House of the Dragon Preview 5

We’ve got hopes as high as the budget. HOTD caps their budget at a humble $20 million per episode. Meanwhile, Bezos goes full tilt funneling $500 million into The Rings of Power. For comparison, Peter Jackson made the LOTR trilogy with an average of $94 million per movie, modest by today’s high fantasy standards. Fans of fictitious languages, HOTD will have something to tickle your articulators. Will TROP and HOTD be friends, or fight on the streaming playground? Who knows, maybe they’ll both be bad and we can commiserate on Reddit. More linguistic insider scoops: Game of Thrones 2: Electric Bookaloo – Bonus Bookaloo: House of the Dragon and More

The Unofficial Guide to Game of Thrones (with Kim Renfro)

Game of Thrones is not over for a lot of the dedicated fans, and that includes us!  A.Ron is joined by INSIDER’s entertainment correspondent and author Kim Renfro (@kimrrenfro) to discuss her recently released book, The Unofficial Guide to Game of Thrones.  They talk about their favorite chapters, stories, and surprises from the book and all of the seasons of HBO's show.

Series Wrap Up

We come here to say goodbye to Game of Thrones. While we're still going to get to play around in this universe courtesy HBO's numerous prequels, sequels, and spin-offs planned, and of course George's assurances that he's still writing, we're not going to get any more of this particular take on the story. How do we feel about this? Does The Last Watch documentary change those feelings? We discuss these and more before getting the final words from feedback. We'll see you all for "Fire & Blood" and the prequels!

806 - The Iron Throne - SpoiLore Edition

In our penultimate podcast for HBO's Game of Thrones, we invite Gods of Thrones co-author Anthony Le Donne back to the studio to discuss how the book might resolve in ways that are consistent, but perhaps more satisfying, than some found the show's resolution. Then we're off to feedback, where we talk about Martin's progress on Winds, our thoughts on Bran the Broken, where things line up with Dany's prophecies in the final analysis, and much more on "The Iron Throne". See you next week as we sign off and transform the podcast into a Thrones prequels feed!

806 - The Iron Throne

Winter came and went, an evil queen was overthrown, and it was so nice we had to do it twice. "The Iron Throne" is Game of Thrones attempt to hurry up and tie up all those loose ends. Was it satisfying? That depends on how you've felt about the show for the past two seasons. Ultimately, this show's final moments and it's place in the pantheon of television will be a matter of hot debate for years to come, to say nothing of the novels and prequels and sequels we'll be getting, and how that may change and influence how we feel. Here, we're content to just talk about our personal thoughts on the only definitive finale of The Song and Ice and Fire. We'll be back Friday for more SpoiLore talk, and next week we'll have a look back at the season, and series, as a whole as we wrap things up for now.

805 - The Bells - SpoiLore Edition

Jim and I try to sort through everyone's reactions and feelings about "The Bells", as well as people's reactions to our reactions! In a wide ranging podcast, we discuss what we're still hoping to see in next week's finale episode, what Dany's descent to madness means in the context of portrayals of heroic women, thoughts on capital punishment and vengeance, and defenses and deconstructions of Arya and Jaime's arcs. All this plus a ton of great feedback from you, the listener. Just one more episode left, we'll see you Sunday night to discuss!

805 - The Bells

It’s time to have a family discussion about Game of Thrones episode 805, “The Bells”. Because we’re all up in arms about it and we can’t agree if it’s the best, most satisfying episode or the worst ever. It’s notoriously hard to be objective about a subjective opinion, but we try our level best. Our considered thoughts…

804 - The Last of the Starks - SpoiLore Edition

Jim and I are here to talk everyone through their complicated feelings about “The Last of the Starks”, as well as to sit in judgment of the latest batch of fan theories. I lead a group therapy session, and struggle to come to grips with my conflicting thoughts on Dany’s possible turn as heel, as…

804 - The Last of the Starks

As we announced last week, we've declared #FanBankruptcy, and are along for the ride on this saddleless dragon we call Game of Thrones. Keeping this in mind, it was nice to see this episode, "The Last of the Starks", run back to their roots in setting up some classic court politics and intrigue, with multiple betrayals and backstabbing in the offing! Jaime and Brienne hooked up! Pod is still very much the Rod! The Stark girls won grim smiles from the Hound! On the other hand, they're still struggling with the way they are telling the story they want to tell; characters die in unbelievable ways, and crucially characters then later live in completely unbelievable ways. With just two more episodes left, hopefully the Double D's haven't declared creative bankruptcy and we'll get a few twists and turns that manage to please most.

803 - The Long Night - SpoiLore Edition

We're excited to have our buddy Kim Renfro from Insider back on to help us work through our feelings about "The Long Night"! Kim's writing a book on Thrones, which is available for pre-order now. We discuss GRRM and the Double D's relationship, and how we feel the final season of the show will reflect the future(?) potential(?) books. Then we consider a ton of amazing feedback from you! The listener!
03/05/191h 44m

803 - The Long Night

After further review, we feel like Game of Thrones' epic episode, "The Long Night" was structurally sound, but mechanically weak. Dark, muddy, with ambiguous action, we thought the setup and anticipation was strong, and we're not even upset about the way in ended, but there is so much head scratching about how we got there,  and how utterly passive most of the heroes (and even head villain) was throughout most of the episode. Obvious the fandom is quite torn over the immediate aftermath of "The Long Night", and only time will tell whether Thrones can deliver a holistic end that will leave the majority feeling satisfied, but there is quite a bit more work to be done on that front than we'd have expected after last week's excellent setup. We'll be back Friday to talk about the episode from a Lore/Book standpoint, and of course we'll be back this Sunday to see how our heroes fair after surviving the Night. See you then!

