Outsmarting Addiction: Rethinking Your Relationship with Alcohol with Patrick Fox

Join Dan in this episode as he talks to Patrick Fox, a life coach who helps men rethink their relationship with alcohol. They dive into the common misconceptions about drinking, how our minds can trick us into desiring alcohol, and tools to change our thinking and break free from dependency. Patrick shares his own journey to sobriety after one wild December made him realise he needed to stop. He provides insight into dealing with social pressures, overcoming triggers, and cultivating self-belief.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Our brains can become dependent on alcohol by associating it with dopamine rewards from evolution. We then crave it despite the downsides. Write down your reasons for drinking and quitting to expose unhelpful beliefs and create a plan. Focus on what you gain rather than lose from sobriety - freedom, presence, improved relationships. Create "sober firsts" - activities/events tackled without alcohol - to build confidence and new neural pathways. Don't assume others are judging you for not drinking. Often, we project our own insecurities. Patience, planning and practice are key to overcoming urges and sticking to sobriety long-term. Talk to yourself during triggers: "It's just a thought, it will pass." Don't let it dictate your actions. Build willpower by doing hard things like cold plunges. It strengthens your ability to resist temptation.   BEST MOMENTS  "I woke up, I feel absolutely terrible, I’m just so sick of this stuff, man. I’m absolutely done with it." "Tomorrow has not happened. Like, you know, why not go create something different for yourself?" "People don't really care about you. Like they might say something, but they're not going to go home and be thinking about you all night." "Every time you're not drinking, like that’s the unlearning process taking place." "Just because the thought and the feeling is there, it doesn’t have to be acted on. It’s not real." Relapse Is Part Of My Recovery, I'll Never Stop Fighting with Howa

Dan is joined by Howa, a brave woman who shares her harrowing life story involving childhood sexual abuse, mental health struggles, and a battle with addiction spanning over 20 years. Despite multiple suicide attempts and ongoing relapses, Howa remains determined to beat her demons through creative outlets like writing poetry and pursuing a degree in forensic psychology. This raw, emotional episode provides insight into addiction's roots and the failings of the mental health system, while offering hope to those fighting similar battles that recovery is possible if they stay vocal and keep fighting. KEY TAKEAWAYS Childhood trauma like abuse can lead to escapism through addiction later in life. Speaking out early is key. The link between addiction and mental health issues is strong but not well addressed by the current system. Relapse is part of recovery - staying determined and vocal is vital. There is hope. Creativity like writing is an outlet that helps process and share your pain. Educating kids on addiction early could help them avoid future substance abuse. Building a support network and routine helps manage addiction and mental health. Rehab is inaccessible for many - more community services are needed. Past suffering makes you want to stop others from going through the same pain. BEST MOMENTS  "I picked up my first drink at 13. I've literally never been a sophisticated drinker, I fucking hate the taste of drink." "I can remember one instance with my ex-partner, he overdosed on tramadol in my arms. He went into a coma for 10 days." "I feel like I'm trapped and here come the suicide thoughts, because through all of the madness you thought I would have self-taught." "When I make it to 40, it's very hard to see, addiction is ugly and spreads like a disease." "Oh, wow. Wow. Powerful stuff, man. You are, man. You are a, you're a woman of my own heart." "Past suffering makes you want to stop others going through the same pain." One Year Sober: The Hardest and Best Year of My Life

Dan O'Reilly celebrates an incredible milestone - one year sober! In this raw and emotional episode, Dan reflects on the highs and lows of his journey with producer John. They have an honest heart-to-heart, with Dan opening up about his addictions, sobriety struggles, and the taboos around addiction. John asks thoughtful questions to uncover Dan's authentic thoughts and we learn how Dan has found himself, saved his marriage, and reconnected with his purpose. An inspiring episode proving it's never too late to change, with vital advice for anyone considering sobriety. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sobriety gave Dan serenity - for the first time he can relax and be present with his family. He couldn't stand being alone with his thoughts before. Dan used to think "finding himself" was nonsense, now he realises he was truly lost and sobriety helped him reconnect with his true self. Dan urges people to wake up and admit they have a problem if drinking/drugs are ruining their life. The first step is accepting you're an addict. There's a taboo around sobriety for "lads" - Dan wants men to know it's ok to say drinking doesn't serve you anymore without shame. Dan's advice is: if drink/drugs cause chaos in your life but you continue using, you have a problem and it's insanity to keep going. Sobriety gets better and better - push through the hard early days. Dan hated it at first, now he loves the personal growth. Sharing stories helps sobriety. Dan found support and tools from interviewing people, helping him manage unhealthy thoughts. Dan wants to break taboos so people ask for help sooner, instead of being labelled an "addict" when it's very late. BEST MOMENTS  "I'd fucking love to get fucked up. I'd love to sniff a bag of gear. If I'm going to do that, I'm going to get annihilated, right? I'm getting fucked up for one night only." "Just wake up, man. Wake up. You've got a fucking problem. And congratulations, because you're about to start a brand new life and it's fucking amazing." "I can see like the effect that my addictions and how I was has had an effect on the mood of the house and Shelly." "You shouldn't feel that you deserve cocaine or drugs... Cocaine and excess alcohol does nothing but fuck your mental health up, horrifically." "I realised that the taboo with sobriety is like, if you're a lad's lad and your whole existence was around socializing with your friends." "This podcast has inspired me to do this, or like, yeah. I mean, that, that's an amazing thing, like you don't, you don't feel it necessarily because it's almost like digital numbers." Dan Does the Impulsivity Test with the Cocaine Hypnotist

Dan hands the reins over to addiction specialist Elliot Wald in this episode. They delve into the changes in Dan's social circle, his mental resilience strategies like boxing, and how Dan's trust had to be rebuilt with his wife Shelley. Elliot administers an impulsivity test to Dan, scoring him at a sky-high 92! They also discuss why addiction is a form of "escapism," the importance of remembering your worst moments, and how to view compulsion versus repulsion. KEY TAKEAWAYS At 303 days sober, Dan has had to stop spending time with a lot of his older friends, focusing just on his wife Shelley and kids. Dan finds boxing and cold water dips build mental resilience against addiction's "impulsivity." To rebuild broken trust, Dan advises addicts to tell spouses: "I want to help to battle this." It took his wife 6-7 months to begin to trust him again. Remembering your worst moments via photos/videos creates a "repulsion" against the "compulsion" to use again. Dan needs affirmations, like follower comments, to stay motivated, but tries to avoid self-absorption. His life can’t only be about him. Group meetings offer accountability and realisation: "I'm not that different" from other addicts. Dan dismisses cruel trolls, focusing instead on helping others, which gives him more satisfaction than when he was a household name on TV. BEST MOMENTS  "When you add a fucking massive mortgage and kids into the mix...you will find out very quickly whether you're an addict or not." "I feel like I've got a sense of imposter syndrome...I'm waiting for impending doom." "If once you pop, you can't stop...you've got a problem, whether it's once a year or every day." "Life's good now. Why do I want to escape?...To get rid of your problem, you've got to stop wanting to escape." Me and My Addiction with Author Stewart Lee

Dan chats with Stewart Lee, author of "Me and My Addiction," about his journey with alcoholism and sobriety. Stewart shares his relatable story, from trying to fit in as an awkward teenager to hitting rock bottom and attempting suicide. He discusses getting and staying sober, including stints in rehab, relapsing at big life events, and finally committing to recovery. Stuart offers insights into addiction psychology and talks about finding purpose through new hobbies like boxing and dance. This raw, honest interview provides many teachable moments about addiction that will resonate with those struggling with their own addiction or that of a loved one. KEY TAKEAWAYS Addiction manifests in teenagers trying to fit in, using substances to find confidence and escape anxiety. The desire can start very young. Hitting rock bottom, like a suicide attempt or threat of violence, may motivate you to get sober but isn't a cure-all. Relapse is common. Major life events like having a baby are often excuses to drink, not opportunities for sobriety. Addiction distorts priorities. Getting sober requires finding new challenges and purposes in life to obsess over, not just avoiding substances. Sobriety gives you priceless memories and relationships that active addiction robs you of. The first thought that comes to an addict’s mind when using is often how to keep using, not regret. People who use moderately can still have unhealthy relationships with substances without realising it BEST MOMENTS  "I woke up and my first thought was 'Oh shit, I haven't succeeded,' when I survived my suicide attempt." "I hoped my newborn daughter would stay in the hospital overnight so I could keep drinking and 'wet the baby's head.'" "Doing a dance competition in front of 400 people was scarier than boxing." "The best highs require the most effort, which is why relapse is so tempting." "Sobriety gives you priceless memories and relationships that money can't buy." "When the addiction takes hold, all I think about is how to keep drinking, not what I'm missing." Sober trainer Adam 'Lubbs' Lubbock fights Industry Silence!

Dan chats with personal trainer Adam 'Lubbs' Lubbock about taking a stand against the fitness industry's silence on alcohol. Adam shares why he feels compelled to speak out, even if it means losing clients and followers. He provides insight into sobriety, discipline and the connections between mental and physical health. Listen as Adam inspires people in the fitness realm and beyond to have the courage to address society's unhealthy relationship with alcohol and prioritise true well-being, from physical health to mental strength. KEY TAKEAWAYS The fitness industry stays silent on alcohol to retain popularity and relatability, despite the harm this causes. True health/fitness ambassadors must speak out. Sobriety requires internal discipline fuelled by self-respect. It translates to success in other areas like fitness. Helping people grapple with sobriety issues has an immeasurable positive impact. Silence perpetuates harm. Alcohol numbs pain rather than addressing root causes. Sobriety brings clarity to elevate health and happiness. The fitness industry should promote sobriety as foundational to well-being, not enable unhealthy drinking habits. BEST MOMENTS  "I have such a moral obligation and responsibility to the world to just do what I can to even up a little bit because, you know, we don't have too many things on our job description list as a personal trainer." "How you do anything is how you do everything right? I promise I didn't read a book of quotes on the way." "When you stop drinking, one of the things I noticed quite quickly was I gained an almost obnoxious level of self-respect." "Discipline is hard but it's fucking way easier than being ill-disciplined. That's really hard." "If your discipline goes from going, 'Oh, I'll have a few drinks,' then that discipline is gone to eating, sniffing a bag of gear, cheating, fucking whatever." From Prison to Life Coach with Lewis Raymond Taylor

