Flea and Tick Collars | Fatal Conveniences™

Have you ever considered the potential harm of flea and tick collars?  Having a pet, specifically a dog or a cat is a dream and desire of many people all around the world…until we realize the  different fleas and pests that enjoy living on the skin of our furry companions. To avoid this, most pet owners turn to flea and tick collars… While these collars are a popular method for preventing fleas and ticks from infesting our pets, recent studies have raised concerns about their safety. Many pet owners may not be aware of the risks associated with these collars, and my aim today is to shed light on this important issue. We'll explore the potential dangers of flea and tick collars, including the harmful chemicals they contain, their impact on pet health, the potential impact on human health, and how to choose safer alternatives.  My goal today is to provide you with a better understanding of the issue and what we can do to protect our pets. Whether you're a seasoned pet owner or considering getting a new companion, this episode will provide valuable information to keep your pets safe and healthy. How to Eat a Plant-Based Diet on A Budget | Toni Okamoto

A study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that about 65% of dieters return to their pre-dieting weight within three years, and up to 95% of people who lose weight through dieting regain it within five years. The reason why most people fail at diets is because we tend to take an all-or-nothing approach when it comes to taking on a new diet. While it may feel easy at first, it does become harder overtime as the initial motivation starts to die off. That’s why in this episode of the Darin Olien show, we explore adopting a plant-based diet as we would look at starting a new habit.   I’m joined by Toni Okamoto to discuss this topic of plant-based diets. We also discuss the double-edged sword of modern-day food — it’s ultra cheap, ultra-convenient, and ultra quick. But it’s also ultra-processed. While it may seem cheap to order fast food off the dollar menu, it comes out to a lot more money for a family to eat out than it would eat a homemade meal, especially over time.    Plus, we dive into the simple, small healthy swaps we can start to make that will eventually build up over time into a new pantry and ultimately the best practices for making the switch to a plant-based diet easier.    Toni Okamoto is a prominent author, speaker, and vegan lifestyle expert. She is the founder of Plant-Based on a Budget, a website that offers practical and affordable vegan recipes and resources. Toni's work has been featured in various media outlets, including Forbes, Reader's Digest, and NBC News. She is the author of several books, including "Plant-Based on a Budget," "The Friendly Vegan Cookbook," and "The Super Easy Vegan Slow Cooker Cookbook.”   Toni's journey towards a vegan lifestyle began in 2010 when she started eliminating animal products from her diet for ethical reasons. However, she found that many vegan options were expensive and time-consuming to prepare. To help others who were facing similar challenges, she started Plant-Based on a Budget in 2012 as a resource for affordable vegan meal planning.     What we discuss:   06:11: How dependent are we on our systems? 12:16: How did Toni’s dad impact her life? 17:09: Why did Toni start eating a plant-based diet? 21:12: What did Toni’s budget look like at first? 23:57: What differences did Toni feel from adopting this new diet? 26:18: How does Toni experience food sharing? 27:40: What’s the biggest obstacle to eating healthy? 35:11: How can you get started if you feel overwhelmed? 40:22: What is Tori’s philosophy for food prep? 45:50: What does Tori enjoy cooking right now? 50:50: How can you eat well and live well? 56:53: How to deal with people who question your choices?     Find more from Darin:   Website: Instagram: Book: Down to Earth:     Find more from Toni:   Website: Instagram: @plantbasedonabudget Book: Plant-Based on a Budget   More links:   Shop SafeSleeve and use code DARIN10 to save 10% on your purchase. Understanding the Game of Money (+ Becoming a Real Player) | Robert Breedlove

