Commune with Jeff Krasno

By Commune

Commune is a podcast where we explore the ideas and practices that bring us together and help us live healthy, purpose-filled lives. We believe personal and societal health are two sides of the same coin, and that cultivating personal wellness is the first step toward making the world well. We connect with experts, scientists, and storytellers around food, health, social impact, mindfulness and movement practices, personal growth, and environmental action. In addition to being a podcast, Commune is also an online course platform where thousands of participants take each course together, day-by-day, for free. We then provide social tools that empower participants to form local action groups and implement their new knowledge in their communities.

Healing Our Collective Addictions with Russell Brand

Very few of us are free from some form of addiction — alcohol, sugar, sleeping pills, sex, Instagram, co-dependent relationships, the list goes on. Russell points out that all our addictions stem from a common problem: spiritual disconnection. But when we admit we have a problem, believe in real change, accept help from others, and hand over our will and control to a higher power, we can begin to find freedom from our addictions. Furthermore, can the 12-step recovery model be applied to the addictions of our society? Can we collectively recognize a problem, commit to change, undertake a thorough inventory, recognize patterns, and create a culture of service? Today we examine 12-steps from the personal to the communal. Visit onecommune.com/join to watch Russell's online course on Recovery and try Commune Membership free for 14 days. Solving Society's "Impossible Problems" with Charles Eisenstein

The myth of the separate self underlies our entire civilization, says philosopher and author Charles Eisenstein. This dualistic view of the world pits people against each other and turns nature into something we want to control. But we can choose another story — one of interdependence and connection. By doing so we become able to solve “impossible” problems, from political polarization to global warming. Vaccine Skepticism and Free Speech with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is best known as a distinguished environmental lawyer and advocate for environmental justice. In recent years, he has been an outspoken critic of Big Pharma, specifically as it pertains to vaccines. Many have dubbed him an “anti-vaxxer,” but he claims to be pro-safe vaccines and contends that vaccines do not undergo sufficient testing. Jeff invited Robert on the podcast to provide a platform for Robert to raise legitimate concerns about vaccination, as the lack of thoughtful discussion on this issue has, in some cases, radicalized the movement. While Jeff may not agree with some of the assertions in this episode, he ultimately decided that the value of sharing another’s opinion in a considered and non-social media context was more valuable than silencing those views. This is Part 1 of a two-part series on recovery with Russell Brand. Russell points out that all our addictions stem from a common problem: spiritual disconnection. But when we admit we have a problem, believe in real change, accept help from others, and hand over our will and control to a higher power, we can begin to find freedom from our addictions. Advice For Advocates

Today’s show is about what it means to be an advocate: why and how and with what intention we should speak up for the causes we care about. We’ve pulled excerpts from three Commune courses: • Finian Makepeace talks about the importance of the “second person” who makes an idea available to new, broader audiences. • Marianne Williamson shares with us the difference between “speaking up” and “tearing down.” • Suzanne Sterling offers advice for how to discover the authentic voice that lives within you. We hope this episode gives you some tools and motivation to speak up with compassion—for yourself and for others. As Marianne Williamson says, “There's no religious or spiritual tradition anywhere that gives anyone a pass on addressing the suffering of other sentient beings.” All of these courses are represented in the Commune Summit! Your Health is in Your Hands with Kelly Noonan Gores

Modern allopathic medicine is brilliant at treating acute trauma, but it’s a big problem when we try to treat chronic health issues with the same approach. Today on the show Jeff speaks to Kelly Noonan Gores, writer, producer and director of the documentary Heal. She explains how our medical system throws drugs at symptoms instead of understanding and treating the root cause of the disease. This is no small matter, as over half the American population is now afflicted by chronic issues such as diabetes, arthritis, asthma, and cardiovascular disease. Yet Kelly’s message is one of empowerment: We are not destined by our DNA. We have agency over our own well-being. Learn more about Commune courses and events at onecommune.com.

Your Hormones Are a Superpower with Dr. Jolene Brighten

Dr. Jolene Brighten is a women's health naturopathic medical doctor and author of Beyond the Pill. She believes every woman (and the men in her life) should get to know her hormones, because only by understanding how her body works can a woman make informed, healthy choices about interventions such as birth control. Hand-in-hand with education, Dr. Brighten also believes we need to flip the script in women's medicine – where everything is diagnosed is a “dysfunction” – and instead embrace that the cyclical nature of female hormones is actually a superpower. Question Your Thoughts with Byron Katie

Byron Katie became severely depressed while in her thirties. Over a ten-year period, her depression deepened, and for the last two years, Katie was seldom able to leave her bedroom. Then one morning, in the depths of despair, she experienced a life-changing realization. Katie saw that when she believed her thoughts, she suffered; when she didn’t believe her thoughts, she didn’t suffer. What had been causing her depression was not the world around her, but what she believed about the world around her. Birth Stories: Rewriting the Narrative

"Think for a moment about the stories you tell yourself about childbirth… None of us remember our own births, and many of us don’t even know our mother’s (or father’s) story of how we were born. And the births we hear about are usually the dramatic or traumatic, because a smooth, easy birth doesn’t make much of a story.      What’s more, the way babies are born in movies and on TV certainly doesn’t help paint a picture of diversity and nuance in labor… you don’t see many women in a birth tub or crawling around on all fours on Grey’s Anatomy. In fact the power of the imagery most of us have – a woman on her back, screaming bloody murder – is more than pernicious… it is a recipe for stalled labor.    In today’s episode, guest host Schuyler Grant attempts to change that imagery, starting with the story of her birth day.    If you are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant, check out Schuyler's new Commune course, Empowered Birth! onecommune.com/birth" Learn more about Commune courses and events at onecommune.com.