Dan chats with inspirational speaker Lewis Raymond Taylor, who shares his unbelievable story of transforming from a violent criminal and diagnosed psychopath to a successful entrepreneur and life coach. They dive into Lewis' traumatic childhood, descent into alcoholism and addiction, multiple stints in jail, and eventual road to recovery. Lewis explains how rehab and self-development changed his life trajectory, leading him to build a massively successful coaching business. He offers honest insights into living with psychopathic traits and provides hope for anyone seeking major life changes. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lewis endured childhood trauma like an alcoholic father and sexual abuse, leading to violent outbursts and addictions. Jail time only worsened his mental state. A singular traumatic rejection triggered Lewis' shocking suicide attempt, slitting his own throat. He constantly sought attention and significance through violence. In rehab, Lewis realised he was the root of his problems and needed to change. He became "addicted" to personal growth and helping others change their lives. Lewis leveraged his troubled history and rehab learnings to quickly build a multi-million-dollar coaching business, The Coaching Masters. He admits to still having psychopathic traits but channels them productively into business strategy, detached from destructive emotions. Voids like lack of parental love drove Lewis' harmful addictions. Constructively filling voids with service led him to significance and success. Despite immense childhood setbacks, Lewis' story proves with self-awareness anyone can transform their trajectory at any time. BEST MOMENTS  "I started punching myself in the head as hard as I could because I was so angry at myself for being this bad kid." "When I hit him, he hit his head on the ground, and I looked over him, and there was this slow, dark trickle of blood coming out of his head, and I thought, I'd killed him." "Your best thinking, your absolute best thinking, has put you into prison, and now into rehab. Maybe your brain needs a good wash." "The moment I realised that was the problem, I was like, fuck, I'm also the solution." "If you can change your mind...you spiral into control. And that's not an expression you hear often. My life spiralled into control." The Real Danger of the Come Down: Suicide by Addiction and the Role of Cocaethylene with Nicola Abraham

This episode will challenge the way many of us think about drink, cocaine and the comedown. Dan is joined by Nicola Abraham to talk all about Cocaethylene and its role in suicide. They discuss the rise in male suicide, the lack of knowledge about this side effect of using and Nicola’s own tragic story. Nicola also talks about what she wants to achieve now she knows better and discusses the many barriers the foundation is trying to break down and the current help out there. Now Dan has learnt about this cause, he wants to help raise awareness by any means necessary, so watch this space. KEY TAKEAWAYS  Cocaethylene Is a substance that is created once you’ve taken alcohol and cocaine. It creates a chemical substance that can cause psychotic symptoms. Cocaethylene impacts the neurological and metabolic systems so much it puts them into overdrive and the side effects of this are often aggression, severe agitation and unexplained physical strength as well as things such as heart attacks and depression. Some of Dan’s biggest issues, when he was using, were actually related to his comedown and the symptoms he would have. Nicola’s son was a happy man, with no mental illness or difficulties anyone around him was aware of. After her son’s death, Nicola realised he was using cocaine and the true extent of the depression he felt after using became apparent. Nicola found other parents who had children die in similar circumstances and they created an alliance and campaigned to public care in Wales to take notice of what had been happening. The situation Nicola’s son and other men have found themselves in, is very different to other mindsets individuals may be in before suicide, it needs a unique approach. One of the saddest facts Nicola and fellow loved ones have to deal with is the fact that if their boys had just gone through that comedown, that one day, they’d still be here with them. Nicola and the group want to set up a helpline, to be the support for people who are struggling with the come down after taking drugs or/and drinking alcohol. When you first start using drugs and alcohol you get the full effects of dopamine and serotonin rises, the ‘fun’, but as you use more, chemically things change.   BEST MOMENTS  "When you take alcohol and cocaine it puts the neurological and metabolical system into supercharge and creates this excited delirium ‘It’s completely preventable’ ‘When you lose someone by suicide the thing that goes through your mind most is why’ ‘There’s a rise in suicide in men in this age group and this was a connection’ ‘You don’t have any control over this, this could happen to you’ ‘If these boys could have got through that day, they’d still be with us’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.facebook.com/groups/menandtheiremotions/ CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE HOSTS Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Why I Wanted to End My Life with John Connelly

Content Warning: Suicide In this episode, Dan wants to talk about a topic that is frequently intertwined with addiction, so much so that he sees it consistently in his mental health group and receives DMs about it daily: suicide in men. He is joined by John Connelly who talks about his own experience of almost taking his own life, what led him to that decision and what they both agree needs to change. KEY TAKEAWAYS On the outside everything appeared normal about John’s life. He had a loving family, a good childhood and a stable home life but he felt numb most of the time. Men need to be given knowledge and education on the reality of life and what depression and other mental struggles can feel like. If we can teach people, men especially, to speak up when they are struggling with their mental health it would save a lot of lives. There is immense pressure on men by society to be ‘strong’ and alongside that many men feel they can’t be open about when they are feeling down or lost. If you struggle with addiction or mental health difficulties, it can only take a couple of life events to push you to the edge. If you can recognise when you are vulnerable you can get support and/or look to protect yourself. John recognises that if he had reached out before the death of his grandad, he would have had support in place to stop him from going further into the depths of depression. The difficulties John has been through he is now grateful for, he is now using his journey to help others. BEST MOMENTS  "I was gonna do it, I was gonna end my life” “I have always been a very insecure, self-conscious, shy person” “We need to speak about it more, we need to educate more” “I’m so thankful that these things have happened to me, I now understand so much more” "Everything that's led to now that's just made you who you are today" VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.facebook.com/groups/menandtheiremotions/ CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE HOSTS Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. If You Want to Know Why You’re Using Drugs, Stop Using Drugs with Ex-Addict and Founder of ADAPT Eddie Cob

Kirk and Dan are joined by Eddie Cob, founder of ADAPT a charity which helps addicts seek recovery from addiction free of charge. Eddie started using drugs at a young age and shares in this episode her own experiences of addiction, recovery and life after drug addiction including life with her heroin-addicted partner. Eddie, Kurt and Dan explore the reasons behind addiction including the inability to deal with emotions, and feelings of shame but why ultimately it is always very complicated and difficult to understand addiction, regardless of who you are, where you’re from and what you’re addicted to. KEY TAKEAWAYS Eddie founded ADAPT in 2019, firstly as a single dry house, ADAPT now has 10 dry houses. Recovering addicts often crave structure and so this is something Eddie incorporated into the houses including counselling sessions. Eddie’s support and help come from a unique place of having experienced drug addiction, she has a perspective many professionals in the space do not have. Eddie suffered from overeating as a child and teen which she now recognises as a coping mechanism and is still something she struggles with. There were a lot of feelings of shame in this for her which were further exacerbated when she was bullied badly at school. At 15 she started taking cocaine to fit in and her drug use accelerated quickly, especially when she realised it was making her lose weight. After travelling, Eddie was taking Valium and drinking a litre of vodka a day, she managed to wean herself off both of these before entering her first drug treatment centre. Addicts need love through their addiction, you can still have good boundaries with friends who are addicted whilst letting them know you are there for them. When you have been addicted you get so used to feeling numb, as soon as you’re sober you feel all your emotions at once, it can be overwhelming. Eddie got into a relationship with an ex-heroin addict, something she wasn’t aware of until he relapsed which then introduced her to a whole new side of addiction and drug taking. Addiction is about why you use not what you’re addicted to. Eddie felt the shame attached to her partner's addiction, she would do anything to try and defend and protect him. Eddie’s son Jack was born in 2016, her partner had managed to stay clean for 9 months but relapsed on the day their son was born. If you are struggling with a family member’s addiction, putting in small achievable goals or boundaries can be more successful than ultimatums. How Joe Sealey Got Clean

Dan is joined by Joe Sealey, ex-West Ham footballer who is currently starring in the Housewives of Cheshire. Joe is also the son of late Manchester United goalie Les Sealey, Joe lost his father and his football career at the same time which is what led him down the path of addiction. Joe talks to Dan in this episode about the role of his father and football in his life and addiction and how his wife helped him on the road to recovery. Joe opens up about what addiction and sobriety have been like for him including many of his lowest moments, the failure of rehab and what life looks like now he has been sober for many years. Joe also talks about his number 1 bestselling book which is about his addiction, sobriety and also features chapters from his dad’s book project that was started many years before. KEY TAKEAWAYS Identifying himself as his fathers’ son and later as a West Ham player, meant Joe never discovered his own true identity which led to a lot of problems with his self-esteem. Before his dad died and his career ended, Joe had never really drunk alcohol to excess and had never taken drugs, but within 6-8 months he had started taking drugs and drinking. Joe felt like at the start, drugs saved his life, they made him happy, but it quickly escalated to ruining everything for him. Very quickly, Joe escalated from doing drugs socially to isolating himself and doing it alone at home every day. Hyperfocus and drive can help individuals find success, but they are also traits that can easily lead them down the path to addiction. Joe meeting his wife is what saved him and he attributes being her today and staying sober to her love and support. Before realising he had a drug problem Joe thought he had an anger problem, but it was actually the comedowns from drug taking that were making him angry. Rehab didn’t work for Joe; it didn’t prepare him for when he left the centre. Children sense when their parents, or any adult, have been drinking or taking drugs. It’s something both Dan and Joe feel ashamed about now they are sober. Being on Housewives of Cheshire is for fun and promotion for Joe, he doesn’t take it too seriously. Joe’s advice to anyone struggling with addiction is to just get through the day, and then keep getting through each day, try and switch off your thoughts by any means necessary such as going for a walk. BEST MOMENTS  "I did [drugs] it and it made me feel better”] ”Drugs saved my life but by the end it took everything” “What I loved was losing control” “Once I start I can’t stop” “You have to look at the tragedy [of addiction] and laugh at it” “Your brain will kill you if you listen to it” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.cocaineanonymous.org.uk CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE HOSTS Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. The Dreaded Relapse With Dan & Kirk

