Sabrina Hill on anxiety, breakdowns, medication and more

Get 20% off my Substack here as a valued listener of Owning It. This episode is with Sabrina Hill, influencer, business owner, Cork woman, hair stylist and mother of two - a ten month old and a twenty two year old. It was really hard to write a title for this episode because we talk about so much: her experience becoming a parent at 20/21 and the psychosis and breakdown which followed, her divorce, her hormonal issues relating to anxiety, a rare reaction to medication and much more. Sabrina so generously shares her story and I can't thank her enough. Follow her here. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. ASMR + Anxiety: Everything You Need To Know

This episode is all about how ASMR could help your anxiety. What exactly is it? What happens to our brains and bodies when we experience ASMR? What does the research show? ASMR is such a new subject, it's hard to find people who know it inside out in an expert capacity but here I am joined by one such unicorn, Dr Craig Richards who founded the ASMR University. Owning Mental Illness with Sophie White

Buy Sophie White's book My Hot Friend here. Sign up to my Substack with 20% off for more Owning It related content and to connect personally HERE. I am joined here by award winning bestselling author and columnist Sophie White. Sophie shares her story with me, the pivotal moment at the age of 22 that changed everything, the diagnosis of bipolar II she would later receive, the anxiety of needing psychiatric care versus what it was really like and how she eventually began to own her mental illness. I want to include a trigger warning (TW) here as Sophie does discuss a particularly tough point of suicidal ideation that she reached in her mid 20s. Now a mother of three and an incredibly successful writer, I hope that Sophie's story gives reassurance to those struggling with mental illness, whether or not it is bipolar or just more chronic anxiety as was the case for me, that it won't always define you or be all that you do. There's so much to discuss with Sophie, we decided towards the end to make this a two parter. So this first episode is Sophie's story right up until she got a handle on things and we will follow up in a few short weeks with how her story continued when she became a parent, an experience which for many of us can be fraught with anxiety in itself. I was wrong about hypnosis

I am joined here by Stanford psychiatrist Dr David Spiegel to talk about hypnosis and self hypnosis. Now before you switch off and think 'ugh that's a load of poppycock' - I was and always have been cynical about this too but David is very much from the science and research school of thought and he utterly dispels my distrust of hypnosis here, educating me and hopefully you too on what an effective, scientifically backed intervention it can be to help us through anxiety, especially when it comes to things like phobias. I loved talking to him, and I hope you find it interesting too. And helpful! I'll be back in the new year but in the mean time please do hop over to my substack and subscribe for more content. ARCHIVE: Surviving Christmas Holiday Anxiety

I was going to record a new episode for this year but it would pretty much run the same as last year's so for anyone who needs a reminder - I'm bringing this one back to the top of the pile for the month that's in it. In this episode of Owning It, I'm talking about the various contributing factors that can give rise to anxiety at Christmas time (or 'the holidays' if you're in America/Canada). Why do we feel more pressure at Christmas? How can we shift our mindset to make Christmas more enjoyable? And looking ahead to the new year, when the self care machine goes into overdrive, I'm talking about how I'm approaching January with a goal of self maintenance over constant self improvement. The fear of falling apart again + anxiety over world news

Join me on Substack here where I write about anxiety, parenting and careers. For this solo episode I am talking through how I overcame my latest anxiety wobble - something I hadn't felt to that extent in so long. It really unnerved me and stuck around for a few days. For me, a fear I will probably forever grapple with is the fear of losing my mind. It comes now and then as a scar from the trauma and how I react to it is really important. I also cover in this episode the very significant 'vulnerability factor' that is our consumption currently of non stop tragic news coming from the Israel/Palestine conflict and how that can activate our stress response within our own daily lives. I hope you find this helpful, as always thank you for listening. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Understanding Perinatal Anxiety in Pregnancy

Are you pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant or trying to become pregnant and dealing with anxiety? Or did you experience anxiety in pregnancy? Perhaps it was anxiety due to the physical symptoms, or because you arrived at pregnancy after experiencing reproductive trauma, with lots of worry around conception and fertility, or loss, or because for whatever reason, the hormones in pregnancy just drove you into fight or flight mode. Maybe you thought you'd feel amazing and excited and at ease (which is the picture often painted of pregnancy) and in reality you were incredibly on edge, which is normal though not widely discussed. This episode where we explore perinatal anxiety is for you. I am joined by Michelle Flynn, perinatal psychotherapist and founder of An Croi Beag Psychotherapy. She has a wonderful gentle way about exploring this topic and I hope it's both comforting, useful and of course validating for anyone going through this or having gone through it in the past. To read more about my own parenting experience, sign up to my substack HERE. Delayed gratification and why it will help your anxiety

Is delayed gratification one of the overlooked secrets to reducing anxiety? Is immediacy culture and present bias fuelling our basal level of daily anxiety? That background hum or fizziness we have grown so used to living with? This week on episode of Owning It, with me Caroline Foran, I'm joined once again by Dr Padraig Walsh, behavioural psychologist, and founder of Actualise.ie, as we look to answer these more profound questions about our behaviours in relation to our experience of anxiety. It's in our nature to seek the path of least resistance but overall, but if we can't learn to sit with boredom or discomfort or hold off on doing something that will numb the discomfort, do we contribute more to anxiety? And if that's true, how can we go about working on delayed gratifaction and willpower with the goal of helping our anxiety overall? Living with ADHD, Bipolar + Anxiety: Matilda's Inspiring Story

If you're loving this series, do me a favour and hop on over to my substack and click subscribe. There I'll be writing lots more in depth content, with a huge focus on anxiety of course, as well as my parenting experience and some career stuff too. This week's episode is just so wonderful, had I been able to listen to this story when I was in my teenage years or early twenties, I know it would have made a massive difference in helping me feel less alone, and more confident about the challenges I was facing, that so many of us face. Matilda Heindow, you may know her on instagram as Crazy Head Comics, is my wonderful guest. She shares her story of growing up with ADHD, bipolar, anxiety and depression and, after a string of traumatic experiences that nobody should ever have had to endure, let alone endure within one year at the age of 17, she became ill with PTSD. It's hard to listen to at points, but believe me when I say Matilda is so incredibly inspiring, so wise and as she says herself she is now living her best life. She's channelled all of her struggles into the hugely popular Crazy Head Comics account, with well over half a million followers, and her new brilliant book The Art of feeling Better, which is out now. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. How I overcame my anxiety around travelling

