Given the length it takes to test, I’m wondering if he tested positive last season.a.When sports leagues try to convince us that PEDs are out of their league, it seems like they are more hopeful or just trying to convince us that their product is clean. Your thoughts…is Marte an anomaly or just a young kid who got caught?b.Break down the infield for the Reds to start the season.2.It appears that Mookie Betts will gain SS eligibility after the Dodgers moved Gavin Lux to second with concerns about his ability to make the throw.a.I know we people get excited about what Ohtani can do, but moving from the outfield back to shortstop after not playing there for years is pretty impressive. I’m not sure fans have a true appreciation for this.b.Given this news, would you give pause to drafting Gavin Lux as a sleeper? It's not the lack of SS eligibility, but it appears he is not completely healthy. 3.Tommy Edman will start the season on the IL. Dylan Carlson gets another life. What about Victor Scott II?4.Joey Votto signs a minor league deal with the Blue Jays. Any interest?5.Nathaniel Lowe will start the season on the IL. It looks like Justin Foscue will get a chance. Also, this might give more confidence that Wyatt Langford will come North with the team. Although he’s been a monster this spring, keeping him down would be tough to do. Your thoughts?a.What happens when Lowe returns?6.Fascinating article this week in the Athletic from Rangers head physician Dr. Keith Meister (he’s the inventor of the brace elbow surgery). His position is that many of the injuries occurring with pitchers are now just not velocity, but the expanded use of sweepers and power change-up (turbo change-up). I surmised that added horizontal movement from sweepers would tax the arm, but the power change-up was something I had not considered. He said it came a lot from how hard the player had to squeeze the ball. A lot of changes were made, most were small and too detailed to discuss, but here are three that I would like you feedback on?a.The runners lane to first base was expanded to include the base line to the grass cut to first. Good signing by the Mets? He’s going off the board as the 137th pitcher (round 32) and is basically free. Will you be taking a flyer?3.The Tigers sign Kenta Maeda to a two-year, $24 million contract. While he continued not to be very durable, he pitched ok with an xERA of 3.77 and a 10 K/9 rate while keeping his walk rate at 2.4 per nine. He’s going as the 107th pitcher off the board (round 18). Thoughts?4.The Cardinals continued their youth movement by signing 34-year-old Sonny Gray to a 3-year, $75 million contract. He had a great season in 2023, pitching to a 2.77 ERA and striking out 183 in a robust 184 innings. He’s going as the 58th pitcher off the board or the 40th starting pitcher. Solid #3 starter for you, or would you grab him earlier?5.The Reds signed Nick Martinez to a two-year deal (opt-out after the first year). The Reds plan on starting him. His average ADP Is 593, but he’s trending up, and it looks like his ADP is #400 in recent drafts. Are you interested in him as a #5/#6 starter if he's a starter?6.Many discussions about Juan Soto with the Yankees appear to be the best fit. However, they are playing hardball and maybe only want to give up Clarke Schmidt and some young prospects for him. How does this all end?Segment 2 – Fantasy Questions of the AL West1.Houston Astrosa.Chas McCormick went 20-19 last season and helped a lot of fantasy managers. His baseballsavant data looks ok. Does this interest you?b.Jeremy Pena went from 22 home runs in 2022 to 10 last season and is now the 22nd shortstop off the board. Looking at his BaseballSavant page, it's not great. Part of the reason his power dropped is his launch angle dropped from 8.7 degrees to 5.5 degrees. However, he has below-average power, chases too much, and is aggressive at the plate. In looking at the data, the exit velos are the same, the launch angle is the same, the K-Rate is the same, and the walk rate is the same. You got it…everything is the same. He’s dropped to the 24th third baseman off the board. If you think he can return to 30 home runs, does this give him some value here? Especially if you need power late in the draft.b.Carlos Vargas has a great arm with a fastball that will touch triple-digits, but he has no idea where the ball is going. He’s likely a bullpen arm. Seby Zavala came through the White Sox organization and strikes out too much. Not sure he’s more than a backup catcher. Thoughts on both players?2.The Cardinals sign two pitchers. Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn. Both were okay last year with the Orioles and White Sox/Dodgers. Lynn’s ADP is 353, and Gibson is 564. Any interest?a.Does this move the needle for the Cardinals?3.We both got excited about the trade that brought Brandon Shewmake to the White Sox. Maybe he would get a shot. What do the White Sox do? Jackson Kowar hasn’t developed.a.Your thoughts on the trade?2.The Marlins acquired Vidal Brujan and RHP Calvin Faucher from the Rays for IF Erick Lara and RHP Andrew Lindsey. Brujan is the name here and brings big speed. Will he get enough playing time in Miami to warrant any interest?a.Don’t dismiss Lara. He’s a 17-year-old kid who played well in the DSL, walking nearly as much as he struck out with a little bit of speed and power.b.Lindsey was the Marlins fifth-round pick last July and was the University of Tennessee Friday Night starter. His fastball is up to 98 with a plus slider. He did turn 24 last week and has only pitched in the Complex League. He should be watched very closely. 