802 - A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - SpoiLore Edition

Jim and A.Ron mine the hidden depths of Game of Thrones extensive lore and backstory to answer your questions and debate fan theories. Is Harrenhal the ultimate anti-wight hideout? Are there any Children of the Forest left in the world? What was the meaning and possible  significance of Jenny's Song from the latest episode? All this and more are discussed in this episode!
26/04/191h 23m

802 - A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Jim and A.Ron get sentimental over the very nostalgic episode of Game of Thrones, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”. Given the way this episode ends, this might be the last bit of sweetness and light many of these characters receive. Gulp. Dany is having trouble sharing power, Tyrion struggles to get his mojo back, Arya is looking…

801 - Winterfell - SpoiLore Edition

Jim and A.Ron are here to delve into the deeper mysteries of Game of Thrones, discussing the lore, prophecies, and world building that make Thrones great. Some of this material could be construed as spoilery, as it involves informed speculation about events that could happen on the show based on material found in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.  We do not discuss production spoilers or leaks on this podcast. Today we talk dragons in the north, Valonqar prophecies, the weirdification of Bran Stark, Night King plots and much more!
19/04/191h 5m

801 - Winterfell

Jim and A.Ron are here to break down all the action from this week's premiere episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Winterfell". And indeed the ancestral home of House Stark houses the direwolf's share of the action and intrigue, as characters are reunited, dragons are flown, and divisions within the forces of the Living threaten to undermine the war against the Dead. It's clear that sharing power and cooperating is going to be a challenge, not only for Jon and Dany, but for the many different peoples who have thrown in their lot with them. We'll be back Friday for our SpoiLORE edition that delves into the background details of the World of Ice and Fire as well as mines for hidden details that may yet remain in the source books!

Spoiler warning for anyone sitting the promotional material, because we'll be analyzing this thing frame by frame! We'll also be discussing our plans for coverage of season 8; which we hope will be the most current and comprehensive around. Does Jon become a dragon rider? What could possibly terrify Arya? Who is the mysterious leader of the Golden Company? Why does the Mountain look like a cross between a Kong-brand dog toy and a butt plug? All these questions and more are covered!

“Gods of Thrones” Vol. 2 Preview Podcast #2!

A.Ron and Anthony are back to talk Game of Thrones and Gods of Thrones! This week we discuss the curious coincidence of Stark children warging, how the British legend of Bran the Blessed could tie into the fate of Brandon Stark, and how Jaqen H’ghar functions as a literary genie of the bottle. Listener, you ain’t never had…

“Gods of Thrones” – “Fire and Blood” – Part 3

We're back with a super-sized wrap up episode for our coverage of our new book, Gods of Thrones, as well as putting George's Fire & Blood to bed as we consider the final third of the book, starting with "The Dying of the Dragons: Rhaenyra Triumphant". Anthony and I get things kicked off with a discussion of Lord Cregan Stark and his "Hour of the Wolf". Then I welcome our old pal Kim Renfro (follow her on Twitter!) back to discuss women in Westeros, our theories on Game of Thrones and GRRM himself. Finally, I interview illustrator Chase Stone, who did the cover and interior art for Gods of Thrones, about life as a professional artist, his work on Magic: The Gathering and The World of Ice and Fire, as well as his influences and techniques.
14/12/182h 20m

“Gods of Thrones” – “Fire and Blood” – Part 2

Anthony jones me once again as we discuss the second third of GRRM's new Fire & Blood, as we consider from "Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Their Triumphs and Tragedies" to "The Dying of the Dragons: Rhaenyra Triumphant". Firewyrms! Mysteries of the wall! Dragon eggs beneath Winterfell! And many other interesting twists and tidbits we found in this fake history book detailing the first 150 years of Targaryen reign over Westeros.
07/12/181h 11m

“Gods of Thrones” – “Fire and Blood” – Part 1

My Gods of Thrones co-author Anthony is back once again as we do a deep dive on GRRM's latest work, Fire & Blood! We talk about events up to but not including "Jaehaerys and Alysanne, Their Triumphs and Tragedies". Next week we'll be reading up to "The Dying of the Dragons, Rhaenyra Triumphant", before finishing the book the week after. This week's all about Aegon, Maegor, and the third generation Targaryen that really steals the show, Jaehaerys! We talk about the gossipy tone the Maester sometimes takes, the doctrinal concept of "Targaryen Exceptionalism", missing dragon eggs, maester conspiracy theories, and that most well worn Thrones hobbyhorse, incest.
30/11/181h 9m

“Gods of Thrones” – “Fire and Blood” Initial Thoughts

Anthony and I talk about GRRM's latest book, Fire and Blood, which is a complete and in-depth historical account of the 300 year old Targaryen dynasty in Westeros. We discuss our initial thoughts, anything that might have changed some of our thoughts in Gods of Thrones, any intriguing jumping off points for theory-crafting, and consider fan feedback. Also, Anthony has some stunning revelations about the possible origins of the rib-bone that God took from Adam to make the first woman in the Genesis creation story. You don't want to miss this!
23/11/181h 19m

