The Last Word On Spurs panel returns as the 2026/27 campaign began in disappointing fashion on Saturday with a 3-0 defeat at Brentford.



Lining up with a number of fresh faces amidst a summer of change, our new-look side struggled to get going at the Gtech Community Stadium and paid the price against a ruthless Bees outfit who established control early on and never looked back, Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt putting them two goals to the good with just over half-an-hour gone before Michael Kayode netted a third with the second period only four minutes old.



The scoreline could have been even worse for us, but Igor Thiago saw his 55th-minute penalty cannon back off the post after Rodrigo Bentancur was deemed to have fouled Kevin Schade in the box. Mikey Moore had our best chances to get off the mark in the second half but was denied three times by home goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher as Brentford capitalised on our period of transition to register their first-ever home Premier League win against us.



We debate whether our pre-season tour was simply a hinderance rather than a benefit and how our midfield was nullified by Brentford summer signing Mamadou Sangaré and whether we can bounce back quickly with Charlton to come on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup and then Newcastle United to follow at home, where Spurs should hopefully welcome Savinho and Omar Marmoush as additional attacking options for both games.

A stoppage-time winner from Richarlison gave our 10 men a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup as we rounded off our pre-season tour in dramatic fashion on Saturday. 


Forced to play almost the entire second half a man down after Kevin Danso was controversially sent off just moments after his introduction, we were indebted to Antonin Kinsky for a handful of incredible saves as we hung in there in front of more than 80,000 fans at the Accor Stadium on Australia’s east coast.



We still carried a threat, Rio Kyerematen cracking a superb effort against the crossbar, but just as we seemed destined for a second penalty shootout in the space of four days, substitute Jamie Donley hit the post and Richarlison was on hand to slide home the rebound, making it a memorable conclusion to our trip Down Under for fans, players and staff alike.



The game also saw Sandro Tonali net his first-ever goal in Spurs colours under Roberto De Zerbi.

The 29-year-old will officially complete his move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 1 July, subject to international clearance. Senesi, capped three times by Argentina, decided to leave Bournemouth earlier in the season after rejecting three contract offers from the club. The centre-back - who has also just been included in Argentina's squad for this summer.


We also reacted to the news that Tottenham have confirmed that Ben Davies has signed a new contract with the club, while Yves Bissouma is leaving as a free agent.  Davies joined Spurs from Swansea City in 2014 and will now extend his stay in north London into a 13th season, having made 363 appearances for the club to date. Only 20 players have played more matches for Tottenham in their history, including Davies' former team-mates Heung-min Son, Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane and Eric Dier. Spurs did not confirm the length of Davies' new deal, but widespread reports on Wednesday said it was a one-year extension.

As one player commits there future, one departs as but there was no new deal for Bissouma, who played the full 90 minutes in the Bilbao showpiece. Bissouma made 111 appearances for Spurs after arriving from Brighton in 2022, scoring two goals – both of which came in the Premier League in 2024-25. We reflect on the potential Bissouma had and why that quite never materialised during his time at Spurs.

On this edition of the show we return to discuss Tottenham Hotspur making an offer to sign defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion. The proposal for the 25-year-old fell short of Brighton’s valuation, but talks continue and as a direct result of how serious the bid was, a transfer could be finalised before the World Cup with the player keen on the move. 
 


Barring any late disasters, free transfers for left-back Andy Robertson and left-sided centre-back Marcos Senesi are expected to be pushed through to be announced after the Premier League transfer window opens on June 15. Both players currently have contracts with Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively until the end of this month.



Spurs are getting two ball-playing defenders, the numbers back that up. Senesi and Van Hecke are a level above Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven in terms of passing ability, we discuss where that leaves Spurs other defenders and who are vulnerable to a summer move.

Appointed two weeks ago following the departure of Igor Tudor, the Italian was unable to change our immediate fortunes as he made his debut as our Head Coach, seeing his new side go down to a narrow 1-0 reverse thanks to a heavily deflected goal from Nordi Mukiele just after the hour mark.



We discuss De Zerbi’s team selection and tactical decisions taken in the game and what he would have learnt ahead of a reunion against his former side Brighton next week.

'Psychologically Dealing With A Relegation Battle'

We discuss Roberto De Zerbi's first pre-match press conference in which he boldly states he knows his first mission is to keep Tottenham in the Premier League but believes the club has everything to challenge for the title in the future.



We also reflect on a week which has seen Mohammed Kudus could miss the rest of the season in a major blow to new Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi. Kudus has been out since the start of January with a quad injury, but had begun to ease his way back into training before the international break.



Kudus had not missed a single game through injury for West Ham but could potentially miss half of his first season at their north London rivals. It was hoped he would be in contention to face Sunderland this weekend in De Zerbi’s first game in charge. However, Spurs have confirmed that Kudus could be set to undergo surgery, ruling him out of Spurs’ final seven games of the season and casting his World Cup hopes with Ghana into doubt.



We debate the icompetence shown by current Sporting Director Johan Lange in which Spurs had the chance to reinforce their squad in the January transfer window, despite the difficulties involved in that market, but only brought through the door a midfielder in Conor Gallagher and 19-year-old left-back Souza, while selling last season's top scorer Brennan Johnson just days before Kudus first suffered his serious quad injury.



Unfortunately, of the long-term players out when Lange made those comments ahead of the trip to face Manchester United in early February, Kudus, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ben Davies all remain side-lined two months later and were added to a week after by Wilson Odobert. Therefore once again raising concern over the medical rehabilitation of players.



The panel also reflect news that Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to sign Andy Robertson as a free agent this summer, subject to retaining their Premier League status and a price has been set for reported goalkeeper target James Trafford.



We finally close on our thoughts of Sunderland, given the fact that The Black Cats are running the risk of losing four straight home league games for the first time since September 2017 in the Championship, and their shoddy Stadium of Light sequence has contributed to their bottom-half ranking in the Premier League table, although they are still within touching distance of seventh-placed Brentford at the time of writing.

The loss was our 19th defeat of the season in all competitions, and the first time in our entire history, we have lost six consecutive matches.



Igor Tudor is the the first manager in Spurs'  history to lose each of his first four games in charge, we unanimously conclude his time at the Club is up and discuss where Tottenham should turn to next, in our bid to retain our Premier League status, ahead of a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League.
