

We’ve all known at least one Barbara in our lives, and as sapphics, we are no stranger to the overly intense, vaguely homoerotic best-friendship that tends to crash and burn. Meeting New People puts us front and center for Barbara’s inner monologues and unique perceptions of reality and asks us to consider if she’s actually wrong or simply unlikeable by today’s standards.

We thought we were big Dirty Dancing fans, but Jenny one thousand percent has us both beat. When this film was released, it was the talk of the school for anyone whose parents allowed them to see it. For Jenny and all the others whose parents said “no way”, sneakily watching Dirty Dancing at a sleepover was basically a right of passage (and a spiritual experience). Ever since the first time Jenny laid eyes on Jennifer Grey, Dirty Dancing has been playing on a loop in her head. 

Very few things need to be changed to make Dirty Dancing a canonically queer film. Francis “Baby Gay” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is already a clear lesbian. There’s literally nothing more lesbian than rolling into an unfamiliar situation and deciding it is now your job to solve a crime (and then solving that crime!). Francis’ big clipboard energy is off the charts. 

Patrick Swayze as “Johnny Castle" isn't exactly giving heterosexual either. His whole persona reads as more ‘butch lesbian’ than straight dude. Not to mention that just 8 years later, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar was released starring Patrick Swayze as the drag queen, Vida. It’s not exactly a leap for us to view this cult classic as a Dirty Dancing sequel where Johnny is finally living his truth. 

We know one thing for sure, Dirty Dancing Should’ve Been Gay.

920: Date of the Art

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that’s, “knock, knock, knockin’ on heaven’s door”. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2025 Apple TV dramedy, Eternity, Should've Been Gay. 

Eternity asks the genuinely thought-provoking question, ‘what does happiness in the afterlife look like for you’, and dares to answer it in the most heteronormative way possible. Leigh and Ellie ended up having vastly differing opinions this time around. Ellie loved the film so much, she watched it more than once, and cried every single time. Leigh was so enraged while watching it for the first and only time on a flight that she strongly considered throwing herself out of the plane while 30,000 feet up in the sky. 

For those who are unfamiliar, Eternity centers around Elizabeth Olsen’s character, Joan, as she decides between two possible “eternities” in the afterlife– one in the mountains with her first husband, Luke, who died young and waited 70 years for Joan to join him, or one at the beach with Larry, the husband with whom she spent the majority of her life and built a family. Unfortunately for Joan, neither Larry nor Luke seem all that concerned about where she would actually like to spend literal forever. They're set on mountain world and beach world, respectively, and will not budge on these decisions, even though a compromise would’ve fixed the entire problem. The one saving grace for Joan comes in her longtime best friend Karen, a late-in-life lesbian who plans to spend her afterlife lezzing it up in Paris. 

The film presents so many potential paths for Joan to take (the mountains with Luke, the beach with Larry, Luke and Larry giving in to their obvious bisexual curiosities to form a throuple, running off to Paris with Karen, choosing an afterlife herself instead of being forced into someone else’s version of a happily ever after…) and then walks her down the most aggressively heterosexual option in a way that truly feels like a hate crime. Honestly, regardless of how much anyone loves their partner, eternity is not 100 years or even 500 years, it’s ETERNITY. There is no way everyone doesn’t end up becoming swingers eventually anyway. 

We know one thing for sure, Eternity Should’ve Been Gay.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is currently crying over a gay novel in an internet cafe. 

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are hanging out with journalist and editor Yi-Ling Liu (@instalingers), author of The Wall Dancers: Searching for Freedom and Connection on the Chinese Internet. This debut narrative nonfiction follows the lives of five individuals across the past three decades as they push for social change while navigating within the walls of China’s Great Firewall. We talk with Yi-Ling Liu about online censorship in China and the life-altering importance of representation and access to community for queer people everywhere. 

In the early days of the internet, there were significantly less built-in systems of censorship and surveillance. Internet cafes were cropping up in every town, and globally people were experiencing a newfound freedom that did not exist outside of the confines of their screens. In China and the United States alike, homosexuality was still considered a crime and classified as a mental illness. However, on the newly created, not-yet algorithmically controlled internet, queer people could find one another, form communities and subcultures, and share their stories long before it became acceptable to live openly in daily life. A gay person living in a small city thinking they’re the only one in the world who feels the way they do could stumble across a queer novel in an internet cafe and have a truly transformative experience. 

Nowadays, things have flipped, especially in China. While being gay is generally more accepted and younger generations think nothing of coming out, the internet has become a much more restrictive and monitored environment. Gay couples in China can openly live their lives; but if they try to share those lives on social media, they have to do so covertly with language that won’t trigger the firewall. Words like ‘lesbian’ and ‘gay’ are automatically censored; so queer people have had to get creative, inventing a shared lexicon that keeps their content off the government’s radar. As we watch our own cultural landscape change through algorithmic censorship, increased government surveillance, book bans, and legal challenges, we can’t help but see China’s firewall as a very possible blueprint for our own near-future online ecosystem.

919: I Censor-Ship It with Yi-Ling Liu

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast for childless cat ladies everywhere.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with graphic memoirist, professor, and podcaster, Nicole J. Georges (@nicolejgeorges), and talk about why the 1990 children’s fever dream, The Witches, Should've Been Gay. If you saw this movie when you were a kid, you just might have a thing for dark haired high femmes with impossibly purple eyes. 

Children’s movies in the 80s and early 90s really went all in on nightmare fuel, and The Witches is no exception. This “baby’s first body horror” delivers everything from Animorphs-style transformations to traumatized kids trapped in paintings, plus a convention full of witchy femmes casually peeling off their wigs…and then their faces.

The story kicks off with Luke’s grandmother basically issuing a public service announcement about suspiciously stylish, childless cat ladies in sensible shoes, and then immediately kills off Luke’s parents in a tragic accident. With his parents gone, Luke goes to England with his grandmother, where their hotel just happens to be hosting a witch convention led by the highest femme we’ve ever seen, Grand High Witch, Miss Ernst (Anjelica Huston). Together with his grandmother, Luke and Bruno set out to stop the witches for good.

Witches, and villains in general, have always been queer coded, but in The Witches it barely even feels like subtext. The queerness is so loud it might as well be canon. We get into the chosen family of cults, the oddly sexual energy of fish paste on cucumber sandwiches, and the most important question, are all mice gay?

We are excited to present an intergenerational panel of talented filmmakers from the Cinema Systers Film Festival (@cinemasystersfilmfestival), the ONLY all-lesbian film festival in the United States, as they join Leigh for an inspirational discussion about finding “systerhood” and the power of sharing our stories in community. 

Leigh speaks with Laura Petrie, the founder and producer of the CSFF, about planting her acorn by bringing her vision for a lesbian film festival to life in her beloved hometown of Paducah, Kentucky. Next, we hear from Nicole de Meneses (@darkrainbowfilms), a freelance writer, producer and director who was introduced to the CSFF through a documentary on the festival (available on Lesflicks). She has had several films now featured at the festival, including the mermaid romcom, Fishy, and the vampire horror short, Last Bite. Next up is Jennifer Trujillo, the Senior Managing Director of the Gilbert Baker Film Festival (@gilbertbakerfilmfest), who faced serious anxieties over trekking to Kentucky (and subsequently fell in love with Paducah) to represent Last Bite in 2025 as a Supporting Producer. Last but not least, we are joined by Krissy Mahan, a working class film maker (and lesbian of a certain age), who has been documenting our stories since the AIDS crisis of the late 80s and is now well-known for her “dykeumentaries”, a visual record of queer people living as themselves during times when the official record may not reflect that reality. At this year’s festival, Krissy and Jenn will be leading a workshop titled "Accessibility is for Every Body”, aiming to liberate films from ableism from the pre-production stages forward. They dream of creating a cultural shift where films are truly accessible to all people regardless of their bodies' unique sensory inputs. 

Together we can normalize our stories, break free of the patriarchal, homophobic, racist, ableist world we’ve inherited and celebrate one another while using film as a mechanism for thought experiments on how to create a better world where we can all survive. We are really loving this new trend of all the animated kid’s movies with blatantly queer undertones becoming instant hits. From Frozen to Nimona, there has been a large push to teach kids to embrace differences and be true to themselves. With half of us being introduced to K-Pop Demon Hunters thanks to our own small kids, looking at all the gay angles wasn’t top of mind. But after an hour and a half of absolute bops (Golden is written by the same gay man that wrote the musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada!), the on-the-nose queerness of having a secret identity, the forbidden love between Rumi and Jinu, and Rumi’s coming out story being the core of the entire plot, we knew we had to do an SBG right away. 

We talk about our experiences with the movie, expose Gwi-Ma as a petty Log Cabin Republican, break down the lyrics to Soda Pop (which is definitely about poppers), and discuss our favorite ships (Polytrix forever!).

As most of you know by now, Ellie is getting married soon, but what you don’t know is that her brother is also getting married this year. This would be a nightmare with two straight weddings, because they can be so much more involved and require a huge time commitment. Straight weddings are by nature steeped in heteronormative culture and bogged down by the traditions of patriarchy. It feels like there is a standard formula that most heterosexual weddings follow (except of course for our allies, the straight nerds). But for our gay weddings, the limit does not exist! 

There is no one-size-fits-all way to have a queer wedding. Does the concept of a Daddy/Daughter dance make your stomach turn? Would you rather pass away than let your father walk you down the aisle? Don’t want to ever hear another super outdated ball-and-chain speech again? You’re in luck! We don’t have to do any of that nonsense. You were already breaking the mold by simply being your beautiful queer self, you might as well throw the mold all the way out for your ‘wedding gay’.

If watching Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway roll around on top of each other in wedding dresses was your gay awakening (like it was for Sydney), you’re in the right place. 

For those of you who are somehow unfamiliar, Bride Wars tells the incredibly queer story of two childhood best friends, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Olivia (Kate Hudson), who have been planning their Pride month weddings at The Plaza since their dress-up, house-playing days. When the two do finally get engaged, their weddings end up accidentally booked for the same day in June and chaos ensues as both women proceed to lose their minds. With the wedding date rapidly approaching, Liv and Emma commence an elaborate game of chicken and petty sabotage in the hopes of getting the other to cancel before finally deciding to attempt to share the venue. 

Since Bride Wars is about two heterosexual couples getting married, we expected to see a lot more of Liv and Emma’s fiancés. Instead these guys are rarely on screen, even during the wedding planning stages. There is not one ounce of romance or desire shown between the couples. In the end, Emma even leaves her own wedding to go wrestle Liv, ultimately choosing to call off her entire relationship. This would’ve been such a prime set-up for our childhood sweethearts to end up together, but of course it’s 2009 and gay marriage isn’t legal nationwide yet, so we get Emma marrying Liv’s brother as a stand-in instead. Classic. 

We know one thing for sure, Bride Wars Should’ve Been Gay.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) holds down the fort without Ellie for a delightfully nerdy and fascinating conversation with founder and speech-language pathologist Nicole Gress, MS, CCC-SLP. Nicole took what they learned from their medical training, lived experience as a genderfluid individual, and years of interacting with gender diverse clients in the Bay Area and founded Undead Voice (@undead.voice), an online, community-driven platform dedicated to eradicating the voice dysphoria experienced by 85% of the trans population. The platform is open to people of all gender identities and ages, so whether you are 9 or 90, you can take the steps toward reclaiming your voice. 

Imagine feeling overwhelming discomfort every single time you speak and the impact that would have on your ability to participate in the world and show up as your full self. This widespread detrimental impact on mental health was one of many reasons why Nicole was inspired to create something new, outside the restrictions of the medical system. With the coaching, curriculum, and community support of the Undead Voice Lab, gender diverse individuals can discover their most affirming voice in about 4 to 6 months of training.

We get real nerdy with it as Nicole breaks down exactly how the program works. They discuss the 3 influences that create a voice: environmental, cultural and physical, along with the 5 pillars that you can learn to master: tilt, weight, resonance, pitch and dynamics. Since environmental and cultural influences are intrinsic to who you are and help to showcase your personality, the program leaves those alone and focuses on the physical aspects of voice, teaching participants how to shift and control the size and shape of their vocal instrument. Leigh and Nicole also talk about voice transition as a form of accessible, non-invasive gender affirming care for trans youth.

916: Gay-se Your Voice with Nicole Gress

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that hopes you find your queerest happily ever after. 

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the animated fairytale, Charming, Should’ve Been Gay. 

One thing Charming does have going for it is a wildly stacked cast. We’re talking Ashley Tisdale, Demi Lovato, Avril Lavigne, John Cleese and Sia all in one place. Unfortunately, even a big name cast couldn’t save this film from receiving a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. We’re pretty sure the only way to save Charming from a fate worse than choking on a poison apple is to make it gay. And judging by the amount of reviews that say things like, “Does anyone else think Prince Charming is aro/ace?”, we’re all on the same page. 