“Gods of Thrones” – Chattin’ Catelyn

Anthony and A.Ron continue their deep dive into the characters and themes from their new book, "Gods of Thrones". Now available on paperback! Today we're talking about a polarizing character among the fandom, Catelyn Stark. What are the essential differences between Book!Cat and TV!Cat? What is her worst move in playing the Game? Who would win in an all-female Houseoff? How vital is Lady Stoneheart's arc to understanding Catelyn, and why does the show skip it entirely? We discuss and debate all this and more!
15/11/181h 25m

“Gods of Thrones” – Talking Tyrion

It goes without saying that Tyrion Lannister is an extremely interesting character in A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones, but  you'd think he'd make a poor focus for our book on Westerosi religion. After all, he's famously skeptical of superstition and faith in a world full of magic, physics defying creatures, and powerful gods. But it's precisely that contradiction that makes him so fascinating in this context! Join Anthony and I for a deep dive into Tyrion, the events that have shaped him, and the journey that has brought him before a dragon goddess that he can believe in. Have questions or feedback? Send it in using the contact info below...

“Gods of Thrones” – Introduction

We have a special series of podcasts for you coming out over the next few weeks! Dr. Anthony Le Donne joins me today to talk about the new book we co-authored in the off-season, Gods of Thrones: A Pilgrim's Guide to the Religions of Ice and Fire, available now on Amazon. The book is filled with fun analysis of the religions, cultures, and characters of Game of Thrones and delves into the real life history and religion that inspired GRRM when creating his world. We discuss our history with Thrones/Song, as well as our book, its tone, our writing process, and our favorite things we learned in our research. We'll be back next week to talk more Gods of Thrones and take your questions. Later this month we'll be joined by some of your favorite podcast hosts and writers to host a three part book club-style review of George R.R. Martin's upcoming historical book on the Targaryens, Fire and Blood!
01/11/1854m 36s

310 - Mhysa

And just like that, we put HBO's Game of Thrones season three into the Bald Move history books. Again. "Mhysa" is an excellent way to wrap up the season and set the table for season four, as we get great work out of all our star-crossed lovers; Tyrion, Shae, Sansa, Jon, and Ygritte. Arya has some fine work servicing the fan's desire to see her be the terrifying little murder beast we know she can be while simultaneously making us feel really, really bad for her lot in life. Ramsay might be a total and complete bastard, but he does know how to work a pork sausage to get some laughs in an other wise pitch black scene. Finally, Dany attempts to end her season three arc on a note of triumph, but is hampered by the racial tone deafness of the show runners. Thanks for joining us on this ride! We'll be back in November to discuss Martin's new book on Targaryen history, Fire and Blood, as well as Anthony and I's new book, Gods of Thrones.
13/09/182h 7m

309 - The Rains of Castamere

This week we have the pleasure of talking about one of the best, and most gut wrenching episodes of HBO's Game of Thrones, "The Rains of Castamere". The Lannisters score a decisive victory against the Starks in surprising and brutal fashion. Particularly rough is Arya, who is forced to witness the destruction of her family when she was oh so close to being reunited with them. Over in Essos, Dany provides a lone bright point as her captains' valor and her reputation as Breaker of Chains lays the slave city of Yunkai at her feet. We'll be back next week to wrap this season up. See you then!
06/09/181h 35m

308 - Second Sons

Jim and A.Ron consider the latest episode in our summer re-watch of season three of HBO's Game of Thrones. "Second Sons" features the second happiest wedding we've ever seen on Westeros (which is damning with non-existent praise), Arya swinging from utter despair to something approaching optimism in her captivity with the Hound (the sweet, summer child), as newcomer Daario Naharis steals into Dany's camp attempts to steal Dany's heart. We discuss all this and more!
30/08/181h 23m

307 - The Bear and the Maiden Fair

On this week's episode of our summer Game of Thrones rewatch, "The Bear and the Maiden Fair", Brienne picks on someone her own size, Joffery tries talking politics with his grandpa, Robb YOLOs his way through a fraught political position to buy some extra time to consort with his queen, and Sansa and Tyrion lament their respective fates. For feedback we discuss the relative intelligence of wights, debate the apparent height of the Wall, and consider people's pet theories on what things will look like post series-finale of Thrones. See you back here next week!
23/08/181h 36m

306 - The Climb

We're back with another terrific season three episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "The Climb". Of course the title refers to the Wildlings' epic climb of The Wall, but also Littlefinger's unhinged speech about chaos delivered to a shell shocked Varys. Both are amazing in their way, as is Lady Olena and Lord Tywin's political duel in the Hand's chambers. We discuss all this plus tons of fan commentary and questions!
16/08/181h 40m

305 - Kissed by Fire

Lots of things get "Kissed by Fire" in this episode of HBO's Game of Thrones. The Hound. Jon Snow. Leslie's Rose. But in all seriousness there is so much good packed into this hour of Thrones; Robb beheading an important bannerman in the pouring rain; Jaime venting a lifetime of frustration and regret upon an unsuspecting Brienne; Tywin managing to bitterly disappoint both of the children he has in his presence; and Dany looking more and more like the Conquerer that she thinks she's destined to be. Join us for a lengthy discussion of all of this and more, and just a metric ton of feedback from your fellow fans. See you next week!
09/08/182h 2m

