#61 Fatal Conveniences™: Pet Food: Our Four-Legged Friends Deserve Better

You wouldn’t eat a bag of dried pellets made of meat by-products. So why would you feed it to your pet? Just like humans, animals need proper nutrition to thrive and live happy, healthy lives. Most store-bought dog and cat foods consist of low-quality meats, fillers and preservatives. Our four-legged friends are our family, and they deserve better. Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health, and the health of the environment around us. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so that you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make.  So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. Pet diseases have increased 80% in the last fifty years.  When most of the store-bought pet foods on the market are filled with junk, it’s not very hard to figure out why. Pet food manufacturers are constantly trying to make the food making process cheaper. So that means cheap ingredients and cheap packaging. All of that results in poor nutritional health for your furry friends. This one isn’t tough, guys. We need to make sure our pets are eating whole, nutritional foods. I choose a plant-based diet for myself, but I know a vegan diet isn’t best for my German Shepherd, Chaga. So I give him a fresh, mostly raw diet consisting of 75% meat and 25% veggies and ancient grains. I’ll give you some tips on how to use fresh food for your dog and some fresh pet food companies that I love. Our pets are our babies, so let’s make sure we’re giving them the best life possible. #60 Sadhguru on Planting Trees and Opening Minds

Across the world, rivers are drying up, and once lush green lands are transforming into deserts. To reverse the destruction of our planet, more people need to become aware of the desperate need for more trees.  WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. I’m Darin Olien, the “superfood hunter.” On this podcast, you’ll hear honest conversations with extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same. We want to save the planet. So we’re going to try, one conversation at a time. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world while learning new angles on health and nutrition, you’re at the right place. Sadhguru’s work has touched the lives of people all over the world. Sadhguru is a yogi, a mystic, and a New York Times best-selling author. Once named one of India’s 50 most influential people, Sadhguru’s work spans various causes all across the planet. He’s been an influential voice at major global forums, including the United Nations World Headquarters and the World Economic Forum. He covers a wide range of topics such as socio-economic development, leadership, education, and spirituality at these forums. One of his many significant accomplishments is founding the Isha Foundation, a non-profit organization run by over 11 million volunteers worldwide. Sadhguru is extremely knowledgeable about so many different things that affect our planet. In this conversation, we focus on his passion for preserving Native American culture and his initiative to heal the earth by planting trees. Inspired by what he calls “a spiritual encounter with a Native American spirit,” Sadhguru embarked on a 10,000-mile motorcycle journey across 16 states. His goal was to explore a 40,000-year-old culture that is disappearing every day. Sadhguru doesn’t just dip his toes into a mission. He fully immerses himself in it. And his wisdom and compassion compel others to do the same, which makes him such a powerful force to bring real, actionable change to the world. With his initiative, Project Greenhands, 42.1 million trees were planted in farmland in South India. I could talk to Sadhguru for hours, and I wish I could have since there was so much we couldn’t cover. However, if you’re not familiar with him or his work, this is an excellent introduction of what can be done when, as he says, “you have ecology in your heart.” Also in this episode: Sadhguru’s motorcycle journey across the states What drew him to Native American culture Little known facts about Native American culture Project Greenhands India’s farmers Why the world’s rivers are drying up Trees, trees, trees How to get involved How the world would change if everyone ate plant-based diets Links: Inner Engineering - https://www.innerengineering.com/ Project GreenHands - https://www.ishaoutreach.org/en/project-greenhands Sadhguru’s Website - https://isha.sadhguru.org/us/en Twitter @SadhguruJV Facebook: @Sadhguru Instagram: @Sadhguru Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com For amazing skin using an all-natural serum made with wild-harvested ingredients, get Caldera Lab’s “The Good”, the only skincare product I use. #59 Fatal Conveniences™: Lip Balm & Chapsticks: A Vicious Cycle of Dry Lips

Are you among the nearly 66% of the population that uses lip balm or chapstick every day? If you are, you may actually be drying your lips out more instead of moisturizing them. Although you think you’re doing something good for your skin, you’re contributing to a vicious cycle of dry lips. Americans spend $200 Million on Lip Balm and Chapstick every year. You probably have some lip balm within arm’s reach right now. You can find tubes of lip balm in every bathroom, nightstand, kitchen junk drawer, purse and jacket pocket of pretty much every American household. We’ve been obsessively buying this stuff for almost a century. We think it helps moisturize the sensitive skin on and around our lips, but does it? The truth is, layering waxy substances on your lips creates a moisture barrier. So although they may feel soft and moisturized, you’re preventing your body’s natural process of shedding dead skin and creating new, healthy cells. Then when your lip balm or chapstick wears off, your lips feel dry, and you apply more. This essentially stops your lips from regenerating new skin.  You need to let those lips breathe! But hey, I know certain conditions call for some sort of protection or healing for your lips. But you need to be aware of which ingredients are going to do more damage than good. I’ll give you some healthy, safe alternatives, as well as tips for things you can do to keep your lips moisturized naturally. So, ditch that Cherry ChapStick, guys, and listen up. We all tend to stress about finding the perfect diet or exercise plan to keep us as healthy as possible. But there’s so much more to it than that. To keep your body healthy, you have to focus on other aspects of your life as well. What if I told you that kindness, connection, and love have just as much to do with your health as diet and exercise? WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. I’m Darin Olien, the “superfood hunter.” On this podcast, you’ll hear honest conversations with extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same. We want to save the planet. So we’re going to try, one conversation at a time. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world while learning new angles on health and nutrition, you’re at the right place. Marta Zaraska found the Fountain of Youth. And it’s probably not what you think. Marta is an incredibly knowledgeable science writer and journalist, published in the Washington Post, Scientific American, and The Atlantic among many others. Her new book Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism, and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100 quickly became one of my favorites. It’s a research-driven look at the power of human connection and attitude, and how they biologically drive our existence.  In this episode, Marta and I chat about all the things that some health gurus seem to forget. It’s not just about what we eat and drink, it’s about how we interact with the people around us. It’s about our attitude towards the world, and how we nurture our emotional health. Marta is full of a massive amount of scientifically backed information and insights, I really had a blast with this conversation. She breaks down the biology behind friendships and relationships, and why they really are key to our quality of life. We chat about hormones, microbiomes, and why everyone should have a dog like my Chaga. We’re not talking about superfoods in this one, guys, but it’s just as important.  Other topics in this episode: The backstory of Growing Young Why you need to find your tribe The science behind the human/dog bond How the pandemic has tested us Exchanging microbes How having friends makes you live longer Can an introvert learn to be more extroverted? #57 Fatal Conveniences™: Tea Bags: Are They Safe?

Tea is an amazing way to utilize the health benefits of plants. I drink tea daily, and you should, too. But do we really want to soak a bag made of who-knows-what in hot water and drink it?  Folks, it’s time to talk about store-bought tea bags. Most store-bought tea bags are made of layered plastic. Yes, your healthy green, black and other herbal teas come in a bag full of toxic plastic. Then you’re seeping this plastic bag into hot water as its toxins leak into the liquid. You’re drinking plastic tea! This is terrible, guys. Tea is a healthy product. And we’re transforming it into something unhealthy. Why? Because it’s cheaper for companies to make a leak-free bag out of plastic than other materials. This is just silly. In this segment, I’m going to break down how and why tea bags are made with toxic plastic and what it’s doing to your body.  I don’t want you to stop drinking tea, I just want you to be aware of better alternatives. I prefer using a stainless steel mesh tea ball or just making loose leaf teas. But there are some amazing tea companies out there making safe tea bags, so I’ll tell you all about those, too. Listen up, guys, it’s tea time. #56 Naveen Jain on Taking Control of Your Gut Health

When it comes to improving your health, focusing on whole, natural foods is, of course, better for everyone. However, there is no such thing as universally healthy food. The truth is food affects different bodies differently. What’s good for me, could be causing problems for you, and visa versa. By understanding your personal gut health, you can be the one in control of whether or not you get sick. Naveen Jain wants to change the world by putting you in control of your gut health. Naveen is an entrepreneur driven by the desire to make the world a better place. Every single one of the seven companies he’s founded was created for that purpose. His latest venture, Viome, is a uniquely designed biology company set on “making illness optional.” By ordering a test kit from Viome, you’re able to learn key information about your gut health that will change your whole approach to preventing disease. Each personalized test measures your overall gut health by measuring your gut microbiome, mitochondria, and immune cell function. Your test results provide you precise nutritional recommendations geared to change the trajectory of your health. In this episode, Naveen breaks down why it’s so incredibly important to individualize nutrition. He, like me, is a huge believer in food as medicine. However, he knows that diet is not a one size fits all kind of thing. We have to understand our own biological make-up to know what kinds of foods work best for our bodies. I really hope you all pay close attention to this episode and consider ordering your own test. No, Naveen isn’t a doctor. He’s what he calls an “outsider” to the medical-industrial complex. But with the help of experts all over the world, he’s developed this amazing company, and this amazing way to help us all take control of our own health. Other topics in this episode: Naveen’s driving force Why it’s better to be an outsider in your industry Understanding human biology at the molecular level DNA and RNA Personalized Nutrition The hypocrisy of the Hippocratic Oath The messed up incentives of the medical industry How the Viome test works The worst kind of diet vs. the best kind of diet for gut health Why you should always take care of your gums Links: Naveen on LinkedIn Naveen on Instagram Viome on Instagram Viome  - Be sure to use code OLIEN20 for $10 off your first purchase of tests! #55 Fatal Conveniences™: Crayons: Safe or Toxic?

Everyone has fond childhood memories revolving around crayons. These colorful waxy sticks represent hours of creative fun. I was an avid coloring book fan, and I can’t even tell you how many boxes of crayons I went through as a kid. No one wants to have these cherished memories tainted, but are crayons safe or toxic? And what are they doing to our planet? Between 45,000 and 75,000 lbs of broken crayons are discarded in US landfills every year. This one is tough for me, because I really don’t want to bash crayons. I love crayons! We all did. And I’m sure if you have kids, you have multiple boxes of these colorful things all over the house. So I’ll just cut to the chase. Crayons consist of paraffin, which is a petroleum, crude oil by-product. And lab tests show some crayon brands are full of toxins like lead and even asbestos.  In this segment, I break down the uncomfortable truths about this kid-favorite drawing tool. It’s not just our kids we need to worry about. Unfortunately, these things are ending up in our landfills and waterways. But it’s not all bad news. Some brands are safer than others. Like most things, the cheaper it is, the more toxic it probably is. Thankfully, there are plenty of environmentally friendly, safe alternatives. And I’ll be sure to give you plenty of resources to find those as well. So don’t worry guys, you don’t have to hide those coloring books. Let’s just make a conscious effort to be aware of what’s in our kids’ favorite crafting supplies. #54 Dr. Jerry Tennant on The Voltage in Our Bodies

I want you all to envision using a blow dryer to style your hair. If there’s not enough voltage hitting your dryer, it’s not going to work. However, too much voltage and sparks will fly. Believe it or not, our bodies work the same way. Every muscle is essentially a battery. Without the right amount of charge, nothing is going to work properly. Dr. Jerry Tennant wants you to understand the voltage in your body. As a world-renowned physician, international author, and integrative health practitioner, Dr. Jerry Tennant, MD, MD(H), PScD knows his way around the human body. He is a Harvard-trained ophthalmologist and has performed complicated eye surgeries on thousands of patients all over the world. He is also the founder of The Tennant Institute for Integrative Medicine and was named one of the “Top 20 Alternative Doctors in America”. It was his world-renowned talent in eye surgery that ultimately led to him contracting three different viruses in his brain. His health began to rapidly deteriorate which forced him into early retirement. For the next seven years, he spent most of his days sleeping. When he was awake, he was in a mental fog, unable to do much of anything. Top doctors all over the country gave him no hope, telling him there was no cure for his illnesses. He was left to figure out the answers himself. Then Dr. Jerry discovered the concept of voltage, and everything changed. He learned that chronic disease occurs when the body loses its ability to make new cells that work. Through his research, he began to understand that loss of voltage in cells is directly related to the body’s inability to heal. As he studied this information, he began to heal his own body naturally. His career took a natural turn as well because this information has to be shared. In this episode, Dr. Tennant breaks the very complicated concept of the voltage in human bodies. It’s very likely that this is the first time you’re hearing about this stuff, so it can be a bit overwhelming. I highly recommend heading over to Dr. Jerry’s website after listening to this episode and checking out his videos on the subject. There’s so much information to process, guys. But I promise once you catch on to how this stuff works, so many things will fall into place in your mind about your own body and health. I had like a million lightbulb moments about my own body once I stumbled upon his work. For example, did you know getting your wisdom teeth removed eliminates a key circuit connection to your brain? We talk about this and many other unknown mind-body connections. You’re not going to want to miss this one, that’s a promise. #53 Fatal Conveniences™: Carpet: Walking on Chemicals