Charming is a queer story from the jump, starting with the Prince’s curse. This man is cursed to have every woman he meets fall in love with him. We’re pretty sure that if you, a man, view hot women constantly throwing themselves at you as a curse, you might be at least a little bit (very) gay. Charming laments being unable to find his one true love while juggling simultaneous engagements to Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. He appears doomed to be a player, unable to find his true love amongst a sea of unlimited suitors. That is until Lenore, who is mysteriously immune to the Prince’s charms, takes a page out of Mulan’s book and disguises herself as a man. While the movie doesn’t explain why the curse does not work on her, we think there’s two simple explanations; 1. Lenore is a lesbian and/or 2. Lenore is trans/nonbinary. Since the curse is predictably heteronormative in scope, Lenore being gay and/or trans creates a loophole that we think could explain her immunity.

When we think about an age gap relationship, it isn’t so much about the specific number of years that separate the couple. While there are of course certain gaps and scenarios that give us the ick right off the bat, ultimately we define an age gap relationship more by differences in life stage than by years apart. A 20 year old college student is most likely in a very different life stage than a 35 year old whereas that same 15 year gap might feel like nothing to a couple who get together at 40 and 55.

We can’t talk about age gaps without talking about the power dynamics and patriarchal ideals they are often rooted in. So many celebrities are in significant age gap relationships and the media has normalized older men being attracted to younger barely-not-children women since the dawn of the patriarchy. But it isn’t only men who are into the gap. When we take a step back and really look at lesbian media, there is a major romanticization of the older, dominant lesbian and the younger, typically less experienced woman who is obsessed with her. From The Devil Wears Prada to Carol to Hacks, lesbians on a whole have a “mommy” problem. If you’re creeped out by a 40 year old man pursuing a 22 year old college girl, you should be just as creeped out by Carol pursuing Therese.

915: Age-ay Ap-Gay

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that would lovingly hand-feed you a churro. 

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2024 box-office smash hit, Challengers, Should’ve Been Gay(er). Honestly, we went into this movie assuming it was going to be so much gayer than it actually was. All of the promos hyped the threesome and made the story sound super queer, which made us all the more disappointed when it just did not deliver. Luckily, we have plenty of ideas on how to fix Challengers so that it can be the gay movie we were advertised.  

For a film by the same director as Call Me By Your Name, the queerness is way too subtle. Sure, there’s a threesome; but the film doubles down on both boys being into Zendaya’s character, Tashi, rather than each other. And beyond that one intense make-out, Art and Patrick never get together. There’s not so much a love triangle as there is a beard triangle, with each character equally in-the-closet. Between cringing at the poorly crafted CGI tennis balls and overly on-the-nose suggestive subtext, we couldn’t really understand why this movie got so much gay buzz. We get that everyone is desperate for queer crumbs; but the characters are not even likeable, there's barely any on-screen queerness and they somehow made Zendaya unattractive! While the film does provide an interesting take on sex and power (and on paper looks to be the tennis-equivalent of Heated Rivalry), it falls short on delivering any resolution to the sexual tension between Art and Patrick and never touches on Tashi’s sexuality at all.

A Good Person follows the story of Kirsten’s unhinged protagonist Lillian, a deeply flawed bisexual millennial that she describes as a “soup of personality disorders”. Lillian is the type of character we love to hate-watch as she charges from one questionable decision to the next leaving mess after mess in her wake. When Lillian’s situationship with Henry leads to a crushing breakup instead of lifelong romance, she reacts the way anyone would– by getting drunk and casting a hex on him. Unfortunately for her, she becomes the prime murder suspect when Henry is found dead the very next day. She really should have gone for one of those protection spells from Etsy after her drunken foray into witchcraft. Instead, Lillian is flung headfirst into a twisting psychological thriller as she seeks to clear her name and discover the truth. 

You can pre-order A Good Person wherever you get your books, but we highly recommend choosing an independent bookstore. We received advance copies and honestly could not put it down. If you enjoy books about unreliable, unlikeable narrators where you’re never quite sure what is going to happen next, you’ll love Kirsten’s A Good Person.

914: Good as Hell with Kirsten King

Honestly, nothing could have prepared us for how gay and campy this movie is. It’s basically leather daddies vs. dykes on bikes in a post-apocalyptic desert. Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, is from The Green Place, a lesbian mecca inhabited entirely by women known as the Vuvalini. She wants nothing more than to escape Immortan Joe’s leather daddy war boy desert land and get back to her girls, but won’t leave without taking all the hottest women from Joe’s harem of breeders with her. 

When Joe realizes that Furiosa has straight up stolen all his hot ladies, he sends his war boys to track her down in a series of action-packed, explosion-filled car chases through the deserted post-apocalyptic wastelands. When she does finally get back to lesbian mecca, everyone is so excited to see her. But things are no longer going well for them in The Green Place, so Furiosa adds a bunch of the dykes on bikes to her pack and heads back to challenge and overthrow Immortan Joe. 

Between the intense sapphic energy of the Vuvalini, Furiosa’s whole shaved head, protector of hot women aesthetic, and the absolute camp that is Immortan Joe and his pack of shiny boy toys, we cannot see this movie as anything other than a gay masterpiece. 

We know one thing for sure, Mad Max: Fury Road Should’ve Been Gay.

We spoke with Shawnee about her journey toward self-acceptance and embracing her Indigenous roots, the barriers for queer artists in country music, and the experience of cultivating chosen family while navigating her own family’s homophobia. Growing up in Canada, she did not have strong connections to her Indigenous ancestry and hid from her own sexuality. When she began to learn from her elders and understand more about Indigenous beliefs, she was able to reconcile what her spirit always knew was true and fully step into her 2 spirit identity. 

Nowadays, Shawnee is loudly out and proud, refusing to shy away from her true self even when confronted by her family’s religious beliefs and intolerant music industry professionals. Ellie bonded with Shawnee over processing emotional, deeply personal experiences through music and Leigh bonded over their shared experience of motherhood. We also talked with Shawnee about how she met her wife (a story that is slightly different depending on whether you ask her or her wife about it) and what it means for her to be 2 spirit.

This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about the worldwide phenomenon that is Heated Rivalry. Whether or not you’ve actually watched a single episode of the show or read the book the series is based on, you’ve definitely heard of these gay hockey boys. Queer shows so rarely make it into the mainstream, and Heated Rivalry has managed to do so in a big way. So big in fact that the lead actors, Hudson Williams (Shane) and Connor Storrie (Ilya) were chosen as official torchbearers for the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony! Even NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani has openly promoted the book series, encouraging New Yorkers to stay home and read the romance during the recent major snowstorm. While we wish lesbians could have our own Heated Rivalry moment, we have to admit that we’re really loving the show and what it is doing for queer representation, especially in the realm of men’s professional sports. 

We can’t talk about Heated Rivalry without talking about the shadow of homophobia that persists for male athletes, causing most to wait until their professional careers have ended to come out of the closet, if they come out at all. The NHL is actually the only men’s pro-league that still has never had a player (current or retired) come out as gay. So, this story centering on gay male hockey players is a really important push for representation in a sport that remains heavily steeped in a culture of homophobia and toxic masculinity. 

While one viral series isn’t going to immediately change that culture, it is impossible to overstate the impact that its massive popularity is having on the sports world. Conservative sports podcaster bros are having to watch the show to discuss it with their listeners, because it has become too huge for even them to ignore. Closeted athletes are being inspired to come out publically following the success of the series, including hockey player Jesse Kortuem who was personally thanked for his bravery by none other than Hudson Williams (Shane) himself. We’re amazed seeing all the positive impacts that a series with only 6 episodes has already made in the queer community and beyond and truly cannot wait to see where Season 2 takes us.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the hit Katseye song, Gabriela, Should’ve Been Gay. Personally, we have not stopped singing this song on a loop since it came out (of a closet made of air). Gabriela is basically an even queerer, more Gen-Z version of Dolly Parton’s Jolene. With two out of six members of the group being openly queer, it was only a matter of time before they released the gayest song we’ve ever heard. We’re honestly not sure what they could’ve been going for with Gabriela if not a bisexual anthem. 

We can’t talk about Gabriela without addressing the sapphic fever dream that is the music video. Katseye may spend the chorus singing “back off of my fella, Gabriela”, but there is not one fella to be seen anywhere on the screen. In fact, they go to extremes to use absolutely anything but a fella, casting a mannequin and a self-driving taxi as placeholders for men. The decision to cast Jessica Alba and zero men feels deliberately gay, especially when paired with the least subtle lesbian imagery we’ve ever seen. These girls are literally spitting up flower petals and stroking cats while singing about how much they want to climb Gabriela like a tree. 

The lyrics for Gabriela are equally as gay as the music video, even leaving in the “fella” rhyme. As we did with our Jolene episode, we pick the lyrics apart line by line looking for the gay subtext. In this case, we’re not sure it counts as subtext. It’s just the text at this point. The line, “Skin amaretto / I bet you taste just like the summer / Under the covers” transitioning into a fantasy about a threesome with Gabriela pretty much speaks for itself. This girl is so down bad for Gabriela that she literally passes away with her “heart in the casket” when she sees her. There is perhaps no experience more relatable to lesbians than seeing a woman that is so hot that you just die on the spot. 

We know one thing for sure, Gabriela Should’ve Been Gay.

This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about the lesbian divorce rate discourse. If you spend any time on Reneé Rapp’s internet you likely have seen some variation of this so-called “fact” going around about married lesbian couples having a 70% divorce rate. You may even have taken this fact at face-value. We’re not statisticians and we won’t say we did all that much deep research for this episode, but the claim is absolutely a myth. And it very much misrepresents the findings of that study. The world of statistics is a mess and it’s challenging to get a clear analysis of lesbian divorce rates when women have only been legally allowed to marry each other in this country for like a decade. It’s only natural that it will take time for marriage and divorce rates to stabilize, especially with LGBTQ+ rights in constant flux. With all this confusing back-and-forth, we wanted to take some time to look into some of these studies and give our two cents on what the reasons may be for lesbian couples having a higher divorce rate (if true). 

Through our super professional research we discovered a few factors that might be at play. First off, lesbian couples get married at higher rates than gay male couples and tend to be more monogamous. That coupled with the fact that women of all sexualities are more likely to initiate divorce than men leads us to believe this statistic is likely true. Next, time moves differently for queer couples. We have to consider things that straight couples simply never have to worry about, like whether we’ll legally be allowed to get married if we choose to wait. This can lead to lesbians jumping into marriages faster and discovering incompatibility afterward. We also are shown to be less likely to “stay for the kids”, probably because queer women are more inclined to co-parent equally after a divorce. However, we can’t completely ignore the flaws in the existing studies. Many include queer women who have divorced men in the past or include such a disproportionate sample size of queer couples to straight couples that it invalidates the results.

While there are obvious issues with the way the research has largely been approached (mainly because the straights do not understand how we operate), we will concede that everything seems to be pointing to it being true that lesbians divorce at a higher rate than both heterosexual and gay male couples. However, we also choose to believe the studies that show that lesbian couples have higher rates of satisfaction in our marriages and lower rates of cheating than other couples. Plus, lesbians who do U-Haul prior to getting married have lower rates of divorce. So really, we’re still the best and the straights can just keep crying about it.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with queer actor, writer, and comedian Olivia Levine (@olivialevine19) to talk about why the 1999 cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous, Should’ve Been Gay. If you’re unfamiliar with the plot, it focuses on a small town beauty pageant that turns deadly for the contestants. As with many movies from the 90s, there are a lot of things in the script that just do not hold up in 2026. We still enjoyed this movie overall, but please be aware there is a period-typical amount of ableism, racism, and homophobia. 

One thing that Drop Dead Gorgeous does get right is the casting. This cast is STACKED. If you’re a millennial like us, you’ll recognize so many people in this movie, including Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, and Amy Adams. The acting is impeccable and the characters are delightfully unhinged in the campiest of ways. Being an SBG, the characters aren’t openly queer, but we can honestly say we do not think there is a single straight character in this movie. Unfortunately, interpreting these characters as queer means there is quite a bit of BYG (bury your gays) trope throughout. For a romcom, there is a shocking amount of murders, but they are done in really over the top, comical ways (so it isn’t scary to watch!). 

We know one thing for sure, Drop Dead Gorgeous Should’ve Been Gay.

As far as queer media, it has been a year for the gay boys. From Will’s coming out on Stranger Things to the widespread success of Heated Rivalry, the gay boys are thriving on our screens. Sadly, lesbians have not been quite so lucky. Our biggest rep this year was probably Hunting Wives and we’re not really sure how to feel about that. 

On a personal level, Leigh spent 2025 picking up hobbies like camping now that the girls are old enough, tennis, and crochet. Ellie has had a whirlwind year of travel, working on her upcoming EP with Leigh, and getting engaged. As we look ahead into 2026, we have a few dreams. Firstly, we want the lesbian version of Heated Rivalry. How is it 2026 and we still don’t have a modern Imagine Me & You? On a more personal level, we’re working to find more ways to foster queer community with in-person events and starting to think about our next musical venture. Overall, we really just are focused on finding little pockets of joy in between the constant state of horrors that we are all currently living through.

We would argue that all DCOMs are queer culture, but it was PPP specifically that served as a queer awakening for baby gay Olive. 