304 - And Now His Watch Is Ended

We really enjoyed "And Now His Watch Is Ended", the latest episode in our summer rewatch of HBO's Game of Thrones series. Packed with intellectually satisfying intrigue, as well as one of the more satisfying action scenes in Thrones history, it has something for just about everyone. We ponder the comeuppance of Tywin's children, the finer points of contract law in Essos, and the altruism of the Tyrells. Plus, a super sized mailbag and the promise of another next week!
02/08/181h 48m

303 - Walk of Punishment

Jim and A.Ron take in the episode "Walk of Punishment" of the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones. Dany struggles to find a moral middle ground as she strikes a bargain for a massive slave army, Robb struggles with his command, Theon gets a glimmer of hope, Jaime is taught a harsh truth about the value of his family name. See you back next week as our summer re-watch rolls on!
26/07/181h 13m

302 - Dark Wings, Dark Words

Jim and A.Ron do a retrospective review of HBO's Game of Thrones episode, "Dark Wings, Dark Words", same format, we first do a non-spoiler review then get in depth and spoilery at the end of the podcast. We discuss the Reed children who make their first appearance this episode, analyze Shae and Tyrion's relationship, fear for Margaery's life as she tries to dance around the psychotic Joffrey, and catch up with Arya, Jaime, Brienne, and Robb. Thanks for all the great participation this week! Next week we'll be dealing with an abbreviated mailbag due to our travel plans, but that just means a super sized feedback the week after!
19/07/181h 38m

301 - Valar Dohaeris

Jim and A.Ron are back for the summer re-watch of HBO's Game of Thrones season 3. Might as well start at the beginning, with episode 301, "Valar Dohaeris". Daddy's back in town, which is an interesting dynamic which finds Tyrion and Cersei trying to find their place, Margaery attempts to win over the peoples' hearts and minds, Jon sells his role as double agent, and Dany struggles with the morality of liberating a continent using slave labor. All this, plus lots of feedback! See you next week...

Season Three Preview

We're back to ambush your podcast feeds with a summer re-watch of HBO's Game of Thrones season three! If you've seen the show, you know this is a red banner year for the series with tons of the twists and tragedies we've come to expect. And if this is your first time through, relax! We'll be doing our level best to keep all spoilers for future episodes and seasons confined to the very end of the podcast where you can easily skip them.  For this, our season three kick off, please enjoy the live podcast we taped in front of an audience at the awesome Con of Thrones from Dallas this year. We'll be back next week with full coverage of the season three premiere, "Valar Dohaeris"! Got feedback? Send it in using the links below and we might consider it on air!
05/07/1855m 12s

210 - Valar Morghulis

Jim and A.Ron finish our retrospective re-watch of season two of HBO's Game of Thrones with the finale, "Valar Morghulis".  It's a typical GoT finale, in that it does a great job of setting up the next season as something you can barely wait to arrive.  Arya could start super assassin training!  The White Walkers are marching on the Night's Watch!  Dany's dragons can spit fire!  We talk about these topics and a ton of last minute feedback before signing off with some spoilers for season 2 as well as debating a few lingering season 7 stuff in the secluded SpoiLore section.  See you next year!
13/11/172h 5m

209 - Blackwater

Jim and A.Ron are nearing the finish line of their retro-re-watch of Game of Thrones season two.  This week is one of the all time great episodes, "Blackwater".  There aren't many heroes or villains in this one, just brave men fighting each other in desperate and bloody fashion.  Great action, but even greater character moments for Sansa, Cersei, Tyrion, and the Hound.  We have a lot of fun gushing over this episode,  then we bat clean up with feedback and our SpoiLore section at the very end of the podcast.
06/11/171h 32m

208 - The Prince of Winterfell

Jim and A.Ron's rewatch of HBO's Game of Thrones continues with "The Prince of Winterfell".  We're really feeling the tension as the countdown to the invasion of Stannis approaches zero.  Also, Robb commits political suicide, the Halfhand recruits Jon for a dangerous mission, and Arya tries to escape Harrenhal before it's too late.  All this plus feedback, and at the end of the podcast our SpoiLore section where we delve deeper into the history and lore of Westeros.  Need to catch up?  Here's a Tinfoil SpoiLore archive of previous podcasts by topic. Each link has a time code listed so you can jump right to the tinfoil topic of the week for your convenience and listening pleasure.
30/10/171h 52m

207 - A Man Without Honor

Jim and A.Ron consider "A Man Without Honor", the latest season two episode on our re-watch of HBO's Game of Thrones.  This episode is about revealing the true characters of people like Jamie, Cersei, Tyrion, Tywin, Shae, Sansa, and Robb, and the thing you take away is that these are all people, multifaceted, conflicting, contradictory, but in a way that feels human and real.  And Dany, is you know... looking for her dragons.
23/10/171h 30m

206 - The Old Gods and the New

The realm is apparently unsafe for those beloved to Theon and A.Ron this week as we discuss the treachery of Theon sacking Winterfell, the role A.Ron had in the death of Roy Dotrice (94), along with everything else that this decidedly good episode of Game of Thrones had to offer.
17/10/171h 33m

205 - The Ghost of Harrenhal

Jim and A.Ron re-watched Game of Thrones episode "The Ghost of Harrenhal", break it's neck, and throw it off a parapet.  Just kidding, but we do bite into it like Jaqen into an apple.  We discuss tortured metaphors, Brienne's rushing into commitments, Stannis' reluctance to face The Truth, and Arya's fun and exciting new friends at Harrenhal.  All this and a bunch of interesting feedback, and a lore and history packed SpoiLore section!
10/10/172h 1m