It sure feels nice to swing your legs out of bed in the morning and rest your bare feet on a soft squishy carpet. But have you ever thought about the kind of things your sensitive skin is absorbing when you do that? Or what might be lurking between those synthetic fibers? The truth is we may be sacrificing our health for the comfort of rugs and carpeting. Carpets account for 70% of the flooring in the United States. Even if you have tile or hardwood flooring in your home, you probably have at least a small rug or patch of carpeting somewhere. I had a throw rug on my yurt floor until I did the research for this segment. Now it’s gone, because I was disgusted at the danger lurking in these plush, fluffy things we use for comfort in our homes.  Nearly all the carpets in the US are made from synthetic fibers. These fibers are full of toxins that off-gas into our homes and fill the air with irritants and chemicals. These toxins are doing damage to our bodies. Not only that, rugs can be a breeding ground for bacteria, allergens and mold that our pets and kids are crawling around in and breathing in. In this segment, I go through the different toxins and VOCs that are hiding in your carpet. We go through the history of carpeting in the United States and why so many families choose it over any other flooring. And don’t worry, I also give you some options to wean yourself off of this fatal convenience. And I give you some alternative options to choose from. I know, carpet is soft and warm to walk on, and it looks nice. But like I always say, it’s about making small changes in your home, and your life, so that you get used to better, safer ways of living. And I think hardwood floors look classier anyway. #52 Shawn Stevenson on How We’re Made of the Food We Eat

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “You are what you eat.” Well, I don’t think we realize just how true that is. Unfortunately, our society has made it nearly impossible to focus on whole, clean foods. Instead, cheap, processed, empty-calorie foods are plentiful. But when you understand that, literally, every bite you take becomes your body, it’s easier to make the necessary changes for optimal health. Shawn Stevenson was told at 20 years old that he had an incurable bone disease. Shawn Stevenson is the author of the international bestselling book Sleep Smarter, and the newly released book Eat Smarter. He’s also the creator and host of The Model Health Show, one of the top Health podcasts in the United States. Shawn graduated from the University of Missouri- St. Louis after studying business, biology and nutritional science. He went on to found Advanced Integrative Health Alliance. This amazing company provides health and wellness services for people and organizations all over the world. Shawn’s work in the wellness sector has led to features in Forbes, The New York Times, Muscle & Fitness, ABC, ESPN and many more. But before all this success, Shawn was just a kid growing up in Missouri with little access to healthy food. Surrounded by every fast food franchise you can imagine, and a hardworking mom that had to work night shifts to keep him fed on whatever they could afford, he just didn’t know any other way. That’s why when he was diagnosed with Degenerative Bone Disease at 20 years old, he believed the doctor when he said there was nothing he could do. He had no idea his poor diet was inhibiting his body’s ability to heal. How would he? This isn’t something they teach in school. After popping pills, losing sleep night after night and just feeling incredibly defeated, he finally asked himself the question that changed everything. “What can I do to get better?” Suddenly, his entire attitude and perspective shifted. His health wasn’t in the doctors’ hands anymore. It was in his. That was the beginning of his journey into discovering the amazing healing power of whole foods.  In this conversation, Shawn breaks down how everything we eat shapes how our body functions. In his straightforward, sometimes sarcastic, always genuine way, he gets to the very heart of why every single person should care more about how we think about food in this country. We get into how government subsidies have made cheap processed food affordable, while the good healthy stuff remains out of reach to those that need it most. And Shawn tells us all about his new book and the amazing campaigns he has planned for it. This is a great episode for anyone looking to dig a little deeper into healing their bodies with food. #51 Fatal Conveniences™: Petroleum Jelly: Skincare Courtesy of the Oil Industry

Petroleum jelly products have been part of the American skincare market for 100 years. It’s been marketed as a makeup remover, a skin moisturizer and even a salve for cuts and burns. Even if you think of Vaseline as something your grandmother used, you’d be surprised how many products still contain petroleum jelly. But what is this stuff really made of? And is it safe? Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health, and the health of the environment around us. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make.  So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. 1 out of every 14 cosmetic products on the market contain petroleum jelly. When we think of petroleum jelly, we think of Vaseline. And yes, Vaseline is made of petroleum jelly. But there are so many other products in the stores containing this stuff as well. Lipsticks, lip balms, lotions, moisturizers, conditioners and ointments all have been known to contain a form of petroleum jelly in their ingredients.  So if it’s been around forever, it should be ok, right? Well, if you’ve listened to these segments before, you probably know what I’m going to say. No, it’s not ok. Petroleum jelly, also known as white petroleum, mineral oil, or soft paraffin, is a toxic, crude oil by-product. Do you really want something produced by the oil industry all up in your face? It’s been marketed for decades as a soothing, healing, moisturizing cure-all, but believe me, it’s anything but. In this segment, I go over what petroleum jelly is made of and what it’s doing to your body. Remember anything that goes on your body, goes in your body. And I promise you, you don’t want crude oil by-products in your body. I’ll go over the studies linking vaseline to cancer and skin infections, and I’ll give you plenty of alternatives to use instead. Stop slathering this stuff on your skin, guys. Or using it “down there”!  It’s doing the opposite of hydrating, and it’s leaving dangerous toxins in its wake. #50 Dr. Uma Naidoo on Understanding How Food Affects Your Brain

Have you ever wondered why you start to feel really crappy after eating a fast-food value meal? Sure, the fats and sugars are affecting your digestive system, but what’s happening in your brain? If we started paying attention to how certain foods affect our moods and emotional health, maybe it would be easier to change our diets. Dr. Uma Naidoo explores the connection between nutrition and our brains. Dr. Naidoo is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist, professional chef, and Nutrition specialist. Her niche work is in Nutritional Psychiatry, where she focuses on nutrition and diet to aid and assist her patients’ mental health. She is considered a pioneer in her field, and frankly, I wish there were more like her. Her book, This Is Your Brain On Food, is an enlightening guide to both the negative and positive effects foods have on your brain and psychology.  In this conversation, Dr. Uma breaks down her methodology when trying to get people to see the power nutrition has on their bodies. She is, like me, a huge believer in encouraging small tweaks instead of drastic lifestyle changes. Dr. Uma explains what “body intelligence” is and why we all need to focus on how foods make our bodies feel. She explains the connection between nutrition and depression and anxiety and gives us plenty of examples of what foods affect our mood. This is one of my favorite episodes because Dr. Naidoo and I are so in sync with our philosophies on food and well-being. We might even team up to convince the world to focus on their fiber intake instead of being obsessed with protein! If you’re looking for ways to make small changes in your diet that will amount to big changes in how you feel, you definitely want to tune in to this one.   Other topics in this episode: Eating the rainbow Dr. Uma’s lightbulb moment about how to approach nutrition with her patients Why it all should start with your sugar intake Simple connections that can shift your perspective on nutrition The main culprit of lousy nutrition in a fast-food diet The importance of fermented foods and probiotics The power of Tumeric What foods trigger depression and anxiety The danger of quitting anything “cold turkey” Body Intelligence Fiber’s role in the body   Links & Resources: Dr. Uma Naidoo Website Dr. Uma Naidoo on Instagram Dr. Uma Naidoo on Facebook Dr. Uma Naidoo on LinkedIn Book - This Is Your Brain On Food Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com For amazing skin using an all-natural serum made with wild-harvested ingredients, get Caldera Lab’s “The Good”, the only skincare product I use. #49 Fatal Conveniences™: Flame Retardants: Chemical Protection?

House fires are terrifying. Believe me, I know. So trying to protect our home and family from fires seems entirely understandable. However, chemical flame retardants are not only toxic to our health, but don’t even offer the protection they claim. What is going on, guys?! 5-10% of the total weight of your living room couch is made up of chemical flame retardants. Yup, you read that correctly. These toxic chemicals not only exist in your furniture and mattresses, but they’re floating around your entire home. These toxic chemicals like Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) are seeping in the air in our home because of off-gassing. Chemical particles can be found on our carpets, on the walls and even in the dust floating in the air. It’s not just furniture and mattresses these flame retardants are in either. They’re also used in electronics and even kids’ car seats and boosters. But that’s not the worst of it. In studies, these flame retardant chemicals were found in nearly all of the test subjects’ bodies. They were found in blood, fat, breast tissue and even breastmilk. These toxins aren’t just hanging out in our bodies, they’re causing real, permanent damage to our health. They disrupt our hormone production, mess with our thyroids and even cause cancer. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the havoc their wreaking on our bodies. If you have kids or pets at home, this is even more disturbing. So it’s a small price to pay to save us from fires, right? If these products help us to get out of our homes during a fire and to safety quicker, then it’s worth it. Right? Wrong! They don’t even do what they claim to do! Studies done by fire experts show that flame retardants do not make fires easier to escape, but they actually increase deadly gases during combustion. So they’re killing us two ways? How is this possible? In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I’ll explain how we got to this point, and why it all goes back to Big Tobacco. I’ll go over just what chemicals are used in these products and why they’re so dangerous. And of course, I’ll give ways to rid your homes of this stuff and healthy safe alternatives to buy instead. This one got me incredibly fired up (pun intended) and I hope it motivates you to look a little closer at the organizations and agencies that are supposed to be protecting us. Other info in this segment: The items in your home that contain flame retardants What are they made from? #48 Rodrigo Figueiredo on The Journey of Barùkas

Starting a business isn’t just about making money and becoming successful. Sure, it can be a little bit about those things. But, ultimately, the biggest reward of entrepreneurship is when you’re able to help others, as well as yourself. And the journey is never easy. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. I’m Darin Olien, the “superfood hunter”. On this podcast, you’ll hear honest conversations with extraordinary people that inspire me. Rodrigo Figueiredo is helping me save the world with nuts. If you’ve listened to this show before, or follow me on social media, then you’ve probably heard of Barùkas. Rodrigo is the guy who introduced me to this superfood, and the reason why I am a fellow co-founder of this amazing company. The journey of Barùkas as a business is quite the story. Rodrigo is a Brazilian American who spent many years in the corporate world. He was working as a business manager in the big Oil, Gas, and Mining industries, and making good money doing so. But something was missing. And it was getting harder and harder to justify working in industries that he knew had immensely negative impacts on the environment. Not to mention the lack of personal fulfillment it provided. After randomly adding me on Facebook years prior, a trip to a remote area of the Cerrado in Brazil made him think of me. Maybe this California surfer dude (me) could help him realize his dream of starting a company to bring sustainability to a community, and a superfood to the world. And the rest, as they say, is history. In this conversation, Rodrigo and I talk about the struggles and triumphs we’ve had building up the Barùkas brand. We talk about the beautiful part of the world these delicious nuts are from and the incredible people that facilitate their growth. This isn’t an infomercial for Barùkas, guys. It’s the true story behind a couple of guys who want to make a positive impact on the planet while building a sustainable business. I can’t wait for you to hear more about Rodrigo and the Barùkas nuts story. #47 Fatal Conveniences™: Over The Counter Anti-Inflammatories: Painful Pain Relief