In Princess Protection Program, Princess Rosalinda (Demi Lovato) is just about to be crowned Queen when her coronation is attacked, triggering a rescue by an elite protection agency. Now disguised as ordinary American teen Rosie, she is sent to live with the agent who rescued her and his tomboy daughter Carter (Selena Gomez). Carter and Rosie’s enemies-to-lovers dynamic grows as the girls are forced to share their lives and Carter’s bedroom. Unfortunately for us, instead of leaning into Cosie and the ‘and they were roommates’ of it all, we get totally unnecessary high school boy drama.

This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to discuss one of the most talked-about new shows of 2025, Netflix’s The Hunting Wives. This queer-baity murder-mystery novel turned actually-queer TV series, starring Malin Akerman (Margo) and Brittany Snow (Sophie), has completely taken over the gay internet. Whether you’ve seen a single episode of The Hunting Wives or not, you’ve 100% seen gifs of Margo and Sophie that are decidedly not safe for work. We had so many people reach out to us about this show that we simply could not leave 2025 behind without first talking about the Sophie and Margo of it all. 

We don’t have wildly different opinions on shows all that often, but this one had Ellie absolutely obsessed and Leigh feeling deeply uncomfortable 80% of the time (although she still plans to watch the next season!). In Leigh’s defense, the characters are all largely unlikeable hot messes and there are way too many creepy, gross men for any one show. Sophie is an alcoholic that could not make a good decision if her life depended on it and Margo is a predatory sex-addict– oh, and did we mention these wives basically all end up being murderers? Bonkers plot aside, the chemistry between Malin Akerman and absolutely anyone on screen with her at any given time is off the charts. Even if you can’t buy into Margo’s performative sexuality, there is no denying the chemistry between her and Brittany Snow. In season 2 we’re hoping for a lot less of having to watch Margo sleep with high school boys and a lot more of Sophie taking ownership of her choices (and choosing to make gayer ones).

If you’ve been a listener for a while, you know that we’ve had this movie on our SBG list for a very long time. And who better to talk about Burlesque, but an actual burlesque performer? 

As a burlesque performer, Erin is quick to point out that for a movie titled “Burlesque” there is quite literally no actual burlesque to be seen. The performers don’t even take off so much as a glove during their dances, let alone channel the politically charged, feminist, queer energy that is so essential to the art form (And there is absolutely no excuse for the laughable quality of the wigs). While we do find the movie enjoyable, mostly due to the star-studded cast and our undying love for Chaguilera (Cher and Christina Aguilera), it is not an accurate representation of burlesque and feels unnaturally sanitized. Where the movie does get things right is in its RuPaul level campiness, the lesbian-coded male love interest, and the familiar queer storyline (banding together to save a lesbian bar from getting bought out by a terrible straight man– The Flame anyone?).

We both thought this movie was going to be a lighthearted comedy, but after sobbing on a plane Ellie would beg to differ. 

The Wedding Banquet stars Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, and Kelly Marie Tran in what is technically a remake of a film from 1993 (which we have not seen). The story is a bit out-there, but the characters resonate all the same. If you haven’t seen it, the basic plot is this: a gay man and his lesbian bestie decide to help each other out by getting married in exchange for a green card for him and free IVF for her. Honestly with how expensive IVF is (and the general state of immigration), we 1000% get it. There may be nothing more quintessentially 2025 than the gays teaming up to defraud the government and get free healthcare. From the intergenerational trauma and classic mommy-issues to the chosen family and ‘be gay, do crime’ of it all, we think The Wedding Banquet is a must-watch.

This CW spinoff to the infamous Vampire Diaries and The Originals, stars Danielle Rose Russell as Hope Mikaelson, the tribrid daughter of vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson and werewolf Hayley Marshall. If you’ve seen Legacies, you’re probably thinking, “but guys, Legacies has actual gays in it”, and you’re not wrong– but somehow, the representation just falls short. We’re sorry to the Posie shippers and the Landon lovers, but respectfully, making actual unicorn Hope Mikaelson and a boy made of literal mud endgame was inexcusable; and Josie’s storyline is a master class in bisexuality tropes that ends with actor Kaylee Bryant (now Kaylee Kaneshiro) leaving the series early. 

Legacies had a chance to do something so iconic with all-powerful tribrid Hope and twin witches Lizzie and Josie Saltzman. Their backstory is richly built and makes for the perfect slow burn. The girls have all known one another since they were children and Josie even admits to having had a crush on Hope in the past. We could have gotten the most powerful love triangle between Hope, Josie, and Lizzie but instead of giving fans the ship we wanted, they gave us Landon. I mean what was the point of telling us that Josie was into Hope and then going nowhere with it? The tendency of shows to shy away from allowing their titular character to be queer in favor of tossing in some random man is exhausting. Let your main characters be gay, please! Especially if those characters are deeply complex, highly powerful women that are very clearly into one another the entire time. 

We know one thing for sure, Legacies Should’ve Been Gay(er).

Marita began her Ultimatum journey when she was just 24 years old, and now at 27 she credits her experiences on the show with helping her to grow, create an incredible community, and rediscover her self-worth. Although she did not come away from the show with “her person”, she walked away with a renewed sense of self-love and the understanding that she didn’t need to beg someone to love her. The right person would just do it naturally. Ending up with Britney as a trial marriage partner may not have been what either of them planned for, but it turned out to be the best thing for Marita to see her own energy reflected back like a mirror. 

It’s easy to end up in a relationship that feels comfortable enough to stay, but still isn’t quite right for you. We may see going on the Ultimatum as a really drastic measure for fixing a relationship, but sometimes it takes blowing everything up to see what remains. Seeing how simple it was for Britney to show up and consider her in the small day-to-day moments was a huge eye-opener and helped to break Marita out of a cycle that without the show, she may still have been trapped in today.

Hannah Montana follows the chaotic double life of Miley Stewart (played by real life queer icon Miley Cyrus) as she navigates being a “regular high schooler” while hiding her secret drag identity as pop star Hannah Montana from everyone except her very best girlfriend, Lilly. This girl spends 4 whole seasons literally going in and out of the largest closet we’ve ever seen, a closet she and Lilly go in specifically to transform into their flamboyant alter egos, Hannah Montana and Lola Luftnagle. Miley’s wig collection likely rivals Chappell Roan’s and we all had a pair of those baggy cargo shorts that Lilly was always rocking while skateboarding into view. Yet, Disney still forced us to watch 4 seasons of Miley and Lilly’s chemistry being tossed aside for lame, forgettable boys.

Her new nonfiction essay collection, Little Deaths All in a Row: Essays on Sex and Death, was released in September. We chat with Elizabeth about some super casual, lighthearted topics like the link between the female orgasm and the moment of birth or death, the age-old question of what happens after we die, how birth and death open channels to freely give and receive love, and the philosophical debate over whether humans can ever experience true reality. 

Elizabeth wrote Little Deaths All in a Row in the aftermath of a near-fatal motorcycle accident that sent her mind into a panicked state while her body was in the literal process of dying. Although she survived this brush with death, Elizabeth was determined to examine her fear and attempt to overcome it so that the next time she met death, she’d be able to pass on gracefully. She explains that while she did not have a “near death experience” of the other side like some people do in terrible accidents, she does believe state of mind during the moment of death has an impact on what comes after. In order to get more intimate with death, Elizabeth began doing energy healing work on hospice patients. She expected to heal her fear of dying, but instead healed something she had not realized she was afraid of; a fear of love (she still fears death as does every human whether they want to admit it or not).

Together they take a nostalgic trip down memory lane to the late 90s to talk about why the 1999 romcom Never Been Kissed Should’ve Been Gay.

If you’re a younger gay, you may not have seen this 90s classic; but we bet you’ll recognize the major names in the cast. We’re talking Drew Barrymore, David Arquette, Molly Shannon, Octavia Spencer, and freaking Jessica Alba all in the same movie. If that doesn’t convince you to watch it at least one dozen times, we don’t know what will. The plot follows Josie, a journalist going undercover at a high school for a story, as she experiences being retraumatized by the popular girls, falling in love with her teacher, and competing for prom queen. 

As much as we genuinely adore this movie, it is impossible not to talk about the ocean of reasons why Never Been Kissed is not the wholesome, family-friendly movie it was marketed as and is instead highly problematic. We get that Josie is 25 and only pretending to be a high schooler for the sake of her journalism career; but her teacher does not know that and has no reason to think she isn’t a 17 year old student. Yet, they are the main romance that the audience is very much supposed to be rooting for. Thankfully, we have our gay glasses on and with a few little changes to the script we can see our path to a much less problematic, and much, much queerer movie. After all, there’s something pretty queer already about a 25 year old woman who has never had a romantic kiss or felt sparks from any guy. The school-sized closet Josie is hiding out in is truly made of glass.

We talk in-depth about Daviel’s new series The Lovers, a 7-episode series available on Prime Video, that she brought to life during the pandemic lockdowns. 

The Lovers follows the story of a laid off sex-worker who falls for a fitness witch in 2020’s L.A. When asked her elevator pitch for the series, Daviel explained that it’s basically a kinkier, gayer Skins and after watching it, we fully agree with that description. Prior to creating The Lovers, Daviel had a lot of experience with writing, directing and producing, but with the barriers of the lockdowns, she decided to also star in the series, a first that helped her realize she actually wanted to do what her character was doing. Through the assistance of the kink community in L.A., Daviel was able not only to create her series, but to connect with the network she would need to break into the adult entertainment industry and co-found DAYLiGHT FiLMs.

We really enjoyed this extremely cringey comedy, but we wish it had gone further with Ingrid and Taylor’s relationship. Ingrid’s behavior was unhinged, for sure; but it wasn’t Saltburn level unhinged. 

For those who have not seen the movie, the plot centers around Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) who moves to LA specifically to stalk the Instagram influencer (Elizabeth Olsen) that she is obsessed with. While we fully understand the point they are trying to make about parasocial relationships and social media, we can’t help but root for Ingrid the entire time. She may have gone about everything in a really convoluted way, but Ingrid does love Taylor (unlike Taylor’s husband, who seems to hate everything about her). It feels a lot like Killing Eve, where you can’t help but root for Villanelle to “get the girl” even as she is killing people left and right.

This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Janelle Perez (@janelleperezfl), the Executive Director of LPAC (@teamlpac), the only organization in the U.S. dedicated entirely to electing LGBTQ+ women and non-binary leaders. 

LPAC is a nonpartisan organization born out of the realization that the majority of the financial contributions made to LGBTQ+ organizations were disproportionately going to cis white men. A group of lesbians recognized this disparity and decided to try to increase equity in politics by electing a more representative government. When LPAC was founded in 2012, there was only one queer woman running for office. Just 12 years later, in 2024 there were over 200 queer women and non-binary candidates. And not only are more candidates running, but more are winning too! LPAC had an impressive 74% win-rate in 2024. 

Janelle explains what it takes to become an LPAC endorsed-candidate (main answer: BE GAY!), why queer women statistically win more candidacy races than gay men do, and how a life-altering cancer diagnosis brought her parents from homophobic to “we want you to have your wedding on our front lawn” in record-time. Although she is now 10-years cancer free, Janelle’s coming out journey, decision to run for State Senate in FL, and involvement with LPAC are all interwoven with her diagnosis. 

At 28 years old, Janelle was diagnosed with 2 types of terminal cancer. This could’ve easily derailed her life, but instead it was the catalyst that brought her family together and gave her the itch to get involved in local politics. Janelle shares that queer women typically run for office for mission-driven reasons rather than a desire for power. She herself ran on the basis of expanding access to healthcare for people in her home state after receiving an egregiously large bill for a cancer treatment. After her experience running for office, she pivoted to the organization that had backed her candidacy, LPAC, eventually stepping into the role of Executive Director.

Chicago is a millennial casting wet-dream with Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah, Mýa and a tragically underutilized Lucy Liu. If you haven’t seen the movie (or the 1975 stage show it’s based on– hot take but the movie is better), it’s essentially Orange is the New Black: The Musical.

Although Chicago puts our stars Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly into the overtly heteronormative world of the 1920s, there is little to no hetero explanation for 99% of the plot. The story is set in a time period when people could end up in jail just for being gay, so it honestly does not surprise us that Queen Latifah is essentially running a lesbian harem on Murderesses Row. Sure, these specific women are in jail because they killed their husbands (and side-pieces), but is that not the gayest reason to be in jail? In fact, we reckon Murderesses Row functions like a 1920s HER. If we had a choice between marrying a man or killing said man, going to jail and getting to hook up with Velma freaking Kelly, call us Piper Chapman because we’re skipping GO and doing the Cell Block Tango.

When Michelle told us she wanted to talk about The Ultimatum, we were immediately on board. We love mess just as much as the next gays; and season 2 really went off the rails in ways that were at best hilarious and at worst downright unsettling (like, we hope Netflix paid for their therapy unsettling). This extreme level of messiness adds an authenticity to the cast that actually feels like a move in the right direction for queer representation. They’re not the usual sanitized “love-is-love” mainstream gays. Instead the cast are real queer people, appearing as they are, un-healed trauma, complicated families and all. And we think their bravery deserves a lot of credit. 

