Ep 321: Rebel With Joy with Chidera Eggerue and Emily Aboud

Ep 321: Rebel With Joy with Chidera Eggerue and Emily Aboud

By Badass Women’s Hour

Harriet, Emma and Natalie are joined by Chidera Eggerue AKA “The Slumflower”, the mind that brought us “Saggy Boobs Matter”.

Chidera is talking about her latest book “How To Get Over A Boy” which looks at the idea of romance vs love and the idea of love and relationships we are shown in the media especially in the 90’s era of rom-coms and chick-flicks. Chidera explains what the real “P-word” is and why women seem to accept less than they deserve and compromise within relationships more than a man.

And together the ladies look at our own biases with our Body hair, why women feel the need to remove body hair and where this phenomena came from. Look out for Chidera’s documentary “Bring back the bush: where did our pubic hair go?” on Channel 4.

The second badass guest this week is Emily Aboud who has created the play “Splintered” which is based on conversations with women from Trinidad, telling the stories of growing up queer in the Caribbean. The play takes the form of a cabaret aiming to “educate the oppressed about being oppressed”.

Emily explains that the Caribbean in it’s history has been a difficult place for queer people and only had it’s first pride festival in 2018, the ladies discuss where this homophobia came from and Emily looks at how colonialism had an impact.

Splintered will be on at the The Vault festival and you can find out more information here.