Dan and Kirk discuss the topic of relapse in the context of sobriety. They share their personal experiences with relapse, highlighting the different ways it can manifest and the challenges it presents. Kirk opens up about his own relapses, detailing the triggers and emotions that led him back to substance use. He reflects on the disappointment and self-blame that accompanied his relapses, as well as the impact they had on his relationships and overall well-being. Kirk and Dan also touch on the importance of support and understanding during the recovery journey, emphasising the need for compassion and self-reflection when addressing relapse. KEY TAKEAWAYS Relapse is a common part of the recovery journey for many individuals struggling with addiction. Relapse can take different forms, from going back to substance use to breaking sobriety commitments. Negative comments and criticism can be triggering and potentially lead to relapse, so it's important to focus on positive support and self-care. Relapse can be a result of feeling overconfident or complacent in one's recovery, leading to a gradual return to addictive behaviours.  Support from loved ones and a strong support system, such as attending meetings or therapy, can be crucial in overcoming a relapse and getting back on track with sobriety. BEST MOMENTS "I'm going to fucking kill myself."  "I just had to do it for my family. Being a better man for everyone." - "I was disheartened with the program of CA because I felt that you let me down."  "I had an endless supply of money in my house… I was going to die." - "I swapped my higher power from God to my father… He's with me every day, helping through my sobriety."  CONTACT US Instagram Facebook ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. What You Need To Change To Live Sober

In this episode of Menace 2 Sobriety, hosts Daniel O'Reilly and Kirk Norcross discuss the importance of recognizing the need for change and taking the first steps towards sobriety. They share personal stories and experiences, including Kirk's hilarious and bizarre encounter with delirium while on drugs. The hosts emphasize the significance of paying attention to signs that indicate a problem, such as changes in behavior and strained relationships. They also touch on the potential dangers of mixing alcohol and drugs, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about the risks. Dan & Kirk also talk about the benefits of reaching out for help and finding support from groups like Cocaine Anonymous.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Recognizing the need for change: It's important to be aware of signs that indicate a need for change, such as changes in behavior, strained relationships, or negative feelings associated with certain habits or actions. Listening to feedback: Pay attention to what friends, family, and partners are saying about your behavior. If multiple people are expressing concern or suggesting that you make a change, it's worth considering their perspective. Taking responsibility: Instead of getting defensive or dismissing concerns, take responsibility for your actions and acknowledge that there may be a problem. This is an important step in initiating change. Seeking support: Reach out for help and support from organizations like Cocaine Anonymous (CA) or other resources that can provide guidance and assistance in making positive changes. BEST MOMENTS "The minute you think, like when is enough enough. The minute you think that, or am I drinking too much or am I doing too much coke, you probably are." "If you're even questioning, people that don't have a drink and drug problem don't wonder if they have a drink or a drug problem." "The minute your normal daily routine starts changing. So the minute you might be either late for work or feeling shit in the morning or arguing with your partner or having a partner for no reason. Just silly things, like not having as many showers or not taking the dogs out like you should. The minute you're changing your life, it's not doing what it was meant to." "If your partner is saying to you, 'Oh man, do you have to go out and you're drinking a little bit too much,' and your response is, 'Fucking hell, just let me enjoy myself. I want to do it,' and your response is a little bit snap backy and you actually can't make that conscious decision to choose not to, you've got to realize that your friends, your partner, and your family, they wouldn't tell you not to do something if it was good for you." What Is Your Rock Bottom?

In this episode, Kirk, Dan and producer John explore the concept of hitting rock bottom, the depth of the human experience, how our mind alters with addiction and the manipulation that comes alongside that. They also again discuss the link between neurodivergence and addiction and what we can do as individuals to combat this and answer more questions about sobriety from the community. KEY TAKEAWAYS Going sober is never easy straight away, it will be harder and not that rewarding, to begin with, but in time things and life will improve. Many people with ADHD self-medicate with alcohol and drugs. Those with ADHD also hyperfocus on things and this can be on things like drugs or simply the feeling they give you. With ADHD you have low dopamine levels which means anything that increases it, feels a lot more intense. If you know you have a problem, the time to go sober is now, there is never a good time to start, apart from now. When going sober, the friends that support you are the people you will want around for the rest of your life. Anyone who isn’t supportive were never your real friends. Drink and drugs numb your emotions and feelings, you have to find ways to live with these feelings and deal with them without having the crutch of drugs and alcohol. You need to build up your mental resilience. Dan enjoys his life now, being sober for him is living a real existence. There are so many people struggling with addiction and mental health, and all Dan and Kirk want to do is support and help as many people as they can. BEST MOMENTS   "Sober you is different to drunk or high you, you’ve got to find you” “Anyone with ADHD, they do get addicted” “You’ve got to start beating that inner bitch in your brain, train your mind to do things that you don’t want to do” “I did this podcast to learn about it [being sober] and now we are doing it because we are enjoying it and in turn, we are helping people” "This may be the most important and worthwhile thing I've done in my life" VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.cocaineanonymous.org.uk CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE HOSTS Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Managing Depression, Anxiety and Addiction Starts with Your Thoughts

Join Kirk and Dan as they talk about the connection between mental health and addiction, the role dopamine plays in how your brain reacts to drink and drugs as well as the stigma many individuals have to face when they have struggles with their mental health, addiction or even with diagnoses such as ADHD and ASD. Dan and Kirk also talk about the shame and mourning they feel for the loss of life to addiction and share many tips and ideas on how to recognise when you have an addiction problem and to start your sober journey. In the second half of the episode, Dan and Kirk tackle questions from the menace to sobriety community including what to replace the sesh with, the role of intimacy in addiction and tips on supporting a friend or family member with addiction too. KEY TAKEAWAYS Those with ADHD are in a dopamine deficit which can predispose them to addiction issues Your dopamine receptors can be altered by addiction, your base line even when not actively drinking or taking drugs is often lower than it should be which can cause anxiety and depression Nerves and excitement aren't the same as anxiety Alcohol is a depressant and has a numbing effect which can be appealing to anyone with neurodiversity or mental health problems Dan doesn’t miss taking cocaine but he does sometimes miss a lot of the effects of alcohol Drinking is a viscous cycle, you are always trying to make yourself feel better when all drinking does is inevitably make you feel worse as it's a depressant  Think about how others close to you see you, this will make you realise what you are doing wrong and can often be the first step to recognising you have an addiction problem Going sober can be frightening, in part because you don’t know what a sober life looks life but don’t be scared of reinventing yourself, embrace it Many people relate to Kirk because of what he has overcome in his life, his mental health struggles and his addiction issues. He is upfront and honest about what he has been through and is an example of what can be achieved Managing your thoughts is an incredibly effective way to manage anxiety and depression but most people aren’t given this information or guided on how they can utilise it You are not your thoughts, you are separate to that. When you can’t separate yourself from your thoughts this is when depression, anxiety and other difficulties can arise There are things you can easily replace drinking and drug taking with including exercise but one of the things you can do most to help you in your sober journey is to learn to combat your intrusive thoughts. Remind yourself what you want from life and why you went sober. The positive feedback and stories Kirk and Dan receive from the community prove that what they are doing is worthwhile, other people can be helped and learn from their difficulties Kirk and Dan will continue to advocate for mens mental health, despite some of the negativity they receive. Men are not weak for having emotions or struggling with their mental health BEST MOMENTS  "I’m definitely addicted to costa coffee” “Drinking alcohol 100% causes mental health problems” “Drink and drugs can form a feeling of bad mental health” “The stuff I miss from drinking is the stuff that damages you” “People who don’t have a problem with drink and drugs don’t wonder if they have a problem” “You do have the ability to not react to what your mind’s telling you” “If I can make one person smile a day and one person not kill themselves a day, that’s it” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.cocaineanonymous.org.uk CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE HOSTS Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Change Your Life and Just Go Sober Already! With NEW Co-Host Kirk Norcross

In this very first episode with Kirk Norcross as co-host, Dan and Kirk begin to explore a new format for the show! Dan and Kirk talk about what you can expect from the show going forward including how their producer John, who has been there for every episode but isn’t an addict, will be getting involved to offer a unique perspective. Menace to Sobriety isn’t just for addicts, but also for those who are around them to learn about what addiction is and how they can potentially help those close to them suffering from addiction. Kirk and Dan also open up about their own addictions including what they think defines a drug and drink problem and why becoming sober is the best thing to happen to them. Answering questions from the community, including whether alcohol advertising should be banned and how to deal with FOMO, this a jam-packed episode full of tips and ideas on how you can start your sobriety journey and remain sober too! KEY TAKEAWAYS  If drugs are in your plan, for a night out or event, this can be a sign that you may have a problem. If it is affecting your life, for example, if you are missing events and not seeing people because of it then that is another sign. Attitude changes and defensiveness are one of the sure ways to recognise addiction in someone close to you. If every time something bad happens, you reach for drink or drugs and it’s your coping mechanism, then you have a problem. Addicts have to be careful, if they have been addicted to one thing they are predisposed to become addicted to other things too. Kirk doesn’t believe you can ever recover from addiction, you can just learn to live with it and do the best you can to stay sober. John likens addiction to possession; like there is yourself and then your addict self that run alongside one another. Addiction usually happens because you are trying to cope with problems. You use drugs as a coping mechanism. You have to face your demons and deal with your real problems to truly combat your addiction. Recognise the little habits that improve your mental health, it can be as simple as making your bed in the morning or writing a gratitude list. Righting wrongs can aid you in your sobriety journey, being honest about who you have hurt and apologising sincerely to them. Exercise is a good routine that can help prevent you from slipping back into addiction, it improves your mood and gives you something to do. Start saying yes and trying things, push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Change your environment, network and circle and you will change yourself. You have to surround yourself with the right people and the right places. Addiction takes pride and ego away, you can find your pride again by doing things like ordering your life and cleaning your home. Swap your addiction to positive things, find something that’s difficult that you want to get good at and swap it for your addiction. If you really want to change your life then go sober!   BEST MOMENTS  "Stop giving in to your inner bitch” “If you feel like you have to use that to have a good night then that’s where your problem lies” “Addicts are born as addicts” “The drink and the drugs aren’t the problem, they’re the solution to your fucking problems, you have to sort your problems” “The only thing you had left was addiction” “Stop using the word I can’t and start using the word yes and I will try” “I don’t think alcohol should be advertised” “Don’t look at it like you're missing out, look at it like you’re free of it” VALUABLE RESOURCES CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE HOSTS Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. When I Want to Get Smashed

Dan shares his personal experience of feeling the urge to get drunk and use drugs, even after months of sobriety. He reflects on a recent event where he was surrounded by people drinking and how it made him question his own sobriety. Daniel discusses the importance of analyzing his thoughts and emotions in real-time to understand the triggers that lead to cravings. He also talks about the impact of being judged and criticized for his sobriety journey. Dan offers advice on managing the mind and finding purpose during the recovery process. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sobriety is a day-to-day journey that requires managing thoughts and emotions in real-time. Understanding the underlying reasons for addiction and cravings can help overcome them. Focusing on the freedom and benefits of sobriety rather than feeling like one is missing out can shift the mindset. Childhood experiences and trauma can contribute to addictive behaviors and the need for escapism. Finding a creative outlet or engaging in a challenging activity can provide purpose and help in recovery. BEST MOMENTS "I want to get fucked up and start acting like a complete knob." "Once you understand this, you can stop yourself from pressing the 'Fuck you' button and going for the drink or the drugs." "You're free from it. You're not missing it." 6 Ways To Change Your Life Now!