Pain can be incredibly inconvenient. But what we seem to forget is that pain is our body’s way of alerting us to a problem. Or it can be part of the natural healing process. This is not to say that chronic pain can’t be incredibly debilitating. However, we need to stop reaching for that cheap bottle of over the counter anti-inflammatories. They are doing more harm than good. Americans spend $50 Billion a year on Over the Counter (OTC) Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) When I say OTC NSAIDs, I’m talking about common painkillers like Advil (ibuprofen), Aleve, Naproxen and high-dose aspirin. All these drugs are easily found in pharmacies, grocery stores and even gas stations. They’re so commonly used that many of you probably have them stored in your purses or backpacks right now, just in case. We are trained to pop a couple of these pills at the first sign of a headache or any sort of pain. It’s as American as apple pie.  I’m here to tell you that this is a bad habit we need to break. These meds are doing way more harm than good. They’re tearing apart our stomach lining, messing with our body’s ability to produce antibodies and conditioning us to treat symptoms instead of addressing pain at the source. In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, we go into the history of NSAIDs and how they’ve become our drug of choice. I get into the awful truth behind what they’re doing to our health. And of course, I give you a plethora of alternative options when it comes to pain relief. I’m not trying to knock the seriousness of chronic pain, guys. I just want you to deal with it in ways that aren’t counterproductive to your health. Take back your power, and turn to plants. Other topics in this segment: The number one cause of bleeding stomach ulcers NSAIDs and the heart Pain’s role in healing The history of Bayer and big Pharma The risk to water and the environment from NSAIDs The reason for inflammation NSAIDs and the immune system The risks of NSAIDs on pregnancy and fertility Natural anti-inflammatory foods Healthy ways to deal with pain CBD Links & Resources: History of Felix Hoffman Facts about Bayer Effects of Nonsteroidal  Anti-Inflammatories at the Molecular Level FDA Beefs up Warning on NSAIDs NSAIDs: How Dangerous Are They For Your Heart? #46 Dr. David Gazzaniga on The Truth About Pain Management

According to the CDC, 128 Americans overdose on opioids every day. And millions more are addicted. When you go to the doctor seeking pain relief, you expect what you get to be safe and effective. But the truth is, in many cases, prescription pain medication is neither. So what are the alternative options for pain management? WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. I’m Darin Olien, the “superfood hunter.” On this podcast, you’ll hear honest conversations with extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same. We want to save the planet. So we’re going to try, one conversation at a time. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world while learning new angles on health and nutrition, you’re at the right place. Dr. David Gazzaniga has treated some of the most powerful athletes in the world. Dr. David is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, specifically sports-related injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. He grew up in Orange County, California, and left to play football for Dartmouth College. He continued at Dartmouth for medical school. His career in sports medicine started as serving as a team doctor for the New York Jets. Today, Dr. Gazzaniga is the Head Team Physician for the LA Chargers. In this episode, David and I discuss how treating sports injuries in football players is inherently tricky, due to their sheer power and force. These big NFL guys experience pain differently than we do, believe me. But even giant sports heroes feel pain, and they seek the advice of experts like Dr. Gazzaniga when doing so. This is where things get interesting. David is ever-aware of the dangers of opioids. And in this episode, he gets into the concerns he has about pain management procedures in his industry. Dr.Gazzaniga wants things to change, and he’s at the forefront of studies and research that could do just that soon. Among the pain management solutions we discuss, CBD is a big one. The doc breaks down just how CBD works in the human body, and why it’s not as readily available as it should be. He fills me in on some of the ways the NFL is changing their approach to pain management. And we talk about why we all need to be more aware of what causes pain, and how we can effectively manage it in healthy, safe ways. This is a good one, guys. If you’re curious about CBD, or just want to learn some cool stuff from a cool doctor, tune in. #45 Fatal Conveniences™: Sports Drinks: Hydrating Your Body With Sugar?

Sugary, colorful sports and hydration drinks have been marketed to us since the ’60s. They help you run faster, play harder and achieve your ultimate game. Don’t they? Well, no, not really. In fact, pumping your body full of sugar is counterproductive to living a fit and healthy lifestyle. But we need electrolytes, so what should we be hydrating with after a workout? Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make.  So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. Our body needs electrolytes. But is Gatorade the answer? No, it’s really not. Studies show that drinks heavy in sugar and artificial dyes can lead to diabetes, obesity and a whole list of other health issues. But yes, when it comes to extreme athletes, sports drinks have been known to help with endurance and performance. But what about the average person? And aren't there healthier ways to get electrolytes and hydration? Yes, there certainly is. In this segment, I go over the confusing research regarding sports and hydration drinks like Gatorade and Powerade. It turns out that studies funded by sugary drink companies can be hard to trust. Shocking, right? Look, your body needs electrolytes. They’re responsible for so many of our bodies’ natural functions. And when you sweat from an intense workout, you lose quite a bit of them. I’ll go over healthy ways to restore hydration without having to reach for that neon green sports drink. And I’ll even give you a recipe for my ultimate natural hydration drink. #44 Doug Bopst on Doing Time and Changing Lives

We all make choices in life. Sometimes those choices come from a place of pain and desperation. Sometimes those choices come from a desire to change and grow. It’s up to us to put the intent behind the decision. Changing your life is about making different choices. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. I’m Darin Olien, the “superfood hunter”. On this podcast, you’ll hear honest conversations with extraordinary people that inspire me. Doug Bopst has served his time. Now he’s using his time for good. Doug is an award-winning personal trainer, author, speaker and podcast host. But before that, he was a drug addict and a drug dealer. After a judge found him guilty of “possession with intent to sell,” Doug served several months in prison. Forced to detox from a pain pill addiction in his small cell, he knew he had hit rock bottom. But a conversation with his cellmate changed everything. I’ll let you hear the details directly from him in this episode. It was that same cellmate that inspired Doug to devote his life to fitness. It’s a passion that now fuels his entire life’s mission. Today, Doug works to help other people overcome their pasts and make more productive decisions for their future. His three books  From Felony to Fitness to Free, Faith Family Fitness and his latest, The Heart of Recovery all detail his story and similar stories that have inspired him. Doug’s podcast, The Adversity Advantage,  gives people a platform to share their stories of hardship and struggles, and how they overcame them to create good in the world. Telling his story to those it could help is probably his favorite thing about his journey. This is evident in the many speeches he’s shared with companies, organizations and schools across the country. In this conversation, Doug tells me about his tragic backstory but also his triumphant journey. We get into his lowest points as well as his proudest moments. He touches on all parts of his recovery, including realizing the need for a spiritual outlet, not just a physical one. Fitness was instrumental in changing Doug’s life. Now he’s paying it forward. I’m so excited for you guys to hear all about it. Other great tidbits in this episode: The factors leading to Doug’s addiction The fateful incident of Cinco de Mayo 2008 The amazing opportunity the judge gave Doug after sentencing him His horrific experience with detoxing from pills How he got his first fitness job Doug’s breakdown at Disney and what he learned from it His spiritual journey Why it’s ok to let some relationships go The Adversity Advantage Podcast Changing your environment to match your new goals Links & Resources Doug’s Website Instagram Facebook Twitter The Adversity Advantage Podcast From Felony to Fitness to Free - Book Faith Family Fitness - Book The Heart of Recovery - Book Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” Sign up for my Fatal Conveniences Newsletter The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. #43 Fatal Conveniences™: Shallow Breathing: Take a Deep Breath

Pay attention to the way you breathe. Take a deep breath in right now. Are your shoulders raising? If so, you’re probably shallow breathing. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us. Shallow breathing keeps us in a perpetual state of stress. When you’re stressed, your breathing quickens and you inhale shallowly. However, if you breathe this way normally, your body is constantly in a state of stress. Shallow breathing, or thoracic breathing, comes with a laundry list of negative side effects. And you may not even realize you’re doing it. Instead of thoracic breathing, we all should be diaphragmatically breathing. This long fancy word just means you should be using your diaphragm to draw air into your body. Watching a newborn is a perfect example of diaphragmatic breathing. They draw air through their nose into their lungs, and their belly expands. As they exhale, their belly contracts. Try doing that now. See the difference? So besides stressing us out, what other harm is shallow breathing causing? Well, it limits our functional movement and muscular balance for starters. It also messes with our immune system and metabolism and can even cause muscle and joint pain and stiffness. But don’t worry. In this segment, I break down how to tell the difference between shallow and diaphragmatic breathing. And I give you ways to practice how to quit shallow breathing for good.  Other info in this segment: I reveal the reasons behind my obsession with fatal conveniences The definitions of thoracic and diaphragmatic breathing How to tell if you’re shallow breathing How many breaths you should be taking per minute PTSD and breathing How you can retrain your body to breathe using your diaphragm Links & Resources: The Effect of Diaphragmatic Breathing on Pain, Anxiety and Depression Breathing Pattern Disorders and Functional Movement The Effect of Diaphragmatic Breathing on Attention The Respiration Connection The Physiological Effects of Slow Breathing in the Healthy Human How Shallow Breathing Affects Your Whole Body The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown Listen to Patrick McKeown’s episode of The Darin Olien Show Netflix’ Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” Want more great info on how to detoxify your life? #42 Patrick McKeown on Nasal Breathing for Optimal Health

What if major health problems could be solved just by teaching people how to breathe differently? We are a nation of mouth breathers, which is taking a toll on our respiratory health and our entire bodies. So, what’s the answer? Nasal breathing. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have honest conversations with the extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they'll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. So, if you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you.  Patrick McKeown doesn’t breathe through his mouth. And neither should you. Patrick is a breathing advisor to Laird Hamilton’s XPT. He’s a Fellow of The Royal Society of Biology and has been published in medical journals worldwide. I’ve recommended his book, The Oxygen Advantage, more than any other book in the last few years. In this book,  Patrick explains specially formulated techniques he teaches to reduce breathlessness during exercise, increase oxygen to the brain, and improve sleep and concentration. Patrick’s exploration with nasal breathing began after suffering multiple respiratory issues as a child. He was a mouth breather, like so many of us are. And just like most mouth breathers, he was not aware of it. But his chronic bronchitis, asthma and sleep apnea couldn’t be cured by anything the doctors were offering him. Today, Patrick champions nasal breathing to people all over the world. His work on the relationship between breathing and health has helped countless people. I use his techniques, specifically while working out, and it’s made a world of difference in my stamina. But it’s about more than just having better workouts. Breathing through your nose can completely change your health for the better. In this episode, Patrick and I get into all the benefits of nasal breathing. We talk about how breathing through your mouth leads to things like asthma, sleep apnea and a whole list of other respiratory issues. Patrick is most passionate about getting his message of nasal breathing to children, which is why he offers a free-breathing program on his website specifically for kids. So take a deep breath, from your nose, and take a listen to this one, guys. And if you have asthma, sleep problems, or have kids that do, you should listen especially hard. #41 Fatal Conveniences™: Overeating: Enough is Enough

The holiday season in America comes with a lot of food. There’s really no way around it. We’re going to be offered things we would never normally eat. But for some reason, we will eat them. And we’ll keep eating, probably till we feel sick. You may think doing this every once in a while is no big deal. But overeating comes with consequences. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us. It’s not that we’re addicted to food. It’s more that we’re addicted to eating. The holiday season always gets me thinking about the amount of food considered normal in our culture. Americans sure know how to eat. But have you ever wondered how we got here? Why are we eating so much when we don’t need to? And what is it doing to our bodies? The truth is, it’s not just humans that overeat. When animals have access to a never-ending food supply, they overeat too. Why? Because we’re supposed to work for our food! We’re supposed to forage. We’re supposed to peel, carve, chop, carry, prepare. We’re not supposed to open a box, hit start on the microwave, and eat.  In the segment, I get into the multi-faceted topic of overeating. There’s lots that goes into this, guys. But the bottom line is, processed foods high in sugar, fat, and salt keep us coming back for more. We crave them. But there is good news. If you stop eating them, you’ll stop craving them. It really is that simple. I want you all to work more whole foods into your diet. Fresh, healthy fruit, vegetables, nuts, and legumes; that’s what we need more of. So as we go through this holiday season in such a different way than years past, let’s insert some new healthy traditions in there as well.  Other great information in this segment: The evolution of overeating Our overabundance of food How we got here The dangers of processed foods Fat, Sugar and Salt Why we’re no better than baboons How the human body reacts to excess calories Links & Resources: Undervalued and Ignored An Interview With Jeff Novick Does Food Addiction Exist? #40 Dr. David Sinclair on The Secrets of Longevity Genes