Money can be defined in many ways, but one thing that is commonly prevalent in every definition we can think of is the ability we should all have to keep it once we’ve earned it.    Unfortunately, this isn’t the case in today’s modern world where central banks are consistently printing money which steals our money’s value through inflation. The same goes for when governments are looking for financing, as they can at any time coerce this money out of their people or even outright seize it. It’s happened before in times of war and can always happen again, which is something we tend to forget.   The game of money may feel like a corrupted system we have no way out of. This was true, until about 14 years ago when decentralized currencies entered the game. Cryptocurrencies allow us to gain back the sovereignty over our money that the government, central banks, and chartered banks have taken away from us – and this is what we discuss in this episode the Darin Olien Show with guest, Robert Breedlove.   We discuss what the current central banking game is, where the corruption in the banking system stems from, the relationship between the government and the central bank, what we can do to cultivate more money, how to save the value of your money, and so much more.    Robert Breedlove is an entrepreneur, writer, and philosopher. He is an advocate of cryptocurrencies and particularly of Bitcoin. Breedlove is the founder of Bitcoin and finance consulting company Paralaxx Digital. He is also a YouTuber and the host of the “What is money” podcast.    Key Takeaways:   Fiat money is corrupted. The banking system is built on a process where people are entrusting these businesses with their money — or historically, gold. Once they deposited their valuables, the banks issue a contract that details the deposits they entrusted the banks with. Depositors are assured by this contract that they can redeem their assets at any time, without a sweat, in liquid form. But what most people don’t understand, however, is that this contract that supposedly protects your assets in the bank is routinely violated by the issuer of the contract themselves— the bank! The money you think is safely stored at the bank is being used by the bank itself at this very second to enrich their businesses. And guess what?! The government is in it too — especially when war is around the corner. Cryptocurrencies allow us to gain back the sovereignty over our money that the government, central banks, and chartered banks have taken away from us.    What we discuss:   08:08: Where is Robert living? 10:13: What is Darin’s relationship with money like? 12:15: How did Robert get into the history of the money pathway? 21:10: What is the current central banking game? 35:06: Where does the corruption in the banking system stem from? 42:45: What is the relationship between the government and the central bank? 49:16: What is money and what can you do to cultivate it? 58:29: How can you save the value of your money? 1:05:25: Where can you learn more about Robert?   To learn more about Robert:   YouTube: Robert Breedlove  Podcast: The “ What Is Money” Show Instagram: @breedlove_22   Thank you to our sponsor:   Shop Bite and use code DARIN20 to save 20% on your Bite subscription.

What Fast Fashion is Actually Doing to the World | Livia Firth

In this episode, we dive into the impact fast fashion has on the world with Liva Firth MBE.    The fast fashion and mass production that we all buy into has a dark side that many of us tend to ignore: the social impact. The people who are behind the curtains making these garments are working in poor conditions are abused daily, and often have their lives in danger due to negligence on the part of the companies who employ them. We play a part in this abuse as we continue to support these practices through our purchases. This bears the question: we wouldn’t let our neighbors live or work in such conditions, so why would we allow it (and support) for this to happen to people abroad? It’s time to reconsider which clothing companies we are supporting.   Young people are being brainwashed by these giant companies to keep spending their money on fast fashion. They are purposely targeted on social media platforms and are incited to spend more and consume more products from these particular brands. What makes it harder for them to give up these shopping practices is that they grew up with these brands, while older generations did not. Being aware of the marketing practices of these big companies such as SHEIN, for example, is the first step to not getting sucked into their world and participating in the fast-fashion phenomenon.    The environmental impact of such business practices in the clothing industry is huge. It is destructive to the environment through air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and landfill. By purchasing a bit costlier garments from companies that have more environmentally and human-friendly business practices, you will not only reduce landfill waste as the clothing will last longer but also reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Spending money on items made by companies who care about sustainability is not only great for the environment but for your savings account too.  Livia is is the co-founder and Creative Director of Eco-Age – the leading consulting and creative agency specialized in integrated sustainability, and founder of the Green Carpet Challenge (GCC). She is renowned for creating compelling frameworks and campaigns for environmental and social justice with global reach. #61 Fatal Conveniences™: Pet Food: Our Four-Legged Friends Deserve Better