3.The Braves acquired Aaron Bummer from the White Sox for five players. The five players going back to the White Sox are RHP Mike Soroka, LHP Jared Shuster, MI Nicky Lopez and Braden Shewmake, and RHP Riley Gowens.a.On the surface, it looks like a lot for Bummer, but he’s controllable for three years, and his stuff is better than you think. He’s a sinkerballer with an xSLG of .386 despite an SLG of 452. His signature pitch is his sweeper, and it’s one of the best in baseball. It’s a good arm.b.In return, the White Sox get a lot of famous guys, but all of them have hair on them. Soroka has never stayed healthy. Jared Shuster was a top-ranked prospect until we got a look at his Statcast data. It’s not great with a below-average fastball and two solid but unspectacular secondary pitches in his cutter and change-up.c.Braden Shewmake might be the most interesting of the bunch. He makes great contact with plus speed (27 SB in Triple-A) with a little bit of power. He can play both second and short and might get a shot at short if Colson Montgomery needs more grooming in the minor leagues.4.The Rockies acquired Cal Quantrill from the Guardians. He was one of your sleepers last year. While they needed a shortstop, they also need innings. It makes you wonder if they will dip back into the farm system for a River Ryan, a Kyle Hurt, or a Nick Frasso.i.Did this make sense to you?ii.Father time and injuries have not been kind to Syndergaard. In 2019, his fastball averaged 98 MPH. Today, it’s averaging 92.6 MPH. However, the Guardians have a history of getting guys to throw harder. Thoughts?b.They also re-acquired Kike Hernandez. He was pretty good the first time but awful with Boston. Will he get enough at-bats to grab him in a fantasy league? Even if he does, would you pick him up?i.The Red Sox got two relievers in Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman. 1.Robertson is a fastball change-up pitcher. Pretty good change-up with nice tumble and fade. FB sits 95 MPH and is pretty straight.2.Hagenman – Has a three-pitch arsenal (sinker-slider-changeup). The sinker looks average, with a decent slider and change-up. He’s been used as a long reliever/spot starter.3.David Robertson is traded to the Marlins.4.Tuesday was a bad day for pitchers looking to get traded. Do either of these guys get moved? Both are Top 100 prospects for me, with Soderstrom having a chance to be an all-star caliber player. a.Esteury Ruiz has reportedly started hitting off a tee. Good news.b.As a side note. The A’s had the sixth pick in the draft and went with Justin Wilson whose father played in the big leagues primarily for the Pirates. He never strikes out but with no power and modest speed. You have one of the deepest drafts in years, and this is the direction you go. The hope is that you are drafting the unicorn known as Luis Arraez, but lightning rarely strikes twice. What are your thoughts on what the A’s are doing? 2.Many more rumors about the Angels willing to trade Ohtani. However, how will his finger issue affect his trade value? Your thoughts?3.Justin Verlander or Sandy Alcantara – Who do you want to rest of the season?a.Do you think a change of scenery would help Verlander or is he just not yet in synch because of an early season stint on the IL?4.As a Trea Turner owner, I’m not happy. The following players are discussed:1.Dylan Crews (OF, Was, #2)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2025-26 Fantasy Ceiling: First-Round Fantasy PickTools Summary: 20-20 upside with a feel to hit.Dylan Crews had the best combination of safety and upside in the 2023 Draft. A handful of high school players have a higher upside, but when you combine his proven ability to hit in the SEC with a 20-20 profile, he should be the top player selected in supplemental Dynasty League Drafts. If you’re looking for a comp, I liken him to Jackson Holliday. Yep, he has a chance to be that good. 2.Wyatt Langford (OF, Tex, #4)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2025-26 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 30 OFTools Summary: 20-30 upside with high OBP skills.Right behind Dylan Crews in the Draft was Wyatt Langford. He has plus power and is a 70-runner with a feel to hit. From a fantasy standpoint, if you’re picking #2 in supplemental drafts, do not fret, as there is a chance that Langford will be as good as Crews. Crews might be the slightly better hitter, but Langford has more power and speed potential.3.Paul Skens (RHP, Pit, #1)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2024-25 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 15 SPTools Summary: He has the size and arsenal to be a #1 starter. Given how hard he throws, there is risk of early arm troubles, as seen with Hunter Greene.Paul Skens attended the Air Force Academy for two years but then transferred to LSU for his Junior year. Apparently, cadets are allowed to leave the academy before their junior year. While I’m not sure about the rules, I’m surmising that the relaxed rules that have allowed college players to transfer