If you had the chance to slow down the aging process, would you take it? This sci-fi concept may sound like something from a Star Trek episode. But with new research coming to light, anti-aging fiction could very soon be a reality. Maybe it’s all in the genes.  WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have honest conversations with the extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. So, if you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you. Dr. David Sinclair is trying to put a stopper in the aging process. In fact, he’s the one leading the charge. David is the Australian-born Harvard Medical School professor of genetics. He’s also co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging Research at Harvard Medical School.  On top of all that, he’s also a Professor and Head of the Aging Labs at UNSW, Sydney, and an honorary Professor at the University of Sydney. Like many pioneering scientists, he hasn’t been immune to controversy. But, if you Google his name, you’ll see a laundry list of accolades. Especially within the area he’s best known for is, which are genes and small molecules that delay aging. #39 Fatal Conveniences™: Microwaves: Zapping Away Nutrients

I haven’t used a microwave in over 35 years. So I was shocked to hear that a friend was still using one frequently. You guys, microwaves are bad news. Sure, they heat up your leftovers in seconds, but what else are they doing to your food? Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us. Before you put those leftovers in the microwave, read this first. Microwaves first hit the scene in the 1940s, when convenient food was starting to become all the rage. Invented by Percy Spencer, these contraptions were marketed as a way to prepare food quickly. By the late 1970s, almost every American household had one. We all grew up with one, maybe you still even use one. But I’m telling you now, throw out your microwave! Don’t even donate it, I don’t want anyone cooking their food this way. Just take a sledgehammer to the damn thing.  Why am I so convinced microwaves are bad news? Because they change food at a molecular level. The way they work is by agitating the water molecules in food. The water molecules are ripped and torn apart, completely changing the structure of the food you’re heating. This depletes nutrients and leaves you with a nuked mess of empty calories.  If that isn’t enough to convince you to toss your microwave, check out the studies I’ve linked below. Please guys, just heat your food on the stove. It’s not that hard. I’ve been doing it that way my entire adult life. A few extra minutes is worth it to make sure you’re getting all the vitamins and nutrients your food has to offer.  Information in this Segment: The invention and evolution of the modern microwave How microwaves work  The study that shows broccoli losing 97% of its antioxidants after being microwaved Why you should lightly steam veggies instead Why you should NEVER microwave breastmilk The negative health effects of microwaved food Links & Resources: Microwave Cooking and Nutrition Microwave Ovens and Radiation Is There Any Evidence that Microwaving Food Alters its Composition? #37 Fatal Conveniences™: Toxic Clothes: What Are You Wearing?

Have you ever thought about what your favorite jeans and t-shirt are made of? Sure, the tag may say cotton, nylon or polyester, but what goes into making those fabrics? Remember, whatever you put on your skin goes in your skin. And that’s just as true for your clothes. Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make.  So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. So you scored some cheap clothes on clearance. But at what cost to your health? Do you know we’ve been paying the same price for clothes since the ’70s? Think about that. The prices of everything else -gas, food, rent - have all gone up, but clothing hasn’t. Why is that? Because clothing companies have been finding ways to make clothing creation cheaper and cheaper. That means cheap labor and cutting corners on safety and regulation. All these short cuts are taking quite a toll on our health. You can find the proof in the plethora of toxins found in most of the clothes on store racks. In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I go over the shocking chemicals and toxins present in most of the clothing in your closet. This stuff is bad news, guys. I had to make this segment a bit longer than usual, for the sheer enormity of information I need you to be aware of. You’ll hear me break down each chemical and the adverse effects they have on your health.  I know it sucks to hear that your favorite hoodie may be making you sick. But don’t get too mad at me. I’m going to give you some safe, natural alternatives to stock your drawers with. We also go over what red flags to watch out for on clothing tags when shopping for your new apparel.  I know we all can’t afford to revamp our entire wardrobes, especially not right now. That’s why it’s important to shift your thinking on clothes altogether. We need to start shopping for the long-term. Maybe you have to spend a little bit more upfront, but they’ll last so much longer. And you won’t have to worry about harming your health, or your environment, with your new outfits.  Other Great Info in this Segment: Rashes- the first sign of an issue Why denim is the scariest of them all Why makes clothes waterproof? #36 Jeff Garner on Sustainable Fashion for the Future

We put them on our bodies every day. We run in them, and we sleep in them. We have our best and worst moments in them. I’m talking about clothes, and they’ve been a part of human history for thousands of years. But what we may not be aware of is what our clothes are made of can impact our health. Sustainable fashion is something we all should be thinking about, for ourselves and for the future. Jeff Garner wants to know what your underwear is made of. We don’t think much about the clothes we put on in the morning. But for Jeff, it’s all he thinks about. Growing up in a Civil War town on a horse farm in Tennessee, his friends weren’t much into fashion. But didn’t stop him from designing all their clothes. He appreciated the little things about clothes that most of us take for granted. An old cardigan from his grandfather, a lacy scarf from his grandmother - all these things were timeless inspiration pieces for him. But it wasn’t just about looks for Jeff. As a successful fashion designer, he cares about the fabrics and materials he uses in each design. His childhood was full of organic, natural materials that his family valued. But as he entered California’s fashion world, he realized “natural” wasn’t always what it claimed to be.  With his couture line Prophetik, Jeff’s mission is to offer beautiful, unique clothing dyed with plants and made with naturally sustainable fiber. Jeff is an artist at heart, and he showcases that in every piece he creates.  But it’s more than just fashion to Jeff. In this episode, he explains the toxic chemicals present in most store bought garments and the horrible effects they have on our health. He tells me why the fabric we choose for our underwear and sheets is the most important. I’m not a fashion guy, so Jeff really opened my eyes to things I was never aware of. Our addiction to cheap clothes is not only harming our health, but it’s also fueling an industry free from regulation and free from accountability. This trickle-down effect is detrimental not only to us, but to the people around the world forced to work under inhumane conditions, and their surrounding environments. Jeff has renewed my focus for sure, and I hope this conversation will do the same for you.   Other great info in this episode: Jeff’s origin story into the world of fashion How Prophetik came to be Why we should all buy hemp underwear and sheets The lies we’re fed about polyester Why Jeff makes his own silk board shorts Why we all need to shift our thinking on how much we should pay for a piece of clothing Hemp, hemp and more hemp The beauty of plant-based dyes The perils of yoga pants How profit and greed taints the fashion industry The Bra Lick Test Why we should all sleep nude Victoria Secrets’ secrets   Links & Resources: Prophetik Jeff’s Website Shop Sustainable Toxin-Free Undergarments Tips for Finding Less Toxic Clothing Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. If you’re looking to give a voice to your brand, and make sure that it’s heard by the right people, head to www.mustamplify.com/darin to see what Amplify can do for you.

#35 Fatal Conveniences™: That New Car Smell: A Toxic Cocoon

The average American spends 1.5 hours a day in their car. That number may even be higher for you. Our cars, especially with the windows rolled up, become a small contained environment. The particles in the interior air of your vehicle get recycled in and out of your lungs, and your body. But what exactly are you breathing in with that new car smell? Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make.  So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. That new car smell is actually a toxic chemical cloud. When you open your new car door for the first time and take a deep breath in, that new car smell triggers positive thoughts. We’ve been conditioned to love that smell. Our brains associate it with success, accomplishment, and of course, a fancy new car. If you can separate your preconceived feelings about this smell, you might notice it’s actually quite gross! A new car smell is a potent mix of overpowering chemical scents that have nothing positive to offer us. In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I get into the chemicals that create this potent new car smell. The main culprits are VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds. I break down what these are and the three VOCs you should be aware of as it pertains to your vehicle. I go over the harsh effects these toxins have on our health. And of course, I give you some tips on how to cut down the potency of these chemicals and how to avoid them altogether. If you spend a lot of time in your ride, you’re going to want to take a listen to this one.   Other great info in this segment: What are VOCs? What’s “car fluff,” and how does it add to that new car smell? What other vehicle components contribute to that toxic scent? What’s off-gassing? Which car manufacturers are working to cut down on toxics in vehicles? What can you do to eliminate that smell? What states or countries are creating new regulations to protect us? #34 Troy Swope on Canceling Plastic & Saving the Planet One Food Package at a Time

Salad. Meat. Sliced watermelon. Frozen veggies. What do all these supermarket products have in common? They’re all wrapped in some sort of plastic packaging. Not only is this plastic destroying our planet, but the toxic chemicals it’s made from is soaking into our food. It’s time to make some big changes, people. Troy Swope has a problem with plastic. There are 9.2 billion metric tons of plastic on our planet. If that sounds massive to you, it’s because every piece of plastic ever made still exists today. It doesn’t go anywhere, guys. It doesn’t break down. Troy Swope’s company Footprint was created after Troy realized that not only were these plastics destroying our planet, but they were harming his family as well. Before Footprint, Troy ran a materials company. After lab testing revealed that plastic containers were contaminating a product it was storing, Troy had a lightbulb moment. So, when his wife brought home a bunch of fresh sliced fruit packaged in plastic from the supermarket one day, his curiosity got the better of him. Sure enough, testing proved this fresh sliced, healthy fruit was covered in toxic chemicals from their storage containers. Now, Troy and his business partner/best friend Yoke Chung are supplying some of the big boys of food brands with sustainable, safe packaging. It started with a microwavable bowl used for frozen meals and expanded to a plethora of sustainable packaging. Footprint manufactures frozen food trays, six-pack rings, yogurt containers, coffee cups, and just about any sort of food container you can imagine, with more to come. Troy and Yoke envision a future where supermarkets and grocery stores are completely plastic-free. And I believe they are the ones to make it happen. In this episode, Troy breaks down the absolute nastiness of traditional food packaging. He explains the endocrine-disrupting chemicals that have free access to our bodies thanks to plastic food containers. This is something I’ve been bitching about for years and years now, so I can’t even tell you how exciting it is to partner with this guy and his amazing company to make real change. A glass of milk a day keeps the doctor away. Well, that's what we're made to believe. By consuming dairy products daily, you may feel like you're ticking off another box on your healthy diet list. But what if you learned that there's a whole world of corruption, propaganda, health misconceptions, and disease, all linked to the white stuff you're pouring on your cereal each morning?  Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. The US government spends an estimated 4.5 billion a year to subsidize the dairy industry.  But, who's really pulling the political strings? Since, well, forever, we've been told how fantastic milk and other dairy products are for our health. Some of you guys may even remember that crazy "Got Milk?" ad campaign, which was the dairy industry's attempt to make consuming milk cool.  Now, as more research comes to light, we're starting to see how wrong we've been. Not only is the information we've been fed way off the mark, but the animal welfare side of the industry is pretty hard to stomach too. In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I'm looking into the shocking realities behind our love for all things dairy. I break down some of the health risks behind too much milk and the things you can do not to feed into the industry. Also, the two big brands that have their dairy-loving hands firmly in the wrong people's pockets.  The dairy industry is a scary business. #32 Adam Sud on Treating Addiction with a Plant-Based Diet

