SIM Ep 181 IMD 5: Luke Hart on domestic violence and changing the narrative

By Standard Issue

This week we’re doing things a bit differently. We’re always wanging on about how gender inequality is a ballbag for everyone – because it is. And so, around International Men’s Day on November 19, we decided to do a series of interviews where we chatted to blokes about what’s going on with the dudes. In this episode, Mickey has a frank and frankly heartbreaking conversation with Luke Hart about how language around domestic violence and coercive control needs to change. Luke is a domestic violence campaigner and co-author, alongside his brother Ryan, of Operation Lighthouse, which tells the story around how his mum Claire and sister Charlotte were murdered by his father. The National Domestic Violence Freephone Helpline is 0808 2000 247. In our other #IMD interviews, Mickey chats with author and mental health advocate Matt Haig about brain diahorrea, Hannah talks booze culture and growing up the child of an alcoholic with Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth, Jen chats how sport can help kids in comminties affected by crime and violence with Fight For Peace's Dr Jacob Whittingham Vigors, and also talks to writer, performer and campaigner Jordan Stephens about toxic masculinity.