Subscribe to my substack HERE. Sign up to Owning It: Real Time to help with your travel anxiety while en route HERE. Brought to you in partnership with British Airways Holidays, this solo episode explores my experience of travel anxiety. It's something that held me back from getting on a flight for such a long time and it meant I missed out on a huge amount of formative experiences. Eventually, I worked through it with some mindset shifts laid out in this episode and other coping mechanisms, leading to once-in-a-lifetime trips to Thailand and Japan. Part of managing travel anxiety, be it the kind I experienced or the general stresses that surround travel, for example when holidaying with children, is booking with the right provider. British Airways Holidays are making it so much easier to enjoy your holidays without the stress. All their holidays are ATOL protected, they offer a 24hr helpline should you need them when you’re away and allow you to book with a low deposit. You can enjoy flexible payments until you fly*, and can even use Avios points towards your holiday too! Plus, all their holidays include a 23kg baggage allowance per person, so no surprises when you book. 'How holding my breath taught me to live': how this free diver manages anxiety

Sign up to Owning It: Real Time HERE. Subscribe to my brand new Substack HERE. This week I am joined by Claire Walsh, bestselling author and free diver. Having watched The Deepest Breath on Netflix, I realised how much we can differ when it comes to finding the thing that helps to downregulate our stress response. For many people, the idea of plunging down into the darkest depths of the sea, in one single breath, without all the breathing paraphernalia would be enough to send them into a state of panic. It is certainly not for everyone and it requires major training and experience and it's high risk but for those who describe themselves as free divers, this activity can be how they manage their stress and anxiety. Here, Irish free diver Claire tells her story and what she's learned from holding her breath in the water which she can apply to her life on dry land. PS: I've recently launched a substack where I'm sharing a weekly column. Anxiety will be a regular theme but there'll also be discussions about parenting and work and relationships, such as how I've managed to build a reliable revenue stream from podcasting. You can sign up at carolineforan.substack.com Some content is free to read but you can pay the price of a fancy coffee per month to read the juicier stuff. For now, enjoy this episode. Buy Claire's book HERE. Anxiety advice from a 102 year old

Sign up to Owning It Real Time HERE. For this episode I am joined by the most incredibly inspiring woman, I was just hanging on her every word. her name is Gladys McGarey, she is 102 years old, she recently published a book called The Well Lived Life and she has quite the story to tell. We talk about anxiety today versus what she knew of it when she was starting out as a physician, her own experience of anxiety through her separation (after 46 years of marriage and six kids!), carving out a space for herself in a male dominated profession, being judged by other women and being taken seriously as a doctor. She shares a lot of sage advice about getting older and she's just a wonderful storyteller. The story about Mahatma Gandhi is one of my favourites from our chat. Why your anxiety is so physical + how to get rid of social anxiety for good

I can't write a title long enough to capture all that's in this episode but it is a banger. It is probably one of the most helpful ones I've ever recorded. It's practical, it's back to basics to some degrees and while I set out to talk with an expert about the physical manifestations about anxiety and how to manage those, such as understanding depersonalisation for example, the conversation really wound up being a very essential grounding for understanding the anxiety we experience and then, of course, it's jam packed with really smart and sensible ways to get on top of that anxiety. It's with Dr Harry Barry who I've had on twice before. He's always one of my most listened to guests. He has a new book out, The Power of Connection, which he'll discuss. He also shares what he believes is a surefire way to cure yourself of all social anxiety. The first 15 minutes are dedicated to social anxiety. As an essential add on to this episode, and for a real time way to practice the flooding technique he discusses, I really advise you sign up to my limited library of real time audio guides to help you with anxiety and panic, which I've called Owning It Real Time. Sign up here. I don't often promote my episodes as much as I should but for this one, well if I'd heard it when I was in the throes of anxiety myself, it would have saved me a huge amount of suffering. Emetophobia: the fear of vomiting and being sick

Sign up for Owning It: Real Time HERE My son was very ill last week so I had to cancel four recordings (sob) so alas it is another solo episode but given the theme of my week I've decided it's time to talk about emetophobia - or a lighter version of that which I think I experience - which is the fear of vomiting. Here I discuss the characteristics of emetophobia, how I handle looking after my son when he's unwell and how I coped through my own recent experience of feeling that I would, any minute, throw up. I hope this episode is of some reassurance or comfort or familiarity that you are not alone - nor are you mad - for having the fear. Navigating anxiety in your friendships

Sign up to Owning It Real Time HERE This is an episode I recorded a few weeks ago with the brilliant Dr Leah Katz. She's a clinical psychologist and bestselling author (her book is called Gutsy), she's been on the show before to talk about people pleasing, but here we are talking about relationship anxiety, but more specifically anxiety in our friendships which I think is a hugely under explored topic. We also touch on how to communicate your actual anxiety either to a friend or in a romantic relationship but as I say the thrust of our chat is on friendships and something I was really excited to learn about: dual realities. Your anxiety perfectly explained by a Neuroscientist

Access Owning It Real Time HERE Republishing one from the archives as it is one of my most listened to, and therefore most helpful episodes of all time.I think this might be the most insightful and informative episode I've shared to date where Dr Michael Keane, Behavioural Neuroscientist and founder of actualise.ie, talks me through exactly how our brain functions when it comes to anxiety and how we are best posed to take back control. I've never had someone explain how our brains work and how anxiety can happen in the brain in as digestible a way as Dr Keane does here. We talk about everything from the neuroscience stance on mindfulness, the power of language to enhance or reduce our feelings of anxiety, how we can strengthen our prefrontal cortex to down regulate the limbic system and how incredibly normal it is that we are all walking around this world feeling a little bit anxious. When anxiety comes after the trauma: Debbie's story

Sometimes we go through something that you think would bring a huge amount of anxiety down on top of us, but it doesn't hit us until we're out the other side. That's exactly what happened for Deborah Somorin. Here she shares her story - documented in her new book Believing In Me - about being taken into care at the age of 11, becoming homeless and pregnant and welcoming her baby boy when she was just 14 years of age. Despite the adversity she faced, Debbie went on to achieve incredible things and it wasn't until she was living a 'normal' life that anxiety eventually reared its head, along with imposter syndrome. Parenting Anxiety

This episode of @owningitpodcast is specific to those of us struggling with anxiety as we parent our kids. Namely, it's about how to regulate yourself so that you can help to regulate your child when their emotions are so erratic (which they are, naturally, at such a young age). How to handle tantrums, meltdowns, hard days and irrational toddlers without being left reeling in stress and anxiety yourself.  For this episode I am joined by world renowned self regulation expert Dr Ethan Kross, neuroscientist and psychologist and New York Times Bestselling Author of Chatter. Owning Your Boundaries

For this episode I am honing in on the world of boundaries. Here's the thing: boundary setting can give us anxiety in the first place, but living our lives devoid of boundaries can give us anxiety in the longterm which is what we don't want. I am joined here by 6-time New York Times Bestselling Author Melissa Urban, CEO of Whole 30 and now the author of The Book of Boundaries to talk about this unrecognised source of our collective anxiety, how to handle boundary push back, why a lack of boundaries gives rise to anxiety and why it's important that we also work on how we perceive other people's boundaries too. Manifestation: Bad for anxiety?