204 - Garden of Bones

Jim and A.Ron re-watch episode 204 of HBO's Game of Thrones series, "Garden of Bones", and mine a rich vein of almost forgotten Peak Tyrion. We also got gummed up with a clumsy arrival of Daenerys at the great city of Qarth, and Jim can't take Lancel seriously, and we're both really bummed out about the arrival of this season's re-cast "Mountain", but the arrival of the fantastic Papa Lannister single-handedly makes up for all of it.  Another great season 2 episode, is what we're saying, and we have some terrific feedback to go along with it.
03/10/172h 4m

203 - What is Dead May Never Die

Jim and A.Ron continue their re-watch campaign of HBO's Game of Thrones with "What is Dead May Never Die".  There is some really strong stuff in here; Tyrion's canary trap for the Small Council, the heroic and badass last stand of Yoren, the introduction of two fantastic new characters in the forms of Brienne of Tarth and Margary Tyrell.  But there is also some less fun stuff; like anything to do with Shae. But all in all a great episode despite not featuring Dany or Robb.  All this discussion, plus a healthy heaping of feedback ahead!
26/09/171h 29m

202 - The Night Lands

A.Ron and Jim continue their rewatch of season two of HBO's Game of Thrones with "The Night Lands".  On this podcast, we discuss the opposite of a headless horsemen, Tyrion's tragic flaws, Theon's ignorance of his personal history and that of his people, the Iron Islanders, and the moral quandary of the Night's Watch.  Also, A.Ron apologizes for muffing up the White Raven lore from the previous podcast.  All this and tons of feedback coming your way!

201 - The North Remembers

And now our (re)watch begins with "The North Remembers", the season two premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones series.  We'll be working our way through the entire second season, the first half of the episode is entirely spoiler free for first time viewers, then we'll have a mini-SpoiLore section after we play the end of pod theme music for people who are caught up on the books / show.  In this episode we're appreciating Tyrion's swagger, Sansa's strength, Robb's toughness, and Jon's girlish good looks. We'll have more every Tuesday over the next ten weeks, so settle in for a long trip down GoT memory lane!  See you next week!

Season 7 SpoiLore Wrap Up - BONUS Episode

In a bonus wrap up SpoiLore episode for Game of Thrones season 7, A.Ron is joined by Kim Renfro, Senior Culture Writer for INSIDER, to discuss our thoughts on season 7 as a whole, leaks, how production spoilers impacted our coverage of this season, and what we think about the far off season 8.  Be warned, at the very end of the episode we do dish a bit on the last remaining unconfirmed leak for this season, which may come up next time.  If you're a serious spoiler-phobe, make sure you shut off the pod when we get to that point.  If you need more Kim in your life, check out her podcast series, Showrunners, or follow her on Twitter.  Our regular edition of SpoiLore will be out tomorrow!

Season 7 Wrapup

Jim and A.Ron close the books on the non-book spoiler part of our season 7 coverage of HBO's Game of Thrones.  Of course, we'll be back later this week to put the SpoilLore segment to bed, and don't forget that starting next week we'll be jumping head first into our rewatch of season 2, AKA the Tyrion Lannister Golden Years.  But for now, we dive into a heaping helping of feedback trying to sum up the experience of this seasons, and looking ahead to next.  Regardless of when it comes back, Summer of 2018 or Spring of 2019, we'll right there with you as Game of Thrones heads towards it's conclusion.  Hope you stay with us through our season 2 coverage and beyond, as we look forward to tackling Stranger Things, Mr. Robot, The Walking Dead, and Westworld, to name just a few in the months ahead!

707 - The Dragon and the Wolf

Jim and A.Ron develop their thoughts on the season finale of HBO's Game of Thrones, "The Lion and the Wolf".  Many were pleased, yet there are some lingering resentments.  We try to talk through why we thought Cersei's scheming, Sansa and Arya's collaboration, and the Night King's ultimate plan to cross the wall made a lot of sense both from a plot and character standpoint, but we definitely leave room for people who have trouble looking past how we arrived there.  In the end, we both agree that the series is set for a thrilling and satisfying conclusion, and the DD's have nearly twice the time to develop it.  Will they succeed?  Can Martin eventually do better? Join us next week as we wrap up our Season 7 coverage and try to answer these questions and more.  And don't forget Friday, as we delve into the deeper meanings and book implications for the events of this season!  See you then.

707 - The Dragon and the Wolf - Instant Take

Jim and A.Ron declare that the finale of HBO's Game of Thrones, "The Dragon and the Wolf", did enough to, if not completely excuse the issues of the past few episodes, at least have us back to being fully excited and eager to see the story resume... probably  sometime in 2019.  That's a long wait, and for as much grief we've given the Double D's here and there, we're really going to miss their show while it's away.  But that's just two guys opinions.  What did you think?  Tell us at the links below!  We'll be back Tuesday for a full featured analysis and tons of feedback, then we'll talk about how the finale impacts our understanding of book and show prophecies and predictions.  See you then!