Now if we could just get a host that wouldn’t be so scared to take her claws out and ask the real questions, we’d have a master class for young queers in recognizing red flags, navigating conflict effectively (and ineffectively), determining consent and boundaries, and questioning heteronormative relationship values.

Although Friends is problematic for so many reasons (and time has not done it any favors), there were still moments in the series that were groundbreaking for the queer community. In 1996 Carol and Susan’s wedding was the first lesbian wedding ever on American tv and, unsurprisingly, 2 network affiliates refused to air the episode. But even a lesbian wedding could not save the show from being aggressively heteronormative in ways that we truly believe make our whole generation eligible for compensation.

There really is no bigger example of a show just overflowing with comp-het energy than Friends. You’re expecting us to believe that there exists a group of six friends in New York City and not one of them is gay? One of them is quite literally a soap-opera actor with a live-in longterm boyfriend, but somehow even he is not gay? We could’ve had the ultimate “and they were roommates” of shows, but instead we got a full decade of being gaslit into thinking Ross was a “nice guy”. And don’t even get us started on how dirty they did Janice.

Robyn is a prolific voice actor, as well as an educational creator on TikTok where they make videos with their wife about everything from exploring gender and sexuality to navigating physical and mental health challenges. 

We talk with Robyn about LGBTQ+ representation across media, the differences between realistic/accurate representation and idealistic representation, and what it means to actually become the representation they wish they’d seen when they were younger. In examining the intersection of sapphic and non-binary identities, Robyn discusses the (unfortunately unsurprising) amount of backlash they’ve received online for explaining the meanings of words like ‘sapphic’ using gender-inclusive (and completely accurate) language. From there Robyn dives into explaining their non-binary identity and why their marriage doesn’t feel particularly ‘sapphic’ due to Robyn’s “Gomez Addam’s”-style masculinity, and we consider our own gender identities– concluding that Leigh’s gender is “Tiny Dad Mom” and Ellie’s is “Rainbow Unicorn Overalls”.

Honestly, there is shockingly little that needs to be changed for Titanic to be a full-on queer masterpiece. Jack is already so androgynous that he’s giving Gentleman Jack and Rose… well, she’d literally rather fling herself into the freezing sea than marry a man. Everything– from the directorial choices made (especially the framing of Jack and Rose’s sex scene), the casting decisions (Leonardo DiTWINKrio was truly a bizarre choice for a 90’s male romantic lead), and the lesbian savior-complex audacity of Jack sacrificing himself for a woman he kissed for the first time only 6 hours prior– combines to make Titanic a film that truly feels gay. Whether you were a young femme in the 90s feeling seen by Kate WinsLEZ’s portrayal of sad-girl Rose or a young androgynous queer feeling inspired by Leo’s depiction of Jack and his “Hey Mamas” energy, Titanic had something for everyone. 

We talk about the few tweaks we would make to the movie, the added layer of complexity the story gains when viewing Jack as either an androgynous lesbian or a young trans man, the ‘eat the rich’ of it all, and why we truly believe both Jack and Rose could’ve fit on that ‘door’ at the end.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that thinks, “It’s not the time” to be glorifying traditional heteronormative values. This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are back from summer break and more unfiltered than ever! 

We have not even been away that long and in the meantime a really insidious conservative “family values” vibe has begun to spread through the queer community. Prominent queer celebs (cough Fletcher and JoJo Siwa) who built their brands on the backs of a predominantly queer audience are “reverse” coming-out publically as dating cishet men while our rights are crumbling all around us. It’s giving ‘I’m one of the good gays’ and we are really not here for it at this time in our political landscape. Keep in mind, we recorded this episode before the Betty Who debacle and we didn’t even need that to fill an hour-long podcast on the ‘tradwife’ of it all. 

Now before you get out your pitchforks, we have ZERO issues with bisexuals. Our world of algorithms and click bait isn’t really keen on nuance and this issue requires it in spades. We are not denying that biphobia exists in the lesbian community and that lesbians need to do better; AND it is also true that queerness is about more than just who you’re dating. Like it or not, there is a political and cultural component to queerness and you cannot just opt out and expect to not piss off your fanbase. There is nothing wrong with being a queer woman and dating a cishet man, that in itself does not make you less queer. However, there is something deeply jarring about the sharp pivot from Fletcher straddling women on stage in leather pants for years to Fletcher making the very calculated decision to release “Boy” (the 2025 ‘trad’ equivalent of “I Kissed A Girl”) as the single for her album during one of the most politically fraught Pride months in recent history. 

When highly visible queer women like Fletcher and JoJo Siwa are behaving more “trad” than the Mormon wives on TikTok (you know the ones) at the exact same time that the Supreme Court is about to potentially rip away our right to get married, there’s a serious problem. Between the decline of political queerness, the rise of traditional gender roles (where did all the “bi wife energy” kings go?), and whatever the hell is going on with all these butter-churning performatively queer “pick-me gays” taking influencer jobs away from hard-working cottagecore dykes, the overall vibe is a mess™ right now. We don’t love that the world appears to be burning down around us; but, hey, at least we have each other.

You might know this week's guest, Tracy E. Gilchrist (@tracyegilchrist), as "the queen of queer media" or simply "the holding space lady." She reached internet fame last year when her interview with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande went viral during the Wicked press tour. But it goes without saying that Tracy is a whole person, who has lived a whole life, outside of that one video. Tracy has worked in queer media since the 90s - specifically covering queer entertainment and pop culture news for outlets like The Advocate and Out Magazine. We discuss how she ended up in this position of having basically interviewed every queer-adjacent person in Hollywood, first crushes / kisses / girlfriends, and the lesbian pop culture moments that shaped us.

In Act II, we break down her viral moment and everything that comes along with that. Who had she seen holding space for the lyrics of defying gravity? When did she first clock the finger-hold? What does she really think of Ariana and Cynthia, and have they exchanged words since? We get into it…

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Lauren Chan (@lcchan), a Canadian model, TV personality, entrepreneur, and former fashion editor. She is also an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ and AAPI representation as well as an expert in the size-inclusive fashion world. 

If you happened to walk by a newsstand recently and took enough time away from petting the bodega cat to peruse the magazines, you likely saw Lauren. She made queer history with her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit appearance as the very first out lesbian to appear on the cover! Can you believe it took until now for an out lesbian to be featured? While we may think Sports Illustrated is a male-gaze aligned space, Lauren says that’s what makes it so perfect for these kinds of stories. By meeting people where they are and introducing them to concepts and perspectives they may not have had a reason to think about, Lauren provides a gateway to nuanced conversations and increased empathy. Sure, straight men may initially buy the magazine for the bikini pics, but if they stay for the coming out stories that can go a long way in changing the narrative toward LGBTQ+ people. 

Lauren came out in 2023, incredibly publicly, in her first appearance in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit where she made history as the first lesbian rookie! She discovered her sexuality in a very familiar way– with the lesbian masterdoc in hand, podcasts about coming out later in life on repeat, and an expanse of free time provided by the pandemic lockdowns. From divorcing her husband to now being engaged to be married again (but, to a woman) the short years since coming out have been a real whirlwind for Lauren. 

We are obsessed with how Lauren takes the media’s long history of objectifying women and flips it on its head. She may look like just another hot girl, but Lauren is a catalyst for change, inclusivity, self-love, body positivity, and sheer gay audacity.

823: Wonder Cover with Lauren Chan

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about the 2025 Black Mirror episode: Hotel Reverie, for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. 

Hotel Reverie stars Issa Rae, Emma Corrin, and Awkwafina in a bittersweet sapphic story that centers around a sci-fi style high-tech simulation of an old 1940’s classic film, “Hotel Reverie”. The premise is that Hollywood A-lister Brandy Friday (Issa Rae) will be playing the lead role of Dr. Alex Palmer (in spite of the original actor being a white man) in the remake; and to do so, she will be sent inside a fully immersive simulation of the film complete with “people” who think they are real, but are they? 

Of course as soon as Brandy enters the simulation, she begins to fall for Clara, Dr. Palmer’s love interest in the original. Initially, Clara sticks to the script, but as the movie progresses, she begins to completely break the plot with her uncontainable gayness. The explanation is that the actor who played Clara, Dorothy Chambers, put so much of herself into the performance that “echoes” of Dorothy exist now in the simulated version of Clara. With the influence of Dorothy’s memories and a growing attraction to Brandy, Clara begins to be more and more openly gay and that is actually bad for Brandy– if she doesn’t manage to stick the landing and say the final line of the movie, she could be trapped forever in Hotel Reverie. Plus there’s that sticky little feature that if Brandy were to be killed in the simulation, she would die in real life. But for all the danger, Brandy cares about only one thing, Clara, their love, and the little simulated life they build while the movie is “frozen”. 

We talk about the unavoidable comparisons to San Junipero, the many, many glaring plot holes throughout the episode, and the implications of Black Mirror consistently burying their gays and also only allowing gay characters to exist in simulations, video games, computers, etc. Additionally, we discuss the unsatisfying ending and why it didn’t feel as resolved or happy as it did for our lesbians in San Junipero.

If you’ve seen Rough Night, you’re probably thinking– but that movie already IS gay. The lesbian couple, Blair and Frankie (#Blankie!), should qualify it for a Lez-ssential! And you’re right, the movie is already pretty gay and we do love #Blankie; but it is honestly impossible for us to ignore Alice’s BIG LESBIAN CRUSH on her best friend Jess. Alice literally murders the first guy we see try to touch Jess. And Jess choosing to marry a straight up diaper man isn’t exactly a strong endorsement for her heterosexuality either. 

We talk about gay magnetism a lot, and it is inconceivable to us that this friend group only has 2 gay girls in it. We’re not sure why the movie is trying so hard to pretend that the whole group is mostly straight women, but we’re not buying it. 

We know one thing for sure, Rough Night Should’ve Been Gay(er).

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that still pledges allegiance to Heda Lexa.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) hangs out solo with Regan Latimer (@thereganlatimer), director of the documentary Bulletproof: A Lesbian’s Guide to Surviving the Plot (@bulletproofdoc). We’ve talked a lot on this podcast about the longstanding BYG (bury your gays) trope in media and the “cancel your gays” version of today. The absolute slaughter of 2016 is what ultimately led us down the path of creating our own queer musicals with guaranteed happy endings and zero dead gays. Regan was inspired in a similar way, after one straw too many– the brutal killing of Denise on The Walking Dead. She decided to turn that outrage and pain into fuel for exploring the BYG trope, learning why these plot decisions are made, and even exploring the psychology behind why lesbian character deaths impact LGBTQ+ viewers so strongly. 

For Bulletproof, Regan spoke with filmmakers, screenwriters, passionate fans, showrunners, and television industry professionals about their experiences and perceptions on lesbian representation in the media. They wanted to look not only at where representation stands now, but at where it started and where it may be headed. When the pendulum for LGBTQ+ rights and societal acceptance swings in either direction, the media landscape reflects those changes. The few positive examples of queer representation we have on screen right now are as a result of projects greenlit before the pendulum began its broad backswing. Regan reminds us to enjoy the representation we have right now, to cherish the precious happy moments of Ellie and Dina while we still can. 

After all, the pendulum swings as society does; and we are at a particularly scary time for queer rights and acceptance, especially here in the United States. The real worry is about what types of projects may be getting greenlit right now, whose voices and stories are allowed to be told and amplified, and whether that push we saw after 2016 for more diversity in writer’s rooms continues or is abandoned. We’re already seeing more and more shows with prominent queer characters get unceremoniously cancelled– but it is not all doom and gloom. Even with queer rights and representation sliding backward, there remains more lesbian representation than we ever had growing up. With any luck, younger gays will never have to know what its like to not see themselves on their screens, even if the only representation left is, to Regan’s dismay and Leigh’s chaotic delight, problematic queer people on reality television shows.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants to wish everyone a Happy Pride Month, because queer joy is resistance. 

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Jennie Wetter, the Director of rePROS Fight Back (@reprosfb), an initiative that fights for sexual and reproductive health rights and justice issues. Jennie is also the creator and host of the rePROs Fight Back podcast. 

Among the many things that rePROS does to fight back is to grade each of the 50 states on access to reproductive and sexual health rights and care (including access to gender-affirming care). They have recently released their 13th annual (fully interactive!) 50-state Report Card and spoiler alert: The United States as a whole gets an F. Fair warning, looking up your state’s grade might make your heart hurt (unless you’re like Leigh and live in one of the 5 states that actually got an A). 

We talk with Jennie about what things have been like for rePROS since the reversal of Roe and whether our Gilead robes absolutely have to be red (it’s just not our color). Although it can be really easy to become overwhelmed by how bad things are, Jennie explains that there’s actually a lot to be hopeful about. Between the abortion funds and local clinics there are quite a lot of resources on the ground to help people access care, even in states with strict legislation. Medication abortion remains available and is a fully safe option. With the recent attacks on trans rights, initiatives like rePROS are fighting even harder to ensure access to gender affirming care for all who need it, including minors. Even though at the federal level, things are bleak (that report card is a real eye-opener), there are ways to fight back at the state-level and getting involved locally can really help keep that feeling of doom at bay. 