This episode is for anyone out there who is ready for a personal revolution and willing to do the hard work in order to change their life and themselves for the better. Join Dan as he explores the 6 ways he has utilised to turn his life around. Dan has just survived the toughest yet most revolutionary 8 months of his life and wants to teach you how to manipulate your mind into not manipulating you and to build a life you want for yourself and those around you. The 6 Ways to Change Your Life: Focus on what you love Be honest about your thoughts Picture who you want to be and who you don’t want to be Control and manage your thoughts Decide when you’re going to change and start it with your routine Focus on the small wins KEY TAKEAWAYS  Coming from a modest upbringing, Dan always felt like he needed to prove himself, which resulted in a work hard play hard mentality. He would reward himself with nights out, alcohol and drugs. What do you love in life and what is truly important to you? That has to be your priority. What are you doing wrong? What are you doing that’s impacting that thing that you love? What are you doing with your time, are you wasting your life with people and things that don’t serve you? Who do you want to be? How we view ourselves in our mind is linked directly to how we treat ourselves too. Whilst working out who you want to be, think about who you don’t want to be and where you never want to end up. This can be a great motivator to change your behaviour. There’s a big taboo surrounding drink and drugs in the showbiz industry, even though it’s part of the culture. Whatever you think becomes reality, so what is in your mind? When are you going to make the changes you need to in your life? If you want to change your life you need to change your routine and plan your route to success. Celebrate your small wins and think about them often to help you feel good along your journey to change. The 6 Ways to Change Your Life Focus on what you love Be honest about your thoughts Picture who you want to be and who you don’t want to be Control and manage your thoughts Decide when you’re going to change and start it with your routine Focus on the small wins BEST MOMENTS  "I could see the future, I could see everything that I really cared about I was going to lose” “I’m super aggressive about personal development” “The fuck you button is the fuck you to yourself” “How we view ourselves is the key to happiness, our self-esteem” “I wanted to be a good father, healthy and a good husband” “You want to be someone who overcame what you’re going through now” “The last person you want to admit is a prick is yourself” “Those little wins will see you through to when the big ones come, as long as you visualise it” VALUABLE RESOURCES CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Story Time: Where did it all go wrong?

Dan is turning 39 and decided he wanted to look back on his life along with his audience and take a look at his relationship with alcohol, to see if he can see where things might have got difficult for him and even see if he can pinpoint some of the causes of his problem drinking. KEY TAKEAWAYS  Dan has always been highly driven especially when it comes to comedy, writing and creating. He also admits to having a big chip on his shoulder which has a wide-reaching impact on how he approaches life. Having a difficult childhood can mean that you spend a lot of your life trying to prove yourself, to yourself and the world around you. It’s easy to blame your parents but they are only human, most people just try their best but will make mistakes along the way. When Dan was young, drinking was a big part of youth culture, there often wasn’t much else to do. This set him up for weekends of drinking for the next 20 years. At 18 Dan moved abroad to be an entertainer it was whilst out here he auditioned to perform on a cruise and this is when he felt his life changed, he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life; entertain people.   BEST MOMENTS    "I’m highly driven” “Having a tough childhood can lead you to spending the rest of your life trying to prove you are enough” “I was a naughty boy growing up” “The weekend signalled for me party time” “All of my wages went on boozing” “You’re gonna lose it all but you’re gonna get it all back” VALUABLE RESOURCES CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter     ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Dapper Reacts to Your Comments and the Future of the Podcast

Dan reacts to the comments made on his recent YouTube videos in this slightly different episode. Dan also takes the opportunity to let you know his future plans for the podcast and how he plans to incorporate more humour and light-heartedness in between the difficult subjects discussed and how he will be asking Kirk Norcross to co-host too! KEY TAKEAWAYS  The comments surrounding how Dan has inspired others to start their sober journey are what drives him to continue to talk openly about his struggles, even though he knows it has cost him work and impacted his career There are many people out there that won’t realise they have an addiction problem, yet it is pulling their life apart. The ying and yang to life means that if you use unnatural substances to feel high, you will feel unnaturally low too. The positive about going through difficult times in life is you then have something to give to other people, to help them, experience Alcohol can often be a problem for those addicted to other substances because it changes your thinking and rationale making you more likely to decide to take other substances after drinking. You can choose to go sober as soon as you realise you may have issues, you don’t have to get to your lowest point or wait for your life to be ruined before making the decision. Dan has some very supportive friends in regards to going sober. Sadly he has lost some friends along the way, When you go sober there is grief, for your old life and for the people you lose too. It’s hard to recover from being a people pleaser but to be happy and at peace you have to realise that you can’t please everyone and not everyone will like you. Dan was going to release some content around Philip Schofield but after seeing Phil’s video about wanting to take his life he rethought the content. You can’t have a large social media following or YouTube channel without having to deal with trolls, it’s something Dan has learnt to accept. Humour is subjective and should always be protected, even if other people take offence.   BEST MOMENTS   "The YouTube channel is immensely interactive” “Now I am out of it the light is back in my life” “There is always sunshine after the rain” “Two stella me isn’t ever going to give me good advice” “You don’t have to wait until your life is ruined to choose sobriety” “Sometimes they talk about you like you’re dead, not that you’re sober” “Trolls are now a part of my job” VALUABLE RESOURCES CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter     ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. When Reality isn’t Good Enough: Performing and Addiction with Magician Magic Mod (Ben Taylor)

Ben Taylor is a magician and has even appeared on Britain's Got Talent and toured with the likes of Paul Weller and The Libertines. He joins Dan to talk about his self-destructive relationship with alcohol and drugs and what lead him to become sober almost a year ago today. Ben and Dan also discuss the relationship between performing and addiction, the unique struggles of the early stages of going sober as well as the clarity and honesty that sobriety brings to your life. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Ben started magic at a young age alongside football. When he stopped playing football he fully put himself into his magic career and also began drinking. Separating his true self, Ben Taylor from his stage self, Magic Mod was difficult, people often didn’t see Ben for his true self and that’s when the drinking started. Performing on stage gives such a high, it can be very difficult to replicate and searching for the feeling often results in alcohol and drug abuse. Touring with rock acts such as the Libertines left Ben feeling like he had a reputation to live up to and his addiction began to spiral. Sobriety brings clarity but this can only come when you are honest with yourself and admit you have a problem. It takes a lot to admit to others and yourself the mistakes you have made when you have been struggling with addiction, but you have to do this to be able to move forward with your life. The beginning of sobriety has its own challenges, physically through chemical imbalances in your brain to the emotions that come with realising the bad things you have done. Ben’s addiction got so bad that his partner told him to choose between alcohol and drugs and her. After this ultimatum and after having a disastrous performance, he made the decision to do the work to become sober.   BEST MOMENTS  “The beginning of sobriety is so hard” “It’s 10% magic and the rest is patter” “No one gave a fuck about who Ben Taylor is, that’s where the addiction started” “By me caring what people thought of me almost fucking ruined me” “It’s like reality wasn’t good enough” “That band, The Libertines giving me that chance and that platform, forever they will be brothers to me” “The maddest thing about sobriety is the clarity you get after” “Mistakes are the only way we learn, try not to harbour that guilt too much”   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/themagicmod https://themagicmod.com/q-and-a/ CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE GUEST     ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. You Can’t Be an Addict in Moderation with William Armstrong

William Armstrong is a sober coach and also someone that Dan first started following and taking inspiration from early on in his journey to sobriety. He joins the podcast to talk through his own journey to sobriety and reveals why being an addict is so dangerous but not for the reasons you might think, why the sobriety community is so important and why it took going sober for him to really start living his life. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Becoming sober opens up a new world, you begin to relate to completely different people and often it’s people who have faced similar difficulties as yourself. As a teen William suffered from social anxiety, binge drinking offered a solution to this and this is when his problem with addiction began. William tried cocaine with friends and discovered that the high it gave was even better than drinking and masked his anxiety even more, he saw it as a positive, it made his life better. The difficulty with trying to limit your consumption as an addict is that you have to make that decision after already consuming some alcohol or drugs which essentially makes it impossible. You can’t be an addict in moderation. As an addict you put yourself in dangerous situations again and again, becoming sober makes you realise how risky your past behaviour has been. William was living in a world of indulgence, where excess was normalised, which meant he didn’t realise how bad his addiction had got. The difficulty for William wasn’t not drinking or doing drugs anymore but what to replace them with. When you hide your struggles it can then be difficult to open up about them to people as they don’t always believe you, they have only seen the face you have been putting on. If you have become sober and want to help others, you can’t tell them what to do, you can only guide them.   BEST MOMENTS  “ When you go on a journey you get drawn to people that are on a similar journey, it helps you” “I can see that you’ve been through something and you’re on the other side” “I was drinking, high or hungover, that’s it” “There’s such a disregard for your own safety” “I know I’m never going to drink again because it’s not an option” “When you hide it, when it becomes too much no one believes you”   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/teetotaltrainer/ https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-teetotal-trail-how-to-break-free-from-alcohol/id1652272264   CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE GUEST William Armstrong   “I stopped drinking back in May of 2018 so coming up to 5 years now. I was working in restaurants, bars and hotels in London through my 20’s and for the final year was working in a private members' bar where I would party every night with the rich and famous. One day after an all night binge on cocaine and tequila I was on my way to spend a relaxing weekend in the countryside with some friends who turned up fresh and I was still high. That weekend opened my eyes to a different way of life and I decided to take a week off. It wasn’t easy but I did it and felt so good I decided to do 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I had a date where I decided to go back to it. The next morning I finally snapped and made the decision that I was done. Since that date I have dedicated my time to understanding and analysing my own behaviour with these substances and also how we use them as a society. I am now a sobriety coach and help others break free like I have in a positive, practical and logical way.”   https://www.instagram.com/teetotaltrainer/ https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-teetotal-trail-how-to-break-free-from-alcohol/id1652272264     ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. No One Chooses Addiction with Scaffolder Harry Tuffs