25/08/171h 40m

706 - Beyond the Wall

HBO's Game of Thrones episode 706, "Beyond the Wall" has been extremely polarizing for all of us fans, which, say what you will, isn't something that you want to be saying about the penultimate episode of the penultimate season of the biggest TV show in the history of the world.  Are people too focused on picking nits?  Or has the storytelling really gone off the rails this season?  Whether we're seeing the first signs of shark jumping or just hitting a rough patch remains to be seen, but we discuss the good, bad, and ugly of this week, including the many fine conversations between our heroes, saying good bye to characters both red shirted and beloved, and arrive at the conclusion of the fairly silly plan to convince Kings Landing to join in the fight against the Army of the Dead.  Next week will be better.  Please?
22/08/172h 33m

706 - Beyond the Wall - Instant Take

A.Ron and Jim are loving this episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Beyond the Wall", that is admittedly about 20% ridiculous and 80% pure awesome.  I know that 20% is going to bother a lot of you guys and gals, but come on!  So many epic things are happening!  Ice zombies! Dragons!  Ice zombie dragons?!?  Don't worry about the logic of Jon's plan, or his idea of fighting a ridiculous single man rear guard, or the Night King's questionable targeting decisions.  In our book, when Game of Thrones follows the Rule of Cool, it tends to rule plain and simple.  Tell us why we're wrong!  We'll talk about it, at length, Tuesday.  See you then!

18/08/171h 14m

705 - Eastwatch

Jim and A.Ron try to talk about an incredibly entertaining episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Eastwatch", while also dealing the the fact that the main thrust of the plot is dubious at best.  And we're not talking about jetpacks or wonky numbers of ships and wagons, we're talking about the main mission North of the Wall.  Why does anyone think this is a good idea?  On the other hand, we've come around on the Arya and Sansa intrigue, and there is a whole lot else to like... Gendry and Jon reprising Robert and Ned's adventures. Davos showing off his sweet smuggling skills.  Drogon doing what Drogon does best, looking majestic AF and generally being jaw dropping in every scene he's in, including the one where he gets his snout snuggled.  That's impressive range for a fake dragon, ya'll. All this, plus we got more emails than Davos has bad crab meat, and we're back Friday to do it all over again, SpoiLORE style.  See you then!
15/08/172h 17m

705 - Eastwatch - Instant Take

Jim and A.Ron have seen the very latest episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Eastwatch".  There was some awesome stuff no doubt, a very special someone picks up a hammer, two brothers reunite, Ser Davos out-Han Solos Han Solo, and Sansa and Arya bicker like season one.  But the creaks and cracks of the Double D's kicking the plot into hyperdrive are starting to be heard and felt.  Hopefully it's just a minor case of dragon indigestion, and not a sign of more serious tears and holes in the realistic, grounded, dragon and zombie infested world they've so carefully constructed.

704 - The Spoils of War

Jim and A.Ron break down the latest episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "The Spoils of War".  An episode with sheer spectacle of the might of Daenerys' armies unleashed upon Westoros balanced by great character moments with the Stark children in Winterfell and perhaps a budding romance between King and Queen, it's basically everything you want in Game of Thrones.  We discuss Bran's attachment to humanity and try to figure out exactly what he knows, analyze Littlefinger's remaining options, geek out over Arya and Dany being badasses, and question Tyrion's loyalty.  All this, plus tons of feedback!  And don't forget, we'll be back Friday with more lore, backstory, and book inspired theories and analysis.
08/08/172h 12m

704 - The Spoils of War - Instant Take

Jim and A.Ron have seen tonight's episode of HBO's Game of Thrones entitled, "Spoils of War", and pronounce it hotter than dragon fire.  An instant all time great episode, with visual thrills and spectacle enough to make 10,000 complaints about jet packs and fleet sizes bend the knee.  If you don't like it, dracarys.  Enjoy our raving about how awesome Arya, Sansa, Brienne, Bronn, Drogon, Dany, Jon, a billion Dothraki screamers were for about 20 hot minutes, then please come back Tuesday for our more reasoned thoughts and opinions, as well as those of legions of our fellow fans.  And Friday, we'll talk about Child of the Forest cave paintings, and who knows what else.  See you then!

28/07/171h 23m

702 - Stormborn

Jim and A.Ron "Stormborn" was a great episode of Game of Thrones, with tons of highlight scenes. It also has a bit of a Euron and Sandsnake problem, but we don't think it's fatal, assuming Dan and David can tear off the affected portions of the show and apply medicinal ointment to stem the spread of ludicrous jetpackery and shipbuildery that threaten our collective suspension of disbelief. We also discuss Sansa and Jon's uneasy sharing of power, Littlefinger's increasing desperation, what price Tyrion will pay for his plan failing, and Arya's emotional reunion on the show. All this, tons of feedback, and WAIT THERE'S MORE! A whole SpoiLore edition of the show coming out Friday!

