Today I have not one but two urology consultants on the podcast! Dr Nish Bedi, who some of you may remember from the podcast we recorded a couple of years ago titled “eat for your bladder” and Dr Matthew Bultitude, a surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital in London.

Today we’re talking all things kidney stones, a topic requested by a number of followers and colleagues who asked for advice on this via social media and my newsletter.

We’ll talk about:

What types of stones are there

The impact of hydration, sugar, animal protein, salt and fibre on stones

How do we prevent them

What things should one include or exclude depending on their condition

Supplements for stones

Acidification and Alkalinisation of the urine and what this means clinically

This is a fascinating discussion and on that you can also watch on YouTube on the doctor’s kitchen channel. Please do share this information widely as I’m sure it will be absolutely helpful and game changing for many people out there, especially considering the 10% of the population will suffer with a kidney stone.

Matthew Bultitude is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital in London. He is a general urologist and has a specialist interest in kidney stone disease. He has an interest in metabolic stones and in particular a rare condition called cystinuria which predisposes to lifelong kidney stones. He runs a rare disease website for patients with this condition - www.cystinuriaUK.co.uk. At Guy’s he has been clinical lead for his department and is currently the Clinical Director for transplantation, nephrology and urology.

Dr Nish Bedi is a consultant urologist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and is passionate about bringing more specific dietary and lifestyle advice for some urological conditions. He is extensively published and regularly speaks at international conferences.