You wouldn’t eat a bag of dried pellets made of meat by-products. So why would you feed it to your pet? Just like humans, animals need proper nutrition to thrive and live happy, healthy lives. Most store-bought dog and cat foods consist of low-quality meats, fillers and preservatives. Our four-legged friends are our family, and they deserve better. Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health, and the health of the environment around us. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so that you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make.  So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. Pet diseases have increased 80% in the last fifty years.  When most of the store-bought pet foods on the market are filled with junk, it’s not very hard to figure out why. Pet food manufacturers are constantly trying to make the food making process cheaper. So that means cheap ingredients and cheap packaging. All of that results in poor nutritional health for your furry friends. This one isn’t tough, guys. We need to make sure our pets are eating whole, nutritional foods. I choose a plant-based diet for myself, but I know a vegan diet isn’t best for my German Shepherd, Chaga. So I give him a fresh, mostly raw diet consisting of 75% meat and 25% veggies and ancient grains. I’ll give you some tips on how to use fresh food for your dog and some fresh pet food companies that I love. Our pets are our babies, so let’s make sure we’re giving them the best life possible. Across the world, rivers are drying up, and once lush green lands are transforming into deserts. To reverse the destruction of our planet, more people need to become aware of the desperate need for more trees.  WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. I’m Darin Olien, the “superfood hunter.” On this podcast, you’ll hear honest conversations with extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same. We want to save the planet. So we’re going to try, one conversation at a time. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world while learning new angles on health and nutrition, you’re at the right place. Sadhguru’s work has touched the lives of people all over the world. Sadhguru is a yogi, a mystic, and a New York Times best-selling author. Once named one of India’s 50 most influential people, Sadhguru’s work spans various causes all across the planet. He’s been an influential voice at major global forums, including the United Nations World Headquarters and the World Economic Forum. He covers a wide range of topics such as socio-economic development, leadership, education, and spirituality at these forums. One of his many significant accomplishments is founding the Isha Foundation, a non-profit organization run by over 11 million volunteers worldwide. Sadhguru is extremely knowledgeable about so many different things that affect our planet. In this conversation, we focus on his passion for preserving Native American culture and his initiative to heal the earth by planting trees. Inspired by what he calls “a spiritual encounter with a Native American spirit,” Sadhguru embarked on a 10,000-mile motorcycle journey across 16 states. His goal was to explore a 40,000-year-old culture that is disappearing every day. Sadhguru doesn’t just dip his toes into a mission. He fully immerses himself in it. And his wisdom and compassion compel others to do the same, which makes him such a powerful force to bring real, actionable change to the world. With his initiative, Project Greenhands, 42.1 million trees were planted in farmland in South India. I could talk to Sadhguru for hours, and I wish I could have since there was so much we couldn’t cover. However, if you’re not familiar with him or his work, this is an excellent introduction of what can be done when, as he says, “you have ecology in your heart.” Also in this episode: Sadhguru’s motorcycle journey across the states What drew him to Native American culture Little known facts about Native American culture Project Greenhands India’s farmers Why the world’s rivers are drying up Trees, trees, trees How to get involved How the world would change if everyone ate plant-based diets Links: Inner Engineering - Project GreenHands - Sadhguru’s Website - Twitter @SadhguruJV Facebook: @Sadhguru Instagram: @Sadhguru Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at For amazing skin using an all-natural serum made with wild-harvested ingredients, get Caldera Lab’s “The Good”, the only skincare product I use. #59 Fatal Conveniences™: Lip Balm & Chapsticks: A Vicious Cycle of Dry Lips

Are you among the nearly 66% of the population that uses lip balm or chapstick every day? If you are, you may actually be drying your lips out more instead of moisturizing them. Although you think you’re doing something good for your skin, you’re contributing to a vicious cycle of dry lips. Americans spend $200 Million on Lip Balm and Chapstick every year. You probably have some lip balm within arm’s reach right now. You can find tubes of lip balm in every bathroom, nightstand, kitchen junk drawer, purse and jacket pocket of pretty much every American household. We’ve been obsessively buying this stuff for almost a century. We think it helps moisturize the sensitive skin on and around our lips, but does it? The truth is, layering waxy substances on your lips creates a moisture barrier. So although they may feel soft and moisturized, you’re preventing your body’s natural process of shedding dead skin and creating new, healthy cells. Then when your lip balm or chapstick wears off, your lips feel dry, and you apply more. This essentially stops your lips from regenerating new skin.  You need to let those lips breathe! But hey, I know certain conditions call for some sort of protection or healing for your lips. But you need to be aware of which ingredients are going to do more damage than good. I’ll give you some healthy, safe alternatives, as well as tips for things you can do to keep your lips moisturized naturally. So, ditch that Cherry ChapStick, guys, and listen up. It’s not just about what we eat and drink, it’s about how we interact with the people around us. It’s about our attitude towards the world, and how we nurture our emotional health. Marta is full of a massive amount of scientifically backed information and insights, I really had a blast with this conversation. She breaks down the biology behind friendships and relationships, and why they really are key to our quality of life. We chat about hormones, microbiomes, and why everyone should have a dog like my Chaga. We’re not talking about superfoods in this one, guys, but it’s just as important.  Other topics in this episode: The backstory of Growing Young Why you need to find your tribe The science behind the human/dog bond How the pandemic has tested us Exchanging microbes How having friends makes you live longer Can an introvert learn to be more extroverted? #57 Fatal Conveniences™: Tea Bags: Are They Safe?