Do you believe that you are what you think? I'm not sure I do. Different to positive thinking, I feel that the popularity of manifestation might contribute to anxiety. Therapy: what kind do I need?

This is a very practical episode where I explore - with the help of clinical psychologist Dr Clare Kambamettu - the various types of therapy (not including alternative therapies) that you might encounter when seeking out help for managing anxiety. From psychologist to clinical psychologist, psychotherapist to psychiatrist, it can all become a little overwhelming at a time when, if you're looking for help, you're probably already pretty overwhelmed to begin with. Therapy is something we know little about until we start asking questions, so I hope this episode demystifies some of it for you. Join me on @OwningItPodcast for more. Why judgement makes us anxious with Dr Soph

Have you ever felt anxious after being judged by someone? Or perceiving that you might be judged? The fear of judgement and the impact of judgement are huge sources of anxiety. But judgement is such an enormous topic, it's a lot to unpack. Helping me do just that is @DrSoph (Dr Sophie Mort), author of A Manual For Being Human and clinical psychologist. We talk about passive aggression, gaslighting and other forms of judgement. Why we fear it, why it matters so much to us. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. How your environment feeds your anxiety, a neuroscientist explains

My most listened to guest of all time returns: Dr Micheal Keane. We're talking about how our environment - less so about the plants and the clouds, more so technology, social media, news, what we consume - feeds into this collective basal anxiety we probably all experience, even without being fully aware of it. This is such an interesting discussion that makes you think twice. We also hone in on fast fashion and consumerism. Remember Lily Allen's lyrics - I am a weapon of massive consumption, it's not my fault it's how I'm programmed to function'? Well that kind of sums up this episode. Crucially, he offers his expert advice on realigning with your values and moving towards your green circle (calming) to outmanoeuvre the machine. Introversion + Anxiety with Susan Cain

For this episode my guest is the mega selling author Susan Cain who wrote Quiet and started the Quiet Revolution which embraces the more introverted people among us. Scarlett Curtis shares her anxiety story

Welcome back to Owning It, this time my guest is not an expert but a very wonderful and prolific writer - Scarlett Curtis - who shares her experience of anxiety and depression with me. Scarlett is the Sunday Times Bestselling author of Feminists Don't Wear Pink and Other Lies and It's Not Okay To Feel Blue and Other Lies, and daughter of Richard Curtis, who has made some films you may know, including Love Actually. She says she's always felt like a bit of a sad cloud hanging over her otherwise happy family, due to her chronic illness and bouts of depression and anxiety. Here she shares her story. She shares her experience of crippling anxiety with me and how she had to hit rock bottom to turn it all around. Owning It: Brian Falduto's Story

Follow me @OwningItPodcast on Instagram. Brian Falduto - known as 'that gay kid' from School of Rock with Jack Black. Brian and I recorded for both of our podcasts so here you will hear me talk a bit about my own story too which I know you've heard before. Brian tells me his experience with anxiety which - though it has been building his entire life - really only surfaced quite recently and it is only now something he is confronting. Brian talks in particular about his experience after the movie came out, the bullying he endured for the character he played - which Brian says was just Brian - and the shame and homophobia he turned back on himself as a teenager. Eventually, this coupled with other lifestyle factors, would lead to Brian experiencing some pretty rough anxiety that became quite debilitating. So he went on to Spotify to find some podcasts on the topic, and he came across me. Enjoy and do follow Brian on TheGayLifeCoach as well as his own BrianFalduto page. How to support yourself while you support others

Join me on @OwningItPodcast for more. This week it's just me and I'm talking through the feelings of overwhelm and anxiety we can get when we are trying our best to support other people. What can we do when our empathy leaves us feeling overwhelmed? How do we support ourselves when trying to support others? What if I'm always this anxious?

One of the main characteristics of anxiety is that when you feel it, you believe that you will always feel it, that it will always be there. You can't accept that a day would come where it wouldn't dominate, when it's become chronic for you. I had these fears and worries too, I thought I would never be okay, and that there's so much in life I'd never get to experience from travel to love to having a child to public speaking, but do you know how many of these things anxiety has held me back from? None. In this short solo episode I talk through the fears I had, the things I thought I would never be able for but, because I owned my anxiety, I was eventually able to achieve. Trauma: Anxiety after the Storm

For this episode I am joined by a friend, Simone Gannon (also known as Simone Scribes on Instagram). She's big on social media for her skincare expertise and has amassed a huge following. Simone recently took to Instagram to share something she wouldn't normally: chats about her experience of crippling anxiety that saw her in and out of hospital with symptoms of a suspected stroke. Here she shares her story with me, as she is passionate too about normalising anxiety and also talking about it while we are still in the thick of it. Her experience of anxiety follows a traumatic experience she had involving her son. As is very common, when we experience something really tough, we are filled with adrenaline and our bodies have our backs while we 'get through' what needs to be done. When the dust settles, the anxiety can swoop in and force us to process things we hadn't yet addressed. Why are we anxious when we can't control things?