Dan is joined by scaffolder and ex-addict Harry Tuffs in this episode. Harry made the decision to become sober aged just 22 and talks to Dan about how and why he went into recovery at such a young age, from drinking in the morning at 18 years old to standing at the edge of life and death on a bridge 4 short years later. Dan and Harry talk about the drinking and drug culture young men have to face and the amplification of this found in many trade industries, particularly scaffolding. Harry then goes on to open up about his suicide attempt and is frank about how difficult it was to try and get the help he needed. The guys also discuss the denial there is surrounding alcohol and drug abuse and what it took for them to realise they had a problem as well as why the clarity being sober brings is often the most difficult part of the journey. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Harry’s young heart was broken by Fulham when at the age of 15, after playing for them for 15 years, he was told he was too short. This is when his drinking began. Harry enjoyed the effects of alcohol; it made him feel comfortable. It was after working with older guys that he started sniffing MKAT and along with taking this, his drinking accelerated. Scaffolding and other trades that attract working-class men and are particularly hard work often go hand in hand with drinking and drug taking. This culture can be hard to avoid as a young person first starting out. After earning a good wage, Harry moved on to cocaine use. At first, it was just to enjoy on a night out but before too long he was taking it before he went out and eventually taking it on his own at home. Addicts attract addicts and this amplifies addiction and normalises drug and alcohol addiction in peer groups. Harry found that no matter where he went, he would attract what he calls ‘wrong’uns’. Harry was miserable, but the people around him didn’t realise, he would always put on an act when in company, often behaving larger than life. Harry reached out for help from his GP but was told there was no funding. It took Harry standing on a bridge contemplating jumping before he really got the help he needed. The tough part of sobriety is the clarity it brings. Addicts will frequently blame everyone apart from themselves for their behaviour, Harry recognises this in his own addiction journey, particularly towards his parents. At his lowest point, Harry was having episodes of psychosis as well as feelings of complete despair, he just wanted to die. Addicts will often ask themselves, if I don’t drink or take drugs what will I do? The answer is you will start to live your life.   BEST MOMENTS  “Any opportunity I wanted to drink, because I liked the effects of alcohol, I liked how it made me feel. It made me feel loose, it made me feel comfortable” “When you’re an addict you attract addicts” “If I was on my own I was miserable but as soon as I had company I was giving it the big one” “For the first time in my life, I am sat there saying, help me” “I just wanted to die, I just didn’t want to wake up” “People say you have a choice, if I had a choice I wouldn’t have ended up where I was, there isn’t a choice” “People don’t realise the strength it takes to go sober”   VALUABLE RESOURCES     CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE GUEST Harry Tuffs “My name is Harry Tuffs I am 26 years old, I have been clean and sober for 4 years. As I stand on the edge of a bridge I prayed for help, I begged for something or someone to help me I was broken.  3 days later I ended up in a treatment centre where my road to recovery started!!  Today I sit here 4 years clean and sober, with a life beyond my wildest dreams!! Ambition Killed My Alcohol Addiction with Comedian and Podcaster Francis Foster

Fellow podcaster and comedian Francis Foster of the Triggernometry podcast joins Dan to talk about his struggles with alcohol addiction and how he used his ambition to combat it. Dan and Francis also delve deep into the world of comedy and podcasting including being featured on the Joe Rogan podcast, cancel culture and how comedy has evolved in their lifetime and not always for the better. An episode that really evolves through the hour and features segments on mindset, tips on dealing with addiction and ADHD as well as Dan talking about the time he passed to the other side! CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Many comedians out there worry about older jokes from their past coming to light and running the risk of them being ‘cancelled’. No comedian is immune to the current cancel culture in comedy. Francis was featured on the Joe Rogan podcast recently, Francis found Joe very inspiring and reveals that who you hear and see with Joe is the real him, he is authentic and giving to the podcasting space. Comedians can struggle in the UK, many are too focused on being politically correct. The U.S has a very different comedic landscape, they seem to allow more free speech in comedy. Francis believe being mixed race allows him to question British culture more, it gives him a unique perspective. Evolutionarily speaking, it’s important we take notice of and remember threats. This is why negative press, comments and trolling online can be so hard to ignore. It’s easy to be misrepresented, you need to be clear with what you say so that things you say can’t be misinterpreted or taken out of context. Both Francis and Dan have ADHD, there are a lot of mental health struggles that come alongside this diagnosis but they both find that there are things they can do to help themselves, such as regular exercise and reducing mobile phone use. Francis was the type of drinker that didn’t ‘need’ a pint but as soon as he had one he would struggle to stop and the aftermath the next day was incredibly difficult to deal with mentally. Francis realised that to achieve the things he wanted to and be successful he could no longer have alcohol in his life. If you really want to do something, you will do it. Francis believes if your motivation is powerful then you can and will give up your addiction and this is why he was able to become sober for 12 years. Lad culture is detrimental for men in the UK and feeds into the widespread alcohol and drug problems found in our society. What happens, happens to you but how you choose to respond to it gives you control. CBT is a form of therapy that changes how you view situations and is something Francis uses, it’s also the only form of therapy proven to work in this way.   BEST MOMENTS  “I just use stand up as my drug” “You’re judging a 1992 joke by 2022 standards and that’s not fair” “There is no difference between Joe Rogan the podcaster and Joe Rogan the host” “The funniest comedy is when you say I can’t believe they just said that” “Comedy is the blues for people who can’t sing” “I couldn’t see any light, I couldn’t see any positive. I realised if I wanted to make something of myself, if I wanted to achieve I couldn’t have booze in my life” “The amazing things you have achieved in life have come from ambition, from wanting to better yourself” “I wanted to have a career in comedy and I wanted to be great in comedy. I just knew if I drank that would never be an option” “I think you probably died for a second” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://francisfoster.co.uk/ https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/triggernometry/id1375568988   CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE GUEST  Francis Foster Podcast co-host to the Triggernometry podcast and stand-up comedian https://francisfoster.co.uk/ https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/triggernometry/id1375568988 https://instagram.com/francisjfoster?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= https://instagram.com/triggerpod?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= "My name is Francis Foster and I am a stand up comedian and co host of the Triggernometry Youtube show. From Gear to God with Pastor Mick Flemming

In this episode, Dan is joined by Pastor Fleming, a former addict and ex-criminal who found spirituality and God after a series of pivotal moments in his life. Mick turned to criminality and drugs after suffering two traumatic events as a child and shares with Dan his life journey from this point, into drug abuse and criminality and eventually into healing, through the power of faith. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Mick was sexually abused on his way to school at just age 11, this is when he started to repress his emotions and didn’t cry again until he was 42. He turned to drink and drugs instead. Mick’s criminal activity and attitude towards life was that if he was ‘soft’ he would get hurt so he did everything to be bad, as a form of protecting himself. Eventually Mick turned to crack cocaine, which not only was expensive meaning he had to find risky ways to make money but it also started to make him psychotic, he became more unwell faster both mentally and physically. A pivotal moment in Mick’s life was when he attempted suicide but failed, the gun didn’t go off, it made him believe that there must be a god and believe that maybe there was a different life out there for him. Shortly after, Mick was sectioned into a psychiatric hospital. It was here he first started to talk about his abuse, and he realised he wasn’t alone. It was the beginning of his healing journey. Mick believes that to find peace you need to live your life by Jesus’ teachings which are honesty, unselfishness, purity and love. To heal you have to remove the anger and resentment that you feel. For Mick, he was able to give and surrender these feelings to God which enabled him to go sober. To stay sober, you need to heal from the things that caused you to drink or do drugs in the first place or you will relapse. True healing, whatever form that takes for you, is the only way to long-lasting sobriety. When Mick began helping others, he came across his rapist. He initially planned to kill him, but he couldn’t do it, instead, he helped him. Sin is a state of existence, it never stops. Forgiveness is a choice but forgiving doesn’t make the original act ok either. Mick has been able to spread his message, that people can be healed and get sober across the world via his book: From Drug Dealer to Life Bringer   BEST MOMENTS  “I wanted to be bad because I thought being soft would get you hurt” “I’ve almost been killed twice” “I believe there’s a power bigger than me” “You’ve gone from gangster to sniffing decaff in a mental health unit..that was the beginning of my recovery” “Sin doesn’t stop, his sin becomes your sin” “The drink and the drugs are your friend” “I’m not god, I’m not Jesus, I can’t save anybody but I have a message that can” VALUABLE RESOURCES Mick’s Book: From Drug Dealer to Life Bringerhttps://t.co/N22x2RVvJEhttps://instagram.com/michaelfleming1550?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=https://www.cots-ministries.co.uk   CONTACT METHOD InstagramFacebookTwitter   ABOUT THE GUEST Mick Flemming – Pastor Mick himself said he should have been dead many times, he survived several attempts on his life after working as an enforcer for the criminal underworld, a failed attempt at suicide and years of violence and drug abuse. Accepting You’re an Addict; The Link Between Mental Health and Drug Use with Alex Drummond

