Why was the Turkey-Syria earthquake so deadly?

One week on, the death toll continues to rise from the Turkey and Syrian earthquakes.

Rescue efforts are underway but with over 30,000 people dead, hope is starting to dwindle.

Now, those who managed to escape are returning to their devastated homes to salvage anything they can.