This week, and as we are at the very beginning of the new year, I'm tackling the subject of anxiety and change. Also in this episode we go off on a helpful tangent, talking about our (mostly MY) need to be in control. What to do when the news gives you anxiety

Word of warning: My guest's audio wasn't ideal for this episode, there was very little I could do about the feedback issue on Dr Clare's side of the audio, so I hope you can forgive this. Hopefully next time I record with Clare we can be in person in studio. For this episode of Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast, clinical psychologist Dr Clare Kambamettu joins me to discuss the impact that consuming news around the clock can have on our minds and bodies. Maybe that's social media, maybe that's news on your TV, and it's especially relevant now with Covid. We are facing a very legitimate threat with Covid and keeping tabs of all of the latest news surrounding the virus has become a coping mechanism for many of us. For this final episode of season 6, I am joined by the very lovely Cressida Bonas - actor, writer and more recently podcaster. Her podcast Fear Itself is earning rave reviews and features guests such as Ellie Goulding, Sir Richard Branson, Dr Pippa Grange and many more. Her focus is on fear and how fear might actually be at the root of all of our main emotions. Joining me here she tells me her experience of anxiety - including some pretty debilitating catastrophic thinking - as well as navigating a life as a very shy person for whom much of their work is public facing. How To Make Catastrophic Thinking Work In Your Favour

For this episode I am explaining a few key tools that I use again and again when feeling anxious about an upcoming event or a change of some kind. Fear hacking - using catastrophic thinking to work in your favour - followed by positive visualisation which involves a tool in itself called 'anchoring' and much more. This episode is just me and the content I'm discussing is based on what you'll find laid out in my 13 part toolkit in The Confidence Kit, my second book to have been published. The Mind Gut Connection with neuroscientist/gastroenterologist Dr Emeran Mayer

For this episode I am going back to where it all started for me: with gut issues. Diagnosed and plagued with IBS for most of my teenage years, I had no awareness that a lot of what I was experiencing was anxiety manifesting in this way. My tummy issues made me anxious, my anxiety made me have tummy issues. I am joined here by the world renowned author of The Mind Gut Connection, Dr Emeran Mayer. (I wrongly title it the gut brain connection in my intro so apologies for that!) He is not just a gastroenterologist but a neuroscientist too and where these two disciplines overlap, you know there is a lot to be learned. I hope you find this episode helpful and validating. Owning It: How to handle unexpected change

Sometimes in life, things change or thing go drastically downhill, without any forewarning. For Jane Enright, author of Butter Side Up, big, negative life changes occurred to her 3 times within the space of one year. 3 changes that would leave almost anyone in the throes of anxiety, negativity and hopelessness. But Jane realised she already had a lot of the skills necessary to get through this, if she just tapped into them, now that she really needed them. In this episode she shares her story with me, and how she handled the anxiety that went along with such traumatic incidents as well as how we can better process the things in life that happen that we do not see coming, so that they don't swallow us up. Happiness anxiety: what is it, why we struggle with it and what can we do?

Happiness anxiety sounds oxymoronic but it's a real thing: it's known as Cherophobia which sounds sinister but really it's just the anxiety that can arise intermittently (or it can also be quite all consuming) when you fear that if things are going well, something has to go wrong. For me it manifests as feeling so grateful for what I do have in life that I think it will be taken away from me or that I don't deserve it. For others it can be an actual aversion to joyful experiences which require an element of letting go and being comfortable with being vulnerable and the idea that things are transient and not everything works out. For this episode I am joined by clinical psychologist Dr Malie Coyne to unpack Cherophobia, what it is, why we might struggle with it and crucially what we can do about it.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. For this episode I am joined by the founder of Happy Not Perfect the app plus the new book of the same name, Poppy Jamie. She has an incredibly illustrious career behind her with a refreshingly honest story. As much as I know about anxiety today, Poppy said many things that really gave me an a-ha moment, making me think twice bout things. She offers in this podcast, a step-by-step approach to dissolving anxiety in the moment. Most notably, she's all about employing curiosity as her most reliable tool for quelling anxiety when it rises. I found her insights here incredibly helpful and I'm sure you will too. OWNING IT: Johann Hari on why we're anxious

Johann Hari is a really interesting if somewhat controversial character. He is a prolific journalist, an NYTimes bestselling author and his Ted Talks on the reasons why we might be anxious/depressed has been viewed a staggering number of times. He too also struggled significantly with anxiety and depression. He has some really hard-to-argue-with insights on the various reasons why we collectively struggle so much: we have a series of unmet needs, or as his book title suggests, we are suffering from various lost connections. Here he chats to me about some of the key reasons why we struggle (according to him and the research he has done around the world chatting with experts) as well as what we can do about it: social prescription, questioning our junk values and more. Owning It: Dealing With Workplace Anxiety

I asked my followers on Instagram where in their life anxiety was most likely to pop up, the most common response was at work. Dealing with a difficult boss, a confrontation colleague that you don't get along with, anxiety about proving your worth in your role and so much more. Lynda Barry - communications expert and career consultant - has been on the series before when we discussed career related anxiety, but that was around getting a job, moving jobs, wondering what to with your career on the whole. Here we drill down further into the job you are in, the day to day anxieties that crop up and can wreak havoc on our wellbeing. Owning It: Is Your Anxiety A Habit? With Dr Judson Brewer

Welcome back to season 6! Dr Judson Brewer is legit amazing; he has his own neuroscience lab in which he and his team carry out lots of research to back up everything you'll find in his latest book Unwinding Anxiety, which is probably one of the best books I've ever read on the subject. In it, and in our conversation here, Jud puts forward the idea that maybe anxiety is simply a habit loop we've got stuck, something that plays out several times a day in the format of trigger, behaviour, result. It's a really interesting and empowering idea because when you start to wrap your head around it, it becomes something you can better manage or almost hack. Owning It: The surprising power of human touch for reducing anxiety

In this bonus episode of Owning It, brought to you in partnership with NIVEA, I am joined by Claudia Hammond. Claudia is an award-winning broadcaster, she is visiting Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Sussex and the author of four books, most recently The Art of Rest.  We talk about the significance of human touch - something we've been seriously missing since lockdown - when it comes to lowering our anxiety in particular. It's not just something that feels nice, it has a real impact on your body at a biological level, boosting the nice hormones and dissolving the bad ones. We talk through the science behind it, the findings from an incredible piece of research called The Touch Test, and how we can gently reintroduce human touch back into our lives as things begin to open up. We also talk about the natural apprehension we're likely to experience as things return to 'normal', and how to circumvent this. NIVEA Cares beyond Skin, to find out more about NIVEA's #CareforHumanTouch initiative visit nivea.co.uk/humantouchSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: Why my anxiety soared after having a baby

For this episode, I am joined by Layla O'Mara, founder of Nuanua.com, a wonderful online resource with courses that nurture mamas in their postpartum journey. Layla was someone I turned to in a moment of desperation, when I found myself, having come home from hospital with my new baby boy, feeling as though I had plummeted to the depths of anxiety. I didn't feel happy or excited or relieved, I felt consumed by anxiety, physically and emotionally. It's not nice to say this out loud, but it took me a while to feel happy. Owning It: Anxious about returning to normal post-covid?