through the NCAA Portal, has opened up this capability for players who decide to pursue a professional career. That rule was not available to those who remember Noah Song.When you’re 6-foot-6 and sitting in the upper 90s and routinely hit the triple-digits with your fastball, you get drafted early. Should he have gone one overall? There is an argument. I would have gone with Crews, but he’s deserving. It’s a Hunter Greene starter kit. He throws hard, but his fastball is relatively straight with secondary pitches that should get plenty of strikeouts. If you decide to take him in your supplemental drafts, the correlation of high velo pitchers to arm trouble is increased. Just know the risk.4.Max Clark (OF, Det, #3)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2026-27 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 30 OFTools Summary: Extremely athletic with plus speed and plenty of bat speed to project future power. Max Clark is one of the most athletic players in the 2023 Draft, with 70-grade speed and plenty of bat speed to project future power. While high school stats should be taken with a grain of salt, he did steal 35 bases while hitting .551. In reviewing film, the swing should work, and over time, I believe he’ll add bulk to his frame with over-the-fence power. The Tigers will be careful with him, so I expect him to spend all of 2024 in Low-A. Once fully developed, the upside is a 15-30+ player with more power as he fills out.5.Walker Jenkins (OF, Min, #5)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2026-27 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 40 OFTools Summary: Athletic with a lefty swing built for 30+ home run future pop. I saw Walker Jenkins multiple times in high school, and he’s a plus athlete with a beautiful lefty swing that should be built for power. He’s a plus runner, but as he fills out his 6-foot-3 body, I think he will emerge into a power-hitting corner outfielder with a handful of stolen bases. It will come down to how much he hits, and the early returns look encouraging. 6.Matt Shaw (SS, CHC, #13)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2024-25 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 10 2B/3BTools Summary: Plus power with a feel to hit and speed early in his career. I was surprised when Matt Shaw dropped to pick 13 in the 2023 Draft. He’s a natural hitter with considerable power despite his 5-foot-11 frame. Across his sophomore and junior season at Maryland, he hit 48 home runs and stole 30 bases in 122 games. He also walked nearly as much as he struck out (14% K-Rate). The profile reminds me a lot of Alex Bregman, and while I don’t think he’ll pop 40 home runs, I think he’ll have serious power.7.Rhett Lowder (RHP, Cin, #7)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2025 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 30 SPTools Summary: 70-grade change-up with a chance for at least a 60 slider. Plus, he throws strikes. If the Reds can get him to throw harder, he has the ceiling of a number two starter.Kyle Boddy has made the Reds pitchers better. So when the Reds went early on Rhett Lowder, I immediately set up in my chair. It’s not a big fastball, but he’s got a double-plus change-up with a slider/sweeper that, over time, could grade out as plus. Plus, he throws strikes. In his draft year, he walked less than two per nine; and this is the most critical aspect of his profile. You see, Major League teams are drafting pitchers like Lowder, with plus secondary pitches and the ability to throw strikes, and getting them to throw harder. It would not surprise me to see him touching 97 shortly after the Reds get him into their system. The upside is a number two starter. Finally, don’t you need a Rhett on your Dynasty League team? I know I do!8.Enrique Bradfield (OF, Bal, #17)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2025-26 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 45 OFTools Summary: An 80-grade runner that, with some swing tweaks, could unlock power. The Orioles are a perfect landing spot for him. Enrique Bradfield’s carrying tool is his 80-grade speed, with the MLB Network comping him to Willie McGee. It was hard to deny the similarities when they threw up his swing and put it side-by-side with Bradfield. He does produce high exit velocities, but his swing is more geared for contact. This is where you have to trust the Orioles. I think they can tweak the swing to get him more upright and add loft, and that below-average current power will turn into average power quickly. From a fantasy standpoint, he could steal 40 bases, and his elite defense will make him a big leaguer. I’m investing.9.Tommy Troy (3B, Ari, #12)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2025-26 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 15 3BTools Summary: A potential plus hit tool with above-average speed and power.I’m not a fan of Stanford hitters as they coach their hitters to all hit the “Stanford way” - a very structured approach and swing. This has proven to be sub-optimal for many players over the years. However, it seems to have worked for Tommy Troy, as he can flat-out hit. He hit .394 in his draft year with 17 home runs and 17 stolen bases. The swing is built for contact and lacks loft, so projecting plus future plus power might be a reach. But I can safely project a 15-15 player with a .270 average and 60 to 70 points on top of that for OBP.10.Colin Houck (SS, NYM, #32)Highest Level: Draft ETA: 2026-27 Fantasy Ceiling: Top 15 SSTools Summary: He has a feel to hit with speed and power. Colin Houck is a great athlete with size for future power. At least early in his career, he will have plus speed. He hit .487 with eight home runs in his Senior Year. I’m not sure how he lasted to the 32nd pick, but if he signs, I think the Mets got a huge bargain here.

