Ep 282: Forward Thinking Football with Eniola Aluko and Lucy Clark

By Badass Women’s Hour

As Emma and Nat take a brake over the summer Harriets co-pilots this week are Amanda Prowse and Scarlette Douglas.

Ex England lioness player Eniola Aluko is in the studio talking about growing up in the UK after moving from Nigeria at the age of one, how she longed to fit in as a child and the role that football played in this.

Eniola’s new book They Don’t Teach This is out now and as we hear it is. An autobiographical novel in which she shares what she has learnt in life this far, from playing for England, to being a lawyer to finding the bravery to blow the whistle on racism within women football which caused her to loose her England career.

She explains how the wise words of her mother steered her towards self validation, and standing up for her background and she says this is something she wants to pass this onto a younger generation of girls through her book. To embrace failure and use the energy you get from it to inspire you to get better for your next venture.

And Harriet and the ladies are also joined by Lucy Clark the UK’s first transgender referee. She is talking about the experience of going back to work on the pitch with a new lease of life and everything in-between.

She shares her life in football before transitioning, admitting she put it off for years with the concern of other people in her life at the forefront of her actions. Lucy says that Football saved her life by giving her something to focus on when he was younger.

She also talks about starring in new film “Fanatical” which is trying to answer the question; Can you be a “Geezer or a real man” without liking football.