Tea is an amazing way to utilize the health benefits of plants. I drink tea daily, and you should, too. But do we really want to soak a bag made of who-knows-what in hot water and drink it?  Folks, it’s time to talk about store-bought tea bags. Most store-bought tea bags are made of layered plastic. Yes, your healthy green, black and other herbal teas come in a bag full of toxic plastic. Then you’re seeping this plastic bag into hot water as its toxins leak into the liquid. You’re drinking plastic tea! This is terrible, guys. Tea is a healthy product. And we’re transforming it into something unhealthy. Why? Because it’s cheaper for companies to make a leak-free bag out of plastic than other materials. This is just silly. In this segment, I’m going to break down how and why tea bags are made with toxic plastic and what it’s doing to your body.  I don’t want you to stop drinking tea, I just want you to be aware of better alternatives. I prefer using a stainless steel mesh tea ball or just making loose leaf teas. But there are some amazing tea companies out there making safe tea bags, so I’ll tell you all about those, too. Listen up, guys, it’s tea time. #56 Naveen Jain on Taking Control of Your Gut Health

When it comes to improving your health, focusing on whole, natural foods is, of course, better for everyone. However, there is no such thing as universally healthy food. The truth is food affects different bodies differently. What’s good for me, could be causing problems for you, and visa versa. By understanding your personal gut health, you can be the one in control of whether or not you get sick. Naveen Jain wants to change the world by putting you in control of your gut health. Naveen is an entrepreneur driven by the desire to make the world a better place. Every single one of the seven companies he’s founded was created for that purpose. His latest venture, Viome, is a uniquely designed biology company set on “making illness optional.” By ordering a test kit from Viome, you’re able to learn key information about your gut health that will change your whole approach to preventing disease. Each personalized test measures your overall gut health by measuring your gut microbiome, mitochondria, and immune cell function. Your test results provide you precise nutritional recommendations geared to change the trajectory of your health. In this episode, Naveen breaks down why it’s so incredibly important to individualize nutrition. He, like me, is a huge believer in food as medicine. However, he knows that diet is not a one size fits all kind of thing. We have to understand our own biological make-up to know what kinds of foods work best for our bodies. I really hope you all pay close attention to this episode and consider ordering your own test. No, Naveen isn’t a doctor. He’s what he calls an “outsider” to the medical-industrial complex. But with the help of experts all over the world, he’s developed this amazing company, and this amazing way to help us all take control of our own health. Other topics in this episode: Naveen’s driving force Why it’s better to be an outsider in your industry Understanding human biology at the molecular level DNA and RNA Personalized Nutrition The hypocrisy of the Hippocratic Oath The messed up incentives of the medical industry How the Viome test works The worst kind of diet vs. the best kind of diet for gut health Why you should always take care of your gums Links: Naveen on LinkedIn Naveen on Instagram Viome on Instagram Viome  - Be sure to use code OLIEN20 for $10 off your first purchase of tests! #55 Fatal Conveniences™: Crayons: Safe or Toxic?

Everyone has fond childhood memories revolving around crayons. These colorful waxy sticks represent hours of creative fun. I was an avid coloring book fan, and I can’t even tell you how many boxes of crayons I went through as a kid. No one wants to have these cherished memories tainted, but are crayons safe or toxic? And what are they doing to our planet? Between 45,000 and 75,000 lbs of broken crayons are discarded in US landfills every year. This one is tough for me, because I really don’t want to bash crayons. I love crayons! We all did. And I’m sure if you have kids, you have multiple boxes of these colorful things all over the house. So I’ll just cut to the chase. Crayons consist of paraffin, which is a petroleum, crude oil by-product. And lab tests show some crayon brands are full of toxins like lead and even asbestos.  In this segment, I break down the uncomfortable truths about this kid-favorite drawing tool. It’s not just our kids we need to worry about. Unfortunately, these things are ending up in our landfills and waterways. But it’s not all bad news. Some brands are safer than others. Like most things, the cheaper it is, the more toxic it probably is. Thankfully, there are plenty of environmentally friendly, safe alternatives. And I’ll be sure to give you plenty of resources to find those as well. So don’t worry guys, you don’t have to hide those coloring books. Let’s just make a conscious effort to be aware of what’s in our kids’ favorite crafting supplies. I’ve traveled the world and witnessed vibrant cultures enduring difficult circumstances - with the environment around them being ravaged by deforestation, lack of food and limited access to clean water. In this podcast, we’ll explore how we can leave a healthier planet for generations to come, while diving deep into some topics that others avoid. Let’s create a more sustainable planet for every creature living in it. I hope you’ll listen to The Darin Olien Show with an open mind, an open heart, and a fire in your soul to do some deep diving.
