This week, in a listener-researched and written episode, we head to Omagh in Northern Ireland, as we take a look at the brutal 1998 murder of 17-year-old Sylvia Fleming. On the cusp of adulthood, and with a difficult childhood now behind her, Sylvia thought she had struck gold when she met 26-year-old Stephen Scott. He was charming, handsome and popular. But he had a wicked side and enjoyed putting Sylvia down in front of her friends and family. And behind closed doors, things were much, much worse. He carried out his sadistic sexual fantasies on Sylvia and on the night of 3 April 1998, armed with a syringe full of insulin, he went too far and Sylvia paid with her life. A truly harrowing case... This week we head to London, and to 1981, as we explore the mysterious disappearance of 8-year-old Vishal Mehrotra. On 29 July in 1981, as the world waited in anticipation for the fairy-tale wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles, the Mehrotra family made their way into central London to join in with the celebrations. Dad Vishambar worked in a tall office building in the City and knew this would be a great vantage point from which to watch the royal procession. Daughter Mamta, son Vishal and nanny Joannita watched in awe as the crowds gathered below and the newly married couple passed by in their glass carriage.  What started as a day of celebration and excitement, ended in despair however, when Vishal disappeared on the way home.  Just what happened to this little boy? Kaylea was born with spina bifida and all of the normal things that children often take for granted, such as running around and playing football, were impossible for her. But she was feisty and fiercely independent - determined to make the most of her time on this earth. But that time would be brief. Not because of her condition, but because of her parents' brutal neglect of her.  Kaylea was fed a diet of junk food and by the time she was 16, she had ballooned to 22 stone. Pressure sores covered her body and maggots feasted upon her open wounds... And her parents did nothing. They closed the door on her both metaphorically and physically... In 2016, 340 children were adopted in Wales. Ten month old Shayla O’Brien was one of those 340 children. Like most children put up for adoption, Shayla had entered this world under difficult circumstances. Born to a drug-addicted mother, she was added to the child protection register at birth, in November 2014. She left hospital when she was five days old and she was quickly taken into care by the Vale of Glamorgan council, before being placed with a foster family, where she remained until she was placed with an adoptive family in September 2015, at the age of ten months. This adoptive family consisted of two parents, Craig and Matthew Scully-Hicks, and a previously adopted older child. Matthew assumed the majority of the caring responsibilities for Shayla, and she remained as a 'looked after child' following her placement with the family until the making of the Adoption Order. The Adoption Order was granted in May 2016 and Shayla’s name was changed to Elsie. She was now officially a member of the Scully-Hicks family. This should have been the beginning of a happier life for Elsie, a life filled with love and opportunity… But it wasn’t to be. Just two weeks after the official adoption had been granted, Elsie would lie dead in her bed at the University of Wales Hospital, having suffered a catalogue of catastrophic injuries at the hands of Matthew Scully-Hicks. In the mid 1980's, William Beggs picked up 28-year-old Barry Oldham in a Newcastle nightclub, before taking him back to his flat for sex.   But it wasn't just sex that Beggs had an appetite for that night. He had murder in mind. After having sex with Barry Oldham, Beggs murdered him before attempting to cut off his head and legs. He was caught and given a life sentence for this senseless murder, but in a shocking twist, he ended up serving less than two years. In 1989 his conviction was quashed after appeal judges criticised evidence led by the prosecution. But he was back in prison two years later after being convicted of slashing a gay man at his flat. Beggs was released early from his six-year sentence in 1994 for good behaviour and moved to Scotland some time later, but he could not keep a lid on his violent tendencies... Darrell Lance Abbott, best known by his stage name Dimebag Darrell, was an American musician and songwriter. He was the guitarist of the heavy metal bands Pantera and Damageplan, both of which he co-founded alongside his brother Vinnie Paul. His bands were super successful but with an increased profile came an increased risks to his personal safety. On December 8 2004, Damageplan was performing at the Alrosa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, when a deranged fan stormed the stage, shooting Darrell dead. This week's episode takes us back to 24 March 2015. On this day, Germanwings flight 9525 took off from Barcelona Airport with 144 passengers on board, together with four crew and two pilots, bound for Dusseldorf. Half an hour in to the flight, Captain Patrick Sondenheimer left the cockpit to go to the bathroom. His co-pilot, First Officer Andreas Lubitz, locked the cockpit door from the inside, before plunging the plane in to a terrifying ten minute descent. As the plane hurtled towards the ground at 440mph, Captain Sondenheimer screamed at Lubitz to let him back in to the cockpit. When his demands went unanswered, he attacked the cockpit door with an axe in front of screaming passengers, but it was all in vain. Before he could regain control of the plane, Lubitz smashed it in to the side of a mountain, deep in the French Alps, killing everyone on board.  Learn more about your ad choices. In the summer of 2014, just as the nation was cheering England on in the FIFA World Cup, one man’s obsession with chemsex and so-called ‘unconscious’ pornography was about to collide with horrific consequences. Within 15 months, four young men would be dead at the hands of this predator and the police, whose reputation would lie in tatters, would announce the re-examination of 58 unexplained deaths in the proceeding four years, all linked to this sexual deviant.