For this episode of Owning It, it's just me and I'm talking through a very real anxiety that a lot of us are facing: anxiety around returning to normal post covid. It might sound silly, to be anxious about getting back to the life we lived before - when Covid has been a major source of anxiety for many of us, but something has happened. After reaching this crescendo, Dermot eventually found meditation, and though it was somewhat underwhelming, he noticed a much calmer version of himself begin to emerge. Now he is a meditation teacher and has learned many techniques to dissolve anxiety, which he shares here. With humour and simplicity, Dermot will convince you that focusing on your breath is perhaps your most under utilised anxiety reducing tool. But with such a high pressure environment that was sent against the backdrop of a chaotic and turbulent home life, things were not as wonderful as they may have seemed. Alyson chats to me here about the trauma she experienced, how her anxiety manifested as an eating disorder, how and when she knew she needed some help, how she came through it, and how she now reconciles her childhood experiences so that they inform her life as a wellbeing and mental health advocate now. Owning It: Men and the stigma of admitting they're struggling

For this episode I am joined by Gareth Mullins, head chef and self described perfectionist and high achiever at Dublin's 5 star hotel The Marker. Gareth reached out to me a few years ago to say he was struggling, he didn't understand why and he didn't want to admit that he was having a hard time with anxiety. He went to the doctor, who suggested medication, which he didn't want to take because to him that meant admitting defeat or weakness. Here we talk about the stigma that unfortunately still lingers around mental health, particularly when it comes to men. Is there room for anxiety in a high pressure, nothing-less-than-perfection work environment? There needs to be. Owning It: Why Don't You Like Me? With Stefanie Preissner

For this episode I am joined by the brilliant writer Stefanie Preissner for what I would say is my most radically honest and open conversation on this series to date. Both of us feeling the same anxieties, grappling with the same fears and so we talk it out. I hope you find this one as refreshing to listen to as I found discussing it. Owning It: Daniella Moyles shares her anxiety story

For this episode - one of my last of the season - I am joined by the beautiful Daniella Moyles who shares her anxiety story with me. Apologies for the sound quality on this - the internet connection was very dodgy while we tried to speak on Zoom! I've known Daniella for a good few years now and when I first met her, I would have been completely shocked to be told she struggled with anxiety, but that just goes to show you that anxiety is something that anyone can experience. She seemed to have it all - confidence, beauty, success, she was always sharing pics from some exotic destination around the globe. Nothing phased her, I thought, while my anxiety stole me of so many travelling experiences (but that just happens to be one of the ways in which it affected me). But I was wrong. Thanks to Daniella for her honesty and vulnerability here and if you are looking for a page-turning read that's beautifully written, get yourself a copy of her book JUMP. It was number 1 on the Irish bestseller list for a number of weeks running so you don't just have to take my word for it.Please support Owning It via the supporter feature on Acast, or tip the series via patreon - www.patreon.com/carolineforan.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: My Mother on how to support someone you love with anxiety

For this episode I am joined by my lovely mammy Aideen to talk about what it was like for her to see me, her daughter, go through a very tough time with anxiety and help listeners when it comes to articulating their anxiety to their parents if they find that their parents don't understand. This is also a great episode to ask a family member to listen to in order to support you. She talks about what she learned about mental health, anxiety and how things have changed since her generation when anxiety was never spoken of and mental health issues were put down to 'suffering with your nerves'. Owning It: How to help your anxious child with Dr Malie Coyne

In this episode of Owning It I am joined by Dr Malie Coyne who is an incredible clinical psychologist. She is the author of Love In Love Out, which is a compassion based approach to parenting your anxious child. Whether or not you have kids it's incredibly helpful to understand how anxiety manifests in children; it helped me to understand my own childhood anxiety in terms of learning about the development of a young brain, particularly how we learn to store long term memory and our fear response in our brain long before we develop logic and reason which enables us to rationalise our fears and worries. Don't miss Malie's book, widely available in stores and online and follow her on instagram for lots of child related mental health content. Owning It: Living with health related anxiety

In this episode, I am joined by Alison Curtis, national broadcaster with Today FM here in Dublin, Ireland. Alison is Canadian but we consider her one of our own. She has a very interesting story about her experience of health related anxiety that stems back to events she remembers when she was just 7 years old. She very openly shares her struggles and how this anxiety has affected her throughout her life, losing both of her parents to illness and now as a mother to 9-year-old Joan, how she navigates her worries there. She's one of the kindest happiest people I know and proves to me that you don't have to be anxiety free to live a good life, as long as you can find ways to manage it. Which Alison has done. Thanks for supporting me if you already have by tipping the series so that it can keep going via my Patreon page, patreon.com/carolineforan and don't forget the books (OWNING IT and The Confidence Kit - OWN IT and You Got This if you are in the US/Canada) are widely available around the globe on Amazon or local retailers.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: The Science of Self Compassion for Reducing Anxiety with TED Talker DR Kristen Neff

For this episode I am joined by one of my heroes: Dr Kristin Neff. She is so ridiculously qualified there just isn't enough room in the podcast notes to fill you in on why she's the business but we do discuss her background at the beginning of this episode. Her main topic is self-compassion and when I first came across her TED Talk, it was an instant game changer for me. Here she talks me through the science of self-compassion, how to bring more of it into our life, what we get wrong about it, how it can benefit us and what exactly happens in the brain and body when we choose to take the self-compassionate route. It is my ultimate anxiety reducing tool these days and I hope, upon listening to this episode, that it's the same for you. Owning It: Angela Scanlon shares her anxiety story

This week my guest is the wonderful Angela Scanlon, tv presenter, broadcast journalist, woman with the most stunning red hair you've ever seen, and she also hosts her own brilliant podcast called Thanks a million which is all about thankfulness and gratitude and she has some epic guests on there. On this series though, the topic of conversation is Angela's experience of anxiety and I just related to her story so much. The feeling of being at odds between how we present ourselves to the world and how we view ourselves privately, an incredibly common driver of anxiety. Owning It: Coping with anxiety surrounding a break-up

Something I have yet to really dive into is the anxiety surrounding a break up, which is something so many of us, if not all of us, will probably experience at some point in our lives. Maybe it's a split from your first love, or maybe, as is the case for my guest, journalist and author Liadan Hynes, it's a separation from your husband or partner with whom you share children or someone with whom you've built a life that you expected to see continue forever. It's a very tangible anxiety: that realisation that you need to remove yourself from the relationship, or maybe you're perfectly happy but then face the anxiety of learning that your partner wants out, and suddenly your whole life, stretching out in front of you looks different and terrifying. Here Lia, who has written an incredible book called How to Fall Apart shares her story, how she coped with the anxiety that went along with the various stages of this major life change and how she's doing now. I don't doubt that this will resonate with a lot of you and I hope you find it comforting. Just a note to say you'll have to forgive me for a slight dip in audio quality here, we were in the depths of lockdown when recording, I had builders drilling throughout the house and you might here Lia's little girl in the background at points too, who was being homeschooled, but such is the beauty of our vulnerable lives! Owning It: Why your pituitary gland holds the key to unlocking your anxiety

