Sean Allen

In this episode of What I'm Working On, I discuss how the launch of my latest course, "Dub Dub Grub" went and how that led to me being burnt out. I also discuss what I'm going to focus on for the rest of 2021 with CreatorView and how that wasn't an easy decision even though it's REALLY what I want to do. I give my thoughts on WWDC 2021 among many other topics.

Chris ended up getting this job and we did further podcast episodes discussing his first 30 days on the job. Now we're checking in with Chris after a year and a half to see how it's been going.

Programmer Slang - 8 Common Terms Explained

In this show I discuss how I commonly use Twitter to find and hire developers and designers for small startups or independent contracting/freelancing projects. The tips in this episode are not universal job searching advice. This is coming from the lens of when there is a single person (not an HR department) doing to hiring, which is often the case at startups. Hope you enjoy!

Swift News Returns - Swift 5.3, macOS SwiftUI, Universal Purchases, GitHub Mobile & More

In this episode I talk about a viral tweet that I posted a few weeks back. I asked developers to share a beginner mistake they had when they FIRST started learning iOS development. I got answers from all kinds of well known developers from major companies. It was a lot of fun to hear that we all start somewhere. My goal for this video was to show beginners that even very senior developers made the same silly beginner mistakes that you are making right now. Again... we all started somewhere. Stick with it.

What I'm Working On - Business, Indie App Dev, Consulting Work, Website (Publish)

My technical skills as a software developer with 5 years experience are average. They're fine. Nothing special, but not bad either. However, I believe I'm a REALLY good overall software developer because of very good soft skills. In this episode I want to discuss that topic for those developers out there who may be self-conscience about their lack (or perceived lack) of technical skills and knowledge. There's a lot more that goes into being a great software developer than just knowing the code.

If you like my teaching style, I've released my first iOS dev course which is all about the take-home project job interview for iOS developers.

Dealing with Burnout as a Software Developer

Last year I hired a Jr. iOS Developer as my replacement at a startup I was working at. I had the opportunity to review over 100 submissions for the position, and I got to see first hand how the vast majority of developers REALLY need some help when it comes to marketing themselves. Better Github repositories, resumes, websites, portfolios, app marketing pages, etc... It all needs works. In this video I discuss some of the thoughts after going through the process of hiring an iOS developer.

5 Mistakes Most Remote Developers Make

In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Javi Soto, iOS Engineer at Twitch. We get to hear how Javi got started at a young age writing HTML and then eventually PHP as well as how the experience of getting CS degree just wasn't for him and why he decided to drop out (hint: already having a developer job helps). Javi also tells the story of how iOS came into his life with the launch of the iPhone in 2007 which eventually led him to start developing for the platform resulting in him making the journey from Spain to Silicon Valley. Javi also gives some great interview tips in this episode. Hope you enjoy!

This is the audio from a recent video I did about 37 Tips for Software Developers. This might by my favorite video that I've ever done. I think there is a TON of great value in there. This video was sponsored by Squarespace, so I apologize for the ads in there. They were integrated into the video, so it's tough edit them out.

My App Update - Why I'm Skipping High Fidelity Designs

In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Kim Arnett, iOS developer at Expedia. We get to hear how Kim got her start as well as some insights on changing jobs roughly every two years and how that's pretty common in the tech space. What's especially interesting about Kim is that she is the host of her local meetup and we have a great discussion on the pros and cons of starting your own meetup when the current meetups you want aren't up to par, or flat out don't exist. I hope you enjoy!
Origin Stories is a series of interviews with iOS developers from the community where we discuss how they got their start in this industry. We discuss how they first became interested in code, what resources they used to learn, how they got their first job and much more.

Swift News - September 16th, 2019

In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Freddie Ohen, iOS developer at Scribd. We get to hear how he got his start by taking the free Harvard online CS course, which led him down the path of a developer bootcamp. After the bootcamp he struggled about a year before he found his first iOS developer job. It's a great story and illustrates the power of sticking with it and completely immersing yourself in development to get that job. Hope you enjoy!

Swift News - September 2nd, 2019

In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Zack Falgout, iOS developer and co-host of the Fireside Swift podcast. We get to hear how he "took the long road" to iOS development. By that he means he started off on a completely different career path and then switched to software development later in life. Those types of stories are always near and dear to my heart. We also get a BONUS origin story by hearing about the inception of the Fireside Swift podcast. Hope you enjoy!
Origin Stories is a series of interviews with iOS developers from the community where we discuss how they got their start in this industry. We discuss how they first became interested in code, what resources they used to learn, how they got their first job and much more.

Swift News - August 26th, 2019

This episode is the audio from a Twitch stream I did where I review'd Hired's State of Salaries Report - 2019. We discuss various software developer salaries and rates from all over the world. The chat and I have a great discussion about cost of living, better places to network, taking less pay to get started, and much more! If you're curious about how much software developers make, I think you'll enjoy this.

Hired's State of Salaries Report 2019 Review

In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Kristina Fox, Staff iOS Engineer at Intuit. I had the pleasure of meeting Kristina during all the WWDC festivities so I'm excited to have her on the show. We get to hear how she got her start as a child by editing the HTML of Neopets pages, how she chose to study computer science in college and her internship experience. Now that Kristina is the one conducting the interviews, we also get some great advice for intern and jr. iOS developer interviews.  Kristina is also an international speaker, so there's a bonus origin story on how she got started speaking. Hope you enjoy!

Swift News - August 12th, 2019

In this vlog I talk about life as an independent iOS developer. Today I'm talking about the reasons why I moved away from San Francisco and Silicon Valley as an iOS Developer to pursue building my own business as a full-time content creator. I talk about needed more space for a dedicated studio as well as some personal reasons for wanting to be back on the east coast.
I love San Francisco and intend on visiting at least once a year for WWDC.

Swift News - July 22nd, 2019

In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with long-time community member and fellow iOS Engineer, Chris Conner. Chris has a very unique origin story since he transitioned from a Product Manager to an iOS Engineer, not only at the same company, but on the same team as well. I wanted to have Chris on the show to share his story to maybe give some inspiration to those out there that are in one position at a company, but really want to become an iOS Engineer. Hope you enjoy!
Origin Stories is a series of interviews with iOS developers from the community where we discuss how they got their start in this industry. We discuss how they first became interested in code, what resources they used to learn, how they got their first job and much more.

Swift News - July 15th, 2019

In this episode I give a preview of my book, It's Only Crazy Until You Do It: How I Became an iOS Developer by reading the Intro and Chapter 1. This book was the inspiration for the podcast show Origin Stories. After writing this book, I thought it would be awesome to hear other people's stories as well, and the podcast was born. My hope for this book is that it will inspire and give you insights for your journey to become an iOS Developer. If you're interested in the rest of the book, check out the link below:

We get to hear how she first got exposed to basic code while playing with Neopets while in middle school and how she decided to pursue a CS degree while in college. This led to internships which then led to her first job, and then ultimately to a job a Patreon. We also get to hear her reasoning for starting a YouTube channel and her advice for getting started with content creation in the space. Stay tuned for a bonus section at the end about her new venture into the super fun world of Twitch streaming.