Jennie reminds us that no one person can do or know everything (even if Ellie’s ADHD really wants her to try). Figure out which one cause you want to put your energy toward and focus solely on that. Even Jennie doesn’t know everything, but she makes herself a trusted resource by knowing what direction to point people in when they come to her for help. Take a deep breath and remember, you don’t have to take on everything yourself! Find your lane and follow it and know that others are doing the same in the lanes you didn’t choose. Burning yourself out trying to do it all won’t help anyone and certainly won’t help you feel any better. We see you, we appreciate you, and we want you to remember: no act of resistance is too small.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that would probably be down to f*ck a dragon. 

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2024 Netflix dark fantasy film Damsel Should’ve Been Gay. Damsel stars Millie Bobby Brown and is perhaps the only movie that dares to ask the question, what if the princess’ love interest is a dragon? It’s like if Fiona got thrown into that tower in Shrek and then fell in love with Dragon instead of the ogre that rescued her. Shrek 2 would’ve gone A LOT differently. 

If you haven’t seen Damsel (and even if you have), you do not want to miss Leigh’s recap where it takes us approximately 12 minutes to get 4 seconds into the story because (in our defense) the movie starts with what is essentially a thirst-trap of Millie Bobby Brown’s character Elodie chopping wood in the frozen tundra with the most jacked arms you’ve ever seen. She may not be wearing a flannel, but that is a whole lez. And you’d be surprised how important it is to the plot that Elodie be freaking jacked. Honestly the level of suspension of disbelief we would have to employ to watch this movie without that wood-chopping scene is nearly insurmountable. Elodie survives not only a 125 foot drop into the dragon pit, but then gets set on fire like 1000 times, hauls her body up solid rock walls with nothing but a knife, and is able to eventually reach freedom (for all of 5 minutes before having to go back to the pit to rescue her sister). But she really does make it out, a feat that was impossible for the previous princesses that had been tossed to the dragon (because only a lesbian could survived any of this!) 

The best thing about this movie is that it doesn’t do that obnoxious redemption arc for the prince where the obviously lesbian-coded princess gets stuck with him in the end. Instead, Elodie rides off into the sunset on the back of the dragon, enemies-to-lovers style, and we straight up watch that milk-toast man get burned alive.

We know one thing for sure, Damsel Should’ve Been Gay.

This movie is 90 minutes of Anne Hathaway (Josephine) and Rebel Wilson (Penny) flirting in the French Riviera while occasionally committing crimes against men with the help of Jo’s policewoman lover (that we’re 99% sure lives with her) and a sassy old gay butler. If you’re looking for a comedy with sapphic energy that doesn’t really require any brain power and isn’t incomprehensibly 3 hours long, The Hustle should be at the top of your list.

This may be a Should’ve Been Gay, but lesbihonest, there is not one straight woman in the entire movie. For women who spend a lot of their time seducing men, they really could not be less interested in them. Hell, Josephine doesn’t even sleep with any of them! Only Anne Hathaway could convince three obscenely rich men to propose to her without even putting out. She is maybe too powerful– we didn’t even flinch at that toilet french fry scene. When Jo isn’t radiating sex (without actually having any) in order to swindle some rich guy out of millions, she’s parading Penny around on a leash to assert her dominance. Hot.

While the vibes for Penny are more chaos-bisexual, Josephine is giving full high femme, lesbian dominatrix energy and we are SEATED. Together, they make a hilarious and surprisingly effective conwoman team. And what could be better than sapphics swindling immoral rich men out of their millions? By the end of the film they are in a full on power-throuple with a man that gives even Penny a run for her money on bi-vibes (and who is a direct descendant of someone whose crime code-name is Medusa- yep, the man-hating snake-haired woman who turns men to stone with one look). 

As we watched the newly formed polycule sail off into the beautiful Capri sunset with their stolen riches, we just had one thought– 

The Hustle Should’ve Been Gay.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Devon Matthews, the Head of Programs for Rainbow Railroad (@rainbowrailroad), a global nonprofit that helps LGBTQ+ people get to safety worldwide. 

We talk with Devon about how Rainbow Railroad got started (spoiler alert: it took a LOT of gay audacity), what types of requests for help they receive, and how they organize with other nonprofit organizations and even government leaders to make the seemingly impossible, possible. We also discuss the challenges for Devon and the rest of the Rainbow Railroad’s staff of tireless advocates in providing trauma-informed care as people who mostly come from trauma-backgrounds themselves. 

Content warning for discussions of trauma related to queer and trans identity, situations involving domestic and state-sponsored violence, and the distressing realities of forced displacement.

Through the support of partner organizations on the ground in countries all across the globe, Rainbow Railroad has the extraordinary task of connecting queer and trans people who are in great need with critical resources and a pathway to safety. When a request for help comes in, the case managers work to meet individuals where they are and devise a plan specific to their unique circumstances. The realities of assisting a queer youth who is trying  to escape from domestic violence at home in a country where being gay is all-out illegal to assisting a trans adult in Europe get to safety are vastly different and require different approaches. Devon explains that the more visible the organization becomes, the more requests from LGBTQ+ people in serious crises come in– a sad fact of Rainbow Railroad’s growth is that it is needed at all (and at an almost unimaginable scale!). 

With over 120 million displaced people worldwide, there is an immense need for Rainbow Railroad and their partner organizations. But they can’t do it alone. The time is always now. There have never been a larger amount of requests for help from Rainbow Railroad than after the recent election results right here in the United States.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) hangs out with returning guest, stand-up comedian Kia Barnes (@kiacomedy), to talk about why Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2 Should’ve Been Gay. Ellie (@elliebrigida) couldn’t make the recording, and she’s devastated to have missed it, especially since Inside Out 2 was the movie she and Bailey saw on their very first date.

From the second Val glides onto the screen, it’s instant gay panic, from Riley and every emotion in her head. Whether it’s Anxiety (voiced by queer queen Maya Hawke), Envy (played by none other than Ayo Edebiri!), or Ennui (channeling the energy of a deeply disaffected gay French man), Riley’s internal world is working overtime. Add a suspiciously queer-coded coach to the mix (we’re pretty sure her wife is hidden in the background somewhere) and the gay subtext is basically screaming at us in every scene.

Kia shares how deeply she related to Riley, as a baby gay who just wanted to impress the older, cooler butch girls. She even smoked a cigarette (as an asthmatic!!) to get a girl’s attention. Riley trying to fit in with the butch boys club? Been there.

We also talk about how hard Disney tried to scrub the gay out… and failed spectacularly. From the queer-coded coach to the LGBTQ+ cast to the metaphorical coming-out arc hidden inside a vault, Inside Out 2 practically demands a rainbow overlay.

And let’s not forget “Beardville”, Riley’s imaginary Mount Crushmore of forced heterosexuality, where she literally has to carve boys into stone so she doesn’t forget them. Subtle? Absolutely not. Accurate? Tragically, yes.

Then there’s the “big dark secret” locked deep in Riley’s mental vault. It’s glowing purple, heavily guarded, and very clearly not ready to come out yet. We all know what it is (spoiler: it’s lesbianism), but we’d genuinely love to know what straight people think it is. We also break down the tension between Riley and Grace, whose jealous-ex energy is off the charts. Whether Riley’s feelings are mutual is still TBD, but that tension? So real.

From baby gay chaos to closet metaphors and a whole lot of repressed sapphic energy, we know one thing for sure: Inside Out 2 Should’ve Been Gay.

At a time when book bans, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, and chillingly fascist rhetoric are once again becoming the norm, Eric’s archive provides a pivotal look into our collective past so that we can all be better prepared for the road ahead. The struggle sadly isn’t new; but with a little courage and a lot of community, we believe that queer people will always persevere. 

Eric shares the origins of Making Gay History (which originally started as a book in the late 80s!), the importance of preserving queer voices, and the deep responsibility of memory work in the face of erasure. This episode is both a tribute to the ancestors that fought for our rights and a call to action: to listen, to remember, and to keep telling our stories, especially now.

If you are a deeply devoted Catholic, we apologize in advance, because this episode might have you running for the confessional. 

Whether you’ve seen Conclave or not, we’re almost 100% sure that you have seen at least one version of Mean Girls, so the plot should feel familiar to you. This movie gives viewers a peek behind the curtain into the secretive and ancient practice of electing a new Pope. This might not on the surface sound particularly gay to you, but that is where you would be wrong. We don’t know why SNL is sleeping on such high quality content, but we would give anything for a Love Island-ified Conclave skit. There is no chance in our minds that all these men were shut into a room together and no one hooked up. The entire film is just spilled tea after spilled tea as we follow 108 men who normally don’t get a chance to see one another sequestered in one place. It’s basically just a big sleepover full of hot goss and the most dramatic b*tches you’ve ever seen. These cardinals are so dramatic they don’t even wipe the dust off their robes after getting literally bombed. 

We talk with Mari about which cardinal we think aligns with which Mean Girls character, why the intersex Pope reveal at the end of the movie felt too rushed, and how the Conclave marketing team missed a huge opportunity in not advertising directly to the gays.

Come with us on a journey back to 2010, when television seasons were 26 episodes long and showrunners were just starting to figure out how to harness the power of social media to engage with fandoms in a big way. Pretty Little Liars itself does not age all that well in many ways, especially in the treatment of their one and only trans character; but back in the 2010s it was actually considered pretty progressive for having several queer characters and a lesbian showrunner. If you were queer or questioning in the early aughts you 1000% knew about Shay Mitchell as sporty lesbian Emily Fields who seemingly turned every woman within a 5 mile radius of her gay. If you are a lesbian of a certain age, Emily likely played a role in your own coming out journey too.

For those of you who were part of the #BooRadleyVanCullen (like Leigh), you may recall more of the social fandom experience than you do the plot. Before Twitter became the cesspool it is today, there were the golden days of weekly live tweeted episodes of PLL with the cast members, the showrunner and the writers. The extremely unhinged plot made it the perfect group-viewing show and we highly recommend that if you have never watched PLL, you watch with a friend or three. While we do talk about a lot of the major plot points, the whole series is just too convoluted for us to really spoil anything for you. Even hardcore fans like John find something new in each rewatch.

This movie answers the question, “What if the entire story behind the crucifixion was really just about Judas having a crush on Jesus?”. 

Jesus Christ Superstar is a campy masterpiece with a soundtrack that honestly slaps. It features the most dragtastic version of white Jesus we have ever seen surrounded by a bunch of leather daddies in the desert. While there are a few things in the film that had us side-eyeing the 70s (and Leigh still isn’t 100% convinced the movie she saw was not actually a porn parody), according to resident researcher Alyse, the story is actually pretty Biblically accurate. 

From the homoerotic undertones of Jesus turning to all his boyfriends with a loaf of bread and being like, “eat me”, to the oddly Gelphie-coded relationship between Judas and Jesus, we explore how much better religion can be when it’s queer.

When you think of queerness and Encanto the first character to come to mind is probably Jess’s character Luisa, the hunky beefcake older sister with a heart of gold. And yea, obviously she’s gay, but we’d argue that Luisa is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the queerness of Encanto. From the magic “miracle” powers bestowed on each member of the Madrigal family to the colorful, rainbow-filled casita where they reside, this film is practically overflowing with queer energy. There’s Camilo, a shapeshifter who frequently changes gender; Bruno, the misunderstood outcast who just wanted to be accepted by his family; Mirabelle, the main character whose coming out didn’t quite go as planned; and of course Isabela, the “perfect” (closeted femme) sister who is hiding her true self out of fear of ending up rejected like Bruno. 

One thing is for sure, Encanto Should’ve Been Gay.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about the overall experience of aging as a queer person in an ever-changing society. With Ellie and Leigh both having birthdays around the time of recording this episode, they thought it would be interesting to take a look at the nonlinear experience of aging and the differences between coming out back in the day and coming out now. The entire concept of queerness has evolved and changed throughout time both as a political identity and a sexual one. There is widely used language and understanding of queerness and queer identities that just did not exist in the same way when Ellie and Leigh were gaybies. 

When Leigh got married, she was only able to do so because gay marriage had been legalized in the state of Massachusets (not the entire country, literally just that state). Back then, even just being able to get married at all was astounding and a huge win. And honestly, that was not that long ago! Ellie talks about how when she first showed her girlfriend The L Word, Bailey asked her if Bette and Tina were married. This feels like a wild question to us, because of course we know that it was illegal to be married when this show was actually being made and aired. But for younger gays that have grown up with gay marriage being legal for the majority of their lives, that huge shift in queer rights and overall societal attitude toward the community that we experienced just doesn’t register in the same way for them. 

With the landscape of queer rights being continually nonlinear and unfortunately experiencing a backslide at the moment in many areas across the globe, it is so important for queer people of all ages to share our experiences with one another.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with comedian, actor, and writer Jordan Myrick (@jordanmyr1ck), to talk about why Venom Should’ve Been Gay. If you’re familiar with Venom from the MCU, the comic books are canonically quite gay, but the movies try (and fail) to tone down the queerness. If you are entirely unfamiliar with Eddie and his sassy, affectionate, shape-shifting alien boyfriend, buckle up; because you are in for a wild ride. 

