Cat Sims (Not So Smug Now) on sobriety in motherhood

By Zoe Blaskey

Cat Sims, author of the best-selling book The First Time You Smiled (or was it just wind?) and who you might know from the parenting blog she founded Not So Smug Now and podcast of the same name joins me on this week’s episode. How do you feel about your relationship with alcohol? That is a big question in our society. It is everywhere and so ingrained in how we live. Drinking has been normalised, especially in Motherhood. Cat is a year sober now, which I’m curious about as I am 10 years sober. We both have a shared love of the 12-steps which is a recovery process used in Alcoholics Anonymous and also Al-Anon which is the 12-step group I have been in for over 15 years now. We chat about her journey to sobriety. How she went from denying there was a problem to proudly calling herself an alcoholic without shame. She shares the moment she knew she had to get help and how it felt being newly sober when the world around her was still drinking. I hope however you feel about your drinking you’ll take something from this very beautiful and honest conversation. My sponsor this week is Athletic Greens. Visit https://athleticgreens.com/motherkind to get a FREE year supply of immune-supporting Vitamin D AND 5 free travel packs with your first purchase. I love AG1. I take it every morning when I’m making the girls breakfast. AG1 has over 7k 5* reviews and I can see why. It’s a supplement with 75 ingredients and its special blend is designed to support gut health, nervous and immune system, energy, recovery, focus and even aging. It’s one of my non-negotiables. It tastes quite nice and while I’m drinking it I’m reminding myself I’m worth looking after and that I can only be the mother and person I want to be in the world when I look after myself.