Something a little bit different for this episode of the podcast, where Dan interviews Alex Drummond, from his men and their emotions group, to give the perspective of an ‘every day’ guy among the mostly celebs, professionals, specialists and social media influencers he usually speaks to. They talk about Alex’s experience of addiction and becoming sober and how it has given him the tools to help other people. They also discuss the almost inevitability of drug and alcohol use becoming an addiction and why addiction is so common among men. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Societal expectations can make it more difficult for men to reach out when they need help, from struggling with addiction and mental health to just everyday life difficulties. Accepting you are an addict is the first step needed to look for and acknowledge that you need help. The stigma attached to being an addict and simply the word itself can make this challenging. Alex started using drugs as just a ‘normal guy’. At first, he could manage drug use and his life. But after experiencing loss and other trauma, his drug use escalated and that’s when his problems truly began. From the outside, Alex’s life looked like it was good, his unhappiness and struggles were hidden and he was using drugs to cope with his emotions. After starting to use crack, Alex lost all his businesses, became homeless, and was sectioned under the mental health act. He had hit rock bottom and it took all of this for him to seek the help he needed. Almost all drug use accelerates. Everyone starts with a small amount and being able to cope with using and living an acceptable life, but at some point, it will accelerate. After you become sober you gain a lot of clarity, part of that means accepting how bad your behaviour was when you were an addict and being honest with others and yourself about the hurt and damage you caused. Figuring out the cause of your addiction is key. People use drink and drugs for a reason and until you can solve the cause of that you will struggle to become sober. For Alex, that meant accepting and facing his emotions and trauma.   BEST MOMENTS  “Acknowledging and admitting I’m an addict is it tells me what I now need to do…there’s a power in it” “I was just a normal bloke who used drugs” “I bottled up my feelings since I was a 10 year old boy, I learnt how to deal with not feeling emotions, when I got older, drugs used to numb the pain” “I could not stop taking drugs, how could I be doing good in all areas of my life but this had me defeated?” “I don’t feel comfortable with this feeling, I’m going to use drugs” “The problem wasn’t with drink and drugs for me, it was my thinking and then the drugs became the problem” VALUABLE RESOURCES CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST Alex Drummond “I'm 40 years of age, from Bethnal Green in East London, I'm currently working in technology event sales for a company called Inspired Business media. I worked abroad for 4 years in Europe then moved to South Wales in 2003. I started running nightclubs and developed a heavy cocaine addiction for the next 15 years. I helped set up 4 businesses, grew them, became very successful, got married, had a baby through IVF after trying for 7 years. My Mum died in 2013, I hit a brick wall and my using accelerated. Got kicked off as a director of my companies, got sectioned for my mental health, ended up in hospital with Sepsis, nearly died, split from my wife, wasn't allowed to see my daughter and was made homeless. Ended up in Rehab for nearly 5 months, then came out and relapsed again and ended up street homeless again. Finally on 1st June 2017 I found recovery nearly 6 years clean and sober. My rock bottom moment was trying to commit suicide again for the 3rd time and being devastated that I was still alive when I came round. Now I have a beautiful relationship with my daughter, see her 3 days a week, have a beautiful partner, we love together, I have a great job with quality people and I get to help others in my life who are going through the same thing. “ Instagram@Thatsoberman Facebook: @Thatsoberman ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. The Mindset of a Drinker: Alcohol Explained with Author William Porter

William is an ex-drinker and author, he joins Dan in this episode to talk about his first book, Alcohol Explained, a no-nonsense and practical explanation of alcohol; what it is, what it does and why we drink. As well as William’s book, Dan and William discuss their journeys to sobriety, their experiences of drinking and anxiety as well as the mindset of someone who is alcohol dependent. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  William was inspired to create his book Alcohol Explained, after reading the practical and pragmatic style in Alan Carrs book Easy way to Stop Smoking. William started drinking at 14 but it was after signing up to the Army that his drinking really accelerated. Another thing that further escalated William’s drinking was the pressure he felt after having children. Drinking alcohol is culturally normalised. It’s the only ‘drug’ that is legal and seen as ok to take. The sedative nature of alcohol is one of the reasons people reach for it first to help self-soothe. This is often where addiction starts. Alcohol affects our brain chemistry in a whole host of ways, this is one of the reasons we experience anxiety and depression. It also impacts sleep which again, can cause many mental problems and well as physical. The positives of stopping alcohol accrue over time, it can be hard to see the longer-term benefits when you first stop, especially as it’s been such a big part of your life. Williams's book explains the mindset of someone who is alcohol dependent, so it can and has been useful for those who don’t have a problem to read to understand people close to them who do. BEST MOMENTS  “I think everyone drinks more as years go by but there were a couple of things that accelerated my drinking” “You focus heavily on the things that are wrong the next day” “The information is there but people, like you say, don’t want to hear it” “If you feel really awful and you have a way to feel better, why is it irrational to take that?” VALUABLE RESOURCES www.alcoholexplained.com CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST William Porter After quitting I started to realise that what allowed me to quit was the knowledge I had, so I (eventually!) wrote it all down. That was Alcohol Explained. After this I continued to ponder the subject and wrote regularly in my blog, that eventually became Alcohol Explained 2. I started drinking and smoking when I was around 14 years old. In my late teens, in an attempt to stop smoking, I read Allen Carr’s Easyway. I was fascinated by his pragmatic and practical approach to what was a confusing and complicated subject. Over the years my drinking steadily increased but I continued to take a common sense analysis of what it was doing to me, coupled with a technical analysis of the chemical, physiological and psychological factors at play. This continued for over a quarter of a century, during which I joined the 4th (Reserve) Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, served a 6 month tour of Iraq, qualified as a lawyer, started a career in the Financial Services sector of the City of London, got married, and had children. My drinking continued to increase until, in February 2014, I finally stopped for good. I now live with my wife and two children in West London, and continue to work as a lawyer. BONUS! Admitting I Was Wrong PLUS REVEAL of Upcoming Tour for 2024!

Admitting you’re wrong is never easy but this is exactly what Dan does in this special bonus edition of the Menace to Sobriety Podcast. Listen in as Dan bares all in this raw, honest and sometimes triggering episode all about his journey to accepting himself; including when he has been wrong, his sobriety, coping mechanisms and his trauma. Dan also talks about the downsides of cancel culture, what he has learnt in his 167 days of being sober and reveals his upcoming tour for 2024! 2024 Tour KEY TAKEAWAYS  This will be Dan’s first tour that he will have written, created and performed sober.  The themes of his 2024 tour will be around sobriety, mental health as well as going from ‘lad to dad’! Our emotions are deep within us, our bodies hold on to trauma and if the right buttons are pressed we become triggered. There have been a lot of emotions coming up to the surface for Dan with this upcoming tour, some of which have been triggered by the press and reminding him of the period of his cancellation and the death of his Dad. Sobriety means clarity and that includes looking at your trauma directly and seeing it clearly. Cancel culture is toxic, it doesn’t allow for forgiveness or growth. Previously Dan didn’t want to take responsibility, he was more focused on being edgy and controversial. He had no reason to listen to what other people were telling him. But he now sees he was wrong. Dan accepts that he had an inflated ego, through drinking and drugs and that he did do and say things that were wrong in the past. He didn’t listen enough or take responsibility. Being sober has given Dan freedom; to accept he is wrong, apologise sincerely and achieve his potential. BEST MOMENTS  “This is the first time in my life I have written comedy sober” “Our bodies really hold onto trauma” “When we use drink or drugs we are chasing dopamine hits of happiness to hide the pain” “I thought I should have been forgiven sooner” “I was on such a mission to prove I was successful” “Ultimately, sobriety is a beautiful thing” VALUABLE RESOURCES 2024 Tour CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Grieving Your Addiction with Coach, Speaker and Podcaster David Wilson

Coach, public speaker and fellow podcaster (One for the Road) David Wilson joins Dan on this episode of the podcast to talk all things sobriety and how after transforming his own life after four decades of drinking, he now uses his experiences and knowledge to help others do the same. Dan becomes quite emotional in this episode that touches parts of both his addiction and sobriety journey, showing that recovery and growth aren’t linear. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  David transformed his life in 2019 after 4 decades of drinking, which almost killed him. Feeling rejected at home, David sought belonging in a gang of boys and this is when his drinking started, at just the age 14. People pleasing has followed David throughout his life, when he was the person people wanted to see in him, he felt accepted, he felt loved. At the time, David didn’t see anything problematic with his drinking but now looking back he feels the same as Dan, embarrassed and --- about how he spent so many days, weeks and years of his life. Don’t use the weekends to escape your life through alcohol and drugs, use them to build the life you want. David’s drinking developed over time from social drinking to spending entire weekends in solitude drinking as much as possible. He hated whom he had become and after a health scare and his mother’s death he knew he needed to change. As a functioning alcoholic, your life feels normal. You often forget what it’s like to feel sober and lead a normal life and it impacts every decision you make. There are stages to becoming sober, it generally starts with the physical side. You then have to tackle the emotions attached to your addiction. David compares becoming sober to being released from prison. He felt institutionalised from drinking for 30+ years. Your addicted self is still you and has been part of your life. To recover and grow you have to accept the positives and negatives of the past phases of your life.   BEST MOMENTS  “If you have those abandonment issues as a young lad and you found solace in drink and drugs, that becomes your soothing” “Booze turned you into the person you wanted to be” “I was massively people pleasing to be accepted” “Everything was about drink” “Although my drinking was different, my sobriety is the same” “It’s about embracing the old you as part of your life” "Sometimes you'll pick the destruction over the fu*king hard work" VALUABLE RESOURCES David's Podcast: One for the Road CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST David Wilson https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/ https://amzn.to/3BpvUPD https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/ https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/one-for-the-road/id1565341712 Transforming his life in January 2019 after 4 decades of drinking which nearly ended up killing him in April 2018, David Wilson, Accredited Grey Area Drinking Coach and Public Speaker, is dedicated to motivating others to transform their lives, overcome personal challenges and embrace life with a renewed mindset. Using his unique delivery and no-nonsense approach, Dave is both personable and relatable.  Connecting with a diverse audience, Dave (NACOA trained) has spoken at schools and colleges raising awareness of the impact and harm of the excessive use of alcohol for both individuals and family members.  A Training Associate and Ambassador for Alcohol Change UK, a leading UK alcohol charity, Dave is able to deliver his learned experience and knowledge to the workplace. The All or Nothing Mentality: Daniel hits 100 Days Sober PLUS Elliott Wald Returns!