Is there anything queerer than being so attached to your partner that you literally have to do everything together (in the same body) or else you’ll die? We think not. As lesbians, we honestly have to give it to Veddie; because they are taking UHauling to a whole other level. Eddie and Venom are full-on biologically made for one another; they are compatible at the most basic cellular level. Venom may be a symbiote, but he can’t successfully merge with just anyone. His bond with Eddie is rare and special (and beautiful!). There is truly no straight explanation for how obsessed Venom is with Eddie. He is constantly trying to sacrifice himself to save Eddie and when they do briefly break up in the 2nd film, Venom is so distraught that he goes on a bender (at a freaking gay bar!). 

Aside from the “urge to merge” of it all, Venom themself is a nonbinary queer icon. At first glance you may think Venom is clearly a guy, but Venom is really anything it wants to be. He tries on multiple different gender expressions, even taking on a curvy, feminine form when merging with Eddie’s ex-girlfriend Annie- which he pretty much immediately uses to make out with Eddie (hello, Xena, we’ve seen this before). These two may bicker a lot, but they are quite obviously madly in love. We are convinced that a gay person was in that writer’s room, because Veddie’s banter reaches levels of camp that a straight person would just never think up.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with academic librarian Amber and nonprofit witch Lindsay of the Queer Liberation Library (@queerliblib). 

The QLL got its start in 2023 and has since curated a collection of 2,715 unique LGBTQ+ ebooks and audiobooks accessible to anyone in the United States (regardless of zip code) for the low, low cost of absolutely nothing! Once you sign up (for free!), you will be able to check out ebooks and audiobooks from an ever-expanding collection through Libby. They have everything from popular queer adult fiction to LGBTQ+ poetry, manga, and children’s books. In today’s environment of book bans and censorship, projects like the Queer Liberation Library are more important than ever as they provide access to titles that local physical library branches may not be able to stock.

We talk with Amber and Lindsay about how the Queer Liberation Library got its start, going from “7 friends in a trench coat” with a big dream to create a nonprofit to “7 friends in a trench coat” with an extensive, fully functional digital library. We also talk about how the curation process works, the intricacies of licensing restrictions on book borrowing, and all the little behind the scenes things that make the project possible. One of the best things about QLL is the accessibility. While there are already well-established physical libraries dedicated to LGBTQ+ books, they are not accessible for someone like a queer or trans youth with unsupportive parents or someone living in a more restrictive state where the physical libraries may have less ability to combat queer censorship. Digital collections like the one at QLL are lifesavers in these cases because they can be accessed for free from anywhere in the US, providing a way around any potential local physical barriers to access.

You can join the QLL today and start borrowing books right away by going to their website. And if you do happen to live in a less queer-friendly location and are in any way nervous about being caught browsing the site, the QLL provides an easy exit button that redirects visitors to weather.com in the blink of an eye.

This week, Ellie and Leigh discuss the 2023 animated Netflix film Nimona based on the graphic novel by ND Stevenson (who you may recognize as the creator of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power!). The story follows Nimona, possibly the most nonbinary shapeshifter character ever made, as they team up with Ballister, an aspiring knight from a humble background who is set up and accused of murdering the Queen. Nimona is pretty disappointed that Ballister is not actually a villain mastermind, but decides to be his sidekick anyway in an attempt to help him clear his name.

It’s all fun and shapeshifting sharks until Ballister starts to realize that his boyfriend Goldenloin really does not believe he is innocent and cannot see Nimona as anything more than a ‘monster’. Overwhelmed by the extent of the Director’s deception and the loss of everything he has ever known in his life including his relationship, Ballister turns on Nimona triggering flashbacks of being betrayed long, long ago. 

Things become intense and dark very quickly from here on, but honestly we get it. Everyone with any ounce of power in town would rather kill and destroy innocent lives than change or remotely challenge their worldview. They see Nimona as a monster simply because they are different and everyone grows up being taught to 'kill first, ask questions never'. We do ultimately get a happy ending, but not before being absolutely stabbed in the heart at least 12 times with the feels.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “But wait, Ellie and Leigh, the 2024 hit musical film Wicked is already gay”. After all, the source material, a literal Wizard of Oz fanfiction, is pretty much the gayest book ever. But, while we see the tragic enemies-to-lovers (and they were roommates!) of it all between Elphaba and Galinda on screen clear as day, it technically only exists in subtext (so far). We really don’t get how, but there are a wild amount of people that do not see Elphie and Glinda as anything more than “really good friends”. In our opinion the only thing that might be gayer than the Wicked movie is the Wicked movie press tour. Whatever was happening there between Cynthia and Ari, we support it 1000000%. 

In this episode we go through the entire movie song by song (with a few detours along the way). It was incredibly hard to keep this episode from being as long as the movie itself. In our defense, all three of us are massively passionate about Wicked. Amanda’s senior yearbook quote was taken directly from the lyrics of “Defying Gravity”, which we all know is a queer anthem (please hold space for the lyrics of “Defying Gravity”, thank you). Leigh, who insists she never had a “Wicked phase”, just isn’t that girl (but maybe she could be “that boy”). And Ellie is ready to call out Galinda’s name change for what it really is, “white girl activism”. 

We know one thing for sure, Wicked Should’ve Been Gay.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2015 Netflix series Sense8 for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. 

Sense8 is an incredibly queer show that we honestly cannot believe first premiered a whole entire decade ago. It truly ranks up there next to Orphan Black for us as one of the most impressive shows ever to exist on television. Although we really wish it had gotten more seasons, what we did get was an absolute masterpiece. Sense8 was nominated for GLAAD media awards in 2016, 2018 and 2019 for its queer representation and if you did not get a chance to watch it back then, we really cannot recommend enough that you watch it right now. Like for real, why are you reading this? Go watch Sense8 first and then listen to the episode, because this is full of spoilers from here on. 

As you might recall from our episodes on The Matrix and Bound, we are big fans of the Wachowski sisters’ work. Sense8 is no exception. In fact, Lana Wachowski has said that much of Nomi’s storyline was autobiographical in nature. In terms of lesbian couples in media, it doesn’t get much more top tier than Nomi and Amanita. Honestly, they might still be at the top even now. We love that Amanita is so ride or die for Nomi; and in context of it being 2015 at the time, the scenes where she defends Nomi against her terfy friends hit even harder. But, as much as we are all in on Nomi and Amanita, they are not the only queer rep in this show. In fact, we’d argue that every single person in the cluster is queer simply by nature of being a sense8. By having this diverse group of people all across the globe suddenly psychically linked, the Wachowskis make a statement about the nature of sexuality, the value of shared experiences in relation to developing empathy, and what it means to be a “we” in all senses of the word.

Blue Crush stars Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez as Anne Marie and Eden, two surfer girls in Hawaii who are 1000% in love with one another. Since it’s 2002, the movie tries to convince us that Anne Marie is interested in some football player dude, but we all know the truth. They even keep a third girl, Lena, around for the main purpose of making Anne Marie and Eden seem less gay for each other (but they aren’t fooling anyone). It’s a toss up for us when it comes to who is the queerest between Anne Marie and Eden. They both totally lose their minds over the professional surfer dykes with their wolf cuts and tiny bikinis and Eden makes zero attempt to hide her extreme jealousy when Anne Marie begins dating the football guy.

When WandaVision first came to an end in 2021, Lauren asked the universe for more Agatha Harkness. In 2024, the universe delivered in a big way with the gayest Marvel show of all time. Although the show was expected to flop (and was predictably review-bombed by angry straight men), Agatha All Along surprised everyone by becoming an instant hit. We’re not sure how anything with such a powerhouse cast of milfs could ever flop; but in the agist world of Hollywood, it’s honestly amazing that this show even got greenlit. 

We talk with Lauren about the Winnifred Sanderson to Agatha Harkness pipeline, the overwhelming amount of similarities between Agatha and Regina Mills, and how wonderfully refreshing it is to have a show that centers around queer women over the age of 23 for once. We also talk about the enemies to lovers of it all, our shared love of Patti LuPone, and our dreams for a Season 2 where we’d finally get to see how Agatha and Rio first got together.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is having a resurgence of The Chicks in our lives.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why the music of The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, should’ve been gay. For this episode, we will not be speculating about the sexuality of The Chicks themselves as human beings, but rather talking about why their songs give such a queer energy. 

The Chicks write music from a political activist lens that is so incredibly different from the typical country music lens. To say their music resonates with queer people is a massive understatement. There are so many of their songs that were literally the gay music of the time. We didn’t have Chappell Roan or Hayley Kiyoko or those types of openly queer artists. So for us and other gays of a certain age (ie. over 35), Goodbye Earl is as gay as it gets. These ahead of their time icons write songs that feel inclusive, anti-patriarchal, and that have lyrics that sound gay af when we sing along. 

We talk about the gay specifics of songs like Goodbye Earl, a song that Ellie’s extremely queer band The Femmes performs all the time. This song honestly should be a whole musical by now. The music video for it is so gay and so good and if you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it now. We also break down the lyrics in Long Time Gone, a song that is wildly gay for having been released in 2002. There is no straight explanation for this song, and to be honest… it’s giving Betty.

Our topic was inspired by Jane Wickline’s performance on SNL last month where she portrayed Sabrina Carpenter singing about why she deserves her own gay rumors. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s literally all over TikTok.

The skit on Saturday Night Live is hilarious but also brings up an interesting talking point - why is it that we specul-gay-te about certain celebs but not others? Why Taylor Swift but not Sabrina Carpenter? Honestly it isn’t rocket science, but there is quite a bit of gay history involved. For centuries queer people have been creating and utilizing our own secret coded language to be able to flag to one another. This was especially important during times when being gay was a crime, but many forms of flagging are still popular today. After all, you don’t just keep the keys to your Subaru on a carabiner for nothing. This is why Sabrina blatantly making out with an alien dancer on stage and even kissing Jenna Ortega in the Taste music video, while delightfully campy, does not ping our gaydar; but Taylor Swift’s Betty does.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why the 2005 buddy cop comedy Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous Should’ve Been Gay. In case you missed it, we covered how incredibly gay the OG Miss Congeniality was way back in SBG 48.
If you are one of those people who won’t watch anything with a low score on Rotten Tomatoes, congrats on stumbling into our Ted talk on why you’re just going to have to make an exception for this absolute gem of a sequel. 
Miss Congeniality 2 takes place about 10 years after the original. It re-introduces us to Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) who is now the public face of the FBI (and inexplicably, a high femme). Gracie may be blending in better with the straights these days, but she still manages to find herself in a messy love triangle with her longtime lover Cheryl (from the first movie) and her new FBI partner Sam. Why are movies so afraid of giving us successful throuples? The solution is literally right in front of their faces! 
Even though we don’t get the throuple of our dreams, we would argue that teaming up to save your partner's ex is the most classically lesbian thing anyone could ever do. When Cheryl is kidnapped, both Gracie and Sam risk their lives to save her. That’s love right there.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) kick off the new year by talking about the societally normalized weaponization of the “urge to merge” in a relationship and how, as usual, the problem is because of straight culture and cishet men. For the record, it is our belief that it is not codependent to actually like and want to be around your significant other(s)! That’s kind of the point of being in a relationship in the first place. 
Is it really ‘U-Hauling' just because you want to spend all your free time with your partner? Are you really ‘whipped’ for being considerate of your girlfriend’s emotional and physical wellbeing? We really don’t think so and while the jokes may be amusing on occasion, the overarching culture is damaging for women, especially queer women.  
The old “ball and chain” concept has been a staple of mainstream culture for longer than we’ve been alive. Think about the straight couples that you know. Have they merged their friends or do they hang out in mostly gendered groups doing separate things? We really think this comes down to straight men seeming to not really like women or spending time with them (outside of the bedroom). This negative attitude toward spending time together spilled over from the mainstream culture into lesbian relationships and we can’t help but wonder how much of that cultural spill links back to popular queer media like The L Word.

If you know us, you know how much we unironically love The Princess Switch trilogy. This movie has a similarly unhinged plot and more zany “Christmas magic” shenanigans than you can shake a candy cane at (although sadly, only one Vanessa Hudgens). 
What The Knight Before Christmas lacks in Vanessa Hudgens clones it makes up for in the introduction of Sir Cole, a golden retriever girlfriend from the 1300s that Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens) hits with her car and brings home with her. For our gay retelling we can’t help but see Sir Cole’s quest to become a ‘true knight’, something he apparently could not accomplish in his own time period, as a trans allegory. 
In addition to the clear trans allegory, the entire story takes place over only 7 days! Within what is essentially one week-long date, Sir Cole has thoroughly convinced Brooke, her hot sister Madison, and the whole town that he is telling the truth with no physical proof. Nothing about the other characters’ reactions to Sir Cole makes a lick of sense if this is a straight romcom. What woman is going to give an apparently mentally unstable man she has just met a key to her house? That’s not a romcom, that’s a horror movie. But when we put on our gay glasses and see Cole as the trans character he was meant to be, the result is a lesbian u-haul tale as old as time.
We know one thing for sure, The Knight Before Christmas Should’ve Been Gay.