When we feel like we're broken or unworthy, we can wind up finding fixes in unhealthy places. In 2018, almost 53 million people aged 12 years and older misused prescription drugs in the United States. As addiction rates continue to climb, the health of the nation is declining. One popular solution for those seeking help is to treat the addiction and subsequent health issues with more medication. While this can work for some, others find that a plant-based diet is swiftly becoming the key to a healthy recovery. But scratch the surface a little, and you'll quickly see that he's pretty extraordinary indeed. Adam's story surrounds drug and food addiction, isolation, body dysmorphia, desperation, but also gratitude, acceptance, and redemption. After becoming hooked on Adderall in high school, Adam spent most of his twenties going through a constant cycle of drug abuse and binge eating fast-foods. The more he consumed, the heavier he got. And the worse he started to feel within himself. As a result of his all-consuming lifestyle, during the peak of his addiction, he was over 300lbs with Type-2 diabetes. Broke, unemployed, and completely cut off from family and friends, the time had come. By August 21st, 2012, he had to make a choice- was he in, or was he out? All his fear, anger, and self-loathing had pushed him to breaking point. Late one night, he attempted suicide by drug overdose. Fortunately for us and everyone that loves him, it was a failed attempt. Finally, Adam reached out for help. After several stays in rehab and sober living facilities, he found sobriety. Also, he lost over 100 pounds, reversed his diabetes, and repaired his physical health, thanks to an active, plant-based lifestyle. Now, Adam is a Certified Holistic Lifestyle Coach and graduate of eCornell's Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate Program. He is a diabetes and food addiction coach for Mastering Diabetes. He’s also an international speaker for the plant-based and addiction recovery movements.  In this episode, Adam recounts his fascinating story- and guys, let me tell you, it's intense. First, he jumps right into where his addiction stemmed from, the heartache he felt and how he turned his life around so he can now devote his life to others.  Also, we discuss how his plant-based diet reversed his diabetes and repaired his physical health. Did you know that each foot contains 26 bones, 30 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments? So, this insanely complex anatomical structure accounts for almost 25% of the bones and joints in your entire body. Not to mention the 200,000 nerve endings on the sole of each foot alone! So why do we insist on condemning these incredible sensory powerhouses to a life of padding and cushioning? Guys, it's time we talked about shoes. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us. Strutting Your Stuff Shoeless Is The Way To Go! Once again, it turns out that even after thousands of years of evolution, Mother Nature still makes the best footwear. But we seem to have forgotten that. When we wear shoes consistently, what we're doing is reversing this marvel of engineering. Sadly, our love of fashionable footwear has drastically desensitized our feet and changed the way we walk. Therefore, over time, they have even altered the human gait. For the last 15 years or so, I've spent about 90% of my time totally shoe-less. Now, bear with me; I haven't gone completely bananas just yet. But, by ditching the kicks, you'll be rewarded with some pretty amazing health benefits. In this Fatal Conveniences™, I break down the importance of letting your feet breathe. I also look at our feet and how getting a bit more grounded can work its magic across your whole body. I also explore why shoes change the way we walk and the things you can do to retrain your feet to be free. #30 Steven Sashen on Running Barefoot

25% of the bones and joints in your entire body are located in your feet and ankles. Also, you have over 200,000 nerve endings on the sole of each foot. So why are we covering up these sensory powerhouses with padding and cushioning? Walking around or even running barefoot, or with footwear designed to let the feet be feet, can improve our overall physical health in ways we never imagined. Steven Sashen dives into things feet first. In fact, it’s his company motto. Xero Shoes was built out of a need for Steven to free his feet. After picking up sprinting again following a 30 year hiatus, Steven would injure himself constantly. Every couple of weeks would bring another pulled muscle or ankle strain. When a friend suggested a barefoot run, everything changed. After his first run with a barefoot running group, Steven was awakened with a new awareness of how his feet interacted with the ground. He ran 5K on that very first go around and was shocked at how easy it felt on his body. He was even able to pinpoint a reason for why he was injuring one leg more than the other. All this knowledge was too empowering to ignore, and Xero Shoes was born. In this conversation, Steven and I get into how incredibly powerful and intuitive our feet really are. We explore the foot to brain connection and how the modern day athletic shoe is counterproductive to the way we physically interact with the ground under our feet. Steven gives us the origin story of Xero Shoes, which gives you an understanding of why I refer to him as a “Master of Movement”. So kick off your shoes, and take a listen to this one, guys! #29 Fatal Conveniences™: Bug Spray: Fight the Bite

We’re outnumbered, folks! The estimated number of insects to humans is 200 million to one. This is a battle we will most definitely lose. Yet, we try in vain. In this hive of insect activity, repellents can help you steer clear of nasty stings and bites. But is our reliance on bug sprays harming our health? Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. Mosquitos are a pest! Every year, a third of us will cover ourselves with almost five pounds of bug repellent to keep those blood-thirsty bugs at bay. Okay, so there is a good reason to do so. After all, there are many mosquito and tick-transmitted diseases to ward-off; West Nile virus, malaria, and Lyme Disease, to name a couple. So, I'm not here to tell you that protecting yourself from bites isn't important. But, if the repellent you're using can fend off mosquitoes, maybe what it's doing to you isn't so great either. In this Fatal Conveniences™, I break down the most common toxic chemicals that lurk in insect repellents, such as DEET (N, N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), which is the granddaddy of them all. I also break down how these repellents affect children, and the simple things you can do today to keep insects away without sacrificing your health. Bugs, insects, Insecta or insectum- whatever you call our hexapod invertebrates, these creepy critters are vital for our ecosystems. So, finding non-harmful, preventative alternatives is crucial for the survival of not only us as a species, but also this incredible planet that we live on. #28 Dr. Andrew Huberman on The Soothing Science Behind Breathwork

Do you want to reduce stress, get better sleep, experience less anxiety, and have more emotional control? More and more research is showing that deep breathing exercises can help. If you’re constantly feeling off-balance, using daily breathwork practices might be the answer. So, let's take a deep, cleansing breath and dive right into it. Dr. Andrew Huberman Tries to Find the Small Connecting Pieces to Life’s Biggest Puzzles  Since he can remember, Andrew has had a fascination with animals and biology. In particular, their shapes, how they move, and their unique specializations. As a kid, he would read countless animal encyclopedias. He would try to figure out where we, as animals, fit into this world.  Today, Andrew is an absolute powerhouse in neurological research. He is a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the founder of the Huberman Lab, where he's involved in tons of breakthrough research on brain function, brain plasticity (the brain's ability to change as a result of experiences), and brain regeneration.   In his life-long quest to relieve suffering, The Huberman Lab focuses a lot on the visual system. Dr. Huberman’s team is currently studying how virtual reality can get rid of fear and anxiety and preserve sight in glaucoma patients. In fact, these insane experiments resulted in Andrew diving with great white sharks and climbing mountains without ropes or harnesses- all in the name of science, of course. In addition, his work in the Huberman Lab at Stanford has been heavily featured in Science, Discover, Scientific American, Time, and the New York Times.  In 2013, Andrew received the McKnight Foundation Neuroscience Scholar Award and the Biomedical Scholar Award from the Pew Charitable Trusts due to his research. Then, in 2017, Andrew also won the ARVO Cogan Award. Primarily because of his contributions to vision science.  In this episode, Andrew and I talk about why stress is actually good for your immune system. Also, we dive into the immense stress-relieving power behind breathwork and how your eyeballs are just another part of your brain. This totally fascinating episode gets right to the heart of proper breathing practices and how this simple act can positively impact your state of mind. Guys, this is not one to be missed! #27 Fatal Conveniences™: Sunscreen: Counterproductive Chemicals

The sun is so incredibly vital to our health. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, it begins to manufacture its own vitamin D. Vitamin D production is crucial to many body functions like calcium absorption, maintaining healthy bones and boosting the immune system. So why are we slathering on chemicals to block the sun rays? Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™.  This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. Human beings need sunlight. I know many of you are probably thinking “But Darin, what about sunburn? What about skin cancer?” And those are valid concerns. I go into depth on both of these subjects in this segment. But my point is this: when you apply sunscreen to your skin, you are absorbing dangerous chemicals directly into your bloodstream. If cancer is what you’re trying to avoid, you’ll be sorely disappointed to learn that the very chemicals you think are protecting you are actually increasing your chances for many different kinds of cancer. In this segment, I identify the four common toxins found in most sunscreens. I explain what they do to your body and why you should avoid them at all costs. I also get into the delusion we’ve all been fed our entire lives about the sun being dangerous. We need the sun! Don’t get me wrong, we need to use common sense. If you have a history of skin cancer if your family, then by all means, look for ways to protect yourself. But using chemicals is not the answer. If you need to use sunscreen, I go over what to avoid and what to use instead.  Other great info in this segment: The 4 main chemicals in most sunscreens and why they’re horrible for you The importance of Vitamin D A frightening study from the FDA Melanin explained What sun-bathing women in Sweden can tell us about the sun The magic of Nitric Oxide Healthy sunscreen brands that get my seal of approval Links & Resources: Is Sunscreen the New Margarine Avoidance of sun exposure as a risk factor for major causes of death FDA Sunscreen Report Raises Concerns Skin Cancer and Other Damage Getting Enough Vitamin D Sunscreen Should be Your Last Resort 12 Best Natural Sunscreens for Senstive Skin Sunscreen Glossary Netflix ‘Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   Be sure to check out The Darin Olien Show Episode #26 Matt Meruca on Letting the Sun Back Into Your Life for more great information on the importance of sunlight!

#26 Matt Maruca on Letting the Sun Back in Your Life

Did you know that 92% of the average American’s life is spent indoors? If that doesn’t bum you out, I don’t know what will. We are creatures of light. The sun directly fuels us and gives us energy. When we actively work to block sunlight from our lives, it takes a toll on our health and well-being. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you.  Matt Muraca needed to figure out why he kept getting sick. In his teen years, Matt had digestion issues that would show up after every meal. On top of his gut problems, he also had countless allergies and debilitating headaches. Even at a young age, he knew there must be a way to resolve his health challenges with diet. After experimenting with the Paleo diet and researching like crazy, he felt better, but not as good as he knew he could. Today, Matt considers himself a student of the planet. His research has led him to focus on mitochondria. Matt describes mitochondria as “the little engines in our cells that keep us alive by burning our food with oxygen to make water and energy.” One of the most significant factors in how well our mitochondria are functioning is sunlight. The sun fuels our mitochondria, and as a direct result, it fuels us. Matt is a passionate messenger about the power of the sun and how badly we need it back in our lives. He also educates others on the dangers of blue light and its effects on our circadian rhythm. His company Ra Optics (Ra, as in the Sun God), creates fashionable glasses used to block out blue light from computers, phones and TV screens.  In this episode, Matt and I get into some complicated scientific principles. Bear with us, guys, we definitely nerd out quite a bit. But I promise you, it’s worth it. We really need to understand how our bodies work, at the cell level. Once you understand the nitty-gritty details of mitochondria, you’ll want to provide them with the best fuel possible so that you can feel great every day. So, go outside, lay out in the sunshine, and enjoy. Other great tidbits in this episode: The story of Matt’s health issues Dr. Jack Kruse and his impact on Matt’s research The relationship between spirituality and light The science of the origin of life Genes and Nature vs. Nurture  What happens when your mitochondria are damaged Alzheimer’s and the mitochondrial connection The Light Diet and Matt’s steps to utilize all its benefits Links & Resources: Matt’s Website Matt on Instagram Matt’s YouTube Channel Ra Optics  - Use Promo Code: DARIN and get 10% off! You can get silky smooth hair without sacrificing your health. Did you know that the FDA does not require companies to provide the exact ingredients in their shampoos or conditioners? The FD&C Act allows companies to release beauty products onto the market without reviewing its ingredients. Nobody is looking into this stuff, guys. And they’re wreaking havoc on your body’s delicate systems. I don’t use shampoos and conditioners daily, but I do use them. I have longer hair and I like it to look nice. So, yes, I use conditioner. But that wasn’t always the case. Before his health journey, he lived off hotdogs dipped in peanut butter, pizza and cheap beef burgers. Despite that, to look at him now, that is all a very distant memory. He’s currently a body and brain performance coach and author of 14 books. This includes the New York Times Bestseller, Beyond Training. He’s a speaker, host of one of the world’s first fitness podcasts Ben Greenfield Fitness, and CEO of Ben Greenfield Fitness and Kion. As 2015 rolled in, Ben was coaching some of the world’s leading CEO’s, chefs, biohackers, endurance competitors, and professional athletes. Meanwhile, Ben’s quest for ultimate fitness and health never ends. As part of his pursuit of becoming the next real-life superman, he willingly tests and experiments biohacking techniques on his body. If you look at the results, it's insane. For instance, as he celebrated his 37th birthday, his biological age was sitting at an impressive 20. This is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his accolades and achievements. In this conversation, we talk about how your current health habits could be harming future generations and the ways you can reverse it. Also, Ben describes his eclectic childhood and how his health-conscious, home-schooled kids are learning through doing. #22 Dr. Joel Fuhrman on The Nutritarian Diet and How it Can Save Us All

