We speak on the topic of who dictates the beauty standard for women. At the shades of beauty event the lads went to, a sweeping statement was made; ‘men dictate the beauty standards of women!’ The quadruple do a deep dive into it, from hair, to skin complexion.
Complexion and Colourism is a big thing amongst the black community. Colourism was enforced by whites during slavery, however, do we reinforce it? We recently saw some people go at Krept due to him having a mixed raced girlfriend, however, it was black people not white. So we got the girls to help explain some of their struggles as it seems ‘light-skinned’ people are frowned upon or are seen as the sell-out route for black men. Can a man be with any woman he pleases without ‘selling out’ or doing what ‘society’ tells him to? Is it not possible to have a preference without being viewed as a ‘hater’ of yourself?
It's also interesting that it's rarely viewed this way by men. Its seldom you see men saying ‘you don’t like dark skinned men’ when they see a dark-skinned woman with a ‘light-skinned’ counterpart.
Colourism is real but who is perpetuating now? If a black man has a white woman he has done something wrong? if he has a light-skinned woman, he doesn’t love himself? Is it all too much now?
