The Blizzard: Aberdeen 3-2 Bayern Munich, 1983

On today’s Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by author and Sunday Times’ Chief Football Writer Jonathan Northcroft! He joins us to talk about “the greatest experience he’s ever had watching football”.

After winning the Scottish Cup the previous season Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen side swept through the early rounds - conceding only one goal - and then drew the first leg of this quarter-final 0-0 in Munich, which was a success in itself. Ferguson then deployed some fantastic ruses to ensure the German side and travelling press pack underestimated Aberdeen, including a chaotic training session involving wayward passes hitting teammates in the head! But what followed was one of the most glorious ninety minutes of football The Dons’ fans will ever see. Jonathan talks through what it was like watching the game on the terraces as Aberdeen executed Ferguson’s tactics perfectly, and knocked out one of European football’s aristocrats.