You hear me talk about it a lot. What we eat has a huge impact on our health and the health of the environment. What if I told you that nutrition is even more powerful than any of us are led to believe? By eating a Nutritarian Diet, you can protect yourself against heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even dementia. We’ve always had all the answers, and now it’s time to use them. If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you.  Dr. Joel Fuhrman knows more about nutrition than anyone I’ve ever met. In fact, he’s written 13 books on the subject. Seven of those have become New York Times bestsellers, including Eat to Live and his latest, Eat for Life. From a young age, Dr. Fuhrman was obsessed with healthy food. Growing up in Yonkers, NY, he would spend hours reading books with his father about the science of nutrients. His healthy eating style gave him an edge as a teenage athlete. In 1976, he placed 3rd in the world for pairs figure skating. These unique credentials gave him authenticity while advising Olympic athletes on nutrition years later.  Today, Dr. Fuhrman is a champion for the “Nutritarian Diet,” a phrase he coined himself. This health-driven way of eating focuses on a diet full of nutrient-dense whole foods. He’s a firm believer in the dangers of the standard American diet. #21 Fatal Conveniences™: Anti-Aging Skincare: The Youthfulness Scam

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to anti-aging skincare. Walk into any pharmacist, and you'll see shelves lined with promises. Fewer wrinkles, youthful, glowing skin are just some of the claims that these products make. But, when you dig a little deeper, the reality of these cosmetics isn't so pretty. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make. So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. Aren't the advertisers and marketing teams of these skincare products smart? They've made us think that we're not beautiful and wonderful just as we are. I do get it though. Slowing down the signs of aging and feeling better about what you see in the mirror is something we all want. But you must remember that what goes ON your skin, goes IN your skin.  I'm going further than skin-deep in this segment to uncover some of the hidden toxic ingredients lurking in anti-aging skincare. I discuss mercury and Teflon, the two bad boys lurking within your cosmetics. I unravel just how they affect the body, and the proactive steps you can take to make better purchasing choices.  Other topics from this FATAL CONVENIENCES™ SEGMENT: Why you should vote with your dollars  The keywords to look out for when checking cosmetic labels Would you put Teflon on your face? #20 Suzanne Somers on Discovering Your Strength In a Sea of Adversity

Life is a journey that you can't plan out. When we hit inevitable roadblocks, it can be hard to see any other way than down. During these times of adversity, each of us needs to find our strength. One way to do that is to take from the negatives in your life and use it as fuel to create your power. If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you.  Suzanne Somers is Hollywood royalty. In 1977, Suzanne became a TV icon. She played the cute blonde on the hit TV show, Three's Company. When the star asked for the same salary as her male counterparts, she was quickly booted from the show and labeled a "troublemaker." While the industry was busy shunning her, Suzanne was secretly reinventing herself. She had stopped focusing on what she didn't have and built upon what she did have- visibility. The show had made her a household name. So she took that name to pursue a dream career in Las Vegas.  Soon she was starring in a big production, with all the razzle-dazzle you'd expect in Vegas. By 1987, she was named Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year alongside the legendary Frank Sinatra. As 2001 rolled in, Suzanne had a significant setback. Her terrifying diagnosis of breast cancer forced her to take charge of her health, and her life. With her signature "I'll show you" attitude, she ultimately won the battle. In this eye-opening episode, we get a glimpse behind the curtain of what makes Suzanne such a successful entrepreneur and health advocate. We look at how she found strength and reinvented herself, even with the odds stacked against her. Suzanne also tells us the motives behind some of her most iconic books, Breakthrough, Tox-Sick, and Knockout. You don’t want to miss this conversation. Other Insightful in this episode: How Suzanne went from TV icon to entrepreneur Why you should listen to that voice in your head How Suzanne changed her perspective on the worst day of her life The murder of Dr. Gonzalez and Suzanne's brush with death  Suzanne's childhood from hell and the long road to forgiveness How to invest in making healthier choices  Why Suzanne fried an egg on the pavement Links and Resources: Suzanne’s Website Suzanne on Instagram - @SuzanneSomers Suzanne on Facebook - @suzannesomers Suzanne on Twitter - @suzanneSomers Books by Suzanne Somers Suzanne’s IMDB Netflix’ Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. If you’re looking to give a voice to your brand, and make sure that it’s heard by the right people, head to www.mustamplify.com/darin to see what Amplify can do for you.

#19 Fatal Conveniences™: Receipts: Handing Out Toxins

“Would you like your receipt, sir?” I always say no to this question. Why? Because that little slip of paper is full of toxic chemicals that seep into your skin. And most people have no idea how dangerous they are. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health, and the health of the environment around us. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps, so you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you, and the choices you make. So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. In this segment, we’re diving into the dangers of receipts. Grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, banks- they all give these to you. And once you’ve handled them and shoved them in your pocket or purse, the chemicals they contain are all over your skin. Once on your skin, they slowly seep into your bloodstream, messing with your health.  The thermal paper used for these receipts is saturated in BPA and BPS. These are hormone-interrupting chemicals that can do real damage once they hit your system. Take a listen to learn more about what these toxins do to your body and why you should avoid them at all costs. Just say no to receipts! Other questions I answer in this Fatal Conveniences™ segment: What are BPA and BPS, and what do they do to your body? Why do these toxins get on your skin so easily? #18 Jason Garner on Healing the Child Within

There’s a lot of pain in the world. There’s a lot of anger, a lot of frustration. Maybe the reason why nothing is getting solved is because we’re all approaching problems from a childish perspective. Growing as a person isn’t just about healing your present wounds. It’s about healing the child within us, and finally moving on from past pain. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time.  If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. From the outside, it seemed like Jason Garner had made it. Jason grew up with a single mom who worked three jobs just to get by. Living in a trailer, having to sell sticks of gum to buy hot lunch at school, he equated happiness with money. Like many of us, he assumed once he had money things would be so much easier. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. In high school, Jason got his first real job working at a flea market. Being able to make twice the minimum wage and overtime meant big paychecks for a teen. He worked his way up to the beer tent, where he was tasked with recruiting local bands to bring in more customers. This organic experience gave birth to a lucrative career as a concert promoter. In 2009, Jason found himself successful, rich and the CEO of an international music company. Then the death of his beloved mother sent him into a tailspin. He began to realize that the life he created was based on a lie. Money wasn’t filling the void inside.  So he decided to completely change his life. But waking up not knowing who he was anymore was terrifying. So after some listless wandering, he found a spiritual teacher and began to meditate. That’s when the healing began. In this incredibly heartfelt conversation, Jason and I get into the hard reality that we all have a lost child inside of us calling the shots. It’s only when we explore that pain and figure out how to heal that we can start guiding our life with intention. Jason tells me why he decided to write his book And I Breathed, and how it’s facilitated his journey. This is a conversation everyone can benefit from. And it definitely parallels the woes of the world right now.  Other insightful tidbits in this episode: Jason’s story of growing up in poverty Why he equated pain with not having enough money From flea market worker to the man in charge How every argument you have with an adult is actually with a child How Jason ended up on his therapist’s floor The power of meditation Why a broken heart is a perfect place to start your transformation Why you should always ask questions in the heat of the moment Links: Jason’s Website Get in touch with Jason ...And I Breathed - The Book Jason on LinkedIn Jason on Twitter Jason on Instagram Netflix' Down To Earth' Official Trailer Download Darin's amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code "DARIN" The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. If you’re looking to give a voice to your brand, and make sure that it’s heard by the right people, head to www.mustamplify.com/darin to see what Amplify can do for you.

#17 Arthur Menard de Calenge on The Dangers of Electromagnetic Fields

It's not easy to get away from technology these days. It's the cell phones in our pockets, to the surrounding WiFi and Bluetooth. We can't just switch it all off and shut it down. As our homes fill with these electronic devices, we're also inviting in an unwanted guest—the hidden dangers of electromagnetic fields. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW, On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Arthur Menard de Calenge is a problem solver. It all started with dinner. The guests sat around the table and took out their phones. One by one, they placed them face down on the table. Before long, the conversation turned to, "Surely holding a radiation-emitting device so close to you can't be good for your health?"  At this party, Arthur's brain started ticking away, and he decided to do some research. So, what exactly was happening to his body if he kept his phone in his pants pocket all day? What he found blew his mind. Countless studies and peer reviews showing the potential harm that cell-phone electromagnetic fields (EMFs) could be having on your health. He saw words like "cancer," "cardiovascular disease," and even "reproductive issues."  Arthur has always understood how important maintaining your health is if you want to live a long, disease-free life. But to stop using technology altogether? Sorry folks, that isn't an option.  In a bid to protect the family jewels, he had to take matters into his own underpants.  Today, Arthur is the co-founder of Lambs, a stylish protective apparel brand that you'll want to wear.  Inspired by NASA's spacesuits, their coveted Faraday Line is a collection of comfortable T-shirts, beanies, and underpants that block wireless radiation. The super-soft, MET lab-tested cotton fabric is carefully interwoven with silver thread. Why is that great? Well, it blocks 99% of microwaves, like WiFi, Bluetooth, and cell phone radiation. It's also antibacterial. In 2019, Arthur's revolutionary endeavors won him the Forbes '30 under 30' title. But, he's not letting that get to his head. This "shy kid" is taking the world by storm. And Lambs is growing it's apparel range to also cater to women. Not only is Art a mastermind engineer, but for over ten years, he has been competing at the national level in Ski Racing and Karate. And, back in 2011, he was a French Collegiate Rowing Champion.  In this episode, Arthur and I are tuning in on a different kind of wavelength. We unpack the truths behind EMFs and the things we can do to reduce our daily exposure. Arthur also takes us below the belt and talks about how Lambs products work and why they're effective. This guy is an innovative genius. You're not going to want to miss this one.   Other Significant Bits To Get Stuck Into: How Lambs became a global phenomenon  The scary reality behind our cell phones The unavoidable politics surrounding wireless radiation Taking a closer look at 5G How do electromagnets work? #16 Ronsley Vaz on Why Your Voice Matters

It can be scary to say what you're thinking, especially in today’s divided world. We can’t let the divisiveness that surrounds us stop us from speaking our minds. It’s natural to be afraid, but say it anyway. Be courageous. Speaking your truth gives the people around you the unspoken permission to do the same. And that is powerful. Your voice matters. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW, On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. Ronsley Vaz knows a thing or two about speaking his mind. I am so excited to introduce this episode’s guest to you. Ronsley Vaz is the curator of the first audio marketing agency in the world, Must Amplify. Ronsley and his team produce this podcast for me, but he does a whole lot more than that. Ronsley helps people find their voice, and then he amplifies it. Podcasting is so much more than having a conversation with someone you find interesting. It’s a way to get your perspective out into the world, and have others hear it and apply it to their own lives. It allows your listeners to learn from you, while you’re learning from them, and your guests. It’s such a full-circle way to bounce ideas off of like-minded, and not-so-like-minded people in order to see things in a new light. Ronsley knows all of this, but he didn’t always. Ronsley started his business journey so far away from the world of podcasting, it might as well have been in another universe. In 2013, his dream of owning and running a restaurant had failed miserably- and left him almost $500,000 in debt. He didn’t stay down for long though, and quickly started a new business venture- connecting talented chefs with time-poor entrepreneurs who needed a little help preparing healthy meals for the week.  This then led to starting his own podcast, Bond Appetit, which quickly gained an audience of over 1 million listeners in under 4 months and became Australia’s #1 food podcast. The technical side of podcast creation was the easy part for Ronsley, so he was puzzled when others came to him for help starting their own podcasts.  Then he had a lightbulb moment. Realizing he may have something to offer, he began selling courses on how to start your own podcast. It worked. He was able to pay off his massive restaurant debt in just over two years. The success of these courses led to his greatest project yet- Amplify, the world’s first audio marketing agency. Ronsley and his team help others find their voices, and he gives them a platform in which to amplify it. He’s done it for me- The Darin Olien Show is proof! In this conversation, we get into the importance of speaking your mind. Being courageous enough to put your truth out into the world is never arrogant. It’s critical, especially now, to understand why your voice matters. Ronsley tells us all about starting his successful business and how it led to creating We Are Podcast, the southern hemisphere’s first podcast conference. He also gives us some scoop on his passion project, the audio docuseries The Psychology of Entrepreneurship. You’re not going to want to miss this one. Other great bits in this episode: Ronsley’s story of starting and naming Amplify Why starting a podcast came easy for him The whirlwind of Bond Appetit What sparked We Are Podcast Why Ronsley was surprised people wanted to hear his voice The difference between being fearless and courageous The two things putting your voice out there gives you the ability to do This episode’s Fatal Conveniences™ topic:  Being Dishonest Links: Must Amplify Ronsley on LinkedIn Ronsley on Instagram Ronsley on Twitter Ronsley’s TedX Talk Ronsley’s Book: Amplify: How to Raise Your Voice, Boost Your Brand, and Grow Your Business Listen to The Psychology of Entrepreneurship Netflix ‘Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. #15 Dr. Pazio on How To Transform Your Health & Slow Down The Aging Process