This episode we welcome back Elliott Wald, the Hypnosis Expert, to celebrate Daniel O’Reilly’s 100 DAYS SOBER! They will be discussing the all or nothing mentality, the last hurrah, recovery and much more… Elliott has over 26 years of experience in psychology and linguistics, this teamed with his own personal experiences gives him a unique opportunity to educate and help individuals and families suffering the consequences of addiction. Most recently, Elliott has found success in creating content for TikTok and other social media platforms around addiction and sobriety which is helping many more people, on top of his existing clients, combat their addictions and inner demons. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Presence is the number one thing Dan feels like he has gained by going sober. He is enjoying the here and now, every day. Daniel never felt normal when he was using. He was either high, drunk, hungover or full of anxiety. Elliott attributes his popularity on TikTok and other social media to being relatable and sincere about his experiences. People can see themselves and their own experiences in his content. Those who aren’t ready to admit they have a problem can be very negative about you choosing to go sober but don’t allow them to bring you down, you will lose people on your journey to recovery and sobriety. You have to be completely mentally ready to go sober or there will always be reasons to put it off or talk yourself out of it. We all mess up sometimes, Elliott doesn’t believe in ‘relapsing’ in your sobriety journey. We instead have to admit that we have made a mistake and accept it so we can then refocus and realign ourselves. When becoming sober it’s important to prepare yourself for all situations where you may be tempted to use. This is a process Elliott calls ‘immunisation’. Adjust your mindset. Don’t allow yourself to see going sober as giving up anything or your brain will see it as deprivation. It’s not deprivation, it’s making a better life choice for yourself. Our unconscious is partly formed by our proven and personal beliefs. Elliott takes his client’s personal and limiting beliefs and experiences to help them overcome their addictions. BEST MOMENTS  “Now that I’m here, I feel 100 times better than I thought I’d feel on day 1” “I was either drunk or hungover” “This is your new power, this is your new habit” “You haven't relapsed, you’ve f*cked up” “You have to immunise yourself against every possibility, both mentally and physically” “You’re making a new lifestyle for yourself” “Your belief today is based on that past experience, you aren’t making that decision based on today” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.cocaineanonymous.org.uk CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST Elliott Wald is a Master Trainer in many therapies and over the last 27 years has become recognised as a leading expert in the field of Hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP and Modern Psychology. The Sesh-Head That Could Never Get Sober - Callum Baxter

In this episode of Menace to Sobriety, Daniel O'Reilly (aka Dapper Laughs) interviews a former drinking buddy, Callum Baxter. The two discuss their experiences with addiction, how their lives have changed since getting sober, and how they never would’ve thought Callum could have achieved sobriety. Throughout the conversation, Callum shares his story of recovery and encourages others to reach out for help if they’re struggling with addiction. Dan and Callum talk about how they had to distance themselves from each other in order to get better. Callum went through a phase of believing that everyone was against him, his friends, family, his therapist. This was the height of his addiction and the turning point to recovery. Dan and Callum recall some of their wildest times together on their journey through addiction and recovery. Family and friends are the most important asset in recovery. You should really value those around you, especially the ones that stick by your side through thick and thin. BEST MOMENTS  “I really thought that everyone hated me, I was paranoid” “I was kicking off at the smallest of things” “I started going to this therapy session where you had to feel your soul through your feet and ask yourself deep questions, I really embraced.” “I almost lost my daughter in hospital, I thought if she dies, ive got nothing to hold on to” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.cocaineanonymous.org.uk CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. There is an innate human urge to help and give back. Everyone is connected and we all work best when supporting each other. Brandon once got so high on Cocaine that he jumped off a Ferry into dirty, radiated water in Hong Kong, which resulting in him having part of his lung removed. He also tells the story of how he stormed on stage at the Brit awards and got in trouble! We live in a world that promotes anxiety and keeps us on edge. This is why it is really important to stay in the present. Practice meditation to release anxiety and get clarity! Burnout occurs when you are overstimulated and you become braindead. Brandon talks about his experience with Burnout and how he overcame it. The media sometimes forced Brandon into taking Cocaine for the cameras, it became necessary for him to be able to “perform”. Daniel Reveals All As Kirk Norcross Takes Over the Podcast!

In this episode, the tables are turned as Kirk Norcross takes over the podcast to instead interview Dan! No topic or question is off limits as Kirk delves deep into Dan’s own journey with addiction, mental health and his own personal struggles in life; from childhood trauma, to thoughts of suicide and dealing with the death of a parent. They also discuss relationships, the creation of Daniel’s alter ego Dapper laughs, the challenges that come along with being famous and living with ADHD. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Daniel didn’t have a stereotypical mum, but she was always very supportive, even when Daniel was in trouble or having difficulties. A lot of Daniel’s difficulties in life, particularly around being self-destructive, were down to childhood trauma. You have an unhealthy relationship with drinks and drugs if you struggle to stop and it’s creating issues in your relationships and life. Daniel is so thankful for his wife and that she stuck by him through his addiction and awful behaviour. He feels most ashamed of his behaviour because of how it impacted her and his children. The death of Daniel’s father hit him incredibly hard. He helped Kirk through difficult times, he was always looking at the positives in a situation and his death couldn’t have come at a worse time. When Daniel’s Dad died, his drug addiction spiralled, and he began to use them to cope with life. He contemplated suicide but thankfully sought help from the Samaritans. Daniel no longer restricts himself to one type of content, this way his content can evolve as he does, and he can always be himself. In the past, Daniel has been accused of being sexist. He realises now that although he wasn’t sexist himself his content often was and he was potentially fostering and influencing the wrong kind of behaviour. The press and cancel culture was very tough on Daniel. He feels like they decided he was a target and they were relentless in their abuse. This podcast has been accused of glorifying drugs but that is exactly it. Drugs feel glorious that’s why so many people have a problem with them and why they ruin lives. BEST MOMENTS  “He could really understand me, my father” “I don’t want to die, I want to find a way out of it” “My content is a reflection of my life” “The press will run with and hump on and virtue signal, once they decide they do not want you around that’s it” “People will be wondering if they have a problem with drinks or alcohol and their trigger will simply be finishing work at the end of the week” “Drugs are fucking glorious and that’s the problem” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.cocaineanonymous.org.uk CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST HOST Kirk Norcross  Instagram “My name is Kirk Norcross, I’m 34 years old, I had a pretty good run, a TV career which I can’t even remember hardly any of that, drugs consumed my life I always used drugs like an addict but I didn’t use them all the time until my fiancé split up with me for no reason and never gave me a reason and I was so upset, hurt and confused. I started using drugs to self-medicate to shut my brain down to stop thinking and then spiral turned and turned and turned until I was like a wrecking ball everywhere I went every penny I had went on drugs, my whole life revolved around drugs I tried recovery a couple of times and kept relapsing then I lost my due to suicide, and it was like something clicked in my head that I need to step up to the plate and be the man that my father wanted me to be, and from then on, I’ve been so as of today’s date I am 583 days sober haven’t touched any drugs or alcohol or any other mind-influencing substance since then.” ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Sobriety and Success Work When You Do with Addiction Specialist Taner Hassan

Taner’s own experiences drove him to start working in mental health and he has been gaining experience and knowledge continuously ever since. Both Dan and Taner are under no illusion, they both enjoyed drugs and the escapism they offered. But, in the end, the drug experience wasn’t worth the fallout for the rest of their lives. Having a problem with drugs or alcohol doesn’t mean you have to be dependent on them. A problem is just as soon as drugs or alcohol begins to impact your life negatively. It doesn’t matter what your addiction is, it’s about your relationship with the substance or behaviour that matters. Unless you are at peace with yourself and who you are, you can’t begin to do the proper work on yourself to have a successful and fulfilling life. You have to work and build on your happiness, it doesn’t just magically happen. Daniel lost years to his addiction and it can be hard to not think about the time he has wasted, yet he recognises that everything that happened brought him to where he is and who he is today. An individual's mindset is one of the most powerful tools they own. Often the difference between those failing and those succeeding in life is choosing to do something about their situation.   BEST MOMENTS  “I thought, I’m losing sight of actual reality now” “I can’t say I didn’t love drugs, I loved them” “What is addiction? I Was a Secret Drinker with Clare Pooley

Addiction and alcoholism can take many shapes and forms, yet addicts' experiences can be strikingly similar and, in this episode, Daniel is joined by Clare Pooley, an ex-secret drinker to open up about her experience of alcoholism and sobriety. Clare talks about her viral blog “Mummy was a Secret Drinker”, her background in advertising and how that world fed her addiction, as well as how she has remained sober for over 7 years. Clare also talks about her memoir “The Sober Diaries” and her recent New York Times Bestseller book “The Authenticity Project”. With addiction, it takes more and more over time to get the desired effect. This is why the amount of a substance used can creep up so easily on people. No one told Claire she had a problem with alcohol, she managed to keep her addiction hidden easily. The advertising scene in the 00s was very centred around drinking, it was just how things were done. This certainly impacted Clare’s attitudes around alcohol and was habit forming too. There are a lot of little signs that can signal a problem with alcohol, including drinking along frequently, googling about your consumption and any form of self-medicating. Asking yourself if you are an alcoholic or even an addict isn’t the right question. What you need to ask yourself is if the alcohol or addiction is impacting your life negatively. Being sober allows you to present in every day, effectively adding years to your life.   BEST MOMENTS  “The thing about addiction is everyone's experience of addiction is similar” “I didn’t want to quit drinking, I thought my life would be over” “What you should be asking, is if alcohol messing with my life?”   VALUABLE RESOURCES The Authenticity Project The Sober Diaries CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE GUEST Clare Pooley Clare Pooley spent nearly 20 years in the heady world of advertising, working hard, playing hard and drinking harder. That blog went viral and became a memoir - The Sober Diaries. Clare then turned to fiction. Sobriety is a Super Power with Ross Mac