He pitches to contact, stuff is very average, and his XERA is 4.58, almost two full runs higher than his ERA. Sell high? My guess is not very long.Christian Encarnacion-Strand, 3B, CIN (CBS: 45% rostered, ESPN: Everyone else has been called up in Cincinnati. It’s only a matter of time before Encarnacion-Strand gets his opportunity. With 17 home runs and a .427 BA in 177 at-bats at Triple-A Louisville, that opportunity will likely come sooner rather than later.Stuart Fairchild, OF, CIN (CBS: 1% rostered, ESPN: not rostered): Jake Fraley once again hits the IL, joining Wil Myers and Nick Senzel. Stuart Fairchild has helped pick up the slack and thus far has done an admirable job, slugging a couple of homers with 19 RBI and seven thefts. The outfield has taken a big hit injury-wise in the past couple of weeks. Fairchild could provide at least a temporary option.Nolan Jones, OF, COL (CBS: 42% rostered, ESPN: 8% rostered): Are we finally seeing a breakout from Nolan Jones? In five games this week, he has gone 6-for-16 with a pair of homers. It’s worth a small bid to determine if this hot streak is sustained.Corey Julks, OF, HOU (CBS: 10% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): Long-term, Julks is more than likely a fourth outfielder, but short-term, the stolen base potential is providing sneaky value. He has four thefts this week with more to come, and for a small investment could be accumulating them on your Fantasy squad.Nick Pratto, 1B/OF, KCR (CBS: 29% rostered, ESPN: 4% rostered): Over the past seven games, Pratto has gone 6-for-22 with a homer and 3 RBI, hitting mainly out of the leadoff slot. Playing time should not be an issue with Vinnie Pasquantino on the IL with right shoulder instability.Emmanuel Rivera, 1B/3B, ARZ (CBS: 4% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): It’s crowded in Arizona, with Josh Rojas and Emmanuel Rivera in a job share, but Rivera appears to be slowly winning the battle. The power and speed are limited, but there’s no doubting Rivera’s ability to control the strike zone. In deeper Leagues, that .860 OPS provides value.Tarik Skubal, SP, DET (CBS: 25% rostered, ESPN: 4% rostered): The rehab clock has started, and so far, so good. We’re looking at a much-anticipated early July return to the Tigers rotation. Buying in early will save you some of that precious FAAB.A.J. Smith-Shawver, SP, ATL (CBS: 58% rostered, ESPN: 13% rostered): The 20-year-old righthander got that first start under his belt and handled it in fine fashion. He went 5 1/3 innings allowing two unearned runs in a no-decision. That has earned him another start against the Tigers. Go get him and get him active.Mark Vientos, 3B, NYM (CBS: 17% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): Pete Alonso got plunked on the wrist last Wednesday, suffering a bone bruise and sprained left wrist that will leave him sidelined for the next month. There will be opportunities in New York for additional at-bats, and it’s worth a small bid to see if Vientos and that power potential gets his share of them.Bryan Woo, SP, SEA (CBS: 13% rostered, ESPN: 1% rostered): The first game was underwhelming, to say the least, but Woo bounced back nicely in his second outing, holding the Angels to two runs over 4 2/3 innings while chipping in with seven strikeouts. He has earned another start.The Closer ReportAdbert Alzolay, RP, DET (CBS: 12% rostered, ESPN: 2% rostered): With two saves in his past five appearances and sporting a 30/4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 30 appearances, Alzolay has moved into the setup role with an eye towards working the ninth regularly.Scott McGough, RP, ARZ (CBS: 8% rostered, ESPN: 2% rostered): McGough got off to a rough start and lost the closer job but has rebounded nicely. He hasn’t allowed an earned run since May 12, a span of 10 appearances (14 IP). Over that span, he has amassed 21 strikeouts. In Leagues that count holds, it’s time to include him in your future plans.A.J. Minter, RP, ATL (CBS: 24% rostered, ESPN: 12% rostered): The season has been one of very high highs and very low lows, but after both the success and failure, Minter has shown a return to the “good AJ”. He has two saves and a win this week and has solidified his hold on the setup gig. It’s time to get him rostered and active, again.Andres Munoz, RP, SEA (CBS: 51% rostered, ESPN: 47% rostered): There was considerable debate as to whether Paul Sewald would own the ninth inning for the M’s heading into 2023. A right shoulder strain suffered by Munoz back in early April made that decision a moot point. Well, Munoz has returned from the IL and is already flashing that huge strikeout potential. In a worst-case scenario, you wind up with a high K/9 setup man. At the best, a job share closing and save opportunities. It seems like a win/win to us.