What changes can we make to live a longer and healthier life? Sadly, so many mainstream medical systems deliver a reactive approach to healthcare, rather than a proactive one. Just imagine what we could all achieve if we stayed one step ahead of chronic disease and aging. But change is on the horizon. The secret to optimum health might just lie in medical engineering. Dr. Pazio is a healthcare pioneer. Alexander Paziotopoulos, (aka Dr. Pazio) is the CEO and Lead Physician at The Pazio Institute. He's also somewhat of a medical engineer.  This guy is a highly sought-after specialist in anti-aging, regenerative, and functional medicine. His philosophy is one I'm sure we can all get on board with, which is to get all of us optimizing our health through personalized health care. That means taking care of the whole, even down to the smallest cell, to increase both the quality of life and longevity.  Admittedly, Dr. Alex is like the Sherlock Holmes of health. He dedicates hours of his time to each patient that walks through his door. Both he and his team investigate and analyze precisely what health issues need addressing before creating individualized plans that utilize some of the planet’s latest advances in medical science and technology.  But, it's not just about the physical healing here. Dr. Pazio checks the mental and emotional side too.  I could literally talk to him all day. In this episode, we cover a lot of ground regarding all aspects of our health. We speak about the two anti-aging supplements we should all be taking, and why our guts love the smell of Autumn. We also explore stress and the cascade of health problems it can create. But don't worry, he also provides us with some stress-busting solutions. You're not going to want to miss this one.  Other insightful stuff from my conversation with Dr. Pazio: Why physicians should become engineers How Dr. Pazio’s consultation process works What is Pelvic Stabilization, and why is it so important? #14 Stephen Brooks on How We Can Live More Efficiently Together

Now more than ever, people are searching for a better way. A better way to live, a better way to eat, and a better way to help their fellow man. We’ve always known the answers, but we’ve somehow forgotten them along the way. We have to work together collectively to bring about a healthier planet for us all. Stephen Brooks has so much to teach us all.  And he’s still learning, too! You may remember Stephen Brooks from my Netflix show Down to Earth, which I co-host with Zac Efron. You’ll see Stephen on episode 3, where Zac and I traveled to Costa Rica to visit Punta Mona, one of the oldest and most bio-diverse permaculture education centers in Central America.   What is permaculture, you ask? Well, there’s no better person on the planet to explain it to us than Stephen Brooks. Stephen grew up in Miami, Florida, and always felt a strong pull towards nature. He had over 600 gallons of fish tanks in his family home where he took care of jellyfish, lobsters, fish and sea creatures he didn’t even know the name of. It’s that same instinctual curiosity that led him to move to Costa Rica and discover a better way to live. Stephen firmly believes that we must treat the Earth as an extension of our own bodies. If we treat it well, it will provide us with everything we need to live a happy, full life. Permaculture expands on that belief, by stressing the importance of comradery with our neighbors. We must work together in order to thrive.  In this episode, Stephen and I have such a fun and enthusiastic conversation about everything he’s working towards in Costa Rica. His passion is infectious, and together we explore how you can take more of a vested interest in where your food comes from and why that is so vitally important. So take a little time and listen to my boy Stephen explain the magic of permaculture and how you can incorporate a bit of it into your life. Things You Don’t Want to Miss in This Episode: How it all started with a Grateful Dead concert Stephen’s “aha moment” while living in Spain Wisdom from Stephen’s late friend How we vote with our wallet What is Permaculture? #13 Kenny Chesney on Finding Balance Between the Extremes

Performing night after night to sold-out arenas, pouring your heart out into every song, and drawing energy from the crowd must be an intoxicating feeling. But then after months of touring, it's over. How do you find balance between the extremes?  Welcome to the Darin Olien Show. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. Kenny Chesney is a country music megastar. And he’s also a good friend of mine. Kenny and I work out together and hang out together. He’s just a real, genuine, sweet guy. In 1997, Kenny had his first #1 Billboard hit with “She’s Got It All,” off his album I Will Stand. Even before that, he’s been selling out arenas all over the world and continues to do so. Standing in front of a 60,000+ crowd is a feeling Kenny struggles to describe. But it’s thrilling. He loves it. He thrives on it. He draws energy and magic from the crowd, and it gives him life. But then the tour is over, and he’s just a guy. That transition has proven to be extremely emotionally draining for Kenny. And he struggles to strike a balance between the extreme high of performing, and the silence of the time between touring. Kenny and I get into some deep stuff. I might not be able to relate to singing in front of massive crowds screaming my name. Still, I think we all can relate to feeling imbalanced when our work and personal lives are so different. In this conversation, which was recorded pre-pandemic, I share some tips and tricks to finding balance in a chaotic life. We also discuss Kenny’s eating habits, which aren’t always the best, but certainly entertaining. And he gives us some dirt on what it’s like to work with Ed Sheeran. You’re not going to want to miss this one, that’s for sure. Other great stuff in my chat with Kenny: How Kenny prepares his body for a tour The mistakes he sees other artists make What Kenny’s downtime looks like Why he struggles with balance Why fame doesn’t feed your soul How seeing Bruce Springsteen play live changed him The love/hate relationship Kenny has with ice baths The melodic genius of Ed Sheeran How 4th Period Geography class in high school ruined Kenny’s eating habits This episode’s Fatal Conveniences™ topic: Shampoo  Links: KennyChesney.com  (Look for rescheduled tour dates here) Kenny on Twitter Kenny on Instagram Kenny on Facebook Listen to Kenny’s song “Tip of My Tongue” co-written by Ed Sheeran SafeCosmetics.com Chemicals in Shampoo May Pose Health Concerns What are Parabens? #12 Carlos Tanner on Going Beyond Your Sensory Spectrum- Saved by Psychedelics

There are parts of us all that could use a little healing. But if you're in a self-destructive cycle, harnessing the power of nature could be the medicine that saves you. Let's talk plant-medicine and psychedelics. In this episode, we're going well beyond the fringes of our perceived reality with a new buddy of mine, Carlos Tanner.   Carlos was living the ideal, all American dream. He had a beautiful house, a nice car, the perfect job. But what many people didn't see was his deep dissatisfaction with life, and a spiraling heroin addiction. It wasn't until he had a near-death experience involving his car and the Manhan River, that his life took a dramatic turn.   Today, Carlos is the founder of the Ayahuasca Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Iquitos, Peru. This research center offers healing retreats and in-depth educational courses. They continuously strive to understand the plant-based healing practices used by indigenous healers of the Peruvian Amazon. For anyone who has tuned in to the "Down To Earth" series on Netflix, (hosted by the affable Zac Efron and yours truly), you'll probably recognize Carlos from the last episode of the first season. We experienced some of his magical, plant-based healing practices first hand.   Carlos has participated in over 700 ayahuasca ceremonies. He regularly speaks about his experiences with Ayahuasca and his path to becoming a shaman.   In this episode, my eyes have truly been opened. Carlos tells us his insane back story, and how he landed his ultimate job working with one of the world's most sacred medicinal plants. We dive into his trippy, yet visceral experience during his first Ayahuasca ceremony, and the epic work the Ayahuasca Foundation is now doing for medicinal plant research and the planet.  Other Highlights From This Episode Where Carlos’ love of medicinal plants began What it was really like to have the “dream job.” The near-death experience that put Carlos on a different path The first Ayahuasca experience- from vomit to sombreros  What is Ayahuasca? The hypersensitivity state and going beyond the five senses Creating the Ayahuasca Foundation. #11 Rory Cordial on Transforming Your Health Like Your Life Depends on It

The human body is amazing. It is the ultimate, complex, yet beautiful machine that has an insane capacity to heal and adapt. Therefore, it deserves our respect and there are many simple ways we can all do just that.  WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW.  On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. There are some people on this planet that are born with a rare gift, and I think my buddy Rory Cordial falls nicely into that category.  Coming from a family chock full of healers, it was only natural that Rory would also take the reins and become a physical therapist. As an artist in his own right, Rory’s rare healing and intuitive touch means he is highly sought-after. He’s spent many years travelling the world, working with the crème de la crème of this planet’s talent- I’m talking Oscar and Grammy winning entertainers and top performing, gold medal winning athletes here. Rory is also the host of The Optimal Performance Guide Podcast, a show that presents his mind-bending conversations with high level humans, while also giving the guidance people need in order to adjust their mindsets and habits to hit optimal health performance.  In this episode, Rory and I are in a healing mood. We talk about his Physical Therapist father, and how he’s mentored Rory to become the pragmatically minded, miracle healer he is today. We also explore some of the aspects of health that everyone should consider adjusting, and the simple techniques we can all apply in our lives to become a little bit happier and way more healthier.    Other Bits From Our Conversation: Growing up in a healthy environment Going beyond the five senses How Rory apts into his physical and mental state Why meditation is better than cramming last minute for an exam Why there is so much power in being subtle- especially when it comes to muscles How gratitude can help you heal What Rory thinks is the key to a healthy life Why we should all map out a clear direction when it comes to our physical health Why you need to commit, commit, commit! #9 Lauren Monroe on Awakening the Heart to Itself

Sometimes we realize at a very young age that there’s something different about us. The difference doesn’t have to lead to insecurity or self-isolation. It could actually lead to something quite amazing. This episode features my friend of 25+ years, Lauren Monroe. You’ve probably heard of Lauren. She’s a singer/songwriter, medium, healer and spiritual teacher, and she happens to be married to the amazing Rick Allen, the drummer for Def Leppard. I knew there was something special about Lauren when I first met her. You know that strange pull you sometimes feel towards a stranger? Like there’s something spiritual and almost cosmic about your encounter? That’s what I felt when I met Lauren, and she’s proven to be one of the most unique people I’ve ever known. Lauren has felt a connection to what she calls Divine Energy since she was a little girl growing up in Queens. Her paranormal experiences and unusual gifts set her on a path of discovery, one that she is still following today. She’s traveled the world learning from spiritual teachers and gurus, and channels everything she learns into her work and her music. Lauren co-founded, along with her husband, the Raven Drum Foundation and the Project Resiliency’s Warrior Resiliency Program which serves, educates and empowers veterans and people in crisis. Lauren and I had a deep conversation about her journey to discover more about her inner gifts and everything that’s come with that. We touch on how she discovered her talent for healing with massage therapy and bodywork and her passion for energy work. She gushes about her passion for music and how excited she is for the release of her new EP and music video on July 10th. You don’t want to miss this conversation with a truly special soul.   Other highlights from this episode: The story of Lauren’s first vision Lauren’s strong faith and what it means to her Why it’s ok to go searching for answers if you’re not getting them from home What indigenous people taught her about self-protection The power of long-distance healing The special frequency of Lauren’s music The power of Grace This week's Fatal Convenience™: Laundry Detergent   Links: Lauren’s Website Lauren on Instagram Lauren Monroe - Big Love (Official Music Video) Project Resiliency Big Love - EP    Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. #8 Erik Cooper on Learning to Adapt by Throwing Yourself Into the Unknown