Ross Mac is a DJ, event promotor and had a very late diagnosis of ADHD this year. As an ex-alcoholic and addict, Ross marks 8 years sober this year. He joins Daniel to talk about his demons with addiction, how he got sober and how he helps others do the same. Daniel and Ross also talk about mindset, the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people and the common alter-egos and self-destructive nature of addiction. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Ross began DJing at 14, doing big clubs at just the age of 16. It wasn’t until he was 34 that he then became sober. ADHD means that Ross easily obsesses over things, this is one of the things he attributes to becoming an addict. What he does now focuses his obsessions on the ‘right’ things like helping others, his recovery and his health. Becoming sober can often give an individual a huge amount of clarity, meaning they can make more conscious decisions but with it also comes regrets and remorse which can be hard to deal with. When you are an addict, it isn’t just about life when you are ‘on’ the drugs of alcohol. It’s the rest of your life when you aren’t too, it impacts every area of your life and how you think and treat people. You have to accept the consequences and results of when you were using, all you can do now is focus on staying clean and sober to try and make amends for your friends, family and yourself. Drink and drug use are so powerful that they can be causing everything to go wrong in your life and you still won’t want to give them up. Many ex-addicts talk about the role of self-destruction in aiding their addiction, feeling like they have an alter-ego that feeds their need for drugs and alcohol.   BEST MOMENTS  “I obsess about everything” “It’s not about you’re drinking it’s about your thinking” “Being sober is a superpower” “Now you know it’s a problem, you can let go of it” “Sober people are weird because they are nice” VALUABLE RESOURCES CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE GUEST Ross Mac Ross has suffered from poor mental health for as long as he can remember and was expelled from infant school at the age of 5. Everyone told him he was a naughty kid but in his 30s he learnt he was an addict, with ADHD - this realisation and discovery was a blessing.  Working and running events in nightclubs at the age of 13, Ross quickly turned to drinking and drugs as a solution to his problems. Despite his addictions, he managed to DJ and run events all over the world, but there was always a dark cloud that followed him -  that dark cloud was his mind.  He always knew what he was doing was wrong, he always knew he had developed an addiction, but he couldn’t stop. Drink, drugs, and women were their favourite pastimes, and he would (unfortunately) step over anyone to get what he wanted. His mind was scrambled 24/7 and he couldn’t work out the truth from the false.  On the outside, his life looked amazing but inside his use got worse, his mind got darker, and he found himself in a place where he thought he was going to die! He had been going to 12-step recovery meetings on and off for over four years, but one day he hit rock bottom and has never looked back. He’s been clean ever since, God willing, one day at a time. A decision that has changed his life. Ross got clean on 22nd September 2014 and discovering he is an addict has been the best thing that has ever happened to him. He’s been given a second chance in life and wants to share that with as many people as possible, that want a new out. He believes we have been put on this earth to help each other and that philosophy is his mission - to speak and help people every single day of his life, no matter where he is in the world. Since he became clean, his life has gone one way, and that’s up! The fog cleared, and his world opened up. Ross knows he’ll be an addict until the day he dies, but he’s grateful to understand his ADHD brain and that he had been self-medicating with drugs and alcohol for years.   Ross knows his journey is just the beginning but realises there’s so much more we could be doing to help others. In 2022 he launched RM Wellness Solutions, believing he can make a difference if people want change and are willing to work for a better, happier life. He wants anyone struggling to know that help and answers are available but first, you must want to change and be prepared to go outside your comfort zone.  The first step is to decide to change and seek out the help you need. It is never too late.  Ross says “ultimately, we have to be the change we want to see in ourselves and the world”. Instagram: Djrossmac    ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O’Reilly Daniel O’Reilly is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Emotions are the biggest thing at play in people’s behaviour, regardless of the therapy you use. You have to train your emotions in your unconscious mind to alter your mindset and behaviour. Everything that happens in the world started with a thought, with an idea. After struggling with his relationship with alcohol for most of his life, Robert had a moment of clarity where he decided to stop. He hasn’t struggled with this decision at all and has had zero cravings. He attributes this to There has been found to be a strong link between ADHD and addiction, Robert believes this is due to the hyper fixation part of an ADHD diagnosis. Those with ADHD can often be misdiagnosed with a variety of different mental health disorders, many don’t get diagnosed until later in life and quite often, not at all. Our behaviour is programmed into us from a variety of sources, including our childhood and those we surround ourselves with. To change behaviour or combat something like addiction, Robert believes we need to reprogramme our unconscious brain’s behaviours. Anxiety is one of the biggest reasons people seek treatment from Robert, alongside addictions, including ketamine and alcohol. Micro-dosing halogenic is a new area of therapy for both depression and anxiety. Early studies are very positive using drugs like LSD and even Magic Mushrooms. Elliot has over 26 years of experience in psychology and linguistics, this teamed with his own experience of addiction, gives him a unique opportunity to educate and help individuals and families suffering the consequences of addiction. He talks to Daniel about his own journey to sobriety, his knowledge of cocaine and addiction as well as how he has helped hundreds of people get sober. Recently he has found popularity in creating TikTok videos and this is where Daniel first heard of him. There are a set of characteristics specific to cocaine use, Elliott sets out to educate people to recognise these as early as possible, to help someone who may or already is suffering from addiction. If you recognise you have a problem with addiction, this may not be welcomed by those around you. Daniel likens it to holding a mirror up to those surrounding you and they don’t want to see it or admit they may have a problem too. As an addict, it isn’t possible to have just a small amount of the substance you have a problem with, no matter how much other people might try and convince you. People who offer drink or drugs to you when they know you have a problem aren’t giving you the support you need to combat your addiction. It’s absolutely possible to channel an addictive personality into positive pursuits, such as fitness. Secondary addiction is common, particularly around sex. In most things in life, there is a certain amount of pain to endure before pleasure. With cocaine, this is switched around which is one of the reasons it’s so hard to break the habit. Elliott believes there are four steps to the addiction to cocaine: 1. The anticipation of taking cocaine 2. The using of cocaine 3. Believing it will be different next time 4. The stress, anxiety and regret of using Lies are a big part of any addiction. You lie to the people around you, to yourself, about your addiction, how much you use, how often, the list is endless. Different people can have different substance addictions. You may have issues with cocaine but not alcohol, however, some people can become addicted to almost anything. To help someone, Elliott first has to understand them completely, he can then help them rewire their brain to go sober.   BEST MOMENTS  “I was a genuine lads lad sesh-head back in the day” “It goes from the most social drug to the most unsociable drug” “Sometimes when you recognise you have a problem or an issue it’s like holding a mirror up to the people around you” “I’m an all or nothing mentality” “What things have you done that you would never ever do if you weren’t on the packet?" “When you use, you lie” “I don’t judge people, I’m not there to judge you, I’m there to help you” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.cocaineanonymous.org.uk CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter   ABOUT THE GUEST Elliott Wald Elliott Wald is a Master Trainer in many therapies and over the last 27 years has become recognised as a leading expert in the field of Hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP and Modern Psychology. Elliott is a truly exceptional and effective Hypnotherapist, with an impressive track record of clients who have found his unique abilities ‘life changing’, including celebrities from the movies, television, sporting and media industries, as well as thousands of members of the general public who have experienced his extraordinary results, through his 1-1 work or at his seminars delivered around the world. Elliott is a regular face on our TV screens, having numerous appearances as the Hypnosis Expert of ITV’s This Morning Show and ‘Lorraine Kelly's Next Big Fat Challenge’ demonstrating his outstanding Hypnosis skills. His success continues to be featured on Television, in Newspapers, Magazines and Radio. Ex-Towie Star Kirk Norcross| Addiction, Psychosis & My Dad Mick

Join Daniel, Aka Dapper Laughs, in the first episode of his brand-new Podcast Menace II Sobriety where he cracks wide open the world of addiction and sobriety with an incredible line-up of guests to talk openly and candidly about their own experiences. In this episode, two ‘geezers’ talk all about their struggles with addiction and men's mental health as ex-Towie star Kirk Norcross joins Daniel to talk honestly, and sometimes brutally, about his own journey to sobriety. Kirk begins by talking about the beginnings of his TV career, including the real reasons why he quit as well as the truth about his dad’s suicide and how this led to a crippling drug addiction ending in psychosis. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Both Daniel and Kirk had to give up drink and drugs because they could never take them lightly, it was always an all-or-nothing mentality, leading to problems in their relationships and work life. Kirk believes that most addicts are born that way. Everything he does, he does so ‘like an addict’ from biscuits to cocaine. ADHD is something that both Kirk and Daniel have been diagnosed with as adults. It’s common for those with ADHD to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. It’s hard for addicts to talk about their times of addiction, not just from the shame of things they may have done, but also because of the concept of wasted time and opportunities too. You have to admit to yourself the damage drugs are doing to your life before you can begin to get sober and create a better life for yourself. Looking back, Kirk believes that part of his reason for quitting his TV career was so he could use more. TV and acting got in the way of the drug use he wanted to participate in. After the death of his Dad, Kirk sunk deeper into his addiction and was at the point he would take any drugs to just feel something different. This was when he started to suffer from psychosis. Kirk got to the point when he felt like he was going to die, he even tidied his house in preparation for being found dead. This was the wake-up call he needed to seek help. After starting Cocaine Anonymous, Kirk has been able to stay sober for 500 days. If you’re thinking about going sober, don’t worry about not enjoying your life anymore, you are finding freedom, from addiction and everything that comes along with it. Kirk’s Dad’s suicide is what helped him become a man, but he is still devastated that his Dad doesn’t get to see who he has become.   BEST MOMENTS  “So many people talk about mental health, addictions, for the wrong reasons” “It ain’t the people around us, it’s us. The problem is deep in us” “I used to use drugs to pass the time, I hated my life” “With the cocaine comes porn, it’s another addiction” “If you want what they’ve got, do what they’ve done” “Everything is about mindset, I’m not missing out, I’m free” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.cocaineanonymous.org.uk CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST Kirk Norcross Instagram “My name is Kirk Norcross, I’m 34 years old, I had a pretty good run, a TV career which I can’t even remember hardly any of that, drugs consumed my life I always used drugs like an addict but I didn’t use them all the time until my fiancé split up with me for no reason and never gave me a reason and I was so upset, hurt and confused. Chatting Boll*cks - The LHC is creating glitches in the matrix

The Large Hadron Collider is this massive ring (alright, calm down). Nerds use it to wind up particles, smash them together and see what happens. There are loads of conspiracy theories about this thing, saying it's an asteroid magnet or even a portal to hell. The mental part of it is, some of the best chat is actually rooted in proper science. Alternate dimensions, different timelines, that sorta stuff. Some people believe it created the Mandela effect, and I'm not talking the dodgy stomach you get the morning after a few too many beers. Chatting Boll*cks - The Mudfloods

As you may know, I consider myself something of an expert in moisture, but the conspiracy theory we’re bantering about this week is next level. Some people believe a mudflood swallowed up a whole civilization a few hundred years ago, and we’ve just moved into their gaffs. Apparently they had free leccy like that Elon Musk geezer or whatever, and the evidence is all around us. Jamie’s lost it. I’m calling boll*cks on this one, straight up. Hosted on Acast. Chatting Boll*cks - Wayfair is trafficking children

Browsing Wayfair is worse than getting dragged around IKEA by the missus when you’re battling a brutal hangover. I ain’t looking through 4,642 bedside lamps, and why you charging ten grand for a flatpack wardrobe that’ll probably turn out wonkier than me after an all-dayer? Conspiracy theorists have been coming across some dodgy, overpriced listings on there and arriving at the only logical conclusion: Wayfair is a front for child trafficking. Apparently it goes all the way to the top... if the top is Tom Hanks, anyway. Hosted on Acast.