Hello dear listener and welcome to this expert led episode of owning it the anxiety podcast with your host, author Caroline Foran. This time we are delving into our endocrine system. What role do our hormones play when it comes to anxiety? What's the job of our pituitary gland - what even is that - and why is this so important if we want to bring down our anxious symptoms? Long story short, your hormones are EVERYTHING. And we so often overlook them or are completely unaware of how powerful they can be. It's not all in your head, it's all in your hormones. Here internationally renowned endocrinologist Dr Mary Ryan helps us to better understand our hormones, the key players involved with anxiety in particular, and advises us on precisely what our pituitary gland needs in order to function well, which, of course, leads us to feeling less anxious. Owning It: Anxiety surrounding coming out with Riyadh Khalaf

At this point in the season, I want to explore anxiety in the gay community: particularly the anxiety surrounding coming out to family and friends, feeling 'othered' at school growing up gay. For this episode I am joined by Celebrity Masterchef winner 2020, LGBTQ+ activist, bestselling author and broadcaster Riyadh Khalaf who shares his experience with me from childhood right through to present times. We talk about the anxiety of feeling at odds with how you think you 'should' be. The fear of rejection. How he navigated telling his parents that he was gay - which was not the story of instant acceptance you'd hope for - and where he's at now with self-love and acceptance. He offers great insights and advice for anyone facing their own experience of coming out. I really loved having this chat with Riyadh and whether or not you as the listener are gay doesn't really matter, if you've ever felt a disconnect between how you feel inside and the person you put out to the world, this conversation will resonate with you. Thanks as always for supporting Owning It on Patreon or via the new Acast support feature.Buy Riyadh's book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yay-Youre-Gay-Now-What/dp/1786031914Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: What you probably didn't know about exercise for anxiety with Dr Kelly McGonigal

For this episode I am so excited to be joined by a guest that i have so long wanted to feature on this series. Her name is Dr Kelly McGonigal. Her Ted Talk has inspired so much of what I do and has informed so much of my mentality and approach towards managing anxiety. In this episode we talk about exercise for anxiety and let me tell you, having recently published a new book about the neuroscience of exercise called The Joy of Movement, her insights are mind blowing. I did not realise half of this stuff. I'm pretty sure I say 'wow' after every answer to every question! Owning It: Deliciously Ella shares her anxiety story

I was so excited to get some time with Ella Mills of Deliciously Ella fame to chat about anxiety. We spoke over ZOOM as with most of season, it was recorded during lockdown when social distancing was key so unfortunately it'll never be as good quality as it would have been in studio. Ella is incredibly open in sharing her story of how her career came to be and how, when faced with all of this success, she began to experience crippling anxiety. She is a champion of owning one's vulnerability which you know is what I see as our superpower and she has come a long way in learning to embrace the anxiety that comes with her life and has reduced it massively with a compassionate approach as well as her love of yoga. Owning It: Emotional Distress Vs Mental Illness with Dr Harry Barry

For this expert led episode my guest is Dr Harry Barry. He has written ten books to help us manage our mental health and his latest is called Emotional Healing and it's widely available now. We have a really enlightening conversation about the difference between mental illness and emotional distress, the latter of which is what most of us are actually dealing with. Understanding the nature of emotional distress is so important and takes an awful lot of the fear away from anxiety. We also go into great detail on panic attacks and phobias, the three distinct types of anxiety we might experience and how they happen in the body as well as how we can intervene and get ourselves back to feeling at ease. Again, if I had listened to something like this a number of years ago, it would have made an enormously positive difference to me. I hope it does for you. Please support Owning It by tipping the series with the price of a coffee over on patreon.com/carolineforan or get hold of one of my two books - soon to be three: Owning It, The Confidence Kit or preorder NAKED: 10 Truths to Change Your Life.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: Brian Pennie's incredible story of overcoming anxiety

To kick off this new series, of which there will be 15 episodes that mix world class experts on anxiety in with everyday people's anxiety stories, I am joined by the incredible Brian Pennie. Owning It: How to manage anxiety as we come out of lockdown

This is the last episode of season 3 before season 4 launches in just a few short weeks. The topic? Just as we had to adapt into lockdown and deal with all of the anxiety that brought fore, so too will it take a little bit of time to adapt back to whatever our new normal will be. There might be some social anxiety, our bodies have been conditioned to be hyper vigilant to protect us from the virus so it could feel unnerving to be back in close proximity to others and in general we've all gotten used to living a much smaller life. Here's exactly what to be mindful of as you get back to normal. Plus 12 questions to always ask yourself whenever you feel panicky or anxious. Owning It: The power of decision making for anxiety

For this episode of Owning It I introduce a skill that has massively helped my day to day anxiety, especially as I approach anxiety-inducing life events where my amygdala wants to say 'no!' and run for the hills but my prefrontal cortex knows that maybe, this is something I should do, maybe it would be good for me. It's something I wanted to talk about now as we start to emerge from lockdown and life gets back to normal and we'll be spending less time at home and have more chance of confronting the anxiety of decisions to be made. Indecision breeds fear, making a decision quells it. Thank you for listening and supporting. Please tip the series at patreon.com/carolineforan. 3 Practical Ways To Manage Working From Home Anxiety During Lockdown

In this solo episode, the 6th of this season which is more geared towards helping us cope better during Covid-19, I take a look at some recent research that has emerged about how we are getting on working from home. Unfortunately, there is a huge increase in anxiety for several reasons, and that's understandable and okay but there are things we can do to put us back in the driving seat which will positively impact your symptoms of anxiety. Couple these with the mindset approaches we've been working on throughout this series and you will notice an improvement as your are shifting your focus towards what you can control and away from dwelling on that which you can't.Please tip the series over on Patreon if you are finding it helpful; it makes such a massive difference and allows me to keep sharing this content for free. www.patreon.com/CarolineForan and if you'd like to buy Owning It or The Confidence Kit (my two books on which this series is based) you will find them easily on Amazon or most online retailers. OWNING IT: How to approach financial anxiety

For this episode I am joined by financial expert and author of How to be Good with Money, Eoin McGee. Right now financial anxiety might be an issue for a lot more of us than would normally be the case, thanks to the impact of the pandemic. It's certainly something I am feeling and as such it's something I wanted advice on. Knowing how to manage financial anxiety, with practical steps, will not only be helpful now but always stand to us should we ever find ourselves struggling against this very tangible vulnerability factor.Support Owning It The Anxiety Podcast here on Patreon, and a huge thank you in advance.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: What is a 'stretch zone experience' and why is it important?