110 - Fire and Blood

Welcome to our coverage of the final episode of HBO's Game of Thrones series, "Fire and Blood". This episode provides a bit of both substances. We talk about the surprising success of Dany's little ritual, a shockingly spry Grand Maester, the promise of an epic ranging of the Night's Watch, and Robb being proclaimed DA KING IN DA NORFFF!! by his loyal bannermen. Not to mention tons of feedback, and our spoiler section safely tucked at the end of our podcast to avoid the ruination of future episodes for the first time fans.
13/09/162h 27m

109 - Baelor

Jim and A.Ron review a shocking episode 109 of HBO's Game of Thrones series, "Baelor". Things are going surprisingly well for Robb in his campaign to meet the Lannister forces in battle, surprisingly bad for Dany and Drogo over in Essos, and in King's Landing? Well, all I can say is never hand a 15 year old boy-king an open mic.
06/09/162h 1m

108 - The Pointy End

Jim and A.Ron continue their re-watch of season one of HBO's Game of Thrones series, with episode 108, "The Pointy End". Another incredible early season episode, action packed with two epic fight scenes, direwolf savagery, zombie killings, Lannister wheeling and dealing, and intrigues and treachery galore. All this, and a ton of feedback, plus our customary spoiler section at the end where we talk about lore, character motivations, foreshadowing, and the rare continuity problem or two.
30/08/162h 16m

107 - You Win or You Die

Jim and A.Ron are thrilled to be back for a sneaky good episode 107 of HBO's Game of Thrones, "You Win or You Die". Featuring the impressive debut of Daddy Lannister, a thrilling inspirational (before it gets scary) speech by Drogo, and more scheming, machinations, and back stabbing than you can shake a bundle of rushes at. Classic Game of Thrones, basically. All that, plus super-sized mailbags of both the unspoiled and spoiler variety, coming your way.

609 - Battle of the Bastards

Jim and A.Ron consider the thrilling episode 609 of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Battle of the Bastards". While it could perhaps be accused of having far more heart than brains, director Miguel Sapochnik goes for broke to make us as the audience collectively feel the horrors of war and the heat of dragon's breath. What price will the victor's pay? And what happens next? All these questions and more are considered, with the help of feedback and commentary from our fellow fans.
21/06/162h 12m

609 - Battle of the Bastards - Instant Take

Jim and A.Ron survey the horrors of war that is episode 609 of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Battle of the Bastards", and proclaim it brutal, ultimately satisfying, if a tad predictable. There were no real surprises to be found tonight if you've been paying attention the past few weeks, but it's still nice to see the end of some truly nasty regimes tonight, even if the casualties were high in both the statistical and personal sense. At this stage each loss of life is going to hurt in the war to come, that still awaits north of the wall. And we still don't know the true cost of the hasty alliances made with the Greyjoys and Littlefinger's Arryn forces. And will Sansa's talk of "no one" be prophetic? We ponder all this and more in this Instant Take. Be sure to rejoin us on Tuesday for our complete scene by scene break down with tons of commentary from our fellow fans.

608 - No One

Jim and A.Ron still don't like the resolution of Arya's Bravosi plotline, but admire a lot of the other goings on in the latest episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "No One". The problem is, that's a big part of the episode and over two years of investment into Arya's Faceless Men training, so, it's no minor thing. Other topics include the duality of Jaime, what's next for King's Landing, and is Sandor considering a second career as people's champion?
14/06/162h 10m

608 - No One - Instant Take

Jim and A.Ron are not sure what to make of Arya's plot tonight during the latest episode of Game of Thrones, "No One". And yes, while the Mountain wrecking and Sandor chopping was admittedly cool, and the 30 seconds of Dany kind of made up for Tyrion's stale comedy stylings, and far be it from us to look askance at any scene where Jaime and Brienne make moon eyes at each other and speak of honor, we're kind of bummed that the King and High Sparrow seems to have dumped a bucket of cold water on our Cleganebowl hopes. No man is as accursed as a Hypeslayer, Tommen.

607 - The Broken Man

We're here to get HYPE and talk about Game of Thrones latest episode, "The Broken Man". The big questions: what's next for Sandor? Does it involve a reunion with his bigger, badder, deader brother? What the seven hells did we just see happen with Arya? Was that even Arya? How is Jaime going to flush the Blackfish down the toilet? What's Sansa up to, and is it going to be the worst or greatest thing ever? So much to discuss, and you get an extra long podcast of analysis and feedback from our fellow fans to help you get ready for the wars episodes to come.

607 - The Broken Man - Instant Take

Jim and A.Ron GOT HYPE!!! for the latest episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "The Broken Man". Give a listen, and see if you're hype meter doesn't peg as well. So much to like. Jaime, Olena, and the Blackfish were on point tonight. The Double Ds built a draw bride. Some people live, some people die, and then some person is dying? Another shocker, or audience manipulation? We'll have to wait a frustrating 7 days to find out, but in the meanwhile let's debate! We'll be our main cast a day early (Monday afternoon), so it's off to the races for feedback, and of course we'll be back Friday to collectively lose our minds in the SpoiLore podcast!

We consider the many visions Bran experienced as he "becomes" the Three Eyed Raven, the surprising appearance of a Stark long since lost, the fizzle of a show down between the Sparrows and the Lannister/Tyrell alliance, Arya choosing sides, Gilly not passing the muster, and Dany making yet another inspiring speech. All this, plus tons and tons of feedback from your fellow fans. See you Friday for the SpoiLore edition, where we delve deep into the prophecies, visions, and tinfoil theories spawned by the books and lore behind A Song of Ice and Fire!

606 - Blood of My Blood - Instant Take

Jim and A.Ron give their snap observations and opinions of the latest Game of Thrones episode, "Blood of My Blood". One the one hand, it's kind of classic "move the pieces around the chessboard" episode, but on the other hand, anyone who has said politics is boring has never seen a stump speech given while mounted on a dragon. Also, sword heists, Waif Watch, and The Bronn That is Promised! We'll be back Tuesday with a whole lot more podcast and a big old bag of feedback. See you then!