It’s amazing how one adventure to an unfamiliar place can completely shift your perspective on the world. It can even change the trajectory of your entire life. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. In this episode, I talk with the one and only Erik Cooper, adventurer extraordinaire. And when I say adventurer, I don’t mean someone who likes to go hiking or try new foods. I mean someone who is willing to immerse themselves entirely in an unfamiliar country, with a culture of nomadic people and go for broke competing in the toughest horse race in the world. Erik grew up on a horse farm in a small town in Missouri. He always knew he wanted to explore, and his love of horses was just as strong as his sense of adventure. At 24 he heard about the Mongol Derby, a grueling 10-day horse race through the rough terrain of rural Mongolia. Known as “The Toughest Horse Race in the World”, the Mongol Derby changed Erik in ways he never expected it to. I have such a fun conversation with Erik in this episode.  He told me some crazy stories of his first experience with the Mongol Derby, but we also got into the deep stuff on how it changed him. You get to hear some hilarious anecdotes about wild stubborn horses, getting lost in the mud, and how incredibly tough and amazing the Mongolian nomads are. And we dabble in some other crazy adventures Erik has had and his love of Eagle Hunting, which isn’t what you think. This is definitely an episode you don’t want to miss.   Other nuggets from my conversation with Erik: Erik’s reasons for being drawn to Mongolia What happens when someone breaks their neck in the middle of nowhere How Erik trained for his first Mongol Derby What happened in the first few minutes of the race Why the team aspect is so important during a race like the Mongol Derby Why Erik fell into a depression after getting back from his first Derby The glorious details of Eagle Hunting This episode’s Fatal Convenience™: Dental Floss   Links: Erik Cooper on Instagram An interview with Erik in Forbes The Mongol Derby   Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. #7 Rainbeau Mars on Evolving Your Life

Often, we can get hung up on an untrue self-narrative. In order to shake that off, we need to hold our noses, take the plunge, go deeper, and discover our true worth. This episode welcomes a truly unique, beautiful, complex and badass woman, Rainbeau Mars. She is an author, Hollywood actor, model, yoga instructor, activist and natural health expert. Ever since her birth in a teepee under a double rainbow, Rainbeau Mars has been somewhat destined to bring a little color into our lives.  After a successful career as a model and actress of the stage and screen (you probably recognize her from the controversial 1996 hit, The People vs. Larry Flynt), she decided to pack up her Hollywood life and return to her roots. She wanted to live a life that centered more around her original upbringing- the constant practice of yoga, natural health and activism, with a little bit of acting still thrown in the mix. Today, Rainbeau is the author of the highly successful book the 21 Day Superstar Cleanse, which outlines her signature zero-calorie-restriction vegan cleanse. She also has been featured on The Doctors, GMA, E!, Extra, and Access Hollywood. Her instructional yoga videos have sold millions of copies worldwide and she now stands as the CEO of Rainbeau Mars Lifestyles, an Omni Media Company. In this episode, Rainbeau and I get really freakin’ deep. She opens up about the hard truths she’s had to face when it comes to her biological family and growing up in a post-hippy movement environment. We discuss how she gets to grips with her own unworthiness and insecurity, life in Hollywood, and how sometimes something has to die in order to be reborn.   Other highlights from my conversation with Rainbeau: Why you should write your life story What it’s really like to be the product of the ‘hippy revolution’ Healing yourself and owning your worth A suitcase of cockroaches, a trip to India and a new path towards acceptance Why you need death in order to experience a rebirth Life in Hollywood and why there’s truth in acting Finding self-belief and taking action This episode’s Fatal Convenience™: The Health Care System Links: RainbeauMars.com Rainbeau Mars’ IMDB  Rainbeau Mars on Instagram Rainbeau Mars on Twitter Rainbeau Mars on Youtube The 21 Day SuperStar Cleanse: A Rejuvenating Lifestyle Program to Help You Feel Younger, Healthier and Ready Rock the World! #6 Steve Wright on The Art of Giving, Being Open & Saying YES

Have you ever wondered what could have been if you had just grabbed an opportunity and said ‘yes’ to something? Sometimes doing the right thing is just taking a chance and seizing the opportunities in life. My guest for this week's episode is a kindred spirit, and I'm stoked to call him a friend. You may know Steve Wright as the former NFL player for the Dallas Cowboys circa 1981. But, did you know he's also an intensely passionate innovator and entrepreneur? Steve's entrepreneurial streak first appeared when he noticed that so many of his teammates were taking hard knocks and sustaining avoidable injuries. Early on, he became a proactive advocate for better safety equipment out on the field, which he still campaigns for today. Fast forward to 1994, and Steve and his business partner Mike Davis have just founded the world's first sidelines mist cooling system called Cloudburst Misting Systems. It was so effective that in 1996, they won the Atlanta Summer Olympics cooling contract, which catapulted this innovative technology into the public eye. Since then, he has kept on innovating, creating and being an awesome human being. In this mind-bending episode, we get a deeper view of the humble origins of Steve's career. You'll hear how most of his success stems from taking on a "Forrest Gump" mindset, and why Steve ended up as a survivor on reality TV. You'll also hear how living a minimalist existence has created a life that is certainly worth living.   Other snippets from our conversation: How Steve's NFL career took off Steve talks sports injuries and keeping safe on the field Why Steve went from having Margaritas at a Mexican restaurant to creating a globally acclaimed cooling system. How saying yes to a pair of shoes became a life-changing opportunity years later Why you shouldn't chase the money Steve's experience on Season 22 of 'Survivor'. Rich gets into how acknowledging his obsessive and addictive mindset has helped him fuel new, healthier goals. #4 Logan Gelbrich on Finding the Flow

Some people think they only have two choices in life- Door #1 or Door #2. But what if this linear thinking has held us back our entire lives and is preventing us from growing and evolving? Welcome to The Darin Olien Show. On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. This episode features my buddy Logan Gelbrich. Logan is the founder of DEUCE Gym, which has several locations in California. DEUCE features old school training equipment like boulders, weights, and things right out of a Strongman competition. They’re unlike any gyms I’ve ever been to before and became my workout home after I lost my Malibu home to the fires.  Logan is also the author of the amazing book Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams. And let me tell you guys, this book is a mind opener. It explores the myth we’ve been fed our whole lives about only having two options in life, pursue your dream or take the safe route. It will shatter your thoughts on this kind of thinking, believe me. In this episode, Logan and I get into some deep stuff and some amazing stories of his baseball days playing for the University of San Diego and professionally for the San Diego Padres. We discuss how we both have always taken the path less traveled as far as pursuing our dreams in life, and what that means for our personal growth. This conversation was a good one, guys, and I can’t wait for you to hear it. Other bits from our conversation: Why there is never just two choices Why doing the hard thing leads to personal growth Why pursuing your dreams is never reckless What it means to find the flow Logan’s movie-worthy baseball story My story of almost being in a plane crash Why Logan designed DEUCE the way he did Power vs. Force This episode’s Fatal Convenience™: Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) Links: Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams DUECE Gym Logan on Twitter Logan on Instagram   Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. #3 John C. McGinley On Living In Gratitude

Behind every beloved character from film or television is an actor or actress that pours their heart, soul and personal experience into its creation. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. My guest for this week’s episode is probably one of the most genuine, unique people I know, John C. McGinley. John has been in dozens and dozens of hit films like Platoon, Point Break, Wall Street and The Rock. He’s even shown his Broadway chops in plays like Glengarry Glen Ross. But perhaps his best-known role was as the loveable, but scary, Dr. Perry Cox on the TV show Scrubs. What you may not know is that inspiration for Dr. Cox’s hidden heart of gold, as well as distinctive traits of other characters John has played, comes from his relationship with his son Max. Max was born with Down Syndrome and completely changed John’s life in ways he never imagined. Being a father to Max and daughters Billie and Kate is and will always be his most cherished role. During this epic conversation, John and I discuss his current roles as an ambassador for the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and the Special Olympics. We get into what being involved with these awesome organizations has taught him about life and the human spirit. We also get to hear some hilarious behind the scenes stories of John’s long, impressive career. But don’t worry, this isn’t some stuffy Hollywood guy bragging about his accomplishments. This is a down to earth, ridiculously thoughtful guy gushing about the gratitude he has for the amazing opportunities he’s had in life. Highlights from my amazing conversation with Johnny: John’s hilarious Edger Allen Poe soundcheck How having a special needs son has completely changed his outlook on life How John carries Max with him to every set Why John picks Down Syndrome organizations that don’t just focus on “the Kumbaya” What it means to live in gratitude The Spread the Word to End the Word Initiative and how it came about The adorable story of how Max introduced John to his wife Why John juggles when he’s memorizing lines John’s advice for new actors This episode’s Fatal Convenience™: Plastic Links: Global Down Syndrome Foundation Special Olympics Spread the Word to End the Word Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome John on Twitter   Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. #2 Chris Patton On How We Can Create a More Sustainable World

We’ve entered into a challenging new world, that’s clear to see. Not only for each of us individually but also as a collective. “Sustainability” is the word on everyone’s lips at the moment. But what if we already had the power to turn things around, right now, today? Welcome to the Darin Olien Show. On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. If you don’t think that superheroes exist, you haven’t met Chris Patton. In this episode, I chat with one of my greatest friends, Chris Patton. Don’t worry about trying to Google search this guy, because the likelihood of you finding anything on him is pretty slim. You’re not going to find a website, you won’t come across any interviews, or even a hint of him talking about what he does – but I promise, his story is heroic and totally epic. Chris comes from the Pacific Northwest in Washington State, and up until the mid-’90s, he lived a relatively normal life. He closed sales at a car lot for a time, before switching directions to work in banking. His life was comfortable and secure. It wasn’t until he received an urgent fax from a friend living in West Africa that his world took a skidding turn. It set him on a course towards monumental life shifts involving millions of dollars, death-defying escapes, and ground-breaking scientific discoveries.  This conversation is off the charts in terms of twists and turns. We dive into Chris’s whirlwind life, from gold and diamonds, getting shot and stabbed by militia and becoming a prisoner of war, to phantom movie stardom and rooting out the answers to some of humanity's biggest questions on sustainability. This saga has it all.  For the last decade, Chris has been one of the senior science advisors for the UN on Green Technology. He’s been advising the African Union for over 15 years, as well as sitting on various international economic advisory councils. Chris has done more than most people could do in four lifetimes. He has an enviable dedication and vigor towards saving us as a species. That’s probably why he and I mesh so well.  This is not a conversation to be missed! Other fun stuff in this episode: How have you been adapting to this new world? Who is Chris? The unknown origin story From rumors that he was dead to a blockbuster movie How a sock full of smuggled diamonds led him to the International Tesla Society Why we have the technology to solve the energy crisis, but nothing is being done The frustration of technological stalemate Why “popular” science means nothing in the real world How some of the planet’s greatest creators get taken advantage of Why scientists should turn up the heat The early days of invention This week's Fatal Convenience™- Hand Sanitizer Links: Dark Horse Comics: Website Dark Horse Entertainment: Website Plan B Entertainment: Information Section Eight Productions: Information ‘Blood Diamond’ Movie: Information United Nations: Website African Union: Website   Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. #1 Brandon Jenner On Why Empathy Is Everything

You don’t have to be disadvantaged to have empathy for people who are. Recognizing the good fortune you’ve been born into and using it to help you see the world through other’s eyes is something to be proud of. In this episode, I chat with one of my best friends, Brandon Jenner. You probably know Brandon by his last name. That’s ok, he’s used to that. In fact, the bulk of our conversation is about how Brandon has taken his inherited fame and used it to fuel his empathy for people who haven’t had the same good fortune he has.  Not only has Brandon’s signature empathy fueled his personality and the good he does in the world, but it also is the driving force behind his music. In his debut album, Plan on Feelings, Brandon got extremely vulnerable while writing the song “Anybody?”. We discuss the role vulnerability has played in his life and how you can incorporate it into yours. Brandon is just an all-around great guy. It was fun to get to have a conversation with him about things we don’t usually touch on in our normal weekly hangs. I also got to pick his brain on his down to earth approach to wellness and healthy eating, which I think you’ll enjoy as well. Other good stuff in this episode: How Brandon felt pressured to be an athlete growing up but turned to music instead Why Brandon thinks every single member of his massive family made him who he is today How traveling the world at a young age shaped Brandon’s perspective How Brandon incorporates empathy into everything he does, especially his music Why exercise is so important to him How vulnerability plays a role in his life Why it’s important to find someone in your life that you can open up to The men’s group Brandon and I belong to and the role it plays in both our lives The story of writing the song “Anybody?” from Brandon’s first album This episode’s Fatal Convenience™ - Drinking Tap Water Links: Brandon on Instagram Listen to Brandon’s first Album on Spotify Brandonjennermusic.com   Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN”   The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify.