This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Juno Rosenhaus, curator of dyke artists and founder of the Dyke+ ArtHaus (@dykearthaus), a dyke-forward and wholly inclusive space in Philadelphia for queer and trans artists (of all kinds) to come together, create art, and build community. We talk with Juno about the process of creating the ArtHaus, the inherently political nature of the word ‘dyke’, and our personal experiences with vulva shame. 
At its core, the ArtHaus is an extremely political space, with foundations in abolitionism, feminism, and intersectionality. It strives to be an anti-capitalist space that increases accessibility to art for all and serves as a safe space for everyone in the community. Although the ArtHaus centers dyke artists over 40, anyone of any age who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community is welcome. Whether you visit the Dyke+ ArtHaus for an artist residency, a weekend getaway in the guest room (that reportedly contains PORTALS TO OTHER WORLDS), an afternoon jaunt to see the current exhibit, “Twenty (Dyke Artists) over Forty (Years Old)”, or for a community event like the upcoming anti-capitalist gift-making workshop, you are sure to find yourself inspired. 
In addition to learning all about the Dyke+ ArtHaus, we also spoke with Juno about her personal art project, “I Won’t Be Pretty For You: Vulvas Queered”, a series of varied and inclusive photographs of vulvas done in a fine art style to combat vulva shame, promote body and sex positivity, and normalize vulvas of all kinds (and don’t worry, the project is trans inclusive). Apparently vulva circles, where you literally sit in a circle with your friends and look at your vulvas in little mirrors and talk about them together, used to exist in the 70’s and we are deeply upset that this is no longer a common practice #bringbackvulvacircles!

After over 130 of these, we can honestly say that Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is in our top 5 of the gayest films we have ever seen. If you manage to interpret this movie as in any way heterosexual, we just have one question: why? Nothing about the plot makes any sense if these women are straight. We even have two bonus lesbians in supporting characters, Heather and our fav, Lisa Luder! With four queer women in this movie, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is practically a Lez-ssential. 
While we would agree it is a perfectly typical growing-up experience to make a pact to marry your bestie should either of you not still be married by the age of 30 (at least it was in the 90s), it is less typical when you make that pact at 28 years old. That’s just a proposal at that point. Romy and Michele are essentially engaged and you cannot convince us otherwise.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2024 dark buddy comedy Drive-Away Dolls for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. 
Drive-Away Dolls is a chaotic queer romp set in 1999. The plot follows Jamie and Marian, two lesbian besties who could not be more different from one another, as they take a road trip to Tallahassee while being pursued by some very inefficient goons. Coen brothers movies are known for a flavor of dark humor and a level of absurdity that can be polarizing, and this one is no exception. While Leigh (and her wife) found Drive-Away Dolls hilarious, Ellie won’t be rewatching anytime soon. If you’re hoping to find a new ship to stay up late reading about on Ao3, you’ll probably be disappointed. Although the level of lesbian shenanigans is off the charts from Jamie’s L Word vibe to the sheer number of dildos on screen at any given time, the sexual chemistry between the leads is not believable. While we can’t quite root for Jamie and Marian as a couple, we still found the movie enjoyable as an outlandishly gay comedy.

Picture it, you’re a small-town dyke who has had failed beard relationship after failed beard relationship, ultimately leaving all your beards at the altar. Now a big-city journalist has rolled into town and is weirdly intent on poking into all your past relationships and outing you. What’s a closeted dyke to do? Well, if you’re Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts), apparently the answer is to get down on one knee and propose to a gym teacher that you’ve known for all of 2 days. 
Even though this movie is intent on throwing Maggie at a carousel of men, she is so freaking gay the entire time. The very first moment that we see Maggie she is on a horse galloping full speed away from a man. She spends the entire movie alternating her outfits between all-flannel all the time and a wedding dress while hanging out in her tool shed looking apartment. It’s honestly nonsensical that she has been passing as a straight woman for all this time. 
We know one thing for sure, Runaway Bride Should’ve Been Gay.

SBG 136: Runaway Bride with The Gay Women Channel

This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Allyssa Leaton (@thelesbianpassport), a lesbian travel content creator, and talk about her experiences traveling as a solo queer woman.
Allyssa grew up in the Bible Belt not knowing the word ‘lesbian’, let alone what it meant. Now she proudly serves as much-needed queer representation in the travel space, inspiring hopeful LGBTQ+ travelers and finding all the best gay hotspots around the world. 
Although Allyssa has visited more than 20 countries at only 25 years old, she does not make her travel decisions with ticking boxes in mind. Instead of always going to a new country, she has made repeat trips to her favorite places, including Buenos Aires (the city she credits as having the most sapphic-inclusive queer scene) and Iceland (a place where being gay was such a nonissue that Allyssa felt cultural whiplash). As an introvert, Allyssa has found herself thriving as a solo traveler, loving the freedom provided by solitude. We talk with Allyssa about the safety of traveling alone as a lesbian, tips for finding queer spaces and making friends in a new place, and the challenges of traveling full-time.

807: Trip Trip Hooray with Allyssa Leaton

Hey, Lez Hang Out listeners! It's been a hell of a week and we just wanted to release one of our special Patreon bonus episodes for all of you so that you can take a much-needed break from all that doomscrolling.
Today, Ellie and Leigh discuss the 2001 surrealist mystery Mulholland Drive in this special Lez-tracurriculars bonus episode first released to our Patreon in 2022. If you have not seen this movie yet, buckle up, because this episode is about to make zero sense.
Mulholland Drive is essentially a 2-hour long fever dream. The story follows Betty, played by Naomi Watts, an aspiring actress new to L.A. and the amnesiac woman she befriends who refers to herself as Rita. Rita has lost her memories and does not even know her real name after being the sole survivor of a deadly car crash on Mulholland Drive. She winds up breaking into Betty’s aunt’s apartment, because what else is an injured woman with severe memory loss to do, surely not go to the hospital, that would be ridiculous. Betty finds Rita in the apartment and decides to help her try to remember her identity. Along the journey, many truly indescribable things happen that only make marginal sense when it becomes apparent that everything is a dream.
As the dream shifts back to reality, we find ourselves in the same apartment with a woman who looks exactly like Betty but is instead a struggling actress named Diane. She is distraught over her ex-girlfriend Camilla, a successful actress who looks exactly like “Rita,” leaving her for a man and decides to get revenge by hiring a hitman to kill her. When Diane finds out that the deed has been done and Camilla is dead, she becomes overwhelmed by hallucinations and shoots herself in the head. Although this film is technically a lesbian film, it certainly does not make anyone feel good about being a lesbian. It is written and directed by a man; the sex scenes are very male-gazey, the relationship between the women is toxic and there are many unfortunate tropes like Camilla’s bisexuality being treated like a joke, the dangerous scorned woman, the predatory lesbian, and not one but two gays are buried by the end.
Even still, this movie is an interesting, chaotic, and artsy ride that did amazingly well at the box office and is worth a watch if you ignore the extremely depressing ending.

Lez-tracurriculars: Mulholland Drive

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that hates Gay Halloween. What do you mean you’re Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp at Ernest’s funeral?
This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 1992 satirical body horror-comedy Death Becomes Her Should’ve Been Gay. Although not everything in this film ages well (that fat suit was 100% not okay), the overall campiness and pure diva star power of Meryl and Goldie sharing the screen make this a must-watch in our books. 
Death Becomes Her feels like a love letter for every sapphic who never got over that one really intense love/hate homoerotic friendship they had growing up. From the beginning, the entire plot revolves around Helen’s overwhelming obsession with Madeline. It has been 7 years, and all Helen has thought about every single day is Madeline. While it may seem at first glance like the obsession is one-sided, Madeline clearly loves playing the games and entertaining the stalking just as much as Helen. Why is she only going after men who have literally been inside Helen? She’s being SO loud. 
In a wonderfully anti-BYG way, instead of Madeline or Helen dying in their eventual attempts to kill each other, they both live thanks to each having consumed a mysterious immortality potion. Though their bodies are horrifically wrecked and require a lot of maintenance not to look as dead as they are, the two have essentially bound themselves together for eternity. They go directly from hating each other to U-Hauling in the blink of an eye. By the time we see them attend Ernest’s funeral at the end of the film, Madeline and Helen are openly acting like an old married couple. 
We know one thing for sure, Death Becomes Her Should’ve Been Gay.

SBG 135: Death Becomes Her

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is excited to have you at our group therapy session.
This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Elle Deran (@elle.deran), a trans and nonbinary actor, advocate, and content creator, and talk about the beauty and joy of embracing self-actualization and doing the work to live authentically. 
After coming out as trans and nonbinary exactly 1 week prior to the start of the pandemic, Elle had the time to cocoon in their apartment and really take the time to uncover her identity. When they emerged and began to interact with the world again, Elle was disheartened to find that people were interacting with and responding to her very differently than they had been prior to presenting in a more gender-authentic way. Social media provided a path to community and an opportunity for a sort of group catharsis about shared transphobic experiences. This access to a like-minded community acted as a haven for navigating the challenges that came with choosing to embrace authenticity in place of perpetual people-pleasing. 
While speaking with Elle, we talked about the reasons why being a “people-pleaser” is really doing a disservice to both yourself and everyone else. Although this sent Ellie into a bit of an existential spiral, it was an important door into a deeper conversation about the value of authenticity, trusting your intuition, and listening to your body in order to figure out who you truly are. We also discussed why it is actually so important for everyone, regardless of gender identity, to sit with and analyze their feelings about their own gender. This hit home for Leigh, who spent some time reflecting on the gender dysphoria she felt during her pregnancy as well as the recently realized gender euphoria she experienced through something as simple as choosing to stop shaving her legs. In the end, we realized that when you are able to feel joy in being your 100% authentic self, it is easier to feel that same joy when you see others being true to themselves too.

806: My Self is Serving with Elle Deran

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants you to check your harnesses!
This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Reid Pope (@rpopegram), comedian and Head Writer and Executive Producer of Late Stage Live (@latestagelive), a trans-led monthly late-night comedy news show on Brooklyn public access, to talk about why the 2024 highly anticipated disaster sequel Twisters Should’ve Been Gay. 
Despite the severe underutilization of Katy O’Brian, we actually enjoyed Twisters and think the movie did a good job of showing the emotional impact and devastation of severe storms on the communities hit by them. The main character Kate, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, is a traumatized soft-masc who spends the entire movie dodging debris, severe winds, and men while wearing a flannel over her Urban Outfitters tank top. She is literally all of us about a year before coming out and chopping off our hair. 
We can honestly interpret pretty much every character in this film as gay (including the tornados!). Even the male characters are shown embracing their emotions openly and having deep camaraderie with their bros, something not typically highlighted by action movies. We can’t help but ship Javi and Scott, Tyler and Boone, Dani and Lily and Kate with basically any character that isn’t a man. 
We know one thing for sure, Twisters Should’ve Been Gay.

SBG 134: Twisters with Reid Pope

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that fully supports your decision to get the iconic Kristen Stewart Love Lies Bleeding mullet. 
This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about Kristen Stewart’s 2024 sapphic crime-thriller Love Lies Bleeding for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. This movie is a wild ride, and we think it is more enjoyable to go into it with as little information as possible. Be sure to watch the film before listening, as there are many spoilers ahead! However, if you are super squeamish about blood and gore, you may need to sit this one out. The gore is realistic and not at all over the top, but we did find it a bit disturbing and uncomfortable to watch at times.
Love Lies Bleeding introduces us to possibly the (and we say this with the utmost respect) dykiest Kristen Stewart character yet. Lou is a complicated, small-town lesbian working at a gym and sporting the gayest mullet we have ever seen. She has a clingy, obsessive ex-girlfriend named Daisy and a super messy relationship with her family. Refreshingly, Lou’s issues with her family are not because of homophobia. Instead, we learn that her dad is a shady, dangerous man who straight-up kills people, her mom has been “missing” for the past 12 years, and her sister is too brainwashed by her violent, misogynistic husband to be a half-decent sibling. 
When Lou meets Jackie, a bisexual beefcake played by Katie O’Brien, it is like a moth to a flame and their passion quickly ignites into a full-blown toxic, obsessive relationship. They U-Haul after sleeping together one time and then Lou proceeds to get Jackie hooked on steroids to help her bulk up for an important bodybuilding competition. The film does an excellent job showing how the steroids are changing Jackie’s body and personality, shielding none of the horrors of addiction and obsessive love from the viewers. Several realistic sex scenes help to emphasize the problematic relationship dynamics between Lou and Jackie. It's not all violence and sex though, as we were laughing our heads off on multiple occasions from all the campy, queer chaos in a Bodies, Bodies, Bodies type of way.
Even though Lou and Jackie’s relationship is 100% toxic and gets almost everyone in their path killed, we cannot help but be fascinated by these nuanced antiheroes and the movie's exploration of what it means to be a monster.