Hi guys, in this second episode of season 3 I am drilling down into some of the content explored in my second book, The Confidence Kit. I am looking at the comfort zone model and the importance of what's called a stretch zone experience when it comes to owning our anxiety and building our confidence. I talk through the ideal scenario so that we are not feeling excessive anxiety at any point but are not so stuck in our comfort zones that we are not growing our challenging our anxiety so as to ensure it doesn't own us.Support the podcast on patreon here. Owning It: Why your anxiety makes perfect sense

Hello dear listener and welcome back to season 3 of Owning It The Anxiety Podcast. I am back a little sooner than planned with slightly different episodes than planned and for that we can blame the pandemic, hurrah! I know anxiety is at an all time high right now so I want to be there for people who need reassurance via the podcast. For season 3 it will be just me releasing weekly short episodes that will offer a coping mechanism, a how-to or something useful that I hope will help you to feel more at ease not just during the pandemic but outside of it too. These are anxiety management skills that have turned my life around and often they are very simple. First up I want to reach out to anyone who has maybe never experienced anxiety before and is feeling unnerved by its presence or for those who thought they were doing fine and suddenly feel its weight again. This 20 minute episode will reassure you that whatever you are feeling is A-OK. Thanks for supporting me if you already have by tipping the series so that it can keep going via my Patreon page, patreon.com/carolineforan and don't forget the books (OWNING IT and The Confidence Kit - OWN IT and You Got This if you are in the US/Canada) are widely available around the globe on Amazon or local retailers (online for now!) Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: Covid19 anxiety coping skills

While I'm in between seasons but we are in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic which is all kinds of anxiety inducing, I wanted to create this short 8 minute long coping skills episode that also plays like a meditation that will soothe your anxiety and give you practical advice to implement once you've finished listening. This is a tough time and the anxiety that goes with it is enormous. Understanding the anxiety and how much sense it makes, not trying not to feel it and not berating ourselves for the fact that we feel anxious about this is key to coping. Work with it and then set boundaries in place. All advice within this 8 minute episode.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. OWNING IT: Pregnancy and anxiety

This is the final episode of season 2 but worry not I will be back before you know it with season 3. This episode explores anxiety and pregnancy as I am currently pregnant. You don't have to be pregnant to find this helpful but if you are anxious about the prospect of having kids or becoming pregnant - especially dealing with morning sickness - you might find this useful. OWNING IT: What it's like to live with OCD and what we get wrong about it

For this episode I am joined by fellow journalist and podcaster Aisling Keenan (her podcast is Private Education which is all about sex and relationships, she has a live event happening in Dublin soon and tickets are available here). Aisling is a very open person but something she's never discussed openly is her experience of OCD with which she was recently diagnosed. I wanted to understand more about this condition as it's so wrapped up in misinformation and it's so often trivialised. If you're someone with OCD I hope you'll find this comforting and if you know someone who struggles with OCD, I hope that you'll feel that little bit more informed after listening so that you are better able to support them. Owning It: 'Will I always feel this way?' I answer all of your anxiety Qs

In this episode I have taken the opportunity to answer as many questions as I can fit into one listening. I cover everything from where I'm at with medication, whether or not going vegan can help with anxiety (can't say that it does unless your anxiety is related to eating meat), how I cope with the fear of the fear, what I do for the physical symptoms of anxiety and much more. I will probably do another episode like this in the coming months as there are so many questions I didn't get to but an awful lot of what was asked is already covered in existing episodes and in both Owning It and The Confidence Kit books so I highly recommend you start with those. Owning It: Stopping Social Comparison Induced Anxiety

This week it's just me for a brief solo episode to hone in on some of the less obvious drivers of anxiety. I'm focusing particularly on social comparison here and in future episodes will look at imposter syndrome, perfectionism, people pleasing and the likes, all of which can enhance our levels of anxiety without us really being aware. Here I offer my practical approach to handling social comparison induced anxiety, what I've done to make it a whole lot easier and why temporal comparison is more motivating than social comparison will ever be. This week I am so happy to be joined by the man who goes by one name only - Bressie. Bressie has been a major support for me through my own experience of owning it and getting my first book published and despite his hectic schedule and his own brilliant podcast - Where is my mind podcast - he took some time out to sit down with me and have a long chat about his own experience. What was happening in his life when his anxiety reached its apex, why he decided to share it with the world, what changed when he did, what he hopes to see changing at a wider societal level now and how he manages it to this day so that it never gets the better of him again. Owning It: Dealing with anxiety in relationships

Maybe you are the anxious one and you're feeling like a burden or extra anxious because of the effect you think your anxiety will have on your partner. Maybe your partner is the one struggling with anxiety and you're not sure how best to support them and you don't really understand what they're going through. Maybe you've met someone you really like and you're not sure whether or not to broach the topic of anxiety and reveal that you experience panic attacks. All of this is covered in this special episode which I originally recorded with fellow journalist and podcaster Aisling Keenan for her amazing series called Private Education. OWNING IT: Blindboy shares his anxiety story

This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Blindboy - of the very successful The Blindboy Podcast - and author of his latest book Boulevard Wren and other stories. Blindboy tells me about his experience with anxiety as a young adult, the origins of that anxiety, how he looks after himself these days and everything he learned from his psychotherapy studies. We also talk about anxiety among men and how to get comfortable with uncomfortable feelings. Blindboy has a unique way of articulating what anyone who has experienced anxiety has felt and I really enjoyed chatting with him. Owning It: How sleep affects anxiety and how anxiety affects sleep

In this episode of Owning It I am diving into the subject of sleep with sleep expert Tom Coleman. We talk about the importance of sleep for regulating emotions, how a sleep deficit affects anxiety and how anxiety affects our sleep. Crucially, Tom offers his best advice on how to improve our sleep, our ability to fall asleep and to stay asleep. We talk generally a lot about what's happening at a biological level with anxiety too. I got so much from chatting with Tom and I hope you do too. Owning It: Anxiety at work with Dermot & Dave

