Best Picture Picks Revisited - For Your Consideration
On this week’s For Your Consideration, Collider’s awards experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider examine where the Best Picture race stands heading into 2019. The Oscar nominations will be announced in mid-January, after the Golden Globe statues have already been handed out, so which films are poised to make the cut, and more importantly, which movies actually have a chance to win? Scott still thinks that First Man has a shot at a nomination, but Jeff thinks that the film is DOA as far as Best Picture goes, though it could certainly fare well with below-the-line nominations such as cinematography and original score. Perri feels like Vice and The Favourite are coming on strong, and everyone agrees that both are likely to be nominated. The same goes for BlacKkKlansman and Black Panther, though the FYC hosts feel that only the latter film should be considered a major threat for Best Picture. One big question is whether Bohemian Rhapsody can sneak into the field over If Beale Street Could Talk, given its astounding success at the box office. And will the Academy's perceived Netflix stigma hurt Roma, or was the film always destined to be relegated to the foreign language category?