805: Lez-ssentials Love Lies Bleeding

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Silas Howard (@silash), award-winning trans filmmaker, to talk about why the 2024 horror-romcom Lisa Frankenstein Should’ve Been Gay. If you recall, we recently did an SBG episode on the 2022 series Darby and the Dead, which was directed by none other than Silas. So when we decided to do an episode on Lisa Frankenstein, we could not think of a more fitting guest for discussing this incredibly campy, queer-coded Halloweencore romcom.
As you all know by now, monsters are super queer-coded. They are often depicted on the fringes of society, hiding in literal closets, and transforming their bodies in unique ways. If you identified with the misunderstood monster in horror movies growing up, you’re probably some flavor of queer now. Lisa Frankenstein takes identifying with monsters a step further by making the transmasc-coded creature a love interest for the main character. 
The story follows Kathryn Newton’s character Lisa Swallows (the jokes basically write themselves) and her growing friendship with a reanimated corpse. She seems entirely unconcerned with his whole being dead thing and doesn’t mind one bit that he is missing certain body parts. Things get increasingly unhinged as Lisa begins helping her new friend get the body parts he needs to feel affirmed and comfortable in his newly reanimated skin. 
Everything in this film from the plot to the cast (Carla freaking Gugino is in this!) to the color palette to the over the top drag-influence on the costume design is too queer-coded to have been unintentional. Honestly even the morally ambiguous way that the characters approach killing is queer-coded. Even though the film doesn’t go all the way there or expressly state anyone’s sexuality, it’s basically leaping off the screen the entire time. 
We know one thing for sure, Lisa Frankenstein Should’ve Been Gay(er).

SBG 133: Lisa Frankenstein with Silas Howard

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast voted most likely to talk at you about gay sh*t for 8 years. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and try to nail down what it is that makes them both so freaking gay. 
Between Leigh voting Ellie most likely to not see a straight person for 3 years and Ellie voting Leigh most likely to get recognized at Home Depot, this was truly meant to be a deeply unserious episode. However, it takes a bit of a turn when Ellie goes into a whole existential crisis trying to pin down exactly what about her is gay. In her defense, she typed ‘lesbian stereotypes’ into Google and quickly discovered that Google has never encountered a feminine lesbian (especially one that hates hiking, isn’t a vegetarian, and is genuinely terrified of cats). Luckily for Ellie her intense love of oysters, her Co-Star account, and her strong celesbian diva energy come in clutch to verify that she is in fact super gay after all (whew). 
On the other hand, Leigh tends to fit a bit more of the stereotypes. From her ever-growing stash of little boy’s button-down shirts to her handyness around the house and self-proclaimed love of fixing things, Leigh might look like a cliché gay at first glance. But did you know…she has a dog! (Yes, so does Ellie, but we’re not talking about her right now). Truly the gayest thing about Leigh is neither her skill with a hammer nor her very short haircut. It’s not even that her ex was in her wedding party. The gayest thing about Leigh is actually her deep, esoteric knowledge of niche queer media. If you want to talk to someone about that obscure foreign web series with that one gay couple, you’re in luck; because Leigh does too.

804: Cliché Gays

Strap on your fairy wings, because it is time to go save the monarchy!
This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Iz Hesketh (@iz.hesketh), proud trans actor and drag performer known for her roles in British soap opera Hollyoakes and Disney’s Renegade Nell, to talk about why the Disney+ series Renegade Nell Should’ve Been Gay(er). Although we wish this series would have been renewed for a second season, the episodes we did get are jam-packed with racial diversity, gender nonconformity, and all-over queer energy; and we think it has true cult classic potential. If you have not watched it yet, we highly recommend doing so before listening to this episode as it contains quite a few spoilers. 
We were so excited to sit down with Iz and talk about her role as a canonically nonbinary character (one of only 4 trans/nonbinary characters in the Disney universe and the FIRST to be in a live-action series). Normally we can only speculate what creators and the folks behind the scenes were thinking when they make things that just seem SO gay to us, but this time we have firsthand accounts from someone who was actually there on set (and guess what, listeners? We were right!). Many of the people behind the scenes for Renegade Nell were queer themselves and fully open to incorporating that into the characters and story. Viewers can see this for themselves through little changes that make a big impact on representation such as changing Valerian’s (Iz Hesketh) pronouns and even incorporating the colors of the trans flag into one of Iz’s costumes. Whether the plan was for Valerian to be nonbinary all along, or if they changed it when Iz was cast, we are thrilled to see such inclusive, diverse representation on Disney+.
The queerness does not stop at Valerian, however, as the main character Nell is quite masc herself and can easily be interpreted as either a very butch lesbian or a trans man. We also have Leigh’s favorite, Polly Honeycombe, a femme who is absolutely besotted with Nell, Billy, a very gay fairy (as are all fairies), and Sofia, the “enemy” in our enemies-to-lovers ship with Nell. Gender nonconformity is woven throughout the show as a main theme. Even when something pretty darn gay does happen, like Polly kissing Nell, the characters are all very accepting and think nothing of it. 
We know one thing for sure, Renegade Nell Should’ve Been Gay(er).

SBG 132: Renegade Nell with Iz Hesketh

LAZOU, pronounced “Lah-Zoo”, is of Chinese Mauritian descent. She was born in Toronto, ON, but grew up in Mauritius. The tiny African island is the only place the Dodo bird🦤 ever lived! She is now based in California.

She is a music producer, songwriter and vocalist. Her music has been featured on TV shows such as The Young & The Restless, True Lies, Real Girlfriends in Paris, & more.
On Nuances, LAZOU brings Asian stories to light with Asian guest hosts and scholars. Her most recent episode, 'But Where Are The Lesbians,' highlights the rich lesbian world of pre-modern Asia, often overlooked in Western narratives. Gay men are documented everywhere, but lesbians rarely are and the tales are fascinating. Like - did you know that in premodern Japan, there were s*x toys specifically designed and marketed to lesbian women, along with drawings showing how to use these toys?

Even though The Golden Girls was first released in 1985, it was quite progressive in its handling of many prominent social and political issues for the time. A ragtag group of single, older/middle-aged women live together and somehow it isn’t supposed to be the gay commune of our dreams?
Blanche may be the butt of a lot of sexist jokes for her “promiscuity”, but she’s also incredibly sex-positive for the 80s. We think Blanche has chaotic bisexual energy and if you don’t see it, you’re lying. Dorothy has all the hallmarks of a late-in-life lesbian, and Rose? That’s a closeted lesbian dealing with so much comphet that she can’t even see through it. Honestly, we think everyone in this show is gay (except for Sophia, our token straight).

SBG 131: The Golden Girls with Stacey Powell

If you’re a later-in-life gay, congrats on making it out! And if you’re still in the closet, we see you, we love you, and your gayness is valid. 
This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with host of the Made It Out Podcast (@madeitoutpodcast), Mal Glowenke (@malglowenke), to talk about the journey from recovering Texas-raised (closeted) lesbian to loud and proud podcast host. The heteronormative societal culture from growing up in Dallas was strong, but the pull of LA was stronger. All it took was one visit to Hollywood to break the closet door wide open, catapulting Mal into a beautiful, technicolor world of community and possibility. 
It’s been a long journey from Mal’s days of scrolling Craigslist’s “Women Seeking Women” board to moving to DTLA and experiencing her baby gay days right as the pandemic hit. After 20+ years of having to live inauthentically, Mal had a lot of unraveling to do, including needing surgery to reverse the plastic surgery that she had done solely for the sake of appealing to the male gaze. By finding queer community, Mal finally had the safe space she needed to liberate her true self. 
Now that Mal is wide awake to the harms of the heteronormative patriarchy, she is using her podcast to get the word out about the importance of voting. Her new six-episode series, Made It Out (To the Polls), partners with LPAC, the only national organization dedicated to advancing the political representation and power of LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary candidates at every level of government.

802: Gayed It Out with Mal Glowenke

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants to make your heart go boom, boom, supernova girl (gender neutral). 
This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why the classic 1999 Disney Channel Original Movie, Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, Should’ve Been Gay. This movie was queer MAJOR, and if you were a kid in the 90s like us, phrases like “Cetus lupeedus!” are most likely still living rent free in your head. 
For those of you who have not seen Zenon, the story follows a 13 year old girl living on a space station in the year 2049 (which seemed a lot farther off in 1999). She is a chaotic baby gay from the second she shows up on screen and cannot help but get into constant trouble with her BF Nebula, played by the one and only Raven-Symoné. When she gets into a little too much trouble, she is exiled to Earth to live with her Aunt Judy and forced to trade her space stay gay life for a boring one with way too much gravity and nowhere near enough pleather.
Between the space stay residents looking like they are perpetually at a gay nightclub, Proto Zoa’s genderfluid frosted tips, the bisexual color scheme of space, Zenon’s Earth boyfriend Greg’s whole horse-girl dyke aesthetic, and Zenon and Nebula’s totally lunarious love for one another, we are not sure how anyone ever thought this movie was for the str8s.
We know one thing for sure, Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century Should’ve Been Gay.

SBG 130: Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century

The summer of 2024 will forever be remembered as a magical renaissance for the girls, gays and theys. From the queer women sweeping the Paris Olympics to the loudly lesbian musicians and singers topping the charts (and each other), it has truly been the hot gay summer of our dreams. 
This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are back in your eardrums with the premiere of Season 8 (!!!) of the little lesbian podcast that could. We’ve only been gone for a few weeks, but there is so much to talk about.
Whether you’re a sports gay or not, you most likely saw at least some of the summer Olympics where 55 LGBTQ+ women made it to the podium. These incredible athletes were not the only ones breaking records this summer though, as Ellie saw firsthand at Chappell Roan’s overwhelmingly well-attended Lollapalooza set. Everything Chappell releases lately has been such a bop that the Midwest Princess effectively united the straights and the gays (even though the straights definitely still don’t understand Good Luck, Babe). But Chappell isn’t the only lesbian we’ve got blasting in our airpods. Billie Eilish has fully embraced the challenge of making sure no one ever questions her sexuality again. After releasing a chart-topping song about eating a girl out for lunch, Billie somehow made things even more sapphic by rolling around in a pile of bras and panties with Charli XCX in the Guess remix music video. We’d be remiss to not mention our girl Reneé Rapp (who we are going to sorely miss on the Sex Lives of College Girls next season) and who, alongside Chappell Roan, has been very vocal and intentional about her lesbian identity.

Today, Ellie and Leigh hang out with friend of the pod Rebecca Noyes (who you probably know as a host of LHO Trivia) to talk about the incredibly controversial 2010 film, The Kids Are All Right. This movie tends to incite very strong, visceral emotional reactions in queer viewers, however, it did amazingly with critics and was nominated for 4 Oscars including a Best Picture nomination. Since Ellie and Leigh were strongly in the “this movie is a hate crime” camp, Rebecca is here to share the other side, easily placing this film in her top 5 (maybe even top 3) lesbian movies of all time.
If you have not seen The Kids Are All Right, let us explain why it is so controversial. While at first glance the film seems like a great step for representation, it quickly reveals a much more nuanced plot. The story revolves around the 20-year marriage of Nic and Jules, a lesbian couple with two donor-conceived children, Joni and Laser. In 2010 there were basically no other movies that showed a married lesbian couple with a family, so you can just imagine how much of a splash this movie made. Unfortunately for lesbian representation, Nic and Jules’ relationship 20 years in is not looking so good. This in itself is not all that problematic, after all, who is still in the honeymoon phase after that many years? Where things go off the rails is when the movie introduces the kids’ biological father Paul. At first the kids have idealistic views of him as he worms his way into the family unit. But it’s not only the children who are taken with Paul. Jules, who openly describes herself as a gay woman, proceeds to fall for Paul, charmed by his similarities to her children. She ends up sleeping with him, beginning an affair that truly could not be more painful to watch. For a movie that is supposed to be about a lesbian family, there is so much focus on men and somehow more male sex and naked male butts than we would ever want to see, especially because Nic and Jules watch gay male porn to spice things up in the bedroom. The one good thing about this movie is it somehow has a happy ending (which we all know is a rarity in lesbian films), with Nic and Jules remaining together despite glaring relationship problems. We personally really hope they got some family therapy after the credits rolled.

Writer Elliott Maya (they/them, and "a sprinkle of he/him in, like, a fruity Victorian dandy boy way") has a real way with words, in case you couldn't tell from that parenthetical. Raised in the *extremely* strict Jehovah's Witnesses religion, Lio and their brother were also the only Black kids at their school. As if this weren't enough, Lio started going through puberty quite early, which coincided with them realizing that they were "not like the other girls, in many ways." Lio knew that college was their only chance of escape, so they started working at the age of twelve. Along the way, they attempted to hide their queerness in high school by becoming a gay bully...but in an ironic twist, they ended up becoming "horrifically" attracted to their (also queer) victim. Besides being an absolutely HILARIOUS storyteller, Lio also has Long Covid, and started the group Covid Cautious Queers. We spend the latter half of the episode talking about the ways in which Lio's illness has changed their life, and the (easy!) ways you can help not only them, but everyone in your community.