For this episode of Owning It The Anxiety Podcast I am joined by Irish radio's most loved duo, Dermot Whelan and Dave Moore (more commonly referred to as Dermot & Dave, of Today FM fame). Both of the lads share their respective experience of anxiety along with how they look after their mental health today. We talked about everything from anxiety when you're a parent (which is something I've yet to experience) to the role that gender plays in our experience of mental health issues and ultimately how we can, as a society, best approach the issue of anxiety in the workplace, where so much anxiety comes from. Dermot and Dave are keen to stress that occasional tokenism doesn't have a lasting impact. Both of these men are avid meditators (Dermot now teaches it) and they will certainly convince you to indulge in your own version of quiet time. Thanks for tuning in, please don't forget to subscribe if you're enjoying it, and I always appreciate the (nice!) reviews!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: Cassie Stokes talks heartbreak, agoraphobia and prawn-induced anxiety (yes)

As mentioned in the podcast intro, here is the link to my upcoming event in The Alex hotel. It's a publishing masterclass for anyone who's ever dreamed of writing a book. There will be more events coming soon specifically themed around anxiety so stay tuned for those.https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/so-you-want-to-write-a-book-publishing-masterclass-with-louise-oneill-holly-white-and-caroline-foran-tickets-62361312364?aff=ebdssbeacThis week Cassie Stokes of Xpose fame joins me to talk about her recent experience of heartbreak and the anxiety that goes along with it, as well as how anxiety manifested for her from the age of 20, including a fear of prawns, a fear of people in large crowds, a fear of being sick on modes of transport and more. Through therapy and CBT skills that she still uses to this day, she's managing it well. She knows it will always be there but she understands it and has the coping mechanisms necessary to own it.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: James Kavanagh talks panic attacks and letting anxiety happen

For this episode I am joined by James Kavanagh, TV presenter, broadcaster, social media superstar and co-founder and co-author of the award winning and bestselling Currabinny book and brand. James shares his experience of anxiety in recent years - manifested in midnight panic attacks - at a time in his life when everything is - on paper - very good. So why now? We trace back over his experience of being badly bullied for being gay throughout school and how perhaps his anxiety now, at a time when he accepts himself entirely, might be in fact a delayed reaction to having gone through a very hard time growing up, coupled with the anxiety of leaving a full time job and going out on your own in the unreliable freelance world. We chat about the comfort zone, social anxiety, panic attacks and so much more.  Buy Own It in the US and Canada here. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: Social Anxiety, Stammering and Self-Acceptance

In this episode, I am joined by my brother Daniel who experienced a social kind of anxiety brought on by his stammer. Daniel has had a stammer for as long as I can remember but I never knew quite how much it affected him and gave him anxiety until recent years (he's in his mid 30s now) because he simply didn't want to discuss it. To go from a fear of saying his name out loud to recording with me, he has come a long way and I'm so proud of him. I've learned so much from this episode about triumph in the face adversity and I hope you will too. RESOURCES - www.stammering.orgstammeringireland.iewww.mcguireprogramme.comtoastmasters.org Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It Bonus: Common Mind Traps With Day to Day Anxiety

I had some time to spare and rather than relax I recorded this quick little episode on the common mind traps that we might fall into that give rise to stress and anxiety in our day to day lives. For example, a big one is 'catastrophizing' (I'm using a 'z' in that word for US listeners). So maybe you're not really struggling to get your head off the pillow with anxiety, but maybe you find that there's a low level anxiety that's just kind of always there and getting slightly in the way of your life. If that's the case, you may be experiencing some of the common mind traps that we'll discuss. This is more of a dip into CBT which is one of my essential tools for managing and owning my anxiety on an ongoing basis. This week I am joined by Vogue Williams to talk about anxiety after a bad breakup, anxiety in a former partner when she didn't really understand it, and how having a baby has left her with no time to feel too anxious these days. Owning It: Let's Talk About Anti Anxiety Medication with Dr Rosie Plunkett

For this episode, we will do a deep dive into the world of anti anxiety medication. Rosie is a psychiatrist who deals with a lot of patients presenting with anxiety symptoms. She helps me to breakdown the different kinds of medication, how anti-depressants work in treating anxiety, what you need to know about the first few weeks on medication and what you need to know about coming off it if you decide to do so. We also chat about the stigma that very much exists around medication - I personally felt that taking medication was a sign of weakness and I still struggle with worrying what people might think about the fact that I'm still on it. Owning It: Why we fear public speaking and how to break it with Pat Divilly

This week I'm joined by Pat Divilly for a brilliant discussion around the topic of public speaking. It was his biggest fear, it's one of mine - STILL! - and I know it's something that affects so many readers of both Owning It and The Confidence Kit. Pat Divilly is an author, public speaker and all round legend - he takes complex ideas and articulates them in a way that is just so easy to digest and I feel we are on the very same page when it comes to things like acceptance and working with ourselves rather than against ourselves. Pat also shares his own story of anxiety, along with chats about imposter syndrome and as is always my goal - we share some very practical tips and exercises to get you feeling a little bit less afraid at the prospect of public speaking - even if that just means speaking up in a meeting or at a social event. Pat doesn't claim to be fearless, and neither do I, but despite our fears and anxieties we can still forge ahead. Enjoy! Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: How To Support Someone With Anxiety

Maybe you don't experience anxiety but maybe your partner or close friend or relative does; if so this is the episode for you. Barry is my husband and super reluctant podcast guest on this episode. He HATES having to do this but I damn well made him. We discuss the importance of normalising the anxiety, what to do and what not to do or say to someone who's struggling with anxiety and what it was like for him to go through this with me. He's not as much of a talker as I would be but I think his experience is important in the context of this series. I hope you enjoy it! Owning It: Understanding and normalising anxiety

In this episode I introduce the Assess and Address technique for anxiety, and am joined by clinical psychologist Dr Clare Kambamettu. She talks SO much sense around anxiety. We unpack it, getting a better understanding of why we feel it and how normal it is and exactly what's happening in our body. This episode will help you to get some clarity on why you might be experiencing anxiety, as well as reassuring you that whatever you're feeling, for whatever reason - it's VALID. We also discuss Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and why that works for anxiety. Enjoy. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Owning It: The reality of anxiety

In the first episode of the anxiety podcast, host and author Caroline Foran shares a raw, unfiltered and unsexy account of her experience of anxiety, from childhood right through to her mid 20s, when the you know what really hit the fan. Word of warning: this episode is pretty bleak - it's not sugar coated - but there is light at the end of the tunnel. This episode lays the foundation before moving on to understanding what anxiety is, and introducing her Assess and Address technique for owning your anxiety.  Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast.
