Ep 253: Understand Racism in British Sport and Beyond with Derek A Bardowell

By Badass Women’s Hour

“For anyone who is black and trying to cope with life in this country, It’s incredibly tiring!”

Derek A Bardowell joins Harriet, Natalie and Emma in the studio to talk about his new book No Win Race.

Derek places a spotlight on racism in British sport, looking at why we are seeing a lot of black players but very few in higher and managerial positions.

He shares his experience of being a black person growing up in modern Britain, and how looking through the lens of sport in this country we can see the bigger picture of the racism that is still a pervading issue.

Derek tells the Ladies that we need to be recognising the "dual identity" of England and that this is how it achieves it's success’s not just in football but in all aspects of power in this country.

They also discuss how do we change boardrooms and other rooms of power to be more diverse, rather than having decisions made by people who are not living and have never experienced the issues that need addressing. “We need someone who lives and breathes it who is making those key decisions.”

Dereks book No Win Race A Story of Belonging, Britishness and Sport is out now.