605 - The Door

Another fantastic episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "The Door", has a ton of the trademark shocking character deaths, and... time travel? Some of you are frightened of the possibility, many more are excited, but it's certainly an intriguing concept that has us re-examining historical events in a Bran(d) new light. Other topics considered; Sansa's mild distrust of Jon, the dueling Red Priestesses, a hostile Greyjoy takeover, a mummer's farce that Arya is not too fond of, and crazy bananas action North o' the Wall. All this and just vast, unimaginable quantities of feedback, coming right at you.

604 - Book of the Stranger

Jim and A.Ron, after careful sober analysis, declare "Book of the Stranger" an awesome episode of HBO's Game of Thornes. In an impressive display of girl power, Sansa and Jon team up to take back the North, Cersie and the Queen of Thorns conspire to take back King's Landing, Yara helps her brother find his spine, Dany flips braziers and sets fire to many a Khal's ambition, and Osha... well, Osha finds that there are still limits to what a gal can get away with in Westeros, but we're mostly okay with that because it seems like Ramsey already has a noose around his neck and doesn't even know it. And that's not even the half of it. Pink letters, Tormund and Brienne shipping, Littlefinger scheming, and much more coming straight up.
17/05/162h 13m

604 - Book of the Stranger - Instant Take

After seeing episode 604 of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Book of the Stranger", Jim wants to shout from the rooftops "TARGARYENS ARE FIREPROOF!!" I desperately want to argue with him, but he's right. About this particular Targaryen in this TV show version of Westeros, anyway, and it was admittedly cool. Me, I liked the emotional heft and tingles from the Sansa and Jon reunion, the Theon and Yara/Asha reunion, I even enjoyed the Littlefinger / Robin reunion was fairly awesome. Very interesting to see what people ultimately think of this episodes, especially book fans... has Martin been lying to us this whole time, or are the Double Ds making some smart and cinema friendly edits? We'll talk more on the full podcast coming out Tuesday!

603 - Oathbreaker

A.Ron and Jim consider the latest episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Oathbreaker". Twirling swords, absent Ice, dragon psychology, Jon's resignation, and time travel, yes, time travel, are all discussed at length. Episode 602 of HBO's Game of Thrones, "Home", is just a stellar hour of television. For once, it seems like everyone is on (or off?) the same page, with delights for show watchers and book readers of every stripe. Tyrion's risky gamble, the Bolton empire rapidly crumbling, giants of all shapes and sizes smashing all the heads, there is a lot to take in and discuss and we try our level best to talk about it all, with the help of a Wun Wun sized mail bag. 602 - Home - Instant Take

Jim and A.Ron struggle to process the events that transpire in the wide ranging and absolutely packed episode 602, "Home". And we'll be back Tuesday, with another few watches under our belt, and we're sure that everyone out there has lots to say. 601 – The Red Woman

The first episode of season six of HBO's "Game of Thrones", entitled "The Red Woman", seems to be a real controversy with the fans. Disappearing dogs, dead-end Dorne, and shifty Sand Snakes, among other things, caused the flipping of thousands of tables across the globe. What did we think? Brace yourself, contrarian opinion is coming; we're mostly okay with how things went down. Who has time to worry about dogs when Brienne is pledging half of Ned Starks sword to his daughter Sansa's service? Or Ghost is howling at Castle Black? Or while we're witnessing the craziest disrobing scene in GoT history?

12/06/1554m 2s

509 - The Dance of Dragons

A few days of reflection and a few more rewatches have not been any kinder to our memories of episode 509, entitled "The Dance of Dragons"... Arya's subplot was uncharacteristically flat and obvious, Stannis is no longer the Mannis, things in Meereen were thrilling and epic but suffered from a bit of execution (too soon?) problems, and Dorne... well, it's Dorne, which is an old Valyrian word for "crap". Hopefully next week we'll get a ray of sunshine as we finish of the series. Perhaps somebody will order a Code Red on Ramsay and his A Few Good Men? Or maybe Dany and Drogon will ride back in town, free the other two dragons, and Tyrion and a suddenly awesome Daario can take the skies together in a magical hour of fun and friendship! Either that, or characters we know and love will be brutalized before our eyes as we take emotional kick after emotional kick straight to the emotional crotch. Please sirs, can we have another?! Check back Friday for our SpoiLORE cast, were A.Ron will be moderating a debate consisting of "Stannis; the Monster that Betrayed Us All" versus "Stannis; We Probably Should Have Seen This Coming All Along".

There is a lot to like about this episode; some real movement with Arya's plot that inspires a bit of awe and dread, some great quiet moments with Tyrion and Jorah, and some interesting moments of ham fisted court intrigue courtesy one Cersei Lannister. And then there's everything about Dorne. And, you know, Sansa. Hopefully, we, the show, and Sansa will all bounce back next week. New Game of Thrones podcast!

Hey there!  A.Ron here.  I bet you're wondering, "Where's the Night's Watch?"  Well, I have good news, and bad news.  The bad news is that the Night's Watch is kaput, dead, donezo.  The good news is that Jim, who you may know as my co-host for Breaking Good, Watching Dead, Mad Men, etc will be joining me for a new Game of Thrones podcast on Bald Move!  Jim is a book virgin, so I'll be keeping the format largely the same.  While we will remain a show-first podcast, we will still be talking about book spoilers and popular book theories in our spoiler section after our show music is over.
